Easter is a time of fresh starts, and new beginnings – full of hope and possibilities.

On the first Easter Sunday, according to John’s Gospel, Mary Magdalene stays at the empty tomb, weeping. Someone speaks to her. “Why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?” She thinks it must be the gardener, until he calls her “Mary”. She looks up and it is Jesus. He is telling her that something new is happening. The Resurrection has changed everything. This means that his followers will now relate to him in a new way, confident that the resurrection of the body is their future, too.

As the Church we are called to be transformed, so that we can bear witness to that which is “good” and “new.” The Eucharist gathers and forms the Church in communion. Through the sacred act of consecration, ordinary things of this world like bread and wine, are transformed - they are taken up into the life of heaven. They become the Body and Blood of Christ who died, has risen and is now seated at the right hand of the Father.

This struck me as a is a fitting parallel as I consider the transformation and growth in numbers and community that our fledgling church has experienced over the past year. I reflect with pride and gratitude on all of our volunteers who give of their time and talents so generously to create a solid foundation for our many ministries, including our altar servers, catechists, Eucharistic ministers, lectors, musicians and hospitality ministers, as well as the team who lovingly add beauty and reverence to our prayer spaces.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience and commitment as we form and settle our Mass schedule, venue and ministries. I have truly enjoyed getting to know you and your families and look forward to continuing to grow our parish community of faith.

I would also like to acknowledge the support of Fr. Dominic and his staff, as well as our parish schools, in particular St. Brother Andre and St. Julia Billiart for being so accommodating. I would also like to thank Bishop Kirkpatrick and his Eminence Cardinal Collins for their prayers and support.

As His disciples, it is our responsibility to give witness to His truth in the way we live our lives. May we give witness to the Resurrection of Jesus to all we encounter. It was in this spirit of hope that the apostles went forth and proclaimed the good news, following that first Easter!

May the peace of the Risen Lord be with you!

Fr. Joseph

Mental health problems can escalate if not addressed quickly. That’s why the five Catholic Family Services agencies in the Archdiocese of Toronto now offer walk-in counselling. This initiative can often meet clients’ needs without requiring longer term counselling. Clients report a clinically significant increase in confidence that they can tackle their problems. For some agencies, ShareLife is the sole funder of this important program. By supporting ShareLife, you’re helping restore hope to those in crisis. May 5 is ShareLife Sunday. Please give generously.
