History

For nearly two decades, the Parish Arts Ministry of Fairlawn Lutheran Church has brought free quality concerts to the Akron area, making it possible for anyone to attend. The University of Akron Concert & Chamber Choirs & Men’s Chorus - “The Journey” Sunday, October 16, 2016, 4pmDirected by Dr. Marie Bucoy-CalavanThe University of Akron’s Choral Program is recognized for its vitality and infectiously passionate performances. Both music majors and non-music majors come together and participate in high caliber musical opportunities. This concert will feature works about the different types of journeys we all walk through in life, including the hauntingly beautiful “Komm, Jesu, Komm” by Johann Sebastian Bach, and pieces by Moses Hogan, Thomas Weelkes, Eric Whitacre, and Carol Barnett.

Singing Angels Sunday, February 26, 2017, 4pmCharles Eversole: Artistic DirectorThe Singing Angels, founded in 1964, is a non-profit organization dedicated to youth development through the highest level of artistic achievement in theperforming arts. Comprised of over 150 singers publicly auditioned from ten counties across NE Ohio, their membership encompasses all races, creeds, and economic levels. Their performances include a wide variety of styles, including Broadway, pop, gospel, patriotic, barbershop harmony, and light classical repertoire. Today’s performance will feature the Children’s Earth Anthem, composed by Charles Eversole and commissioned to be performed nationwide in celebration of the 2016 centennial of the National Park Service.

Baldwin-Wallace Men’s Chorus Sunday, March 19, 2017, 4pmDirected by Frank BianchiThe 110-member BW Men’s Chorus is an offering of the BW Community Music School and is open to men from throughout the Greater Cleveland community (including BW faculty, staff and students). This collaborative effort brings outstanding male chorus singing to NE Ohio. This year the Chorus is celebrating their tenth anniversary. The group has performed to standing-room-only audiences, has collaborated in concert with several outstanding music organizations and has received rave reviews from throughout the Greater Cleveland Community. Thechorus performs a wide variety of chorale literature written especially for the male voice. This includes classical literature, as well as some pop and Broadway.

Eleventh Annual High School Choirs - “Music Festival” Sunday, May 7, 2017, 4pmFirestone, Revere, Copley-Fairlawn & Medina High School ChoirsDirected by Chad Pitman, Alice Forney, Basil Kochan & Tyler SkidmoreThe four high school choirs celebrate their eleventh annual High School Music Festival this year. Each choir will perform three selections alone and then join together for a final large-group sacred number (encircling the sanctuary and singing in the round, creating a marvelous effect for the audience).

Master Singers Chorale - “Christmas Concert” Sunday, December 11, 2016, 4pmDirected by Dr. J. D. Goddard This all volunteer, community-based chorale performs annually at Christmas time, presenting new compositions by current composers as well as familiar Christmas selections. They are accompanied by a small ensemble of instruments and occasionally use the organ. Their programs are always inspiring and conclude with a Christmas carol sing-along which is enjoyed by all.

Deans of the American Guild of Organists - “Organ Favorites” Sunday, November 13, 2016, 4pmMary Ragna Yetter, James Storry, Lynn Frey-Steward, Gary J. Pinter Each recitalist will play three favorite compositions. All have served the Akron chapter of the American Guild of Organists as Dean. Mary Ragna is now organist at Kent United Methodist Church; James is Director of Music at the United Methodist Church of Macedonia; Lynn serves as Director of Musicat St. Sebastian Parish in Akron; Gary is Organist-Choir Director at Fairlawn Lutheran.
