The last 12 months have been tough and challenging but I’m pleased to say that despite these circumstances we have made solid progress on several fronts.

It’s been a tough year for Australia this year due to the abolition of Carbon Tax and general slowdown in the Australian economy. During the year we opened a new branch in Townsville, North Queensland and also converted the Gold Coast joint venture into a fully owned branch operation. With these two outlets in Queensland we now have 14 outlet stores in Australia.

New Zealand is looking very promising with increased business confidence and huge activity in the kiwifruit industry, dairy industry and Christchurch rebuild.

We relocated our factory in Bangkok, Thailand earlier this year to a brand new enlarged facility to enable us cope with the increase in demand from existing and new markets.

Currently it appears that 2015 is going to be much better, busier and full of opportunities for us all. We at Patton are well prepared, with one of the very best teams possible within our industry, to take the Patton Group further to new heights in the near future.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your efforts and support throughout the year.

Finally along with my family I’d like to wish you and your families a merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. Have a wonderful, safe and enjoyable break over this festive season.

Patton NZ Customer Service Staff Meeting

On 13th and 14th August, Patton NZ held its annual national customer service meeting at Castaways Lodge,

Waiuku south of Auckland, an exclu-sive and stunning ocean front venue. It was an opportunity to meet the new faces and to catch up with the rest of the team.

After arrival on day one Team Elevate, specialists in team building, ran a survival event which included several fun challenges. The group was divided into two tribes ‘Team Mental Block’ and ‘Team Monarch’ and competed against each other at Wii, blindfold tent build-ing, river crossing and catapults where eggs were shot at a target 70 meters away. The whole team building exercise

was great fun with ‘Team Mental Block’ declared the winners.

The afternoon was devoted to a team meeting and the day wrapped up by a session and dinner with William Pike, a sought after motivational speaker and role model to NZ youth. William was one of two young climbers caught in a volcanic eruption on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu in 2007. He suffered numerous life threatening injuries and, as a result, his right leg was amputat-ed below the knee, needing extensive recovery and rehabilitation. William shared his inspirational story and everyone was reminded that every day is a good day.

Day two was all about business – the

morning with the accounts team, followed by a company lunch, Rothenberg training in the afternoon and a final catch up with Philip Hitchins before departure.

This event was organised to acknowledge and to pass on the Company’s sincere appreciation to all customer service staff who play such a critical role in the success of the business.

ROTHENBERGER Mid-Year Winter Sale

Hawkes Bay Wine Show

What is the best retreat in the cold and wet of winter? How about some yummy hotdogs? Or, how about

super-hot prices on Rothenberger’s manifolds, VAC pumps, REC pumps, hoses, scales, screwdrivers. But wait, what if you can have them both? Thanks to Paul Fowler, Rothenberger NZ Sales Manager, both ideas became a reality.

On Friday 15th August, from 7:30 to 9:30am, hotdogs were ready to serve and Rothenberger’s products set up in the Patton Auckland office at Mt Wellington.

Customers enjoyed the delicious hotdogs and took advance of the discounted prices offered by Rothenberger.

In early September, Patton Hastings teamed up with Hawke’s Bay Refrigeration took part in the Hawkes Bay Wine Show. PattonPak Scroll Water Chillers (PZB600W SS Unit)

TOUCH RUGBY

Over the last few years there have been sugges-tions of setting up a touch team, and this year the right opportunity came along. The idea for the team was not only to have fun and socialise

among our colleagues but also to help people with health and fitness and build not just a team but a family.

There has been a lot of early Sunday morning training sessions, through rain and hail (literally), but its always great fun. There are people of all different skill levels, peo-ple who have never played before to players with a stong knowledge of the game, so there is always someone to help you out if you are unsure and make you feel comfortable.

But all of this would not be possible without the help of a few - Ray who ensured we looked smart and professional in our jerseys, Inesi and Alfonso who ran the training and without whom we would be lost and Philip who made this all possible.

So far we have had three games and won all of them (by a mile). Even though we didn’t set out to win, our training has paid off and we just need to keep working as a team and hopefully keep the winning streak going!

Our games are every Wednesday at 6.00pm on the College Rifles pitch in Remuera. We love to have supporters, so please feel free to come and cheer the Panthers on!

Marrying

It wasn’t long ago when a pencil and paper was all that was required when it came to design. It was simple that way, the no fuss approach. The manufacturing process occurred dynamically rather than using a pre-defined plan. This method was successful, but did have its drawbacks.

DesignwithInnovation

Patton’s first manufactured commercial fridge cabinets were all designed using the basic tools of the trade. In the 1920’s there was little other alternative to using pencil and paper when designing the specially crafted display units. If design changes were required the old saying “back to the draw-ing board” was the only option. One could only imagine the time it would take even for the smallest alteration or revision.

During the remainder of the century design tool advances were slow until the arrival of the PC. The late 1990’s saw CAD software become readily available and affordable to all. Patton began to transfer all hand drawings into 2D AutoCAD pre-millennium. Many benefits came from this allowing quicker updates and easier document control.

In recent years Patton’s design evolution has taken a giant leap forward using the latest technology and in-novative software available. This was required as more markets opened up across the Australasia and South East Asia. Growing the company required faster design and production, particularly with the amount of sheet metal being used. Roughly 75% of design is sheet metal work, and by moving to a 3D system, Patton anticipated that designing parts, making flat patterns, and laser-cutting pieces would be more efficient and effective. The transition from 2D AutoCAD to 3D Solid-Works enabled Patton to develop custom-designed products with greater accuracy and shorter lead times.

Improved accuracy saves time and material

Improved accuracy saves time and materialUsing SolidWorks sheet metal design tools, Patton has not only carved time from its development process, but is also maximizing material usage, reducing scrap and rework. Because sheetmetal parts are more accurate with SolidWorks, the engineering team has greater confidence in its flat patterns and has eliminated grinding and retrofitting operations on the shop floor.

Page 9: Patton Press December 2014

Patton Press | Issue 12 | December 2014 9

“When I design a sheet metal part in SolidWorks, it’s probably within a couple tenths of a millimetre of what I design it to be, so that when it comes off the laser and gets folded, there is very little scrap and we can assemble everything up exactly,” explains Mechanical Design Engineer Cameron Wynniatt. “Instead of just putting one large flat pattern on a sheet, other smaller pieces can be added by our sheetmetal supplier. Because we know the parts are very accurate, we can use the material more effectively.

“What we see on the screen in SolidWorks is exactly what the part is going to be,” Wynniatt continues. “If it fits in SolidWorks, we know that it fits. That confidence really speeds up our manufacturing operations.”

Streamline and validate frame design quicklySolidWorks weldments design functionality is a key tool when it comes to structural frame design at Patton. Weldment structures can

be designed as a single multibody part, sketching the basic frame-work, creating structural members with groups of sketch segments, and adding elements like gussets and end caps to complete the structure. Designs are created quickly and generate cut lists and bills of material needed for manufacturing.

Patton engineers utilise SolidWorks Simulation to virtually test new designs. Linear loads, constraints and boundary conditions are added to determine the response of parts and assemblies due to the effect of load and force. The resultant analysis provides information on model performance, especially focusing on stress, strain, deformed shape and displacement. Resolving issues or making improvements can then be made after interpreting the results.

Design Cycle

3D visualization brings products to lifeRecently Patton has utilised a powerful 3D visualisation tool called KeyShot. The software is used for finalised product renders and animations for marketing, sales and customer approval. Keyshot allows Patton to show how new products will work through application and concept demonstration. KeyShot helps deliver initial concepts, but the real-time rendering helps the engineering team visualize the final product fast during the design process.

Patton also uses KeyShot in producing high resolution product imagery used in banners, the company website and social media outlets. This capability reduces the Patton’s reliance on expensive photography.

On Monday, November 24 Patton management and staff attended the annual Indian Newslink Indian Business Awards.

The gala black tie event was held at the Sky City Convention Centre attended by the Rt Hon John Key, members of parliament, members of the opposition, the Indian High Commissioner Mr Ravi Thapar, the Mayor of Auckland His Worship Len Brown and the who’s who of the thriving Indian business community.

Patton Limited was nominated in four categories namely: Business Excellence in Innovation, Business Excellence in Marketing, Best Large Business and Business Excellence in Export to India. Competition was fierce in all categories and the night ended well with Patton Limited winning the Business Excellence in Export to India award. Our proud CEO, Sameer Handa was at hand to receive the honor and took the opportunity to thank Indian Newslink Indian Business Awards and all Patton staff for making this award possible.

Patton Ltd manufactures and supplies commercial refrigeration equipment and was established in 1923 in Christchurch. The company now exports to a number of countries including India. Patton established on ground presence in India in 2007 by establishing an office in Delhi and now has 8 sales offices throughout India. Patton more than doubled its business in India during the last four years.

The Judges were very impressed with the way Patton is moving from a traditional export model to a modern international trade model. In the last 5 years from 2010 to 2014, they have more than doubled their business in India. They plan to double again in the next 3-4 years in India.

India is the world’s largest producer of milk and also the biggest producer of fruit and vegetables in the world. Unfortunately 30-40% of this produce gets wasted due to lack of proper refrigeration and storage facilities. Patton Ltd sees this as a huge opportunity to grow in this market as the demand for refrigeration accelerates.

RW Series Water Defrost Evaporator Tauranga Show

On Thursday 4th September Philip and I travelled to Tauranga Branch to showcase our new RW Series water defrost evaporator.

The design is based on the standard R Series which incorporates the blue coated coil with heat exchanger, white powder-coat-ed aluminium case, not to forget the popular EBM hyblade fan which provides excellent straight airflow. Adding water boxes with newly designed water distribution pipes and splash louvres, the water defrost model will be an energy efficient alternative to the conventional R Series models using heaters. It is available in 1 to 4 fans with capacities of 3-25KW.

Customers trickled in all day to see the new product and were instantly impressed with its white powder-coat finish. Their eyes lit up when the water was turned on, with an even distribution throughout the coil, and no water splashing over the louvres. The ones that hadn’t felt the air throw from the R Series fan were blown away when they felt it on this model. The feedback we received on the day was excellent, with quotes requested. A highly successful event. The RW Series is ready to order now!

- CAMERON WYNNIATT

- CAMERON WYNNIATT

On the afternoon of 20th of October, Ray and myself attended the AUT engineering project presentations in the

stunning new Sir Paul Reeves Building.

Final year mechanical engineering student, Joshua Lin, had conducted a project in conjunction with Patton on the optimization of the fan to coil distance on an evaporator. After an extensive review by Joshua, it was shown that optimum distance was close to what we already use, taking into account pressure drop and heat transfer.

Luckily, we both got taken on a tour of the engineering facilities, which have changed considerably since I studied there two years ago. First on the tour was the mechatronics lab, which mainly looked at the control systems of quad-cop-ters, then the new scanning electron microscope which is capable of up to 800,000x magnification! Last, was the 3D printing lab which has 2 special machines the laser sintering and laser melting, capable of 3D printing nylon, plastic and metal respectively - some of the produced shapes were very complex.

The quality of projects was high and we found them to be so interesting we run out of time to view them all. It was good to catch up with lecturers and past students, to tell them about Patton, what we do and the relevance of Joshua’s project. Hopefully next year another student will pick up where Joshua left off and study another part of the evaporator for optimisation.

“Messages from our customers

JohnstonSheryl

You’ ll be missedOne of the pillars in the success of Patton Christchurch has

retired after 32 years of contribution to Patton and the wider refrigeration community in the South Island.

As we celebrate Sheryl’s time with Patton, we look back on a career that started with the then manager, Stuart Smith, and has seen and experienced many changes since. Sheryl took great pride in the customer service skills that she developed over the years under the watchful eyes of our previous owners, Wayne Berry and Harvey Turner. She took huge pleasure in passing on her knowledge and helping a number of refrigeration engineers around the South Island.

February 2011 saw the Christchurch earthquakes. Sheryl rose from under the shelter of her desk to witness her car bouncing around in the carpark during an aftershock and then in the days immediately afterwards went out to help in the community. Her work colleagues admired her strength and courage in the following months as no matter how difficult circumstances were Sheryl continued to always be at work and maintain the highest standards of customer service.Happy retirement, Sheryl, and best wishes for the future from all of Patton staff.

Bowling“

Patton Auckland Social Club organised a bowling evening on 30th September at the Panmure Ten Pin bowling alley. We had a team of 20+ bowling in six lanes and although there was no winning team that night it was an evening full of fun and healthy competition.

Our Social Club has some great plans for 2015 and is looking forward to having new members join both the committee and Club to keep the ideas fresh and dynamic. It is planned to set an exciting calendar of social events in advance and lock in the dates so members are aware of what is coming up.

Stay tuned for more updates…. Until then happy holidays and have a great blast…

We see this as a great platform to bring people together, to be inclusive and to have a bit of fun and laughter outside of work.

FIJI

DAY& DIWALI

Join us for food & drinksin the downstairs lunchroom

@ 10 am, Wednesday 10th December.

At Patton Auckland there are 11 different cultures represented on the staff and at the beginning of 2014 it was decided to acknowledge and celebrate that diversity. Each month a different culture was invited to share food, decorations and a very short presentation with all their colleagues on the highlight of their cultural year so everyone could be better informed and enjoy the richness of our combined values.

On 10th December Diwali Day and Fiji Day were celebrated. Staff of Indian and Fiji ethnicities combined to decorate the room with lights and dressed in their traditional attire. A short video was shown explaining the significance of the day. As Diwali represents the triumph of light over darkness Sameer Handa lit the flame for the lighting ceremony and Nitesh Pillay cut the cake.

This was the final multi-cultural celebration of the year and there are exciting plans ahead for 2015. - UMESH THAKUR

Patton Thomastown Branch Refurbishment. August 2014

- ANDREW GALLIANO

Thomastown has been a key to the business structure of Patton Australia for some time. It was one of the original flagship branches, being the first in Victoria and opening approximately 10 years ago.

As well as being a retail branch Thomastown was also a manufacturing premise, mainly for condensing units, as well as other capital equipment. Through the years Thomastown has experienced many changes, the most recent being its evolution into a wholesale branch. Manufacturing is now consolidated in Sydney. Along with this, the branch has had the privilege of employing many different people from varying backgrounds to be a part of its staff.

The only thing that Thomastown lacked was a facelift to the showroom. But on 22nd August that all changed!

The shelving furniture and all products were cleared out to leave a clean space. The worn carpet was then removed and new commercial grade tiles installed.

The counter was repositioned and the customers’ sales work centre moved into a centralised location adding a new dimension to the counter. The shelving gondolas have been strategically placed giving the ability to display more stock while still having an open plan feel. New promotional material has been displayed on the walls.

The main part of this refurbishment was done in 2-3 days. All staff participated and enjoyed sharing in the fun and great jovial atmosphere. The result is a smart new branch feel and nothing but positive feedback from customers when coming in to buy.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Thomastown staff for helping out and also to John McCarrey and Jason Pearce for taking time away from their families to fly down and assist. I invite anyone coming to Melbourne to feel free to pop in and see what it looks like, as I don’t think the pictures attached to this story really do our showroom justice.

Box Hill TAFE DonationBack in May 2014 a representative from Box Hill TAFE approached

Patton Australia to see if we would be interested in supporting the opening of their brand new $41m, five green star-rated learning centre. After a short discussion on what would be involved Patton

agreed to help out with the project.

TAFE had manufactured a new learning concept by way of creating mobile pods, each with its unique application to our industry. These ranged from large capacity chillers to hospitality, CO2 pods and cool rooms etc.

In particular the pod that Patton was involved with incorporated two systems, one being low temp and the other medium temp. Patton supplied the condensing units and evaporators plus ancillaries to go with the equipment. These unique pods are designed to be completely mobile and accessible from all aspects for the students to utilise for learning their trade.

I attended the opening on Tuesday the 14th October at which there were representatives from every corner of our industry. Senator Scott Ryan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education, officially opened the building. Tours were taken through the new building to show off the state of the art facilities on offer to the students.

In return for Patton’s sponsorship, Box Hill has affixed our logo on the side of the pod we supplied equipment for, and this advertising will remain with the pod for its lifespan with the organisation.

Patton is very proud to be able to assist with the new era of talent coming through the ranks of our industry. We will continue to be a leading partner with the teaching

Patton India

In November Patton India participated in the RASS Society launch (Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Service Sector Society) at Ludhiana. This society will cater to the technical needs of all India technicians working in the field of HVAC&R by providing them

training. It was a very well organised event and the RASSS team has taken a much needed initiative to improve the quality of service in the industry. Improvement in service quality is “the need of the hour”. There could not be better time than this for a motivated team like RASSS to take this initiative up.

Patton India is committed to supply good quality HVAC&R products, components, tools, instruments and accessories of international brands and thereby become part of this initiative to improve quality of service. Patton India was silver sponsor for this one day show and space was allocated to display our products.

Mr. Anshu Kumar, a founder member of RASSS, emailed Mr. S Gagneja “It is an opportunity from my end to thank the Patton team for your sponsorship of the activity. I saw a lot of technicians busy on the Patton stall enquiring about good service tools. With your kind help we made this event a grand success.”

Patton India looks forward to participating in more shows like this.

Dixell and Patton hold Grand Opening Seminar and Dinner in Thailand

The 26th November was a milestone date in the calendar of Patton Thailand. It marked the seminar and gala dinner held to celebrate the partnership of Patton and Dixell Asia in Thailand.

The seminar was attended by 200 members of the Thai refrigeration industry where they were able to see Patton’s equipment on display and also listen to the presentations on the company history, product features, design and selection software. Also present were some of Patton’s new Philippine’s customers who were impressed by the Company’s new manufacturing facilities, products, processes and the occasion.

As the evening progressed, over 300 people attended the dinner function with all the Thai refrigeration companies senior management in attendance. The feedback was overwhelming and despite a poor year overall for the Thai refrigeration industry, it is quite clear that 2015 will be a very successful year for both the Thai refrigeration industry and the Patton Dixell partnership in Thailand.

As a result of these promotions and feedback from the industry, Dixell has forecast the purchase of 3000 CDU’s for 2015, with the first 600 to be produced for the Thai market within December/January.

Patton Trials Slimline Energy Saving Unit (CZBD) for Tesco Thailand

Patton’s relationship with Tesco Thailand and Tesco Worldwide has grown in 2015 to become the manufacturer of choice for their stores. Patton constantly works with Tesco’s technical team to refine and improve their systems to become the most efficient and reliable systems for their vast store network.

Recently Tesco engaged Patton to develop a highly efficient slimline, wall mountable unit for their Tesco Express format stores. Building on Patton’s success around ASEAN with Family Mart, Lawson and other convenience stores, Patton tested the CZBD model against the current Emerson CDU.

The result of the test was outstanding with a 37% energy saving being reported against the existing equipment. Another triumph for Patton’s Technical Department and the Thailand team.

As a result of this trial Tesco is securing a budget from their Energy Saving Department to immediately replace equipment in 300 stores with the procurement order expected shortly.
