    THE BOARDWALK CONSTRUCTIONTHE BOARDWALK CONSTRUCTION

The bricks andmortar story . . .Contractors put scale

    and size ofconstruction into

    perspective

WITH construction at the Board-walknowwellunderway, contrac-tors have released some facts andfigures that put the scale and sizeof the project into perspective.

In the initial excavation phase, more than 115 000 m of earth androck were removed, enough to fillalmost 60 Olympic swimmingpools. Then 1 424 soil nails and 27ground anchors were used to securethe excavation sidewalls, whilenearly 10 000 m of waterproofing enough to cover a rugby field werelaid to ensure the new structuresstay dry.

More than 32 000 m of concrete enough to fill 60 standard domesticswimming pools together withmore than 5 200 tons of reinforce-ment and 158 tons of structural steelwill be used in the basic structures, with 1 852 columns providing sup-port.

In addition more than 37 000 m ofbrickwork, enough to cover overthree rugby fields, will be used to en-close the structures, and most of thatwill be hidden behind some 80 000 mof internal and external plaster, which could provide a rather hardsurface for a further eight rugbyfields.

Once the structures are complete, they will be covered by 4 600 m of

An aerial shot of the construction at the Boardwalk. Photo: AVENGE GRINAKERLTA

roof covering, enough to enclose al-most six tennis courts, while the pub-lic areas in the different storeys ofthe new buildings will require morethan 35 000 m of ceilings enough tocover almost 44 tennis courts.

When all of that is complete, thewalls in the public areas will be cov-ered by 10 000 m of wallpaper and3 000 m of shiplap timber cladding, while the floors will be covered by15 000 m of tiling, and 14 500 m of

plush carpeting, enough to cover 14rugby fields.

More than 10 000 new and replace-ment lights will be fitted to the newbuildings, and seven lifts and eightescalators will provide quick and

easy access.Although some areas will be

opened to the public over the nextfew months, the target date for thecompletion of the project is Decem-ber 2012.

Pirates and Cosmos PSLmatch inMandela Bay Stadium

    NCEBA DLADLA

GOOD news for Eastern Cape foot-ball lovers is that they can look for-ward to two elite Professional Soc-cer League (PSL) matches in thenext week at the Nelson MandelaBay Stadium.

Orlando Pirates will take on JomoCosmos on Sunday (October 30), whileAmakhosi and Maritzburg Unitedwill play against each other on No-vember 1.

These are the first of six PSLmatches lined up for Nelson MandelaBay stadium to ensure that local foot-ball lovers are entertained up to April2012, said Access Management Mar-keting Manager Buli Ngomane.

Speaking to PE Express Indaba lastFriday, Ngomane, better known asBuli G, said this was part of a biggerplan to have a PSL team coming tohave its base here in Mandela Bay.

Together with the Nelson MandelaMetropolitan Municipality we (thestadium management) have notedthat there are teams in the PSL whoare struggling to find grounds fortheirhomematches. We then thought, opening up for these teams would bea good business decision and cost-ef-fective in the maintenance of the sta-dium so, we invited Jomo Cosmos andMaritzburg United to come here andtest the grounds, said Ngomane.

With these top PSL matchesplayed in the Nelson Mandela Bay sta-dium we want to dispel the myth thatwe are only rugby crazy people. We

love our soccer and this stadium isavailable to host any event that thepeople want, said Ngomane.

Kick-off for Sundays match is at 3pm and the tickets are available at R40each at Computicket and selected out-lets in around Nelson Mandela Bay.

Win! Win! Win! A total of 35 ticketsfor each of the two soccer matches areup for grabs to PE Express readers. Church celebratesKingJamesBibles 400 years

    PE EXPRESS CORRESPONDENT

THEKingJamesversionof theBible, arguably the most read book of alltime, celebrates its 400th year of ex-istence this year, and the occasionwas commemorated by the New

Appostolic Church community ofPort Elizabeth recently.

Algoa Park, a congregation in theArcadia Bishop area, was the host forcommemorating the translation ofthe Bible from Hebrew to English in1611.

The event was opened with aprayer and scripture reading, whichincluded a blind sister reading froma Braille Bible, and there were eightstalls manned by the Sunday School,Youth, Bible Society, Cum Books,NAC shop, Music, Zivikele and theBlind Society.

All these standsdepictedaspects ofthe Bible that corresponded withtheir purpose and each had its own

unique appeal to the audience. Zi-vikele, an NGO who sees it as theircore social responsibility to supportthe fight against gender-based vio-lence, clearly embraced the two com-mandments from the Bible, Thoushalt not kill and Love thy neigh-bour.

The expo was well attended and en-tertainment in the form of choralrenditions, short plays, story-tellingand activities for the little ones wasintermittently presented. Food stallsprovided much needed inner suste-nance; thus body and soul were bothnourished.

This could be the start of an annu-al event to celebrate and promote thereading and effective utilisation ofthe Bible. It can only serve to en-hance and increase Christianity aswell as the understanding of the in-tent of that which is contained with-in this world-renowned book, saidApostle Harold Swartbooi of the NewApostolic Church.

    PE EXPRESS REPORTERS

LITTLE Hannah Marshall fromPort Elizabeth, who suffers fromsevere hearing loss and involun-tary eye movements, will undergoa cochlear implant operation be-fore the end of the year.

PE Express reported last month onhow Hannahs parents Cathrin andMike are leaving no stone unturnedto give her the ability to hear and see.

Hannah has recently been testedand she will need cochlear implants. As they dont want to wait, she willbe receiving her first one before theend of the year, said Hannahs mom,Cathrin.

This came to us as a shock, but weknow that if we wait, she will lose ayears development. Medical aid hasbeen wonderful and they have cometo the party regarding some funds,

but they havent agreed to all thefunds and with the implants being soexpensive we will have to do somemore fundraising, said Cathrin.

In order to do this they are holdinga bingo evening tomorrow and a fam-ily fun walk on November 12.

The Help Hannah Hear BingoEvening will be held at 7pm at theOld Grey Sports Club at 2 LennoxStreet, Glendinningvale. Entrance isa R20 donation to Help Hannah Hear, while it will cost R5 per card pergame (9 games in total). For ticketssend an e-mail to [email protected].

The Family Fun Falk will be heldfrom 9am from the Pollok Beachparking area along the new walkwaytot the lighthouse and back. A picnicwill then be held and participantscan bring their own picnic basket.

The cost is R20 per adult and R10per child.

Tickets for both events must be

    bought before the events from Cath-rine at0 079 676 6487 or e-mail [email protected].

    Visit Hannahs website atwww.helphannahhear.co.za.

Hannahs storyHannah was born on November 24,

2010 and appeared to be a perfect lit-tle girl. But after being at home fora month her parents noticed thatsomething was wrong.

We noticed her eyes were mov-ing differently from those of herthree little friends that were bornwithin weeks of each other, and shewasnt focusing on anything in par-ticular.

At just three months Hannah wasdiagnosed with Pendular Nystag-mus, which is involuntary move-ment of the eyes.

With this condition comes someform of vision loss. At present we arenot sure as to how much she can see,

but we can safely say that Hannahcan see us.

It is also irreversible and she willhave to learn how to control themovement as she gets older.

Depending on the severity of hervision loss she might not be able todrive a car. This obviously will affecther independence when she gets old-er, Cathrin explained.

At six months the couple realisedthat something was amiss with Han-nahs hearing, and they took her toan ear, nose and throat specialist, thinking perhaps that it was justfluid blocking her ears.

An Auditory Brainstem Responsewas done to test her hearing and itwas found that she had severe hear-ing loss in both her ears.

This has been the hardest ninemonths of our lives, but we can saythat we are doing everything in ourpower to give our little angel the bestthat we can.

    Ndine weer in BaaiJACOBUS MYBURGH

Toe ek my heel eerste CD konvashou, was dit vir my half nvreemde gevoel, omdat dit myproduk is.

Musiek is soosparfuum.

Eksienuitnadiemense, ve-ral omdat hulle so vriendelik is!

Eindeloos is tans in verskeiemusiekwinkels beskikbaar.

Ndine tree op 29 Oktober om8NM. by die Boardwalk op.Kaartjies is beskikbaar teen R80per persoon by 0 041 365 0217.

    LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

    Motoristapplaudspost office

I RECENTLY read your article regarding thefrustration of motorists when it comes to reli-censing of motor vehicles, Car registrationa headache for locals (PE Express, Sept. 28).

In response to the recent article concerningthe frustration of motorists in relicensing ofmotor vehicles, I had an extremely pleasantexperience.

I relocated to Port Elizabeth from CapeTown and today (October 3) was a convenientday forme to convertmyCape licencenumberto that of the Eastern Cape.

I went to the Greenacres Post Office thismorning for the renewal, and they completelyrenewed my vehicle licence and gave me anEC number. This was a quick process, and theservice was excellent and very friendly!

I must admit that Greenacres Post Office isthe best Post Office Ive seen in a long time.It is nowonder theyhavealready receivedoneor more service awards.

From November onwards, they are no long-er allowed to change existing registrationnumbers, only renew licences. One must ad-mit their service is excellent.

Dealing with anxiety in childrenIS your child resisting school oractivities or acting panicked orangry if forced to attend? Is he cry-ing more, feeling sick, and notwanting to leave you? Is he obsess-ing over things such as germs, routines, or school work? Does hegenerally worry over manythings? Is there family history ofanxiety? If you answered yes totwo or more, your child may bestruggling with one of the manytypes of Child Anxiety and needshelp to overcome it.

In order to be considered a childmental health disorder; the symp-toms must be present for 6 months orlonger and be affecting several areasof the childs life. It is not uncommonto be diagnosed with both depression

and an anxiety disorder.* Obsessive-compulsive disorder:

This disorder is characterized by re-current, unwanted thoughts (obses-sions) and repetitive behavioursused by the child to relieve the anx-ious thoughts (compulsions). Com-pulsions can be behaviours like handwashing, organizing, checking, ormental acts like ritualized praying, counting and repeating words silent-ly.

    * School Phobia: According to sev-eral research studies undertaken, many children struggle with anxie-ties related to school. Commonschool-based anxieties are separa-tion anxiety, panic/anxiety attacks, social anxiety, perfectionism, andother general school-based fears.

    * Separation anxiety:Fears of be-

ing separated from a safe and secureadult can cause major problems likeschool refusal, thwarting eventswith friends, and resisting extracur-ricular activities.

Separation anxiety is character-ized by extreme and unnecessaryanxiety when faced with being sepa-rated from those to whom your childis attached. Physical symptoms in-clude sleep issues, complaints aboutphysical problems like headaches, stomach aches or nausea, and some-times experiencing a panic attack. The child will act excessively clingy, plead to stay with the parent, attemptto bargain and negotiate, and mayeven erupt in rage. He will do any-thing to prevent the separation.

    * Panic disorder: This is diagnosedif your child suffers at least twounex-

pected panic or anxiety attacks, which means they come on suddenlyand forno reason, followedbyat leastone month of concern over havinganother attack and losing control

    * Post traumatic stress disorder(PTSD):Childrenwith PTSDmayhaveintense fear and anxiety, become emo-tionally numb or easily irritable, oravoid places, people, or activities afterexperiencing or witnessing a traumat-ic or life-threatening event. Not everychild who experiences or hears abouta traumatic event will develop PTSD.* Social anxiety disorder: This is

characterized by an intense fear ofsocial and performance situationsand activities such as being called onin class or starting a conversationwith a peer. This can significantlyimpair a childs school performance

and attendance, as well as his or herability to socialize with peers and de-velop and maintain relationships.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:Pay attention to your childs feel-

ings. Stay calm when your child be-comes anxious about a situation.

Recognize and praise small ac-complishments. Dont punish mis-takes or lack of progress.

Be flexible and try to maintain anormal routine. Plan for transitions.

    Modify expectations duringstressful periods.

Keep in mind that your childsanxiety disorder diagnosis is not asign of poor parenting. It may addstress to family life, however. It ishelpful to build a support network ofrelatives and friends.
