Pathfinder Message from Our Board President

O ver these past two years, we have seen

challenges and we have welcomed

opportunities. We have endured change, we

have smiled or cried together as families in our

community have faced celebration or a loss. Throughout

times of change over the past two years, one thing has

been constant. We have endured together as a community

in good times and when facing challenges.

I realized sitting on the bimah at our 50 year anniversary

Shabbat service on April 15 and listening to a historic

presentation about Temple Solel, that while things change,

one important thing does not. Temple Solel has been and

will continue to be an important spiritual home for our

families.

Yes, these last few months of my tenure as president of

Temple Solel have been a bit challenging. But in times of

challenge, the strength of character in our board, its

officers and our clergy has shined. Kudos and

congratulations to Robert Danoff, Scott Cohen, Sharon

Fixman Bricker and David Weissman for your years of

service to Solel. As you rotate off the board, go with

thanks from a grateful congregation. Welcome to Brian

Weinberger, Peter Pishko, Lauren Brown, Deena Goldstein

and Rebecca Goldberg and thanks for stepping up and

serving your congregation. And a sincere note of thanks to

Larry Fink who as Solel’s incoming president is about to

embark on a new and worthwhile journey promising to

bring our congregation steady and professional leadership

throughout his tenure. And lastly, a sincere thank you to

Rabbi Linder for your rabbinic stewardship. My family and I

have been blessed to be a part of this congregation thanks

in no small part to how you have touched our lives. It has

been a pleasure working with you these past two years.

Our congregation is a special place and I am confident that

it will continue to be a special place for at least the next

fifty years. Thank you from myself and my family for the

opportunity to serve as Solel President over the past two

years.

A Tree Grows in Solel

The purchase of a leaf on Temple Solel’s Tree of Life provides a special

way to commemorate a life-cycle event, while at the same time

providing needed funds for our children’s religious education. You

have probably noticed the inscribed leaves, each one reminding us of a

special Simchah or thought celebrated by a temple member or organization.

These leaves can be purchased for $180 each. All funds are used to

support various Temple Youth and Education Programs.

A leaf has been purchased:

Mateo and Case really enjoyed our “Blue Wednesday.” when some PVPD officers came to have lunch with us!

Maxen loves riding the plasma cars on the playground. Grace and Collins experiment with clothespins

and cotton balls, trying out a new painting technique.

The Solel kids enjoyed showing off their favorite costumes for Purim.

Our Director, Leslie Scheck and several teachers put on a Purim Play for all the kids

Sydney and Kennedy participated in the carnival games during the PreK trip to Kivel Campus of Care, our annual Purim field trip celebrating the mitzvah of honoring elders.

M ay is a busy month at The Solel Preschool. As we wind our school year down, we are also gearing up for the beginning of Camp Solel. We say goodbye to our Pre-K graduates and welcome a new group of kids who will be joining us for camp.

The end of the school year is a bittersweet time. Our teachers say goodbye to a group of students who have taken up residence in our hearts. We rejoice in how much

they have learned and grown. We are so proud of all they have accomplished. This year, we have loved them, cared for them, and started their educational journey on the right path. We send them on to their new teachers or new schools with so much love, knowing that they will do great things in this world.

Leslie Scheck Director of Early Childhood Education

The Solel Preschool has something new for our summer camp this year.

We will be offering camp for children ages infant through 3rd grade this summer! For the younger kids (3mo-5yrs) our KATAN camp’s theme will be “Around the World in 50 Days”

with lots of fun activities from various countries and continents from Brazil to Italy! We will have several special visitors throughout the summer, including Magician Matt Lemm, The Singing Cowboy Gary (with his horse Dusty) and The Fantastic Fire Department! For older children (entering

1st-3rd grades) our GADOL camp will offer different themed camps each week including Bricks for Kids, Sports, Cooking, “Mad Science” and Drama. We are even including several exciting field trips for our Gadol campers.

For more information and registration materials, please visit our website, www.solelpreschool.org or call 480.991.4545 and ask for me, Karen Aland, Camp Solel Director.

Preparing for Passover: Our students enjoyed a variety of pre-Passover activites including making chocolate matzah, designing Passover plates and attending the Temple Solel Women’s Seder.

Our religious school year draws to a close with a wrap up of the year’s learning and a focus on Israeli culture in some religious school classrooms for Yom Haatzmaut (Israeli Independence Day).

Fifth grade teachers Ariella Feld, Sharona Feld and Moshe Blenkitni, (all from Israel) incorporate singing prayers and learning traditional melodies into their class. In celebration

of Yom Haatzmaut they plan to enhance their regular studies by including a focus on Israeli dancing.

Sixth grade teachers, Kathy Shulman, Ruth Goldman and Jerry Flint have been teaching students about Israel’s people, places, food and popular music. They will culminate their study with a specially planned Israeli breakfast to include 6th grade parents on Sunday, May 1 from 11:00 am–12:00 pm.

One of my favorite characters in the Torah is Zipporah, daughter of the Midianites, a nomadic desert tribe. In my imagination, I see her as a priestess with an enchanted life. When she was born, her family named her “Zippor” (bird). They said that she was a descendant of the timeless bird who perched in the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:9). Like a guardian angel, this original bird kept her eye on all the creatures below, singing, “God gives wisdom through the birds of the sky” (Job 35:11).

I also imagine that when Zippor became a priestess, God added the divine letter hay to her name, rendering it “Zippor-ah, Bird of God.” God felt a special kinship with her because of their shared ability to fly. As the Bible relates, “Blessed is the Eternal, who walks upon the wings of the wind, beyond trees glistening with dew, where birds make their nests” (Psalm 104).

My musings about Zipporah stem from her appearance in the Torah as Moses’ wife and desert guardian. When the young Moses flees Pharaoh’s palace and runs into the desert, Zipporah finds him there and marries him (Exodus 2:11-22). Later, she saves him from an avenging angel (Exodus 4:24-26). Zipporah’s clan, the Midianites, help Moses because they share a common ancestor—Abraham. Midian was Abraham’s sixth son (Genesis 25:2). While the enslaved Israelites forgot the ways of justice and mercy that Abraham received from the Eternal, the Midianites retained that memory. With Zipporah’s blessing, they teach it to Moses, who records it in the Torah (Exodus 18:1-27). For us today, the Torah remains a fascinating text, engaging our imaginations and inspiring us to write stories of our own!

Torah study meets every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. in the temple library. Please come!

Gift Shop News

Return Policy The temple will cheerfully accept any returns for store credit only.

Thank You!

Just because Sunday School is over, doesn’t mean your Gift Shop is closed. We are opened for business all through the summer. Please let us know you’re coming as we would love to serve you for all your gift giving needs.

Weddings are still happening and we have beautiful gifts for the bride and groom. Babies are still being born, come see our lovely gift items. Keep us in mind and make the temple shop your shop.

We have many wonderful ideas, and before you know it, it will be time for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur...and we will have all those items for you as well. See you soon!
