This exhibition at the Kathmandu Guest House is a joint effort between the Nepal Heritage Society, the Nepal Tourism Board, the Kathmandu Guest House, the Federation of Handicrafts Association of Nepal, and the Hotel Association of Nepal; on behalf of the Nepal Heritage Society, I express my sincere gratitude. Special credit goes to the coordination committee mem-bers and the painting selection board, particularly Mr. Lok Chitrakar, Mr. Deepak Joshi, and Mr. Udaya Charan

Shrestha for their untiring efforts in making this exhibition a grand success. Deep appreciation goes to the celebrated artists who have participated in this exhibition, without their support this exhibition would not have come to light. Lastly, heartfelt thanks go to Mr. RC Cone for his continuous, serious efforts to help design this catalog and for publicizing the exhibition.

I hope this exhibition will not only help in introducing the renowned artists and their exquisite artwork, but it will also highlight the value and importance of this traditional art form. This exhibition surely encourages the artists endeavors and encourages them to continue our intangible heritage, which once lost, is lost forever. I am sure the visitors, tourists, and potential buyers will have a good opportunity to get direct con-tact with the artists and to learn more details about their art, and, furthermore, enjoy being in the presence of this sacred art form that is indigenous to Nepal.

  • SNpresidents message

Art that can definitively be called Paubh (pronounced po-va) dates back beyond the 7th century. Often misinterpreted as the more popular Thanka, the Paubh is a rich, traditional art form that is unique to the Kathmandu Valley.

Following ancient painting traditions, Paubh artists painstakingly create these masterful pieces using color refined from natural stone, ritualistic painting practices, and an attention to detail that is approved by the depicted Deity themselves.

As of late, traditional forms of painting, such as the Paubh, have declined in popularity. Only now with the many eager, young, and talented artists around the Kathmandu valley can the Paubh be brought back. With the help of the Nepal Heritage Society, the said artists, and the international community; only together can we continue this beautiful art form into the future.

With our Paubh exhibition, the National Heritage Societys (NHS) objective is 4-fold. Firstly, create a space for the Paubh community to gather and exchange ideas, along with updating the community about new trends and developments. Second, expand knowledge and expose Paubh paintings on an international level. Third, develop partnerships with the painters so the events and paintings can be continued into the future. Lastly, raise money for our continuing effort in heritage preservation.
