December Board Committee Meetings Schedule October New Owners 41 It is a pleasure to work with such a great group of Directors. It takes a lot of commitment and cooperation to keep our co-op strong. In October we had our annual Board retreat. This may sound like the Co-op sent its Board to the beach for a few days of relaxation and a little conversation, but, in reality, it means we get together in a large meeting space and discuss strategic planning for a full work day and then some. Even though our retreats take a lot of mental energy, I always leave feeling revitalized about the team I am working with and the mission we are working for. This year we had the chance to meet over two days. On our first day we spent a few hours with our administrative leadership team. It was a pleasure to take some time to get to know our administrative managers better and discuss the strengths and weaknesses we can all identify. We spent our second day working to identify long-term challenges using a PESTLE model (political, economic, social, technology, legal and environment). Using this approach, we discovered several key points to focus on to help maintain the Co-op's long-term success. As a result, we will be reevaluating and reimagining the Board's Owner Relations Committee (ORC). Financially speaking, we had a good year in 2017 and 2018 is looking favorable as well. Despite our successes, a stable economy is not something we can rely on forever. There is a need to continue building capital in order to maintain the sturdy foundation we have and to make improvements whenever possible. Another noteworthy focus is the need to continue identifying and supporting local vendors. The local food system is evolving, and we must evolve with it. As some farmers retire without a succession plan, we are actively building strong relationships with small farms and working with new producers to maintain the local food supply. As the chair for the Board Recruitment and Elections Committee (BREC), I can say that we've been working hard to improve our recruitment process. Our goal is to have more than enough candidates for each election cycle. However, sometimes we can't find enough volunteers to run for election, or people need to leave their Director position early. In October we had two open Director seats. At the October 30th Board meeting we considered and discussed three candidates who came forward after the 2018 election. All candidates had to go through the same process as anyone running in a general election by the Owners. We require an application, interview with the BREC, and a background check. As a result, I am happy to announce that Rob May and Tyra Jannson were chosen to be our new directors serving terms until in 2021. If you or anyone you know are considering joining First Alternative's Board, please get in touch with me at [email protected] with any questions. We begin taking applications for the 2019 Board of Directors election February 1st. On a similar note, we are working hard to incorporate electronic voting for our 2019 election. We believe that it will improve our voter turnout and decrease our election costs by saving money on printing and mailing fewer ballots. We have talked with several co-ops using electronic voting and everyone has positive things to say. We will have more on this topic as we get closer to the 2019 Board election. In closing I'd like to wish everyone a joyous change of season! Remember to take care of yourselves and each other.
