(Clap while singing.)

Everybody ought to know, ought to know, ought to know.

Everybody ought to know that Jesus loves YOU!

(Gently touch someone near you.)

People near me ought to know, ought to know, ought to know.

People near me ought to know that Jesus loves YOU!

(Encourage children to look at and wave to someone far from them.)

Far-away people ought to know, ought to know, ought to know.

Far-away people ought to know that Jesus loves YOU!

(Adults in the room stand.)

Big people ought to know, ought to know, ought to know.

Big people ought to know that Jesus loves YOU!

(Children in room stand.)

Small people ought to know, ought to know, ought to know.

Small people ought to know that Jesus loves YOU!

(Sing this verse to child next to you.)

Every neighbor ought to know, ought to know, ought to know.

Every neighbor ought to know that Jesus loves YOU!

Lesson Introduction Activity:

Playing Music & Singing to God Based on activity in Gospel Light’s Movers and Shakers.

Do: Gather items to use for musical instruments. Empty oatmeal container as a

drum, foil pan & spoon, make a kazoo out of toilet papers rolls, wax paper & a

rubberband, shake keys, etc. Interact with musical instruments.

Talk About: • Sometimes we use instruments when we sing songs.

Today we will hear what happened when Paul and Silas sang about Jesus.

Bible Story: Read the story from The Read With Me Bible.

Paul and Silas in Prison The Read With Me Bible

Page 424 – 429

Some men in Philippi grabbed Saul, who was also known as Paul, and Silas. Paul and Silas were

thrown into prison. The jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. He put them deep

inside the prison. He fastened their feet so they couldn’t get away. About midnight Paul and

Silas were praying and singing to God. The prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there

was a powerful earthquake. It shook the prison from the top to bottom. All the prison doors

flew open. Everybody’s chains came loose. The jailer woke up. He saw the prison doors were

open. He pulled out his sword to kill himself. He thought the prisoners had escaped. “Don’t

harm yourself!” Paul shouted. “We’re all here!” The jailer rushed in, shaking with fear. He fell

down in front of Paul and Silas. Then, he brought them out. He asked, “Sirs, what must I do to

be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus. Then you and your family will be saved.”

Right away he and all his family were baptized. The jailer brought Paul and Silas into his house.

He set a meal in front of them. He and his whole family were filled with joy. They had become

believers in God.

Discussing the story: Ask: What happened to Paul and Silas? What did they do while they were in prison? What

happened when the earthquake shook the prison? What did the jailer do after he learned the

prisoners were still there?

Say: Paul and Silas were singing in prison because they were not afraid. They were not afraid

because they knew God was taking care of them. Paul and Silas told the jailer about Jesus. The

jailer and his family became believers.

Pray: Thank God for Jesus. Thank God for missionaries. Ask God to give us the courage to tell

others about Jesus.

Craft Activity:

Paul and Silas in Jail

Let your child/children color their picture of Paul and Silas in jail. Help them glue the bars onto

their jail cell.

Bible Activity:

Paul and Silas

Lead your family in playing this game, similar to “London Bridge”. As everyone sings the song, have

two people (you may want to start out with adults) form a bridge, by holding hands in an arch position.

Then have family members line up and walk under the bridge as the song is sung.

Paul and Silas preached he Word

Preached the Word,

Preached the Word.

Paul and Silas preached the Word,

But they got thrown in jail.

(Have bridge lower and capture a child.)

Praising God will set them free,

(Rock the child back and forth in the lowered bridge.)

Set them free,

Set them free.

Praising God will set them free;

They got the victory!

(Open Bridge)

Repeat until everyone has been “caught”.

Family Devotion Time

Read the story about Paul & Silas and then do this fun activity.

Earthshaking Experience (Adapted from; Pray and Play Bible for Young Children, Group; 1997, pg. 173)

Have family members stand around a bed sheet. Choose one person at a time to sit

in the middle of the sheet. When you say: “Earthquake coming!” have those who

are standing around the bed sheet pick up the edge of the sheet and shake it back

and forth, jiggling the person in the middle. Then call: “Jailbreak!” and have the

“earthquake” stop so the person in the middle can jump up and off the bed sheet.

Choose another person to be in the middle. Continue until everyone has had a

chance to be in the middle.

Paul and Silas Tell Others About Jesus Scripture Reference

Acts 16:16-34

PRAYER FOR YOUR CHILD

Father, gently build endurance into (child’s name’s) life. Give him/her a heart that helps him/her keep on pressing on to tell

others the Good News of Jesus Christ. (Gal. 6:9)

Things to talk about:

· What is some good news about Jesus we like to tell?

· What is something we can thank God for?

Words to pray together: Dear God, Thank you for the good news that Jesus is alive. Thank You for (repeat things your child mentioned). In Jesus name,

amen.

Jesus Loves You Ball Get a large inflatable globe ball or just use a beach ball. Before you begin, say to everyone “Jesus wants us to

tell others that “Jesus Loves them”. Sit everyone in a circle. Take turns rolling the ball to each other.

When someone rolls the ball they should say, “Jesus Loves You”. Repeat the game and say the person’s name

as you roll them the ball “Jesus loves _______”.
