Reformation(s)
This year we celebrate the 500th year anniversary of Reformation. On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther
would post 95 points of debate he had with the Church, which lead to the Reformation of the various
Protestant Churches. This class will look at why the reformation happened and the various expressions it
took throughout Europe.
Grace and Peace to you all,
What a wonderful and full month we had in January 2017 at Zion! It was wonderful to host the Chamber Orchestra and see the sanctuary filled with people enjoying the music and hospitality. Thanks to so many that worked diligently to make this event happen. I have met many people here in Stockton that know of our community due to this event and our efforts.
I have begun to spend time getting to know community and religious leaders in Stockton and Lodi. I look forward to building our association and working with St. Paul’s Lutheran, St. Ann’s Episcopal, the Chapel at UOP, First Presbyterian, and other worshiping communities in the area in our effort to live the gospel in and for Stockton.
As we continue to live into this season of Christ’s revealing I encourage you to think about what it means for those of us baptized into his life to follow in his way as dis-ciples. I encourage those of you who have not been to our Sunday morning adult education or our Wednesday night worship to consider joining us.
I also want to mention that starting in the Lenten season the Wednesday night ser-vice will transition to be a traditional vesper (evening prayer) service and our adult education time will be looking at the Lord’s Prayer.
Peace,
Pastor Ryan

From Music Director
On Sunday January 8, 2017, Pastor Ryan Eikenbary was officially installed as our pastor! If you have never visited our church or haven't been in awhile, we invite you to come and meet our new pastor.
As we are going to press right now we're in the full swing of our Zion Chamber Orchestral Series which I hope many of you are attending! The turn out for the first concert was wonderful, and the music has been sublime. As many of you know; in the second concert my composition; "Fandango do Ribateja" is going to be performed and I'm looking forward to that with great anticipation. I've been interested in a long time in the music of Iberia (Spain and Portugal), and my "Romancero Gitano" song cycle for soprano and guitar was the recipient of an ASCAP+ grant. It is a joy to be working on orchestral music again and also a pleasure to have both my composition and our chamber festival mentioned in our local paper by Joy Neas, special to the Record: "Rhondda Nunes, Zion’s music director, wrote one of the original compositions that will be performed on January 22. She told me that after stripping away the jazzy, bluesy music she usually plays she got into her Iberian (Spanish, Portuguese) roots. Her new orchestral piece is an intersection between Iberian and Middle Eastern music performed with a percussionist playing the palmista (flamenco clapping) part. Nunes will be enjoying her composition sitting in the audience. Writing this piece reminded her of when she studied with David Raksin, who wrote down music for Charlie Chaplin. Nunes remarked that teachers/mentors are also influences (she tries to be the best she can) and Raksin taught her the realities of being a working musician. What is next for Nunes? Look for a Composer Club Concert after Easter and Jazz performances with Zion’s For The Sake Of Art program as well as a bilingual opera focused on the Spanish poet Federico Lorca."

FTSOA/VBS
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
The time is here to begin planning for VBS. In order for VBS to take place this year, we need someone to step
up and be the coordinator. As coordinator, you will have the opportunity to: choose curriculum; choose the
week you want VBS to take place (June or July); choose morning, afternoon or evening; choose to serve break-
fast, lunch, dinner or just a snack; look into the opportunity of combining VBS with art camp; and work with a
lot of wonderful volunteers! Jodi Landa is not able to serve as coordinator this year, but will be available to
mentor anyone willing to step up to the plate. If interested, please see Jodi at church, email her at
[email protected] or give her a call at 209-992-7336. The catalog with all the different programs is here,
and planning should begin very soon! Thank you for prayerfully considering this opportunity to serve our
children!
~Jodi
For the month of January the For The Sake Of Art (FTSOA) program had guest artist J.C. Strout at our Saturday Adult class and the projects were a lot of fun. The Fused Glass projects that the kid’s class did in December turned out great and were returned to the students, and as of this writing we are waiting for the Adult class projects to be returned from firing in the special glass kiln.
We in the FTSOA Ministry are hopeful that the project will become an annual event, as well as getting more guest artists to come and share their knowledge and skills in various art mediums with both the kids and adults that attend the classes. To that end, if anyone would like to see a particular art form covered in one of our future classes, please feel free to let one of the FTSOA Ministry members know, and we will do what we can to get it covered in an upcoming class. The members of the Ministry are: Christopher De Roos, Sharyn Carr, Jane Ras-mussen, Connie Eastwood-Crawford, Lynne Terry, and Patti Kennedy Until next month.

Buildings and Grounds Report
January 2016
During the past two months, the following projects have been completed: Three 60” round tables have been ordered for Grace Hall and will be delivered the end of January. Technicians from Bay Alarm have come twice, and the system is working much better. Carpet has been laid in both the sacristy and hallway. Plastic runners have been placed over the carpet in front of the sink and where wine is poured to protect the carpet. The old fluorescent light bulbs have been replaced in the Fireside Room, Grace Hall and the office. On the monthly workday, the bushes in front of the sanctuary were trimmed by the “Donut Kings”. Special thanks goes to Tom Turnrose who pruned all of the oleander bushes on the south side of the parkinglot. Dan Terry (and his son?) cleaned the rain gutters on both the north and south sides of the education wing and office. Vaness Kuhlmann helped with the disposal of damaged furniture. We will continue our work day the 2nd Saturday of each month 8:30-10:30. Bring some tools for what-ever you would like to do. Coffee, pastries, and good fellowship, etc. will be provided. God’s grace be with you. Jerry Hooton
Altar flowers are $50 for an arrangement, and they can be
taken home after the worship service. Envelopes are pro-
vided for you to fill out with information of occasions and
date you want them. Also put your name on the calendar by
entrance door.

The 2017 Zion Chamber Orchestra Festival
Our own Music Director Rhondda Nunes wrote one of the original compositions performed at the second concert. She said that after stripping away the jazzy, bluesy music she usually plays, she got into Iberian ( Spanish, Portuguese) roots. She was able to enjoy her composition while sitting in the audience. Once again the Chamber Orchestra was a great Success!
