REGISTER FOR VBS TODAY!

Once again thousands of United Methodists from most of Virginia will assemble in Roanoke Civic Center for our annual conference June 15-19, 2011. This is the time each year when clergy and laity have the opportunity to worship, learn, fellowship, and participate in setting the future for the United Methodist Church. There will be an ordination service on Friday night and a memorial service on Saturday. This year’s theme is “Being Christ to Others: Snapshots of the Kingdom”. The focus of the gathering will be on mission as well as electing delegates to 2012 General and

Jurisdictional Conferences. Bishop Kammerer has invited the Rev. Sam Wells, dean of Duke Chapel in Durham, N.C., to be the conference preacher. Annandale UMC will be represented by Rev. Clarence Brown, Rev. Eduardo Carrillo, Rev. Cynthia Johnson-Oliver, and Dr. Paul Shin, clergy, and Kevin Sabo and Janet Petty, laity. Alexandria District delegates from AUMC are John and Betty Reeves. The global mission projects designated by the bishop for the Annual Conference Offering include $50,000 for Mozambique – Leadership Development/Living Water; $50,000 for Brazil – Shade and Fresh Water/Children at Risk; $50,000 for Agape Christian Children’s Community Center, Inc. on the Eastern Shore, and $50,000 for Shalom Zone: Grace Ministries – Roanoke. Read Acts 2:1-21 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, Phrygia, Papphylia, Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs. Do you know what these words have in common? What you have read is the diversity of languages and backgrounds the Holy Spirit is conducting through

the disciples in order to transmit the good news. Now if the Holy Spirit is able to be among different cultures and languages and make sense of it all, why, with our advances in communications are we isolated from our own communities? Has the Holy Spirit stopped? Perhaps the breath of God is not as palpable as it used to be? When the disciples started speaking different languages and the tongues of fire were upon them, the big barrier between the Good News and the people was the difference of language. Now it seems that communication has become something that can be done in our cars, around the corner and even on the opposite side of the world. Even translations are easier to access. Then why is it difficult to talk to people about the Good News? As Disciples of Christ we need to step out of our comfort zones and talk about the Good News. Maybe your forte is not speaking; communication is not only verbal but physical. Therefore we can live out the Good News; the way we treat others: instead of gossip let’s do blessing; instead of cursing let's pray for our enemies. Let the Holy Spirit fill our speech and our actions so the world knows about the Good News.

Peace,

Eduardo Carrillo
