Popcorn!By Patrick Glackin

This simple activity helps children to learn odd and even numbers.

If the teachers says an odd number, the children have to crouch down on the ground. If the teacher says an even number the children jump up and say "Popcorn!"

Roll and Write

By Gayle Dubofsky

Age Range: 5 to 7

This game can be played for addition, subtraction, or multiplication.

Each child gets one "die" roll. They then count the dots and write down the number.

Next, they should roll again, count the dots and write the number.

The children fill in the numbers on a pre-made sheet that looks like this:

________+_________=_________

________+_________=_________

________+_________=_________

________+_________=_________

________+_________=_________

Odd or Even?

By Simon Chubb

Age Range: 7 to 11

This game is for two children.

Both players hold one of their hands behind their back. While their hands are held behind their back, they should choose a number from 1 to 5 and hold that number of fingers open. They could also use counters, cubes or sticks to represent the number (or the number could secretly be written on a piece of paper).

At an agreed time, they both reveal their hidden numbers. If the total of these numbers is even, Player A wins.

If the total is odd, player B wins. Children can then try with two hands or more counters, and perhaps find the difference between the two.

For juniors, try multiplying the two numbers revealed. Player B may have something to say about the fairness of the game after a bit!! (and will have learnt something!).

Odd and Even Cones

By A Visitor

Age Range: 5 to 11

To teach odd and even numbers, go outside on a basketball court or soccer field and stick pieces of paper on traffic cones and randomly place the cones through out the field or court.

Written on the pieces of paper should be odd or even numbers. On cone one you could write the number 36 and on cone two you could write the number 47 and so on and so on. Write out at least 15 numbers.

Then take the class outside and tell them that when you yell out the word "ODD" the children must run to a cone with an odd number attached to it and when you yell the word "EVEN" they must run to a cone with an even number attached to it.

The game can also teach prime numbers switching the "odd and even" numbers to "prime and non-prime" numbers.
