She was born in Breckinridge County on Decem- ber 24, 1942, the daughter of the late Ed and Lillie Brown Critchelow. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the former owner/operator of Shorty’s Barbecue in Harned and the Bus Station in downtown Hardinsburg. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing Rook and reading. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry Ballman; a great-granddaughter Reese Coffey; a brother Franklin Critch- elow; and a sister Anna Lee Critchelow. Shorty is survived by four children: Kelly Ballman and his wife Wendy of McDaniels; Chris Ballman and his wife Juanita of Hudson; Mark Ballman and his wife Terri of Effingham, IL; Kimberly Compton and her husband Doug of Cecilia; eleven grandchildren: Hope Coffey; Ashley Burnett; Samantha, Mat- thew, Elizabeth, Kendall, Megan and Angela Ballman; Dalton, Lillie and Diana Compton; three great-grandchildren, Ryder and Reagan Coffey; and Emmary Burnett; and three sisters, Frances Spencer and Mary Ruth Henning of McDaniels; and Margaret Moorman of Louisville. Nancy Jo Maynard Smith 1930-2012 Nancy Jo Maynard Smith, age 81 of Hardinsburg, passed away Wednesday, March 14 at Breckinridge Memorial Nurs- ing Facility. She was born in Phelps on De- cember 31, 1930, the daughter of the late John W. and Kentucky Mae Charles May- nard. She retired in 1997 from the Pike County Board of Education as a Special Education instructor at Phelps Elementary and Mullins Elementary schools. She was adored by both her students and their par- ents for the care, patience and love she gave them. She was a friend and influence to many of her co-workers and they kept in touch with her after she moved to Hardinsburg. Nancy en- joyed oil painting, quilting, sewing and flower gardening and she was a Kentucky Education Association member. She was preceded in death by her husband Curtis L. Smith. Nancy is survived by two children Curtis M. Smith and his wife Nancy of Shawnee, OK; Sheila Frazier and her husband Joe of Webster; three grandchildren, Amanda Frazier Banker and her husband Zach of Beijing, China; Jennie S. Frazier of Paducah; and Stephen M. Frazier of Lexington; three broth- ers, Jim Maynard and his wife Ann of Derby, Kansas; Charles Maynard of St. Paul, Minnesota; Billy "Pete" Maynard and his wife Loraine of Dearborn Heights, Michigan; two sisters Wilena Knight and her husband Richard of Dearborn Heights, Michigan; and Pearl McCoy of Indianapolis, IN; and two cousins that were like sisters to Nancy, Gayle Sturgeon and Jeanne Blakenship of Hardinsburg. Funeral services were held on Friday, March 16 at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff with Rev. Frank Mc- Callum officiating. Chester Vernue Rogers 1932-2012 Chester Vernue Rogers, age 79, of Ow- ensboro, passed away Tuesday, March 13, at Owensboro Medical Health Sys- tem. He was born on June 9, 1932 in Breckinridge County to the late Chester and Nannie Belle Rogers. He retired from Dravo Bargeline as a River Boat Captain. Chester was a Veteran of the United States Army, where he was a paratrooper during the Korean War. During the Korean War there were only two paratrooper jumps into North Korea and Chester jumped both times. He is a member the VFW Post 696. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Austin Franklin Rogers and a sister, Ola Mae Rogers. Mr. Rogers is survived by his wife of 58 years, Peggy Rog- ers; a daughter Glenda Doris Welsh of Murray; a son Steven Louis Rogers and wife, Pam of Grayson, GA; four grandchil- dren, Alicia Margaret Welsh, Kristy Michelle Nance, Chance Vernue Rogers, Dalton Steven Rogers; a sister JoAnn Hall of Cloverport; a brother-in-law Darrell Bruner and wife, Sandy of Hawesville and four nephews. He was a member of the Methodist faith, a retired truck driver, an Army veteran, Kentucky Colonel and enjoyed collecting, wood carv- ing and leathercraft. He was preceded in death by his sister Beverly. Mr. Dowell is survived by his wife Rosa Stillwell Dowell of Cloverport; two daughters Brenda Lou Davis and her husband Jim of Prospect; and Jennifer Rose Dowell of Cloverport; his stepmother Carrie Laslie Dowell of Florida; two grandchildren Jacob Allen Nugent and Noah Holland; two step-grandchil- dren Christian and Preston Davis; four half sisters, Ann Felts and Joyce Basham of Hardinsburg; Judy Cain of Florida; and Melvina Dowell of Owensboro; nieces, nephews, and numer- ous foster children throughout the years. She was born in Hardinsburg, on July 16, 1920, the daughter of the late James and Nellie Beatty Mattingly. She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, quilting, dancing and spending time with her family. Isabell was a member of St. Romuald Catholic Church, past member of the Altar Society at St. Rose and St. Ro- muald, past president of the Mattingly and Breckinridge Coun- ty Homemakers. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years Charles "Germie" Winchell on February 14, 2014. Edna “Shorty” Critchelow Ballman1942-2012

Edna “Shorty” Critchelow Ballman, age 69 of Hardinsburg, passed away Wednes-day, March 14 at her residence. She was born in Breckinridge County on Decem-ber 24, 1942, the daughter of the late Ed and Lillie Brown Critchelow. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the former owner/operator of Shorty’s Barbecue in Harned and the Bus Station in downtown Hardinsburg. 1932-2012Chester Vernue Rogers, age 79, of Ow-
