TRANSCRIPT
Dan Wilson, Pastor [email protected]
It may appear that a word was inadvertently left off the above heading. As soon as Christmas Day arrives, our focus promptly shifts from the arrival of Christ’s birthday to the arrival of a new calendar year.
Oh, there’s our missing word! Year. The full expression is: Happy New Year!
Actually, I left the third word off on purpose. You see, I’ve been thinking; and one thought that has come to me is: Faith in God leads to “newness.” This is true, not only for Christian faith, but for all faiths which center upon living in relationship with God. Faith in God always leads to “newness.”
The Christian tradition celebrates God’s Prophet Isaiah who reveals God is perpetually announcing, “I am about to do a new thing.” (Isaiah 43:19)
The Christian tradition seeks to emulate the Son of God who teaches, “I give you a new commandment,… love one another… as I have loved you.” (John 13:35)
The Christian tradition worships Christ the Savior who proclaims, “Behold, I make all things new.” (Revelation 1:5)
So, to everyone aspiring to faith in God… “Happy new!”
Friends in Christ, God’s world is poised to begin a new year. What will take place in 2018? We know not. Sure, there are certain events which we can anticipate. Yet we do not know entirely what will happen throughout the coming year. This is the way God configures it. We cannot know everything in advance.
What we can claim is that God Eternal will continue doing and creating in 2018. God will continue doing new things and making things new!
What about specifics? As we’ve noted already, we may become aware of some ahead of time. However, we will not know all of the specifics before they occur.
Some people are frustrated by this. After all, you and I are incessantly being told that we’re living in the dynamic crucible of Technology! These are grand times in the “Scientific Age of Information.” The default, smug, third millennium mentality states, “We have the know-how. Science is king!”
Sounds sort of like the mantra of the 1970’s TV series The Six-Million Dollar Man - “… we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to make the world's first bionic man. Steve Austin will be that man. Better than he was before. Better. Stronger. Faster."
Technology is god.
Errrrrr,… except not for the Church.
The Supreme Power in the Church is God. For the Christian faith community, God is above all, and this includes the formidable power of technology.
Faith in God invites believers not to be fearful, not to be dismayed. We are called on to display sight unseen trust in God. And we can live this way. Together then,

I am grateful to God for allowing me to be part of this loving Ivy Chapel UCC faith community. Please accept my thanks for your many expressions of kindness throughout the year, including the sincerely appreciated Special Christmas Gift which you gave me. It is a privilege serving God as your pastor. With gratitude, Pastor Dan

Care Corps is an Opportunity to Help If you have never needed the services of Care Corps you might not know what it is, other than a listing in The Ivy Vine and KYP. Each month two people volunteer to be on call to support Ivy Chapel members and friends who have had surgery, a serious illness or welcomed a new baby to the family. The support can be a meal, help at home, or a phone call or card. Some months are very busy and other months are (thankfully) kind of quiet. Care Corps volunteers always have a partner and the time demands are not great. Tip: meals do not have to be homemade if you are not a cook. If you would like to be a part of care corps, contact Nancy Marston (314-878-1317 or [email protected])
let’s lean our full weight into trusting this world’s Gracious Redeemer God.
Soon we will embark on a new calendar year. May we traverse this 2018 journey exhilarated by the “not-yet-known,” new works which God Eternal is about to do!
Be open to future beauties of God astonishing us all.
Happy new! Pastor Dan
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.”
John 1:5, NRSV (from the earliest Christmas Eve Gospel)
There is a high wind and the high seas are raging. The storm nears and we fear the eye of the storm. The night thickens and the stars fade away. Watchers sent from Heaven, pray what news you bring?
Though the storms rise they cannot flood the world. Though the night grows heavy with the dark it cannot quench the light, for the torch flames again in the wind and its rays pierce the darkness. It is the torch beside the cradle and the Child.

LASER TAG – January 7
LASER TAG FOR 4th – 12th grade/COLLEGE YOUTH When the Ark/Alpha-Omega youth planned our activities for the year we made sure to schedule it so that we can include our college youth friends! We know you LOVE laser tag and you’re home from College – so JOIN US! This is one of the favorite activities of our older youth. Parents are welcome as well. Following worship on Sunday, January 7, we will gather and go to lunch, then on to play Laser Tag. Watch your e-mail and the Sunday IYIA page for more information. And college youth – Tara will be contacting you with details.
ATTENTION YOUTH GRADES 7 - 12: ANNUAL MEETING CATERING – JANUARY 28 As is our tradition, the Sr. High Youth will be catering Ivy Chapel’s Annual Meeting luncheon on Sunday, January 28. We need ALL of the Ark & Alpha-Omega youth (and parents) to help make this event a success. Would a parent like to coordinate this? There is a file of all of the information from past years’ luncheons. Just let Linda Lowry know if you would like to coordinate. Watch the Sunday bulletin and your e-mail for more information.
CHRISTMAS PAGEANT “THANK YOU”! To everyone who participated in our Children’s Christmas Pageant, “The Christmas Lizard” on Dec. 17:
The pageant was amazingly wonderful. Thank you all so much for your participation! From our narrators, our “child”, Oscar the lizard, to the littlest angels (& fairy), nutcracker, elves, keepsake and the Angel of the Lord, to our wise man, shepherd, Mary & Joseph, their wise old donkey, everyone worked so hard to make the pageant a special part of our Advent worship experience! And thanks to all of you who helped lead parts of worship! Also, thank you to those who provided our special music. We enjoyed so many special musical offerings! All of the children did a great job, and were so enthusiastic. What a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas, by sharing the story of Jesus’ birth in a new way with our congregation. I heard many of you sharing your appreciation with our children. They enjoy the support of their Ivy Chapel family.
A special “Thank You” to Tara Lowry who adapted Cory Edwards’ book and wrote the pageant script this year. She also made the props, cast parts and directed. Such a help to me! It was written with our children and our congregation in mind, as we told the story of Jesus birth, the true reason we celebrate Christmas. Thanks again to all of you. I am always so proud of how you all come together for this special worship. Love, Mrs. Lowry
COLLEGE CARE PACKAGES Thank you to everyone who donated items for our College Care Packages. We had a great response and so many different types of donations. Our younger youth made bags for each of our college youth during our all youth Christmas party on December 11. The bags were placed under the tree in Fellowship Hall for our college youth to pick up when they were home on their break. Over the years I have heard from so many of our college kids how much they love getting these packages. They love going through and seeing all of the goodies that the congregation has provided. They can take a little bit of Ivy Chapel with them when they return to college. And our younger youth are looking forward to benefiting from this tradition in the future! This is a great way for our congregation to reach out to those of our members who are away at college and remind them that they are in the thoughts of their Ivy Chapel UCC family.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS - CONFERENCE YOUTH EVENT – 2018
February 17 - 19 at Camp MoVal For more information see Flyer on the Youth Bulletin Board.
Contact Linda Lowry if you are interested. Adults needed.
February 17th
Please save the date – and share it with friends, neighbors and family! We also will need lots of volunteers to help on February 17th to set up, cook, serve and clean up. Sign-up sheets for those jobs will be in the Narthex. Call Janet Wilking (314-5640-0643) or Bruce Wilking (314-640-4902) with any questions.
More Ways to Help with the Dinner: Donate Raffle Items
This year there is going to be a raffle at the Chili Dinner. The committee would like to have about 10 items, donated by the congregation. A few examples might be Dierbergs, Schnucks or other gift cards, restaurant gift cards, homemade gift baskets, gift certificates for yard work, etc.
Bring in Chili Ingredients for Decorations
The Chili Dinner committee is asking for donations of cans of chili, beans, or tomato sauce as well bags of dry beans or crackers. These will be placed on the tables for decorations. After the February 17th dinner, they will be donated to the Circle of Concern. Please bring them to church in the coming weeks and place them in the box in the narthex.
It’s Not Dinner without Dessert… We are also planning to serve homemade brownies and pies as dessert at the dinner on February 17th. We need 14 batches of brownies, 9 x 13 pans. The brownies and pies need to be brought to church on Friday, February 16th. We are asking that the brownies be uncut, so they will stay fresher and can be cut uniformly. No icing please! Look for the sign-up sheets in the Narthex. Sign up and share your favorite recipe.
And finally… If you know of any way to help us offset any of the costs of food or supplies, please contact Bruce (314-640-4902) or Janet (314-5640-0643) .

Hard to believe 2017 is over. It’s true what they say. Once you have kids, time seems to move at warped speed or maybe its just being an adult. It feels like it was just starting; however, here we are, the beginning of a new year. This past year was a rough one for the DiVestas. I realize that our problems may seem minute in comparison to bigger problems, but they are still stressful. We just could not catch a lucky break, but we still have so much to be thankful for which is where you all come in.
Thank you so much for your generosity this year in providing myself (and my family) with a Christmas gift. Truthfully, it will probably go directly into savings to help pay my taxes this year, but it is something that is so direly needed since we kept running into issues that required us to dip into savings. I am also so thankful to get to work in such an awesome place with truly wonderful people and coworkers. I am incredibly grateful for all the choir members for the tireless dedication to the music ministry at Ivy Chapel. I owe a tremendous debt to all those who offer their talents to the music ministry every week including those who play instruments, sing and offer their talents in so many other ways. I am fortunate to see kiddos everyday in my piano studio who bring me so much joy. I am so thankful for their parents for entrusting me with their musical education. It is no small task, and I am blessed to be the person they chose. And, as always, I am thankful for my family. I am so blessed to be their mom, and just like my students, I am so grateful that my heavenly Father chose me to be their mom. Some days, I am better mother than others, but my only hope is that when my children look back on their childhood they realize how much I love them. Again, just like my our God loves us. So with that, Thank you, thank you thank you. All of you are so important in my life and my family's lives. And now, we rest. Enjoy the rest of your holiday, and bring on 2018!
Lots of love from my family to yours this holiday season. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Until next time...

As you are aware, JNM (Joint Neighborhood Ministries) closed in May 2017. Several Ivy Chapel members and friends volunteered to deliver our donated goods and serve there (They still take a limited amount of clothing.)
In the October newsletter, we told you about Isaiah 58 Ministries and, after much research, Christian Action also decided to also serve Ritenour Co-Care Food Pantry. Now we support Ritenour and Isaiah 58 along with Circle of Concern, which are all worthy and needy.
Starting in a janitor’s closet of Overland Presbyterian Church, Ritenour Co-Care ( www.ritenourcocare.org ) became a community pantry just this past year, working not only with churches but also several area police departments, and a social worker. They also have a small book store now. Donations of feminine hygiene items, other personal care items, laundry detergent, soup, canned meat, cereal, canned fruit, peanut butter are always needed. Your monetary contributions help pay for the rent and utilities of the facility. They are fortunate to have facilities that allow them to accept fresh and frozen produce and meat.
Ivy Chapel‘s donation shelves in the coat room are well marked. So it is your choice to whom you wish to donate. • The (first) top shelf: Circle of Concern‡ (list of needed
items posted) • Second shelf: Ritenour Co-Care‡ • Bottom two shelves: Isaiah 58 Ministries (meal of the
month shopping list posted) Thank you for participating in helping to support those in need. ‡We also have bags for donations of footwear, in the
coat room, that go to Shoeman Water Project.
A big thank you to Ivy Chapel for contributing to the building of the UCC Habitat House. Work on the real house has begun with our work date some time in the spring. Please let Marsha Ramey know if you would like more information at [email protected].
Collection of contributions for the Isaiah 58 Ministries and Every Child’s Hope Christmas stores began in November with materials dropped off at the end of the
month so that the organizations could prepare for the holiday shopping of their families. The Mitten Tree once again was filled with mittens, gloves and hats to be distributed to various agencies in the area.

The Trustees ended 2017 with the pre-hanging of the greens, orchestrating the Church holiday decorating. The nice weather lent to hanging lights outside, as well, the grinding and mulching of leaves in the front yard grass areas.
Missouri American Water Company visited and told us we were due for a new water meter. Unlike your house, our water meter is located in a manhole, underground in the front grass area between our main sign and the flag pole. Over the years, the manhole accumulated a large quantity of dirt and mud so the Trustees dug out and removed the debris in order to fully expose the meter, pipes and valves. This enabled a successful meter installation and avoided a significant charge to Ivy Chapel.
We look forward to seeing you at the January All Boards Meeting and the fresh start of the New Year. When? What?
are the 12 Days of Christmas?
Despite the promotions and activity of our culture, the Christian “Christmas Season” begins on Christmas Day, rather than during the time leading up to Christmas. The 12 Days of Christmas are the days of the Christmas Season. These are the days between the Nativity of our Lord (December 25) and the Epiphany of our Lord (January 6). One tradition is that the 12 Days of Christmas start on Christmas Day, and conclude on January 5—“Twelfth Night”. Another tradition is that the 12 Days of Christmas begin on December 26, and run through January 6th. “Twelfth Night” would then be January 6.
Is The Epiphany of our Lord—January 6
‘The People who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them light has shined.’ Isaiah 9:2
The Epiphany of our Lord is mostly known as the arrival of the Magi bringing their gifts to Jesus. However, when we celebrate the Epiphany we are celebrating the spreading of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Epiphany is the manifestation or showing of Jesus to the world. The Magi were non-Jewish foreigners coming to worship Him, and represent who would eventually learn and benefit from His birth, ministry, death and resurrection. This visit, from Matthew chapter 2, foreshadows the Great Commission, in Matthew 28:16-20, make disciples of all nations, not just of the Jews.
Paraphrased from Pastor David Tinker, Martin Luther Lutheran Church. Carmine, TX https://mllccarmine.com/2014/12/13/the-12-days-of-christmas-and-then-epiphany/
Food pantry donations: There are now three different shelves labeled in the coat room for donations to Circle of Concern (serving West County families), Isaiah 58 (serving people in the Grand Avenue/Tower Grove area), and Ritenour Co-Care (serving families in north county) All of these agencies also get donations from the St. Louis Food Bank and other sources, but our collections are also greatly appreciated. Take a look at the food suggestion lists. In January our special collection for all three agencies will be peanut butter (smaller jars) and toilet paper! Thanks, Marsha Ramey
