 Course  Description  Specifically  designed  for  the  band  director  or  music  teacher  who  is  not  a  percussionist,  this  course  will  review  basic  skill  sets  in  each  of  the  primary  instrument  families,  present  a  variety  of  teaching  strategies  and  offer  new  insights  into  passing  this  knowledge  onto  your  student  drummers.  Writing  for  these  instruments  at  the  elementary  and  intermediate  level  will  be  explored.  What  to  bring:  Bring  a  pair  of  concert  snare  drum  sticks  (Vic  Firth  SD1  or  equivalent),  a  practice  pad  with  stand,  a  set  of  4  matched  marimba  mallets  and  a  pair  of  general  purpose  timpani  mallets.  

Student  Learning  Outcomes  At  the  conclusion  of  this  graduate  music  education  course,  students  will:  

-­‐ Be  able  to  understand  and  use  basic  skill  sets  in  teaching  percussion  -­‐ Identify  the  primary  percussion  instrument  families  and  possess  a  foundational  understanding  of  these  

percussion  instruments  and  how  to  play  them  correctly  -­‐ Understand  and  write  arrangements  that  are  age  and  developmentally  appropriate  for  learners  on  diverse  

percussion  instruments    -­‐ Understand  and  use  practical  and  appropriate  methodology  to  teach  student  percussionists  at  all  levels  -­‐ Learn  and  use  appropriate  pedagogical  techniques  to  effectively  teach  students  how  to  play  an  array  of  

percussion  instruments  at  varying  levels  of  difficulty    

Grading  Criteria  and  Assessment  Methods  

Course  assessment,  evaluation  and  grading  is  based  upon  three  factors:  (1)  the  completion  of  the  pre-­‐assignment,  (2)  active  engagement  in  daily  course  studies  and  (3)  in  the  completion  of  the  final  assignment/post-­‐assignment.    Below  is  the  rubric  that  will  be  utilized  by  faculty  to  assess  and  evaluate  students  in  these  three  categories  of  learning  and  understanding.    Please  note  that  pre-­‐assignment  and  final/post  assignments  should  be  included  in  the  course  outline  at  the  end  of  this  syllabus.

Provides  basic/unsatisfactory  content  and  concepts  in  preparation  for  this  course.

Absences  Due  to  the  compressed  nature  of  the  five-­‐day  intensive  course  structure,  absences  from  class  will  not  be  accepted.  Students  who  arrive  late  to  class  or  leave  early  will  be  held  accountable  for  missed  time  through  additional  assignments  to  be  completed  outside  of  course  hours.    Technology  Policies  on  Technology  may  be  found  in  the  Course  Catalogue.        Class  Format  All  summer  music  studies  courses  that  meet  in-­‐person  are  five-­‐day  intensive  courses  typically  running  for  8  hours  per  day.  Students  are  responsible  for  preparation  of  materials,  for  engaging  in  course  content  as  per  the  course  description,  and  in  being  responsive  to  completion  of  pre  and  post  coursework  as  detailed  in  the  course  outline.  Courses  offered  online  may  be  in  a  different  format  and  may  run  for  a  longer  amount  of  time,  specific  to  the  needs  and  intents  of  the  course  content.

 Course  Outline:      

CLASS  1  –  7/13   Course   intro,   snare   drum   (assembly,   playing   position,   grips,   head   and   snare  adjustment,   common   problems,   note   reading,   rolls   and   other   ornamentations,  rudiments,  maintenance),  snare  solo  composition  assigned  and  explained.  

CLASS  2  –  7/14   Conclude   snare   drum   unit   including   duet   performance.   Snare   drum   solos  performed   and   submitted   for   evaluation.   Melodic   percussion   unit   introduction  (playing   position,   mallet   selection,   note   reading,   double   stops,   rolls,   four   mallet  technique,   maintenance).   Percussion   ensemble   composition   assigned   and  explained  for  submission  on  7/17.  

CLASS  3  –  7/15   Conclude   melodic   percussion   unit   including   duet   and   ensemble   performance.  Auxiliary  percussion  unit   including  playing   techniques   for   tambourine,  woodblock,  triangle.  Timpani  unit   introduction   (set-­‐up,  mallets,  grips,  playing  position,   tuning,  rolls,   note   reading,   special   techniques,   maintenance).   Time   for   percussion  ensemble  composition.  

CLASS  4  –  7/16   Conclusion  of  timpani  unit.  Bass  Drum/Cymbal  unit  introduction  (playing  positions,  grips,   rolls,   instrument   selection,   cymbal   strokes,   tam-­‐tam,   finger   cymbals,  suspended   cymbal,   maintenance).   Conclude   auxiliary   percussion   techniques  including   Latin   instruments   and   any   remaining   color   instruments.   Percussion  ensemble   literature,   application   of   acquired   playing   skills.   Time   for   percussion  ensemble  composition.  

CLASS  5  –  7/17   Conclusion  of   percussion  ensemble  performance   including  performance/rehearsal  of   individual   student   compositions  with   the  composer   conducting   /rehearsing   the  ensemble  and  addressing  performance  practices  with  appropriate  interventions  as  needed.  Course  wrap  up.  

 

POST-­‐COURSE  ASSIGNMENT  Students   will   be   expected   to   create   a   percussion   ensemble   utilizing   at   minimum,   some   form   of   keyboard  percussion,   snare  drum,  auxiliary  percussion  and   timpani.  Melodic  material  may  be  original,  based  on  holiday  tunes   or   from   another   source.   Length  will   be   dependent   on  melodic   content   but   should   not   be   less   than   32  measures  in  length.  Students  will  submit  a  score  due  one  week  after  class  ends.
