“Musick’s work has the power to move us, even in these world weary fi n de siecle times. Within each of her refi ned constructions, the viewer fi nds the artist using all the tools at her disposal to create a sublime recipe…culture and nature, man and the earth, forever and inextricably linked…for extraordinary beauty.”
— Don Bacigalupi, PhDDirector of the Toledo Museum of Art
“In all of these works Pat Musick poses universal questions in contemporary visual language. Restating Romeo’s plea:
But he that haththe steerage of my course,Direct my sail.
The quest for reality and destiny is, perhaps as it should be, in the hands of the artist.”
— Townsend Wolfe, Director and Chief CuratorArkansas Art Center (retired)
“Drawing as they do on the history of art, the hidden-stream of women’s art and of her childhood environment, and keen observation, these initially jarring, ultimately lovely works are a systematic exploration of a universal theme of art: to paraphrase Gaugin, Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going? As such, they take an important place in this collection and in the scope of Pat Musick’s work.”
— Ellen A. PlummerExecutive Director, Arkansas Art Center
“I look for universal expression... the collective unconscious. That is, those ideas that are the same or similar over time, distance, cultures. There is no new thing under the sun.”

ONE ARTIST’S CHOSEN JOURNEY
PAT MUSICK
This book contributes to an understanding of the creative processes of one artist, PAT MUSICK, over a 40 year period. Essays and photographs document her drawings, paintings and sculpture as she moves from two to three dimensional considerations. Musick, whose work is in the permanent collections of 48 museums and public spaces in the United States has an MA and PhD from Cornell University, has taught at the University level, and written three books. Her work has progressed from an expressionistic, fi gurative style to abstract. The current work of wood, steel and stone refl ects harmony and peace in the environment.
