On These Truths I Will Stand

On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of the All

Saints Church in Wittenberg, Germany. Luther intended the list as points for de-

bate, but his sharp criticism of the Roman church’s sale of indulgences and his

contention that salvation was dependent on faith, not works, brought him into se-

rious conflict with the religious and secular authorities of his day.

At the Diet of Worms (1521 Imperial Assembly), Luther was commanded to repu-

diate his writings. He stood alone against a gathering of powerful clergy and po-

litical leaders. He responded, “Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain rea-

son (I do not accept the authority of popes and councils because they have contra-

dicted each other), my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will

not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. So help

me God. Amen.”

Luther’s courageous stand for his convictions resulted in him being labeled a

heretic and eventually excommunicated from the church. But today Martin Luther

is universally respected as a man who courageously stood for his convictions.

At the basis of everyone’s Christian faith should be certain doctrinal convictions

that form the foundation of our behavior and our world-view. Jesus prayed,

“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” We should each know what we

believe and why. Like the Apostle Paul, we should be able to say, “It is written: ‘I

believed; therefore I have spoken.’ Since we have that same spirit of faith, we

also believe and therefore speak…” (2 Cor. 4:13).

Recently I’ve been compiling a list of Biblical truths that I am determined to stand

for regardless of the consequences. These principles form the foundation of my

faith and are my doctrinal “non-negotiables.” Since the world loves darkness

rather than light, I understand these Biblical truths inevitably anger those who

don’t know Christ. I also acknowledge that some fellow believers may want to

tweak a phrase or two.

However, the following statements are Biblical certitudes, from Genesis through

Revelation, that define doctrine for me.

1. God created the world, and we are ultimately accountable to Him as the ruler

and sustainer of His universe.

2. Every person has value to God, and every human life is to be treated with

dignity and compassion from conception to natural death.

3. Marriage between a man and a woman is the foundation of the family which

is the basic building block of society. Sexual intimacy is a sacred gift from God

and is a privilege to be reserved for marriage only.

Holy Joe’s Café Special Offering November 11, 2018

Holy Joe’s Café the world wide coffee service to US Military personnel has expanded its

reach while continuing to create a “taste of home” and a morale booster for soldiers de-

ployed throughout the world. Holy Joe’s began in 2006 when the First Congregational

Church UCC, Wallingford CT, learned that a chaplain at a Baghdad airbase was trying to

create a café for the soldiers. Several coffee providers were contacted for donations,

crates of coffee were sent overseas, and a new ministry was born.

Soldiers can’t get regular access to their dining halls outside meal times, so the cafes be-

come important gathering places. Since those cafes are located near the Chaplain’s of-

fice, soldiers find it easier to stop and talk with these men and women dedicated to sup-

porting the mental and spiritual health of soldiers.

Today, Holy Joe’s, named from a civil war nickname for chaplains, distributes coffee in 47

countries around the world. In recent years the ministry has expanded to European bases

and troops in Africa. Holy Joe’s also sends coffee to 63 US bases where soldiers returning

state-side can continue to find a bit of home and relax with a cup of coffee. Help support

our service men/women by making a contribution today. Please designate on your en-

velope “Holy Joe’s Café”.

Pledge to Trinity UCC for 2019

With thoughtful reflection on the mission of Trinity UCC and the

Christian Church and With proportionate use of my/our re-

sources My/Our pledge to Trinity UCC for the year 2019 is:

Week $__________ Month $__________ Year $__________

Name________________________

……………………………………………………………………………………………

FOR MY RECORDS

My pledge to my church for the year 2019

Week $__________Month $__________ Year$__________

Greetings Trinity UCC Parishioners,

The members of the Finance Ministry Team would like to share some thoughts with you

about our stewardship here at Trinity United Church of Christ. You of course know

that we plan our budget and finances and programs according to what you our members

pledge in your tithes and offerings. We know that emergencies and mishaps come up in

life every day, but it is much easier for us if every member fills out a pledge card so we

can plan accordingly for ministry in 2019. We have decided this year to include the

stewardship information in the newsletter instead of in a separate mailing.

As you know we always ask as you give to do so with a cheerful heart and loving spirit

the same way God our Father gives and provides to us, so as you are planning your

amount to pledge please also consider the extra time you can give outside of Sunday

worship and the talents you have to share that will bless others.

Remember our Lord said in Acts that “it is better to give than to receive”.

Our theme this year is a great match for Trinity since it is based on Micah 6:6, which

reads in part “With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on

high?” (ESV)

The members of the early church shared their resources with each other. Think about

how we all brought dishes to the picnic so that everyone would have plenty. We serve a

great God! Let us consider then how we can show our love and support for His church

at Trinity; you’ll be glad and blessed as you do.

Finance Ministry Team

Sugar & Spice Bake Sale

November 17, 2018

Trinity’s Fellowship Hall

8:00-1:00 PM This is the date of the Annual 11th Sugar & Spice Bake Sale sponsored by the CARE SQUARES. We need you to make and/or bake a HOMEMADE item for us to sell. Cookies (we sell by the pound), cakes (Angel food sells quickly), yeast & quick breads, pies and candy are needed.

During the past 10 years we have donated half of our proceeds to the General Fund, supported our Youth Group, given to the Parsonage Renovation Fund as well as making the Care Squares self-supporting.

In 2017, 27 members of our congregation brought homemade items to our kitchen to be readed for sale, a sale that netted $1400.00, which was our biggest ever.

If you can make or bake an item, bring it to the kitchen on Friday, November 16 be-tween 8:30-3:30 p.m. or on Saturday, No-vember 17 before 8:00 a.m.

Thank you for supporting our project by ei-ther making, baking, or buying.

The Care Square Team

Sarah, Brenda, Glenda, Dottie & Wilma.

Thank You Note Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers for our mother. Thank you for

the delicious funeral lunch. Many thanks

to Pastor Jamie for the visits, support and comforting words during her stay at the

nursing home and at the funeral. Your kindness was much appreciated.

Family of Valerie Strupp.

ETSA Women will hold again its Annual Christ-

mas Party for the Protestant Home on Tues-

day, December 11 from 2-4 in the South Din-

ning Room. We have been doing this for them

way before we built Good Samaritan. Each year

our women from the Association have baked

cookies, both regular and some sugar free for

this party. We have about 60 attend and then we

take cookies to some residents who could not at-

tend. Please see if your church women can make

at least 1 dozen cookies and get them to either

me or the Protestant Home before or on that

date. Please call/text me at 812-430-4913 before

December 5th to let me know if your church can

provide cookies.

~8~ Trinity United Church of Christ, Mt. Vernon, IN November 2018

1. Satan is the ultimate source of evil in the world and the archenemy of all that

is good.

2. We have each inherited a carnal nature from Adam and consequently we have

all disobeyed God and are hopelessly trapped in sin and in desperate need of re-

demption.

3. Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God, and He provides the only way to

salvation through faith in His atoning death and bodily resurrection.

4. The Bible is the inspired Word of God, the primary means by which we come

to know Christ, who is the absolute standard of right and wrong.

5. We place our trust in Christ by repenting of our sin, publicly professing our

faith in Christ and being baptized into Him.

6. The Holy Spirit indwells the believer to convict of sin, comfort us in sorrow,

empower us to overcome temptation, embolden our witness and guide us in fol-

lowing God’s will.

7. Jesus Christ will one day return to earth, and then every knee will bow and

every tongue confess that He is Lord.

8. Those who have trusted Christ will reign with Him forever in heaven;those

who have rejected Him will be punished for their sins in hell.

The primary purpose of life is to glorify God by living in obedience to His com-

mands. These Biblically-based statements form the basics of what I believe. While many

of these principles go against a post-Christian culture that chafes against the con-

cept of absolute truth, Jesus warned us that He would at times separate friends and

family. But like Martin Luther we need to say, “Here I stand, I can do no other, so

help me God. Amen”

No one was persecuted for his beliefs more than the Apostle Paul. He reminds us,

“That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame because I know

whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have en-

trusted to him until that day” (2 Timothy 1:12).

I pray God will continue to lead everyone on the path to know and learn His word

and believe what it says. I share this with you so you know what your pastor at

Trinity believes, not to persuade you to conform to my convictions but for you to

see how God has guided me and my study of His word. I have been asked about

many of these scriptures and I share with you where I stand. Blessing in your

study, may you be led by the Spirit of the Living God.

Think about it,

Pastor Jamie
