Reflections

Time is an elusive concept and I’ve never been more aware of it than I am right now. Whenever I’ve served in schools, I

lived very much in the moment and at the same time as though I were there for a lifetime. One of my favorite poets, Mary Oliver, has given me much food for thought these past couple of weeks. In her words,

“…to live in this worldyou must be able to do three things

to love what is mortal;to hold it

against your bones knowingyour own life depends on it;

and, when the time comes to let it go,to let it go.”

(Excerpt from “In Blackwater Woods”)This is the first I’ve worked in a school knowing I have just one more year to accomplish what is important for young people. A clearly defined space in time has presented me with an urgency to set priorities. Even though Palm Beach Day Academy isn’t mortal I certainly have held it against my bones as if my life depended on it and I’m working on being able to let it go. What I’ve learned in life is that letting go is comfortable when one feels one’s purpose has been served. I’ve found this to be true in jobs as well as parenting. So this brings me to the question. “What still needs to be done and how

can I best use my time to accomplish it?” Once again I turn to Mary Oliver and her question,

“Tell me, what is it you plan to doWith your one wild and

Precious life?” My question is “What do I plan to do with my one wild and precious year at Palm Beach Day Academy that can best contribute to young people’s lives?” We have a Board that works well together, has many talents, and has been extremely generous in my time here. We have parents who are committed to their children’s education and willing to share their talents and resources so we can provide the best education possible. We have an administrative team that puts every ounce of energy they have into creating the best environment possible for our students, faculty, and staff. We all know we have a faculty that is talented and energetic – never giving up on any young person and always willing to go that extra mile. And we have students that are engaged, hard working, and caring. All of these things will help Palm Beach Day Academy attract an amazing Head of School for the next decade or more. So what do I feel compelled to do with my one wild and precious year? To nurture and savor all that is here and at the same time put my energies into what FCIS pointed out to us in our Accreditation report. From the exterior, our facilities on the Lower Campus do not convey the richness of what is going on inside, it is not attractive to prospective parents and doesn’t instill pride in our students. When one enters the classrooms, you see beauty, organization, and an invitation to learning. However, none of this is true as you drive down Flagler Drive and experience the overall appearance of our campus. We must join together to bring new life to the

Lower Campus. In this issue of The Bridge you will read an article about the new energy we are creating around the project of the Early Childhood Education Center as we prepare for next year. One of the members of the newly formed Advisory Committee sent a very thoughtful e-mail to everyone with the following; “As I left the meeting, I was thinking in Greek about the word philanthropy. It is a compound word derived from 2 Greek words; ultimately meaning friend of humanity and that is our purpose here; giving in pursuit of a better tomorrow.” She helped bring clarity from a place of gratitude inspired by parents who embrace our philosophy and vision for their children and those to follow. I will be working as hard as I can helping everyone in the school community understand the value of the Early Childhood Education Center to the whole school. Understanding how much more our talented teachers can do in a facility that invites learning, understanding how it complements the upper campus with additional sports and performance spaces, and probably least known, understanding that the enrollment on the Lower Campus impacts all of what we do on both campuses. We are in a good position with a wait pool at K, 1st, and 2nd grades, but how can we use our increasingly strong reputation to enhance all of what we do? If we add a classroom on the Lower Campus with an additional 20 students, we are adding approximately $400,000 to the budget that can be spent on programming, technology, etc. on both campuses. This building will definitely impact all of the students on the LC immediately and within another year, the students on both campuses. This is indeed, an example in which we are one school and one community sharing a unique and rich history. Also completing the fund raising for the Early Childhood Education Center this coming year will be enormously helpful in showing the next head our shared commitment to excellence of our parent body and broader community. Yes, time does make a difference. I’ve never felt as driven or passionate about making something happen. Right now I know my calling as I approach, in Mary Oliver’s words, my “one and wild precious year” ahead.

On March 31, Palm Beach Day Academy welcomed approximately thirty alumni to a DayAcademy reunion. Barbara Bayless Close ’67, Ralph and Dolly Greco, Richard Tummon, Dorothea Cvelbar, Tracy Bennett Kramm ’80, Billy Coyle, along with Dr. Van were there to reminisce with everyone. To name a few,

attendees included Loy Anderson ’92, Robert Riva ’03, Fritz Van der Grift ’03, Helin Siris ’01, Jennifer Dean ’96, Frank Baltzell ’68, Susie and John Wean ’67, Alexandra Cook ’89, Lisbeth Barron ’77, Larissa Lester ’01, Sam Fernsell ’76, Nick Bessenroth ’96, Meredith Schultz ’96, and Kathleen Emmett ’89. Raffle drawings brought fun and laughs to the group. A big thank you to E.R. Bradley’s Saloon for providing a special night with great food.

“OH WHAT A NIGHT”!Many thanks to our hostess, Emilia Fanjul Pfeifler ’90 and co-hostesses, Candice Koch Postel ’90 and Christina Murphy Pisa ’86 for a wonderful gathering of long time Palm Beach Day friends in New York City.

Time passed so quickly that evening, as there is never enough time to be with friends. It didn’t seem to matter what year you graduated though. It was about being part of this very unique school. Our hostesses fed us and whet our appetites for more conversation. Graduates from 1968 to 2008 shared a wonderful time. Among the attendees were Lisbeth Barron’77, Charlotte Cudlip Bartol ’81, Preston Bertles ‘03 Alex Bertles ’05, Blair Brandt ’03, Sterling Champion ’05, Beatrice Vollmer Coles ’81, CeCe Conrad ’04, Jack Cooney’97, Laurel Cummings ’03, Kathleen Emmett ’89, Sallie Dinkel Giordano ’80, Karen Kemp Glover ’78, Jason Gordon ’08, Ryan Helfrich ’05, Laurie Arnold Host ’70, Sabrina Idy ’96, Andrew Krumholz ’02, Charlie Metzger ’05, Lela Love ’68, Jeff Prudden ’70, and Olympia Shields ’97.

As the alumni departed, Candice Koch Postel ‘90 gave everyone a smartly packaged rice crispy treat topped with a sugary Palm Beach Day Academy logo.

Thanks to all who attended and, of course, our hostesses.

The 85th Walter H. Butler Field Day ended in a Flamingo victory with a score of 281-223 on February 21. As the day began, both teams, Pelicans and Flamingos, were ready

to compete. They had spent the last few weeks practicing their events and planning strategies. As Saturday’s competition began, the Flamingos and Pelicans seemed evenly matched. Strong individual performances were provided by both teams. By the time the relay events started on the main field, no one could say for sure how the day would end. The Pelicans had a strong showing in the running events and their hopes were lifted and the Flamingos grew worried. Both teams knew the 40 points that were left to be earned in the Tugs-O-War were important. There were a few nail-biters and a few routs, but in the end, the Flamingos had earned enough to take home the 2015 Field Day Cup. Field Day began with the traditional march led by Pelican Captains Addison Gruber & Jack Litten, and Flamingo Captains Talia Chachkes & Ryan Goldfarb. The Middle School Captains for the Pelicans were Ricardo Maduro-Vollmer & Maya Patel, and the Flamingo Middle School Captains were Marcus Heiman & Avery Steinbeck. In keeping with a tradition that began on Field Day’s 75th Anniversary, more than 100 Alumni donned their team colors and led the current students onto the field. Head of School, Dr. Rebecca van der Bogert, welcomed all before Elizabeth Sellers offered the invocation. The race for the flags opened the competition as Pelicans Liam Storkerson and Natalie Zoller ran the length of the field ahead of Flamingos Josef Huainigg and Annabel Dewing. Then, continuing a tradition started last year, PBDA’s Alumni Flamingo and Pelicans enthusiastically faced off in an Alumni Tug-O-War as the current students cheered on their teams. The Flamingos repeated last year’s trouncing of the Pelicans and are now 2-0 in the Alumni Tug-O-War record book.

Commencement June 5, 2015

In the last few weeks of school, the pace at PBDA is in perpetual acceleration, right up to the morning of Commencement. That’s when many

realize that this day will be the last of its kind and that now is a good time to slow down and take it in. For our 8th and 9th Graders, the next few hours will be the very last of many hours and days and years that they have been together. After today, although many new adventures will begin, the one the students have shared for most of their young lives will end. So, in the happy mingling that precedes the formality of Commencement, that realization hangs in the background of every handshake, snapshot, and conversation. In that brief window of time between the last day of exams and the start of the ceremony, much is shared, remembered, forgiven and appreciated. And then it is time to line up. After the students and faculty had marched into the auditorium, Dr. van der Bogert opened the ceremony with a welcome. Ninth Grader Ryan Goldfarb gave the Invocation and eloquently expressed the Ninth Grade’s gratitude to their parents, teachers and school. Dr. Van then called the winners of the Academic Book Prizes to the stage (See Outstanding Students, page 8). Book Prizes are awarded to those students the faculty view as outstanding in each of the offered subjects. To earn a Book Prize, a student must have one of the highest averages in a particular subject, and must also have impressed the teacher with his or her enthusiasm, interest and perseverance. Dr. Van then honored nineteen faculty members for their years of service to Palm Beach Day Academy (See box, page 9). Richard Wagener was honored with the 10th annual presentation of the Adele Shook Merck Excellence in Teaching Award. Presentation of the Cup Awards followed. Palm Beach Day Academy’s Cup Awards are indicators of the personal qualities valued by the school. The Upper School 5th & 6th and 7th - 9th Grade Improvement Prizes were established by the school to recognize the students who have shown the most overall growth as students and as school citizens. Josef Huainigg received this year’s 7 - 9th Grade Improvement Prize. Bella Schneider was awarded the 5th & 6th Grade Improvement Prize. The Fletcher Hunt Memorial Cup was

presented to the school in Fletcher Hunt’s memory by Colonel and Mrs. Robert F. Hunt, Jr. It was the wish of the Colonel and Mrs. Hunt that, for the first year, the cup be awarded to the student in the 6th Grade who attained the highest scholastic average, and that each subsequent year it

be awarded one grade higher. It would accompany Fletcher’s class through the school, culminating in its presentation to a senior in June, 1967. After that date, it returned to the 6th Grade as a permanent award. Caroline McCann received the Fletcher Hunt Memorial Cup for 2015. The Chapin Cup is presented at Graduation to the 5th or 6th Grader who, in the opinion of the faculty, has made the greatest over-all contributions to his or her school and classmates. In awarding the cup, the faculty considers the student’s academic, athletic, service and school spirit contributions. Sixth Grader, Isabel Carden, was awarded the 2014 Chapin Cup. The Essay Cup was donated to the school by Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Jose in honor of their daughter Polly, a former PBDA student. The Cup is to encourage good writing among the students in the Upper School, and is awarded to the students who have submitted the most outstanding educational autobiography, research paper and character sketch during the year. The Katie Tummon ‘03 Educational Autobiography award went to Perry Middleton & Abigail Wandoff. The award for Character Sketch went to Talia Chachkes. Outstanding Students was earned by Ryan Goldfarb. Addison Gruber received the Alumni Award. The Alumni Award, established by the alumni committee in 1989, recognizes the graduate who has consistently demonstrated consideration for his or her fellow students, the faculty and the school. The Robert W. Bayless Scholar/Athlete Award was established by the Bayless family in memory of Robert Bayless, Director of Athletics and Chairman of the English Department from 1958 until his death in 1973. The award recognizes an outstanding student in the Upper School for a combination of Honor Roll academics and athletic endeavor. Annabel Dewing and Nathanial Gramentine were the recipients of the Scholar/Athlete Award this year. The Faculty Cup was donated anonymously by a parent who wished to provide a high academic goal for the school’s superior students. It is awarded each year to the Upper School student with the highest academic average for the year, provided the average is 90 or above. Daniela Garcia earned the Faculty Cup this year. The 1958 Cup was established by the Class of 1958 to be awarded to the Upper School student who has set an outstanding example for his or her classmates. This

award embodies such qualities as responsibility and willingness to serve, concern for others, personal integrity, and excellence in citizenship, scholarship and sportsmanship. Talia Chachkes was presented with the 1958 Cup. The Holder Cup was

given to the school by Mrs. Holder to perpetuate the memory of Dan Holder and to serve as

a source of inspiration to boys and girls in the Upper School. Dan Holder was a member of the faculty from 1949 until his sudden death in 1952. He stood for all that was fine in education. The Cup is awarded “for the student who, through his integrity, school spirit, scholastic endeavor and good sportsmanship, has contributed most to the life of the school.” The Holder Cup is

SPRING 2015 PERFORMING ARTS PRODUCTIONS

Some Show! The 3rd Graders performed the 4th Annual Third Grade Musical on Thursday, May 21st. It has become tradition that

the Third Grade Musicals are all adaptations of children’s literature, so this year the students put on an amazing production of “Charlotte’s Web.” From Wilbur - James Caprio, to the fancy spider, Charlotte - Chloe Levine, to the dirtiest rat in town, Templeton - Roger Ramos, and all the farmers and

barnyard animals in between, the performers charmingly brought this classic favorite to life. Parents and Lower Campus children laughed and cried along with the famous storybook characters as they followed Wilbur’s journey to becoming “Some Pig,” truly “Terrific” and “Humble” indeed.

The musical is an exciting culminating event for the 3rd Grade students as they prepare to cross the bridge to the Upper Campus for

their middle school years. In the words of the baby spider, “We’re leaving on the warm updraft. This is our moment for setting forth. We are going out into the world to make webs for ourselves!”

Fantastic performance, Third Graders! Your teachers look forward to following your music and theater careers on the Upper Campus!

PBDA Fourth Graders ended their year-long study of Florida History with a Magical History Tour. The students told the story of Palm

Beach County through songs and poems on Friday, May 29 in the Smith Family Theater. Throughout the course of this year and every year, the Fourth Graders learn about local Florida history through field trips and regular visits from Mr. Tony Marconi, Education Coordinator for the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach.

T he Ponce de Leon Ballroom at The Breakers Palm Beach was transformed into a garden wonderland on April 10th as more

than 250 Palm Beach Day Academy trustees, parents, alumni, past parents, grandparents, and special friends attended the 2015 Feather Ball. PBDA parents Jean Koeppel, Donna Lloyd George, Susan Miller, and Marzia Precoda chaired the much anticipated signature fundraising event. Grand Sponsors of the Feather Ball were Margaritaville and the Schumacher Automotive Group. Guests first kept busy perusing more than 300 silent auction items, donated by PBDA supporters, families, and faculty. Bidding activity placed through guests’ cellular phones made shopping a breeze and allowed guests to move freely throughout the room, engaging with old friends and making new friends while keeping close watch on their favorite auction items. Among the most sought after silent auction items each year are items generously donated by PBDA Faculty. Chairman of the Board Scott Johnson and Head of School Dr. Rebecca van der Bogert welcomed guests and introduced faculty member Jim Gramentine, who served as Master of Ceremonies for the Lucky Feather portion of the program. The Lucky Feather raffle enables one lucky Feather Ball guest to win a Live Auction item for $100. The night continued with the highlight of the evening - the live auction - and included a spectacular dinner and an evening of dancing to the sounds of Soul Survivors. Live Auction Master of ceremonies, faculty member, parent, and alumna Jan-Marie Cook was captivating as the event auctioneer. Her love for the school and community added a genuine charm to the live auction portion of the evening, where priceless items, exotic trips, sporting events, and once in a lifetime opportunities helped contribute to the overall netting of more than $415,000 for the school. A Call From the Heart appeal in support of PBDA Transportation led by PBDA parent and coach Patti Griffin closed out the evening’s fundraising activities. More than 60 Auction Committee members worked tirelessly in the months before the event planning all aspects of the evening, creating class projects, collecting auction items, helping with décor and invitations, setting up the event, and much more. THE CAMPAIGN FOR PALM BEACH DAY ACADEMY

THANK YOU TO THE FOLLOWING CORPORATIONS WHO HAVE GENEROUSLY SPONSORED THE SCHOOL THIS YEAR.

Great Expectations Advisory Committee Exudes Enthusiasm for the

Future of PBDA

We are excited to announce the creation of the Great Expectations Advisory Committee. The committee

is made up of parents who are interested in the future of the school, particularly the Early Childhood Education Center. At the last meeting, Dr. Van announced that PBDA is fortunate to add Lyanne Azqueta, mother of kindergarten student Lian, as Co-Chair of the capital campaign. Lyanne is very passionate about our school, as she is an alumna from a family that has supported Palm Beach Day for years. Also, Dr. Van introduced Cynthia Kanai, as our new Director of Development. Cynthia has been responsible for bringing many new projects to life at PBDA including the China Partnership, Lead with Honor and Bulldog Outreach, the community service program, for all students. Cynthia is committed to our school, as she has taught on the Upper Campus for more than twenty years.

Parent involvement is essential to student success. Our parents are willing to do their

part in every area of their children’s lives, and more, including supporting a secure, up-to-date, stimulating learning environment at PBDA . We believe our children are receiving a world-class education. Shouldn’t we strive for a world-class environment to sustain our school for another 95 years?

In the past five years, PBDA has raised $12,000,000, which has renovated the Upper Campus, built the Smith Family Theatre in the Matthews Center for Performing Arts, purchased the Unity Church, constructed parking at the Lower Campus, laid important infrastructure for the new buildings, created an English Chair honoring Ralph Greco, and completed the Patterson Masters program for our teachers. Of that $12,000,000, PBDA board members contributed $7,000,000.

The Board has also contributed $2,500,000 towards the new buildings on the Lower Campus, with another $700,000 coming from other donors. Our Board is committed to the future of Palm Beach Day Academy.

The school trustees are confident that

families new to the school will appreciate the fact that their children are associated with a great school, a school built by those who came before. We are counting on present and future members of the school community to enhance what is available for their children, and, in their turn, ensure the school’s future.

PBDA teachers and administration continually focus on providing the best education for our students. We want them to benefit from an environment that stimulates their minds; we want them to see themselves as capable learners, to be able to face and manage challenges, to speak up, to attempt more, to question, to show compassion, and to work hard toward individual goals and collaborative efforts.

Palm Beach Day Academy has been providing a quality education since 1921. With your help, our tradition of excellence will continue for present and future generations.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTMICHELLE FEUER EIGELBERGER ‘88

Michelle Feuer is an award-winning television producer

and private investigator with almost two decades of experience in breaking news and news magazine production. For the past eight years, Michelle has worked as a top field and development producer for the CBS NEWS broadcast 48 Hours. Michelle is widely regarded as one of the industry’s top bookers always coming back with “the get” and routinely scoring highly sought after exclusives coveted by competing networks. She was recently part of a CBS team honored with an Edward R Murrow Award for a story about international adoption. Prior to joining CBS NEWS, Michelle spent nine years at NBC NEWS, including in their London bureau covering the death of Princess Diana before returning to New York City. She also spent months at Ground Zero in the wake of 9/11 and overseas producing footage for an Emmy-nominated program hosted by then anchor Tom Brokaw. She was the London-based producer for NBC’s Dateline during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Michelle’s work as a go-it-alone embedded journalist has produced rare and remarkable footage. Her months with the Bronx Homicide Unit of the NYPD, the Boston Crime Scene Investigation Unit and the Coast Guard Key West produced compelling documentaries for prime time television. Michelle began her career as the overnight producer for NBC’s affiliate feed service, Newschannel. She has won numerous Emmys, Gracies, and ABA Gavel Awards. Michelle holds degrees from Denison University and the London School of Economics.

What has been the highlight of your career? A true career forces you to grow and challenge yourself at every footstep, so the total career should be one big highlight. I

have loved the entire journey from starting out as an intern at NBC’s London bureau through where I am now developing and producing shows for CBS 48 Hours. The highlight has been covering the gamut: from the glamorous, to catastrophic world events, historic moments in time, murder cases, deep investigative cases, and being able to travel around the world as a storyteller and news gatherer.

Did anyone or anything influence that career highlight? One of the highlights of my career while at NBC was working with Tom Brokaw during the attacks in Afghanistan. At one point, we were on an aircraft carrier at an unknown location in the middle of the Arabian Sea. Planes took off with bombs attached and returned empty. I remember one night the Blue Diamond fighter pilots whom I was following let me stand out on the flight deck as the fighter jets came back from their missions. It was exhilarating to watch the jets come in around 150 mph in the darkness and land on a moving flight deck with saltwater spraying everywhere. Not a bad way to spend an evening. You have traveled all over the world with your TV producing career, what has been the most interesting?

Every single place I go, I find something inspiring. I have seen almost every state in America because of my job, and I find no matter how different the landscape or economics, that people are fundamentally the same everywhere. I am currently loving the southern states. I also like the surprise of going to a place that I would never even think of buying a plane ticket to see, like Saudi Arabia and Bahrain where I randomly ended up for a story at one point.

You have a second career as a private investigator, where has that lead you? Patrick J. McKenna is one of the best private investigators in the world, and he is based in West Palm Beach. He handled cases for OJ Simpson, Yoko Ono, and the Kennedy family amongst others. I knew I had to somehow become part of his world, so I asked him to sponsor me for my PI license and he did. One day, I just might open my own PI agency.

Will there be another career? If so, what would it be? I wish I could be an interior decorator and make my homes look at good as Celerie Kemble ‘88 does. I wish I could be as brilliant of a businesswoman, writer and thinker as Meredith Bagby ‘88. Or be as good of a mother as Betsy Titcomb ’88 is. I am constantly inspired by my Palm Beach Day School friends and look back with happiness on my years there.

While at PBDS what teachers and/or classes made a lasting impression? My first newspaper writing was for the Palm Beach Day School Bulldog newspaper. That was the beginning of my love of journalism and interviewing. Mr. Greco, Mr. Bayless, Mrs. Bayless, Mrs. Sarko, Mr. Sarko, Mrs. Close, Mrs Mendoza, Mrs, Rafter, and Jesse the janitor. Loved them all.

What or whom, when you think of PBDS, makes you smile? My husband, Inigo Eigelberger ’87, who also attended PBDS.

What advice, if any, do you have for future Palm Beach Day Academy students? A monster work ethic, inner confidence, and true self esteem are must haves.
