The Facts about Substance Abuse
• An estimated 9.1% of employees have a substance abuse problem.
• 77% of individuals with substance use disorders are employed.

Why it Matters to YouSAFETY• People who abuse alcohol or drugs are three and a half times more likely to
be involved in a workplace accident.• 20% of workers report being injured or put in danger on the job because of a
coworker’s drinking.
ABSENTEEISM • Workers with a substance abuse disorder miss 45% more days per year.
HEALTH • Alcohol and substance abuse cause serious medical problems including
cardiovascular, neurological impairments, liver disease, stroke and cancer.
PRODUCTIVITY• 20% of workers report having to work harder, redo work, or cover for a
coworker because of a fellow employee’s drinking.

What is the Peer Volunteer Program?
A confidential way for employees to speak to trusted co-workers about entering into treatment for drug or alcohol abuse
Available to all PG&E employees and their dependents
Collaborative effort between PG&E, IBEW Local 1245, and ESC Local 20

Who are the Peer Volunteers?
● Peers are PG&E employees who are either in long-term recovery or have a loved one who is.
● They volunteer to assist employees and their family members into recovery.
● They have been trained by the Employee Assistance Program and have access to mental health professionals if needed.

• Peer Volunteers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
• They provide confidential assistance to PG&E employees and their family members.
