With winter weather quickly approaching, it is time to review some safety concerns

for children coming to and going from school. Crossing guards play an important

role in the safety of the children and have been placed as necessary in school vicinities. Some

basic crossing guard rules are:

Children are to cross at the crossing guard area only.

The crossing guard must direct children as to when it is safe to cross.

Please do not call children across streets away from the crossing guard.

Be aware and heed directions of the crossing guard as you drop children at and around the

school buildings.

Be courteous to the crossing guard--do not move your vehicle into an intersection until the

crossing guard has completely vacated the street and is safely on the sidewalk.

As the weather gets colder, we all wish to get the children indoors as quickly as possible. With

proper drop-off and pick-up procedures and times in place, the children will be able to safely get

to and from school. The crossing guards will also be safe as they carry out their task of getting the

children safely across our streets.

REMINDER: Students should not be at school before 7:55 a.m. unless the student is in latchkey, cho-

rus, music, or other arrangements have been approved.

Students should not cut through the parking lots on Washington Street or Buena Vista Street. Using

the provided sidewalks to access the cafeteria or entries will help ensure student safety. We have

had some close-calls in the parking lots as students have passed through blind spots between

cars. There is heavy traffic in both lots in the morning as district employees arrive.

Please Be Aware: When people pass a school bus that has its stop sign and stop arm out, they are

violating the Stop Arm Violation law of the State of Illinois.

If convicted, the penalty is an automatic 3-month suspension of the violator’s driver license along

with a fine. This is not a City of Pekin or Pekin Public Schools #108 rule; this is Illinois law. Please be

careful and cautious near stopped buses; we do not want anyone to lose driving privileges OR for

any child to be in danger when entering or exiting a school bus.

The most valued gift that you can give to your children is to show your genuine interest and sup-port in their work and life at school. It’s December and that means DISCO BOWLING in the tile gym!!

Each day your student has PE, we will be bowling. We like to decorate the gym with lights to make it an experi-

ence to remember. If you have disco balls or laser lights you are willing to share, please put your name on

them and send them to school with your student. We cannot allow lava lamps or strobe lights. Also, each

time your student gets a strike, his or her name will be put on a Strike Club board according to his or her grade.

Don’t forget to ask your student about it.!

As the weather is getting colder and students begin to wear boots to school, please remember they still need ten-

nis shoes for PE. Students are encouraged to leave an extra pair in their locker so they are always prepared on

PE days!

Happy Holidays!

Mrs. Gutierrez

Just a quick note from the Learning Center

Genre study is going great. Please encourage the kids to keep reading the different types of genres. They need to have a total of 6 done by March 3rd. A total of 9 for the year.

Young Authors is just around the corner. If you child would like to participate please have them brainstorming what that would like to write about.

More information will come out soon.
