IntroductIon

The PEFC logo and labels are globally trusted

marks, assisting businesses, consumers, orest

owners and managers, and other stakeholders in

identiying and promoting merchandise and goods

rom orests that are managed sustainably.

The demand or PEFC certication has constantly

increased over the past years, with the potential that

orests can play in tackling societal challenges suchas climate change gaining relevance with the public

at large. Today, PEFC is the worlds largest certica-

tion organization with over 220 million hectares o

certied orests an area equivalent to the size o

the whole o Mexico, or France, Germany, Italy and

the UK combined.

PUrPOSE OF ThIS TOOLKIT

You are only permitted to use the logo and label i you have

obtained a logo license. This document and PEFCs Logo

Usage Rules - Requirements (PEFC ST 2001:2008) explain

how to remain in accordance with the requirements.

It is o undamental importance or PEFC to protect its

trademark and ensure that the logo and label are used

accurately and veriably, and that any claims associated

with it are relevant and non-misleading. The correct use

o the logo on products and associated documentation

and in any communication is essential in protecting

PEFCs credibility.

The PEFC Logo Use Toolkit is designed to assist logo

users in applying the logo and labels consistently in

terms o design and layout, and in line with PEFCs

technical requirements and branding.

Using the logo and label enables companies and orest

owners to:

identiy to which Logo User Group (Chapter 1) you be-

Chapters 3 & 4. The Chapter on Design Specications

aims at ensuring that the PEFC logo and label are used

correctly and consistently, and to avoid commonly encoun-

A.1. Logo user groups

The PEFC logo license is available or our

dierent logo user groups: Chain o Custody

(CoC) certied companies; sustainable orest

management (SFM) certied orest owners/

managers; non-certied entities; and authorised

licensing agents. In addition, simplied licensing

requirements exist or entities using the logo on

a one-time basis or illustrative or educationalpurposes (o-product only).

COC CErTIFIEd COmPAnIES

These are entities along the value chain o orest-based

products that have obtained PEFC Chain o Custody

certication. Examples include: manuacturers; processing

industries; procurement organizations; traders; distributors;

and retailers. (PEFC Logo User Group C)

SFm CErTIFIEd FOrEST OwnErS/mAnAGErS

These are entities owning/managing orests that have

obtained PEFC-recognised certication or sustainable

orest management. Examples include holders o regional

or group certicates; other entities participating in regional

or group certication (e.g. contractors); and individual

orest owners. (PEFC Logo User Group B)

nOn-CErTIFIEd EnTITIES

These are entities selling certied products without

the requirement to obtain PE FC certication (e.g.retailers or DIY shops as sellers o certied products,

uniquely identiable, and labelled through suppliers) and

others that strive to promote and educate about PEFC

certication (e.g. government or banks as nal consumers

o certied products; and organizations and associations

AUThOrISEd LICEnSInG AGEnTS

These are entities authorised to issue PEFC logo licenses

on behal o the PEFC Council. Examples include national

PEFC members and PEFC promotion initiatives. (PEFC

OnE-TImE USErS

Simplied licensing requirements are available or entitiesusing the logo on a one-time basis or illustrative or

educational purposes (o-product only). Examples include

media; newspapers; magazines; reports; and websites.

Obligatory approval:

All entities, both certicate holders and non-certicate

holders, are required to obtain a Logo Usage License rom

PEFC Council or an authorized licensing agent (e.g. national

PEFC members or PEFC promotion initiatives) beore

using the PEFC logo and label.

A.2. Logo use optIons

Two logo use options exist: The use o the logo

physically on a certied product and on stationary,

brochures or other documentation linked to the

product (on-product); and the use o the logo not

linked to a product, or instance or promotional or

educational purposes (o-product).

On-PrOdUCT USE

CErTIFIEd FOrEST OwnErS/mAnAGErS)

Using the PEFC logo on a product is an excellent

means or PEFC-certied entities to demonstrate their

commitment to responsible orest management and to

promote their environmental and social credentials. It

indicates to businesses along the value chain and to

consumers that the material used in the product is linkedto PEFC-certied orests, recycled and/or controlled

sources, and provides consumers with responsible options

when purchasing wood-based products.

On-product use includes the use on:

tangibleproductsthemselves(unpackagedproducts),

products in individual packaging, containers,

wrapping, etc.; or on large boxes, crates, etc. used or

transportation o products; and on

documentationassociatedorreferringtoaparticular

PEFC-certied product (e.g. invoices, packaging lists,

advertisements, brochures, etc.)

Note: Any use o the PEFC logo and label that reers to - or

can be perceived as reerring to - a specifc PEFC-certifed

product and/or the origin o the raw material used in its

production is considered on-product use.

OFF-PrOdUCT USE

(AvAILAbLE FOr ALL LOGO USEr GrOUPS)

The PEFC logo is highly credible and allows companies,

organizations, governments, associations and others

to communicate and promote their support or PEFC-

certied sustainable orest management. O-product use

does not reer to specic products and the origin o raw

material rom PEFC-certied orests.

O-product use includes the use o the PEFC logo and

labels to communicate PEFC certication on/in:

rEqUIrEd ELEmEnTS

The PEFC logo consists o two trees surrounded by a

circle and the initials PEFC.

The PEFC logo is a registered trademark and always

needs to be accompanied by the TM symbol.

The PEFC logo licence number uniquely identies the

logo licence holder.

Note: The PEFC logo licence number is NOT identicalwith the Sustainable Forest Management or Chain o

Custody certicate number.

OPTIOnAL ELEmEnTS

Indicates the percentage o PEFC certied raw

material in the product (at least 70%) and is available

or the PEFC certied label only.

The label name and label claim communicate the

meaning o the logo.

PEFC website.

PEFC Trademark

The PEFC logo and the initials PEFC are the exclusive

property o the PEFC Council and are internationally

registered trademarks.

Abuse

As the trademarks are a visual cue that consumers are

increasingly looking or, it is vital to correct misuse o the

PEFCtrademarks,evenifitisunintentional.Weencourage

anyone to report improper uses to allow us to investigate the

matter properly.

Recycling symbol (Mobius loop)

The recycling symbol, including the

percentage o recycled material contained

in the product, is an additional, required

element o the PEFC Certied and

Recycled label. The Mobius loop is used

in accordance with ISO 14021:1999

Third-party involvement in the use o the label

Licensees are ully responsible or compliance with the Logo

Usage Contract. This also applies i a third-party is involved

in the use o the logo (eg. by designers, printers, product

advertisements in external catalogues). In such cases, a

written agreement between the licensee and the 3rd party to

ensure compliance with the logo usage rules is recommended.
