My initial contact with this song was at Christian Hills Camp in Eureka, Kansas. One evening there, my soul was moved as we sang “You Are My All in All” around a campfire. It is a life-changing testimonial addressed to Christ: “You are my strength when I am weak. You are the treasure that I seek. You are my all in all. Seeking You as a precious jewel, Lord, to give up I’d be a fool. You are my all in all… Taking my sin, my cross, my shame; Rising again, I bless Your name. You are my all in all. When I fall down, You pick me up. When I am dry, You fill my cup. You are my all in all. Jesus, Lamb of God; worthy is Your name. Jesus, Lamb of God; worthy is Your name.”

A highly similar sentiment is expressed in a well-known hymn composed by Russell Kelso Carter.

He was a “Renaissance Man”—pursuing a remarkably wide range of vocations over his lifetime. Carter was an athlete, a sheep rancher, a chemistry professor, an author, a composer, an ordained Methodist minister, a

O ne of the precious beauties of this life is that there are discoveries which we have yet to

discover and lessons which we have yet to learn! This truth need not be a source of frustration. Instead, this can provide joyful fascination for you and me. Further discovery and learning await us!

Consider the astounding variety of ways that people can express God’s love. Never will humankind exhaust them all. This is exciting! It means that new possibilities will be out there— forever. Fascinating!

In worship here at Ivy Chapel UCC on the final Sunday of June, our Friends and Family Choir sang, “You Are My All in All.” It’s a powerful song which I personally did not encounter until “later in life!”

who we are. Loving stems from who God is. Call on God to guide you, and then simply offer love. You won’t run short. God’s love never runs out.

Day by day, give this a try. Love as God loves - completely!

Join me in offering God this prayer: Jesus, Lamb of God, Unselfish Savior; help me to make you my all in all. Continue revealing ways that I faithfully may offer your love. Amen.

May Jesus Christ be the treasure that you seek, Pastor Dan

physician, and more!

God’s Word in Second Corinthians 1:20—“For in [Christ] every one of God’s promises is a ‘Yes.’ For this reason, it is through [Christ] that we say the ‘Amen,’ to the glory of God.”—inspired Carter in 1891 to compose “Standing on the Promises.” This classic opens:

Standing on the promises of Christ my King, Through eternal ages let His praises ring; Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing, Standing on the promises of God. Standing, standing, standing on the promises of God

my Savior; Standing, standing, I’m standing on the promises of

God.

The hymn’s concluding verse proclaims: Standing on the promises I cannot fall, List’ning every moment to the Spirit’s call, Resting in my Savior as my all in all, Standing on the promises of God…

Ah, how true! Relying on God’s promises gives us strength.

“A River Runs Through It and Other Stories” (1976) is the title of a semi-autobiographical novel written by Norman Maclean. It is the story of a 19th century Presbyterian minister, Rev. Maclean, and his family. In 1992, a film based on the novel was released. This masterful film is punctuated with poetic wisdom from start to finish. There are gems to be found from its opening lines (“In our family, there was no clear line between religion and fly fishing.”) to its closing lines. (“Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of those rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters.”)

A scene near the end of the film “A River Runs Through It” depicts part of a church service. It is a flashback in which Norman recalls his father, Rev. Maclean, leading worship and preaching, “…we can completely love without complete understanding.”

What a line! Surely, this is God’s truth—a faithful expression of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the core of all that Christ teaches: Love completely.

Yes, you and I can love completely. And it is this which our Savior calls all people to do.

Love completely. You can. It’s not a matter of being “with it” enough, “wealthy” enough, “smart” enough, “good” enough, or anything else. After all, it is not about

Share your faith. Spread God's Word. Show what it means to be Jesus' disciple.

Get to know a child. Learn more. Love more. Be more!

Be a Sunday School teacher! Would you like to be a Sunday School Teacher? Our Ivy Chapel UCC Sunday School teachers and Nursery workers each take one Sunday each month (or more if you’d like!) to prepare a lesson and share God's word and God's love with our children. See Erin Winship, Sunday School Superintendent, if you’d like to teach and she’ll get you scheduled with a week/class. This is a wonderful and rewarding way to share your faith with our young people. Classes available are for Nursery age, our new Preschool class for ages 2 – 5, our Multi-Age classroom for grades K through 6 and our 7th – 12th grade class.

And join us for:

Teacher Training/Sunday School Kick-Off Luncheon – August 25 Following worship on Sunday, August 25, please plan to join us for a short teacher

youngest children to the love of God and the stories of God’s people.

We will take a short time to visit in Fellowship Hall, then we'll meet downstairs in Room One for lunch and discussion. If you have anything you'd like to share with

the group such as teaching ideas or things that have worked particularly well for

you, please feel free to share them with us at that time.

Please let Erin Winship know if you will be able to attend so that we can plan

lunch.

Summer has officially flown by, and here it is almost back to school! So many things to talk about, but I figure I should start with our big news! Aaron and I are officially pregnant. That's right, we are adding to the number of babies expected this winter. Our official due date is January 28th. Providing a normal, uneventful pregnancy, I am planning on working right up until delivery and returning as soon as possible. I may not be able to utilize the pedals on the organ in the last month of pregnancy or the first couple weeks after delivery. Please join us in praying for a healthy, unexciting pregnancy and a safe delivery.

Now, we have several opportunities for joining the musical portion of worship this month! We will be having Friends and Family Choir on August 11th. Please join us in singing our praises while filling the choir loft. August 18th, I am inviting all youth to join us in playing and singing during Rally Day! Please check your email or see me for my info! Finally, CALLING ALL LADIES!!! We have a ladies choir performance on August 25th. We will rehearse at our first choir rehearsal on August 21st. You do not need to be a member of the choir to join us. If you cannot make rehearsal, see me any Sunday after church.

Finally, as mentioned in the previous paragraph, choir is resuming this MONTH. Our first rehearsal is August 21st. Our official first Sunday will be September 8th. If you are considering joining the choir, please do! We would love to have new faces. I have heard several of you sing, and I would love to have you. See me or any choir member with any questions.

Until Next Time... Anna-

The Mary and Martha Women's Group enjoyed a Slide Show by Randy Whitman showing us the Holy Lands beginning with Jesus' Bethlehem birthplace through locations of His ministry and to Jerusalem and His Crucifixion. She read short scriptures that related to these locations. She brought many items she had purchased there, some of olive wood and local stone, and Lee Headrick brought some items from her trip there. Randy brought snapshot albums with additional pictures. Randy is the wife of UCC Conference Minister, Jeff Whitman who has preached some sermons at Ivy. Thank you, Randy.

We planned a Dessert for a Dollar Fund Raiser for August 11th during Fellowship Hour. We will have individual plates of dessert for $1.00 which will serve about 2 people. These small desserts make a great Sunday Night Dessert, a Snack, a Neighbor Gift, something to put in a College Care Package, etc. The

Ivy Chapel UCC was transformed into a Medieval castle, complete with towers, banquet table and a drawbridge! During the week we had 28 children (from the Nursery group to 5th grade) involved, as well as a

host of volunteers! Each started day in the Queen's Choir Chamber for Sing and Play Rock, where we heard the day's Bible Point, found a clue about the Bible story of the day, and did some singing and dancing. Then it was off to our stations-Imagination Station, Queen's Choir Chamber,

Tournament Games, Epic Bible Adventures, Chadder's Theater and Snacks. Our church was filled with music, skits, laughter, friends and excitement while we learned about how we can "Stand Strong" with God! God's love helps us "Stand Strong"! Family and Friends help us "Stand Strong"! Prayer helps us "Stand Strong"! Trusting God helps us "Stand Strong"! The Bible helps us "Stand Strong"! We had two opportunities of giving during our week at Kingdom Rock. We collected school supplies for Joint Neighborhood Ministries and Circle

of Concern. We also collected money to help sponsor our student, Gerardo, at Instituto El Rey in Honduras. If you would like to contribute either school supplies or money to help Gerardo attend school, it would be much appreciated! Thanks to everyone who helped make our Ivy Chapel UCC 2013 Vacation Bible School such an EPIC ADVENTURE!!!

Love, Erin Winship & Linda Lowry, Kingdom Rock Co-Directors

GENERAL SYNOD 29 RECAP

Being a delegate for the Missouri Mid-South Conference was an honor. The whole Synod experience was wonderful. I recommend everyone to attend a Synod meeting…you don’t have to be a delegate…visitors are welcome and will also be inspired. As a matter of fact, there were about 800 delegates from the 38 Conferences and more than 2000 visitors for a total of about 3000 UCC members. Imagine a worship service with 3000 people! And not just a one hour service like on a Sunday morning. There were liturgical dancers, Mimes, Choirs, Musical groups, Youth of all ages in addition to Pastors and lay speakers all with stories relating to the theme God’s Vision: _________. That blank was filled with many words and thoughts: Loving, Giving, Forgiving, Strength, Grace, Caring, Blessing, Hope, and Light, just to name a few.

In addition to enlightening worship there is the actual business of the Synod. Resolutions submitted by Conferences are discussed in committees and then brought to the floor for delegates to vote upon. These resolutions are related to various topics and interests to establish suggested policy for all members of the United Church of Christ; but, since our denomination respects the right of each individual congregation to be autonomous, we are all merely urged to live our lives following Christ’s example.

General Synod is about meeting new friends, reconnecting with old friends, and reveling in the joy of what it means to be a member of the United Church of Christ. During the meetings and in response to some of the resolutions we received tweets from Washington, D.C. and even Desmond Tutu. I invite you to visit the website ucc.org and check out the videos from General Synod. Almost the entire six days was recorded. I will be glad to answer any questions. Just catch me on a Sunday morning or give me a call.

Donations above the cost of the Dessert are welcome. We can also use some additional pastry chefs. Small plates and plastic bags are available on Sunday mornings from Kay Kreder. The bakery goods will be packaged at home and brought Sunday morning before Worship on August 11th.

We will have Executive Director, Joan Hensley from Joint Neighborhood Ministries for our August 20th Meeting at Ivy Chapel. The trustees had a representative from the Church Asset Management group visit our last trustee meeting to give us an overview of the Church's insurance coverage. Matt Pahde spent over an hour answering our questions and detailing what is covered and to what extent. This valuable information gives the trustees insight in how we, the members, use the facility, how we could be impacted under certain losses and how we are also protected when other groups or guests are present. Members and the church are also protected when on mission trips or otherwise conducting outreach activities.

In addition to the insurance review Ralph Weiland has agreed to contact Matt regarding a hazard management survey. Matt will guide Ralph and additional trustees through the extensive questions needed to complete the study of how we has a church function and what we can do to prevent hazards and unnecessary risks. The process should take about 90 minutes to complete. Completing the survey has the potential to save Ivy a few hundred dollars in premiums. Win. Win.

Of course, the money saved can be used to purchase more gas so that the grass cutting can continue on a regular basis. Many thanks to G. Lindhorst for his tremendous amount of hours spent working at Ivy. Also, a gracious thank you to Tom Glenn for filling in occasionally on the "Ivy" tractor cutting grass. Could that tractor be one of Ivy's original insured assets?

Finally, the trustees appreciate all the hard work that members take upon themselves to make Ivy Chapel a better looking church property every year. Many members and staff too will take time to complete certain tasks helping us all. The trustees really do know about every square inch of "Ivy" and we notice when certain things get accomplished, we can't always address every inch at a moments notice so the extra help is a blessing to all of us.

WHERE ? WHAT ?

?WHERE was Moses told to go so he could view the land of Canaan? ?WHAT town, less than two miles from Jerusalem, did Jesus travel to in order to visit the bereaved sisters Mary and Martha? Bethany, John 11:1 "Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha."

COMMUNITY STEWARDSHIP

THROUGH JOINT NEIGHBORHOOD MINISTRIES

For a small ministry (nonprofit) they serve the community in a big way with a variety of services, staying true to their motto, "More Than A Soup Can."

Through your monetary contributions and material donations they can support the low-income community with food, clothing, financial assistance, health needs and services striving for self-sufficiency. The Family Advocacy program provides assistance of emergency financial needs and some transportation for certain events in a persons life. During certain times of the year a person or family may need a fan or an extra blanket or the children may need school supplies and winter outer wear. JNM's volunteers will even provide food delivery to the elderly, homebound and disabled.

JNM could always use volunteers. For more information see http://www.jnministry.org/, call 314-771-3987, or visit them at 2911 McNair, St. Louis, MO
