It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 30th International Congress on Occupational Health organized in Cancun from 18-23 March 2012. The Congress, held for the first time in Mexico, will be a landmark event in the long history of the International Commission on Occupational Health, known as ICOH. Our triennial congresses since the first Congress in Milan in 1906 have always played a front-line role in protecting and promoting the health of workers. This role is particularly vital at the time of rapid changes in employment structures, working life and work environments along with the globalizing economy. These changes bring about complex health and safety risks for workers in all the sectors. It is timely to focus on workplace improvement actions applicable to managing complex risks in increasingly diversifying work situations.
The ICOH 2012 Congress will bring together occupational health researchers and practitioners worldwide to share and learn from each other the most current advances in the wide field of occupational health. The site of the Congress has been shifted from Monterrey where it was originally planned to Cancun to ensure the security of the pa earch and practice. The debate in Cancun will centre around the Congress theme of Occupational Health for All: from Research to Practice with focuses on proactive risk management procedures and innovative solution-based approaches. The progress in these aspects is seen in the broad-ranging activities of 34 ICOH Scientific Committees that will actively take part in the organization of the symposia, mini-symposia and special sessions of the 2012 Congress. Serial sessions will be organized to promote regional and network-based cooperation for achieving good occupational health practices. The discussion and dialogue at the Congress will surely help us respond to urgent needs of workers and better understand the principles and ethics of our own occupational activities.
We are delighted to confirm the excellent arrangements for making the Congress successful and productive. The organizers headed by our eminent leader Dr. Jorge A. Morales-Camino with renowned colleagues are assuring a top-level scientific program, reasonable fees and excellent facilities for realizing truly interactive exchanges of new developments. A special effort is done to provide support for participants from countries in development as in our previous congresses. It is sincerely hoped that the outcomes of the Congress will help our colleagues in different working situations bridge research and practice towards improving and promoting the health of all workers.

Dear ICOH members,
Please accept this warm invitation to participate in the 30th Congress of the International Commissionon Occupational Health (ICOH) to be held in Mexico, from Sunday, March 18 to Friday, March 23, 2012. The 2012 ICOH Organizing Committee has made the following three commitments to those attending this year’s Congress:
1. A superior level scientific program,2. Lower entry fees than those at the two previous ICOH Congresses, and3. Excellent congress facilities.
These commitments were expressed to ICOH members at the closing ceremony of the 2009 ICOH Congress in Cape Town, since when we have been making every effort to honor these pledges.
The theme of the upcoming Congress is “Occupational Health for All: From Research to Practice”, and is based on the belief that all workers of the world require health protection to prevent any occupational disease or injury as part of their human and labor rights. To achieve such an important goal, we need to take advantage of new scientific information to develop innovative guidelines, new approaches and procedures, training courses, and so on that can be applied to workers’ health protection. Over 90% of scientific papers on occupational health are written in developed countries, though it is in developing countries where the most compelling needs in this field are a part of everyday reality. The Mexico Congress aims to build a bridge between research and practice in order to help developed and developing countries improve the level of health protection for workers and help prevent occupational injuries and diseases.
The Congress will deal with subjects relevant to occupational health at its ten plenary sessions, thirtysemi-plenary and up to two hundred mini-symposiums. The languages used at the Congress will be English, French and Spanish. A number of grants will be available to support speakers attending from developing countries.
