OVERVIEW

THE STORY

THE CONCEPT

THE IMPLEMENTATION

THE WORLD IS RUNNING OUT OF CHOCOLATE.

THE STORY

THE WORLD IS RUNNING OUT OF CHOCOLATE.

THE STORY

THE CONCEPT

THE IMPLEMENTATION

COCOA, THE MAIN INGREDIENT IN CHOCOLATE, IS BEING CONSUMED FASTER THAN IT CAN BE GROWN.

THE WORLD MAY BE RUNNING OUT OF CHOCOLATE.

OUR VISUALIZATION HELPS THE VIEWER UNDERSTAND WHY.

THE STORY

THE CONCEPT

THE IMPLEMENTATION

IT PUTS THE VIEWER INTO THE STORY.

A MORE PERSONAL APPROACH BY CALCULATING THE OUTCOMES BASED ON HIS OWN CHOCOLATE CONSUMPTION.

OUR CONCEPT

THE STORY

THE CONCEPT

THE IMPLEMENTATION

Statistics and predictions based on user’s individual input. Puts the numbers into the perspective “What this means for me?”

What would happen if everyone ate the same amount of chocolate as you do? You can change the amount of chocolate consumed per week, and see how this influences the projections.

DATA SOURCES

THE STORY

THE CONCEPT

THE IMPLEMENTATION

Multiple openly available data sources about world’s production, supply and consumption of cocoa.

Also some predictions what will happen in the future.

DATA SOURCES

THE STORY

THE CONCEPT

THE IMPLEMENTATION

Multiple openly available data sources about world’s production, supply and consumption of cocoa.

Also some predictions what will happen in the future.

If we have the info of how much cocoa is currently being consumed worldwide, we can combine this with current production numbers to estimate price increases, or even when we might run out of cocoa altogether.

IMPLEMENTATION

THE STORY

THE CONCEPT

THE IMPLEMENTATION

The dynamic visualisation part will be built with the D3.js JavaScript library and embedded to a web page.

CHALLENGES

THE STORY

THE CONCEPT

THE IMPLEMENTATION

Projections Estimating what might happen on the market is difficult

• increasing demand in Asia, but difficult to predict exact numbers

• new solutions to tackle the issue being developed (genetically modified crops, …)

• big share of cocoa production depended on Ebola or similar outbreaks

We just have to assume some things.
