PDF Workflow

• Receive Native Files (Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator, Etc.) and Scans from Client

• Process Hi Res Scans w/Retouching & Color Correx & Preflight Client Files– Utilizing PreFlight Pro and Manual Check

• Output Analog or Approval Patch Color Proofs

PDF Workflow (Cont.)

• Review Patch Proofs Internally

• Send out color patch proofs for client OK

• Patch is returned and corrected if needed, if not, scans are submitted for assembly with files

• Job is assembled in Native applications

PDF Workflow (Cont.)

• Files are trapped in Illustrator or Trapwise and placed within Quark for completion– Traps must be set as Overprint and Knockout due to

Postscript’s inability to hold trap information

• Generate PS File and then Distill into PDF using Publication or CTP Specifications

• Preview, verify, and printout PDF file to an Epson Color Print for hardcopy compare to client laser

PDF Workflow (Cont.)

• Email or FTP PDF file to client for “soft proof” approval or changes

• If client has corrections, they are annotated using Acrobat 4.0’s verbal and written capabilities

• Annotated file given to Mac Dept for processing of changes, without the need of Production translation

PDF Workflow (Cont.)

• Mac / Retouching Operator can view annotated file on screen while making alterations to Native file

• Process repeats itself with resubmission of PDF file to client for approval

• After approval of PDF file, file is sent to imaging of High End Digital proof (Kodak Approval) or film and Matchprint proof

PDF Workflow (Cont.)

• Proofs and/or film is quality checked using Quality Checklist, which includes, but not limited to:

– Trapping

– Line Screen

– Image Quality

– Font Integrity

– Trim / Bleed Sizes

– Color Break

– Corrections Properly Made

PDF Workflow (Cont.)

• If proofs pass Quality Check, they are sent to client for final approval

• If changes are necessary, they are made and process is repeated until final approval is achieved

• After final approval, PDF file is “post flighted” to verify file integrity and printer/publisher specs, film is Quality checked for the same

PDF Workflow (Cont.)

• Once PDF file and film is verified, film is shipped or files are transmitted via AP AdSend, FTP, Email, Media Download

• After shipping, native files, final PDF file and any interim annotated files are archived for future reference and use

PDF Benefits

Improved Productivity

Consistency

Quality

Reduced Production Costs

Workflow Benefits

• No loss in quality since we are still utilizing Hi Res images and conventional logic in planning projects for image quality and trapping needs

• Reduction in Time, Materials, & Delivery costs needed to produce projects, resulting in lower costs and generating higher profit

• Quicker Approval / Turnaround Times

Workflow Benefits (Cont.)

• There is no more liability than a conventional workflow as long as you still integrate the necessary steps to check trapping, image quality, content, and file integrity as you would normally

• Makes client internal routing of proofs easier and faster when used as a “soft proofing” method

PDF File Benefits

• Security Features• Single File Embedded Construction• Visual Check Capability• Small File Format• Cross Platform Capable• No Need for Native Applications

(Quark, Illustrator, Etc.)

PDF File Benefits (Cont.)

• Delivery of ads, direct mail projects with numerous versions, and 100+ Page Catalogs to various printers w/100% success vs. PostScript delivery w/approximately 80% success rate

• 100+ Page Catalog delivered in FAT PostScript exceeded 8 GB of information vs PDF format w/High Quality/Low Compression Settings reduced size to roughly 3.5 GB

PDF File Benefits (Cont.)

• Reduced file size allows for flexible delivery options

• Considerably easier to generate and verify a clean PDF file over PS Files, reducing down time, eliminating wasted materials, meeting tight schedules

• Clean interpreted PDF format provides faster digital proofing cycle and imaging of plates

The Economics of Cross-Media Publishing

引用自: Cimarron Buser, Texterity, Inc.

Cross-Media vs. E-Book

• Cross-Media publishing is an “old” problem– Various printed versions, sizes, on-line databas

es, translated versions

• “E-Book” = another cross-media challenge– Hardware-specific - Dedicated ‘reading experience’

– Software - Cross-platform (but mostly Window PC)

– “Wrappers” - DRM-enabled files

– Multi-Function Devices - PDAs, cellular, hybrids

– Websites with HTML or Applet driven content

The E-Book Landscape

Hardware “Readers”– “E-Book Devices”

• Rocket*, Softbook*, goReader, hiebook

– “Tablets”• Qubit, MS Tablet PC

– “Electronic Ink” (E Ink)

Software “Readers”– Distribution independent

• Adobe eBook Reader, MS Reader, MobiPocket

– Distribution-specific• eBrary, netLibrary, Questia, Pe

anut, Franklin, ION

Multi-function devices – Franklin, Palm, Pocket PCs

– Cellular (WAP, VoiceXML)

DRM “Wrappers”– Sealed Media, Content

Guard

* Acquired by Gemstar, aka REB-1100 and REB-1200* Acquired by Gemstar, aka REB-1100 and REB-1200

Value of Cross Media Workflow

ROI for cross-media workflow increases with:• Complexity

– benefit from structured markup

• Reusability

– re-issued editions, “most” content remains the same

• Number of Versions

– study guides, single chapters, sample books, other “slices”

• Number of Formats

– print, database, eBook, web, wireless

Cross-Media Requirements

• Publisher needs to “co-publish” electronic editions (eBooks) and print book– Marketing & promotional leverage– Ability to offer ‘sneak previews’ in electronic version– All “Retail ready” formats available simultaneously

• eBook Production must integrate with existing “print” workflow– Consistently high quality to reduce proofing– Fast turnaround to hit print ‘Marketing Window’– Complete system status available in real-time– Affordable total cost (internal and external)
