In February, PEFC released a new video to promote the value and benefits of responsibly-sourced forest products entitled Forests Matter. This new communications tool has been developed to provide a snapshot of the PEFC programme; what it involves, why it matters and the role that businesses can play in helping to secure a future for the world’s forests. With some 1.6 billion people relying on forests for their livelihoods and two out of three species for their habitats, it is vital that forests are managed well so that they can continue to provide benefits for future generations. The video explains PEFC’s role in promoting sustainable forest management using a local stakeholder approach and independent third-party certification. It demonstrates how PEFC connects forests to the marketplace, helping companies provide assurances of responsibly-sourced forest products to their customers. Stocking and selling PEFC-certified products enables companies to meet customer expectations while helping to secure future supplies of responsibly-sourced forest products such as paper, packaging and timber. With some 1.6 billion people relying on forests for their livelihoods and two out of three species for their habitats, it is

vital that forests are managed well so that they can continue to provide benefits for future generations.

This year’s Annual Stakeholder Day will take place in London on Tuesday 5th July. The conference theme will be Market Drivers for Certified Products with speakers highlighting the role market-based initiatives are playing

in driving demand for certified products around the globe. This is the ideal event for brand owners and retailers to come along and find out what’s driving demand for certified products such as PEFC’s.

The keynote speaker will be Ignacio Gavilan, Director of Sustainability for the influential global industry group, the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF). This organisation brings together more than 400 retailers, manufacturers and service providers, including major brands such as Coca Cola, Johnson & Johnson, Kellogg’s, L’Oreal, Nestle, P&G, Tesco and Asda-WalMart. Ignacio will speak on Zero Net Deforestation by 2020 and the importance of sourcing pulp, paper and packaging responsibly.

PEFC reviews its standards every five years to ensure that they incorporate latest knowledge, best practice, and evolving stakeholder expectations. This process is vital as these documents define not only the environmental, social and economic requirements for sustainable forest management, but also how implementation in the forest is certified. The standards revision process commenced In February and will end December 2017. During this period, all PEFC’s standards, including Chain of Custody, will be reviewed and we urge stakeholders to get involved in the revision process.

There are several different ways for interested stakeholders to participate, working groups and the expert forum, participation in a stakeholder conference or by responding to the global public consultation. A Standards Revision newsletter containing regular updates on the revision process will be published to keep stakeholders up to speed with developments.

PEFC UK has recently published a new brochure, Promoting Sustainable Forest Management around the World: PEFC & FSC. This publication aims to answer some of the most frequently, asked questions about the differences and similarities between PEFC’s sustainable forest management certification system, and the Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) programme.

Worldwide, there are two internationally recognised certification systems, PEFC and FSC, and this brochure explains the origins of both certification systems. It also aims to serve as a useful resource tool for certified companies who may have questions about how the two schemes differ in their requirements and approach.

The A5, 8pp brochure can be downloaded from the website: www.pefc.co.uk/publications and hard copies can be requested by e-mailing [email protected]
