WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS

Many of the opportunities we provide our students at PLPS

could not go ahead without the wonderful help from parents.

We often require parent helpers for school sporting events,

excursions, fundraising events and classroom programs.

If you wish to help out at PLPS, you will be required to

register your Working with Children Check (WWCC), by

choosing our school as a place you volunteer, on the WWCC

online site.

Please note there are no fees for a Volunteer WWCC.

CARRUM ESSAY COMPETITION

Carrum Essay Competition

I am delighted to let you know about my inaugural writing competition for students in Years 5 and 6 at primary schools in the State electorate of Carrum.

Entries should be around 200 words; must be the student’s original work and indicate the student’s school and year level.

Entries open on Monday 4 September 2017 and close on Thursday 21 September 2017 and can be submitted via email to [email protected] , or hand delivered to my office at 622 Nepean Highway, Carrum 3197 or submitted to school for collection by my office on Friday 22 September 2017.

A winning entry from each school will be selected, as well as an overall Competition winner. All school winners and the overall Competition winner will be announced by me in mid-October 2017. The Competition winner will receive a $200 cash award.

Having given considerable thought to the topic for the competition, we have decided on:

“What do you want other people to care about?”

My office will be in contact in early Term 3 to chat more about the competition and to see whether your school would like to take part. I really would love to see as many students as possible participate in the competition – the more the bet-ter!

Warmest regards

Sonya Kilkenny MP

State Member for Carrum

Thank you to those selected families that have completed the

ONLINE Parent Opinion Survey. It would be greatly

appreciated if the remaining selected families could complete

the ONLINE Survey as soon as possible.

The results will be used to inform and direct our future school

planning and improvement. Please take the time to complete

the survey, as your opinions are important to us and will

contribute to the future management and organisation of our

school.

SCHOOL FETE NEWS

School Fete Announcement

On behalf of the FFFA (Family, Friends and Fundraising

Association), we are pleased to announce the PLPS School

Fete is being held on Sunday October 22, 2017.

Class stalls have already been allocated & volunteers will be

required to help make the day a success. Some teachers are

still looking for parent class stall fete conveners to assist with

pre organisation and running the stalls on the day. If you are

interested in assisting with this, please have a discussion with

your class teacher.

Very soon, we will be calling for donations for some stalls via

FlexiBuzz. Any parents who own businesses and wish to

provide sponsorship or donate prizes for the major raffle can

contact Scott Dargan on 0420 909 449.

The ride ticket prices & purchasing information will be

available shortly and communicated to all families via the

newsletter and FlexiBuzz.

This is our major fundraising event for the year and the

proceeds from this year’s fete will go towards covering the

cost of a new sound system and portable stage for the school

hall.

Once again, assistance from the school community is not only

greatly appreciated, but also vital to ensuring a successful day

for the children, parents and wider community.

SCHOOL FETE - EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

Expressions of interest are sought for local small businesses

who are interested in setting up a display or market stall at this

year's school fete. There will be a payment required to

participate but this will depend on the type of stall required.

This is a fantastic opportunity for our local small businesses to

promote their services or products to the school community.

To those who are interested, could you please send an email

to Kylie Brady at [email protected]. You will need to

explain what you will be displaying/selling and if you have an

association with the school or the Patterson Lakes community.

All applications will be assessed by the fete committee for

suitability and will be limited in numbers due to the space

available.

SUN SMART POLICY

NO HAT/NO PLAY FROM FRIDAY

1ST SEPTEMBER 2017

Our school’s SunSmart Policy comes in to effect on Friday,

1st September for the remainder of the school year. In light

of the following SunSmart information, our school updated its

policy and students are required to wear their hats from the

1st September through until the 30th April.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the

world. More than 1700 people die from skin cancer every

year – that's more than the national road toll.

The SunSmart UV Alert is based on the UV Index forecast,

which predicts how much UV radiation will reach the ground

that day. The SunSmart UV Alert times are issued

throughout the year by the Bureau of Meteorology when the

UV Index is forecast to reach 3 or above.

The general rule of thumb for sun protection is as follows:

In Victoria, from September through to the end of April

average UV levels are 3 and above, which is when UV

radiation can damage skin and eyes and lead to skin cancer.

This is when sun protection is required.

From May to August the UV radiation levels are generally low

(1 or 2) in Victoria. Sun protection isn't needed unless you

are in alpine areas or near highly reflective surfaces such as

snow or water.

So when the UV Index is 3 and above:

1. Slip on sun-protective clothing

2. Slop on SPF30+, broad spectrum, water resistant

sunscreen – put it on 20 minutes before you go

outdoors and every two hours afterwards

3. Slap on a hat – that protects your face, head, neck

and ears

4. Seek shade

5. Slide on some sunglasses - make sure they meet

Australian Standards

PLPS HOSTS CSIRO – STEM IN SCHOOLS SPECIAL EVENT Last Friday, 18th August, our school hosted a special Australia wide National Science week event. The Hon Mark

Dreyfus MP (Federal), Sonya Kilkenny MP (State) and Dr Kathie McGregor's Research Group Leader, Innovative

Process Chemistry at CSIRO, chose our school to participate with students from our school in the live webinar

and then view some of our STEM activities. Seventeen students from Years 5 and 6 were chosen to participate in

the Virtual Classroom webinar with five distinguished CSIRO scientists. The panel shared their work on what

they are doing to investigate the tricky questions and how they can solve problems related to all things space -

think mission control, lasers, telescopes and space junk.

A recording of the virtual classroom is available at: https://vimeo.com/230383748/96b3bd367e. There were 380

schools across Australia joining in this webinar.

On the panel were : -

Dr Kimberley Clayfield: Executive Manager Space Sciences and Technology, CSIRO

Ms Solange Cunin: Co-Founder and CEO, Cuberider

Prof Paulo de Souza Junior: OCE Science Leader, Data61 | CSIRO

Assoc Prof Céline d’Orgeville: Instrument Scientist and Adaptive Optics Group Manager, ANU

Dr Jason Held: Founder and CEO, Saber Astronautics

Afterwards our visitors were treated to a demonstration from our schools RoboCup Junior winning robotics

team, 4D programming and coding with BeeBots each with Mrs. Bearup and 2D experimenting with wind power

crossing the chasm activity with Mr. Milgate. The politicians said that this visit to our school and seeing the

wonderful STEM: DigiTech and Science activities here was the highlight of their week. Dr McGregor was also

very impressed with our programs.

WEEK 29 – SOLVING PROBLEMS

Wellbeing Element – Engagement and Achievement

Character Strength – Wisdom

Cultivating in our students resourceful and reflective habits for a lifetime of learning in an ever changing world is a chal-

lenge that

all teachers face. With the amazing rate information is being created in the 21st century,” knowing stuff” learnt through

the 20th

century learning and teaching transfer of knowledge paradigm is no longer relevant. The world now needs good people

who

can think logically and ethically to solve problems.

Our learners now need to be able to:

• Experiment, imagine, visualise and question what is happening around them.

• Take stock of what is occurring and why.

• Use their intuition, logic, creative and critical thinking to solve problems.

• Make new connections from what they learn to extend their vision of the world.

• Find and authenticate the information they require.

True learning is the connecting and understanding of areas of knowledge and then being able to apply them to solve and

analyse a series of problems or situations. To enable this, students’ thinking needs to be continuously developed through

the

regular usage of Habits of Minds and Thinking Tools in all areas of their lives and learning.

An organised, resourceful and systematic approach to problem solving requires thinking to be visible for students; the steps

are clearly sign posted for them. The “off the top of the head” and “spontaneous” methods of problem solving, often end

up

without a logical solution, involve haphazard thinking processes and don’t thoroughly consider all possible angles.

The key components in solving any problem are very simple:

• Getting started the day the problem is received (a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step).

• Being prepared to brainstorm and to consider a number of options; moving from possible to probable and onto pre-

ferred.

• Always starting from a position of curiosity, not certainty. Curiosity leads to Clever, which leads to Certain; the 3 C’s to

problem solving.
