The Report ound that the level o certication in the UK timber industry has increased signicantly between 2005 and 2008. The certied proportion o the 8.18m tonnes o sotwood roundwood harvested in the UK in 2008 increased to 83.9% rom a level o 80.5% in 2005. The Report also ound that the certied proportion in the UK o the 14.40m m3 o timber and panel products produced and imported in 2008 grew to 83.6%, rom a level o 66.7% in 2005. The Report ound that the level o certi cation in the UK timber industryhas increased signi cantly between 2005and 2008. The certi ed proportion o the8.18m tonnes o so twood roundwoodharvested in the UK in 2008 increased to83.9% rom a level o 80.5% in 2005.

The Report also ound that the certi edproportion in the UK o the 14.40m m3 o timber and panel products produced andimported in 2008 grew to 83.6%, rom alevel o 66.7% in 2005.

and promotion o the Furniture IndustrySustainability Programme (FISP) andchaired the Furniture Industry EnvironmentCommittee.

Director In October last year, Julia Gri fn was appointed to the Board o PEFC UK.Julia is Social Responsibility Coordinatorand Advisor or Timber at B&Q. Juliaprovides expertise to the business and theSocial Responsibility team on timber policydevelopment and B&Q’s buying standardrequirements, timber sourcing and annualdata reporting. Her role also involves ensuringthat B&Q’s supply base understands theenvironmental and social impacts associatedwith their products and manu acturing,whilst en orcing B&Q’s Chain o CustodyCerti cation is monitored and maintained.

Sheam Satkuru-Granzella was elected tothe main Board o PEFC International at thegeneral Assembly in Paris held in November.Sheam, currently Director o the MalaysianTimber Council, is a specialist in internationaltrade with strong experience in legal andpolicy analysis relating to the timber and

orest industries, communications and publicrelations. She is an experienced international

trade negotiator, with responsibility or theco-ordination and implementation o theMalaysian Timber Council’s policy/PR/ Communications strategies and activitiesacross Europe.

With most o the UK’s leading paper merchantsnow able to o er a range o PEFC-certi edpapers to their customers and more than

500 printers having achieved PEFC chain o custody certi cation, more and more publishersand brand owners are now choosing to usethe PEFC logo on their consumer- acingpublications to demonstrate responsible papersourcing. These companies include Argos,Boden, British Airways, First Choice, Matalan,

The East Anglia-based company, which wasestablished in August ‘09, provides a widerange o timber and joinery products includingbeams, posts, cladding and fooring as wellas sawn timber. The company’s passion orhardwood, quality and customer care has seenthe business go rom strength to strength in avery short time. It aims to provide a personaland knowledgeable solution to all its customer’stimber requirements, no matter how large orsmall.

PEFC Director Ross Bradshaw presentedthe PEFC programme at a seminar sessionentitled Responsible paper Procurement; Good

or Business, Great or the Environment. Theseminar covered actors driving demand orresponsibly sourced paper, responsible paperchoices (recycled and certi ed virgin bre) andglobal sustainable orest management.

PEFC also co-hosted a champagne receptionwith chain o custody certi ed paper merchant– PaperCo which was very well attended. Thereception also doubled as an awards ceremony

or PaperCo’s Brie Encounters competition orsecond year graphic design students, workingclosely with UK universities and art colleges.

Commenting on the new livery Gail Marriottsaid, “AC Timber takes its commitment toresponsible timber sourcing very seriously andhas dual PEFC and Forest Stewardship Council(FSC) chain o custody certi cation to provideassurances to our customers. We are proud todemonstrate our support or responsible orestmanagement by including the PEFC logo on ourcorporate livery.”

Marriott said that the company’s accreditationto the PEFC chain o custody was valuableto both the business and its customers, anddemonstrates its commitment to sustainabletimber sourcing. “We currently hold stocks o PEFC beech but with our ast expansion ourstock o PEFC species will increase in the verynear uture,” she stated.

Welcoming AC Timber’s decision, PEFC UKChairman, Peter Latham said, “We are delightedthat AC Timber Solutions has chosen thishighly visible means o demonstrating theirparticipation in the PEFC programme. With over900 companies now having a licence to use thePEFC logo, it is beginning to appear on a widerange o timber products and more and moreconsumer- acing print publications. However,this is the rst time a company has incorporatedit on its vehicle livery. This presents an excellentopportunity to increase public awareness o thePEFC brand”.

with the British Standards Institute (BSI) to

develop a new environmental standard or

direct marketing - PAS 2020 which was

launched in 2009. It establishes a set o

environmental objectives, per ormance

levels and indicators or environmental

impacts o a direct marketing campaign. TheSustainable Mail standard has been closely

aligned to PAS 2020.

Meeting the new standard will enable

companies using direct mail in their marketing

mix to demonstrate a commitment to

recycling, sustainability and waste reduction

as well as helping to improve their overall

corporate environmental per ormance.
