Most are vaporized before reaching the ground, but occasionally some get through and hit Earth. Australia (particularly Western Australia) has a number of "Earth wounds" where meteorites have hit the ground leaving scars. Join DMP's Mike Freeman as he gives a presentation he recently gave to NASA, the US Geological Survey's Astrogeology group and Utah State University in the United States about some of our meteorite impacts and their geological consequences. Biography: As a young school kid in South Australia, Mike Freeman was fascinated by the meteorites in museum displays and his interest has remained with him ever since. Through his interest, he was invited to give a series of talks in the United States, including NASA, US Geological Survey’s Astrogeology Laboratory and Utah State University in 2015. Mr Freeman graduated in geology from Adelaide University and has had a wealth of diverse experience. They have included engineering and hydrogeology; exploration, mine planning and feasibility studies for a major phosphate rock mine; and author of the first 1:250 000-scale geological map for the Northern Territory Geological Survey. In Western Australia, Mr Freeman was involved in defining and establishing the Kundana gold deposit, near Kalgoorlie, as well as coal-seam modelling of the now being mined Ewington-Premier mine at Collie. For the last 20 years he has worked for the Department of Mines and Petroleum where he has made an important contribution in resolving disputes between resource development and other land usages. A significant achievement has included his initiative of producing land-use planning maps of mineralisation to assist the State to protect known deposits from conflicting land uses.

Roving Report

Dear Member, I trust you all enjoyed a happy, healthy, and perhaps even a holy Christmas, and are refreshed ready to face even

more of those slings and arrows of outrageous fortune that seem to be aimed at our dear industry. Let’s hope that the

missile shower diminishes a bit in the coming months. Last month we looked at the sad experience of the Samarco tailings dam collapse. I do occasionally look at the

Linked-In debates for “Mining Industry Professionals” although sometimes I despair of the level of debate that is

entered into, as per the attached “what… I need to design …tailing storage facility?” Simples, as the meerkats would

say - get some professional help! If even after experiences such as we have recently witnessed, we think that something as fundamental as this can be done with anything but the greatest care, attention, and risk mitigation, we

shouldn’t be allowed to run mines. This is such a crucial area; you ain’t gonna get answers from exchanging e-mails

with people on Linked-In.

That said, one of the responses to the debate was to recommend the excellent Australian Government publication. A good starting point to at least understand what questions need to be asked, and to illustrate what one doesn’t know. Then, go and talk to specialists that do know. So what to write in this, the first Newsletter of the year? It’s always been a challenge for me every New Year, and so partly for reasons of personal circumstance, I have seized upon the topic of…….change. With the end of a short-term contract on 11 December, I found myself retrenched, retired, or simply “resting between engagements” as they used to say in the theatre. Of the three, the latter is by far the best description, and I took the opportunity over the Christmas break to get round to some of those many things that in the flurry of every day work just get pushed to one side. It’s so perverse that the way our working lives are constructed, when we are busy we have no time for worrying about what comes next, and then once we drop off that particular cliff we have the time on our hands such that all we do is worry! In similar vein our earning potential is quite the wrong way round. We need the money most in the early years of family, schooling, mortgages, and a myriad other bills. In later years with those expenses gone, and one’s needs are somewhat reduced (a bottle or two of wine of an evening) we can probably survive on much less. Screw all the debate about superannuation, let’s place new graduates on top salaries, and gradually diminish their pay. Great experiment in social engineering, don’t you think!

As part of my “resting”, I had availed myself of the facilities at MineSpace, which I must say are superb as a place to bump into others, taste Jasmine and Adrian’s excellent coffee, and be able to work peacefully away. I am indebted to MineSpace, and to the AusIMM Perth Branch for having made this arrangement. Useful to all, not just those without a full-time role. Sadly, the arrangement came to a “pause” as Adrian and Jasmine have had to regroup and work out the business model for what they were offering, and we must wait with bated breath how this will work out. The facility to rent a well-serviced “base camp” in a great location (top end of West Perth) is such a good one that I am surprised more didn’t make use of it. Let’s hope that it can get started again. Further on the theme of facing change, as part of the Branch’s AGM, a solid turnout greatly enjoyed Chris Davis’ enigmatic presentation based around his own personal career and journey through life aptly entitled “Jump through any Open Window”. Not an exhortation to behave like lemmings and thereby reduce the unemployment rate, but to seize upon interesting options and new horizons – some of which may not even appear as being opportunities, but may yield as yet unexplored avenues worthy of trying out. Don’t close doors, or in this case, windows notes Chris –

himself the prime example of a consummate professional who personally has enough track record in his own right to fill several CV’s. Change in a bad way in the world of copper. Whilst Chile hangs onto its prime position as the world’s biggest producer of the red metal, it fell below 30% for the first time in many years as grades fall, production margins shrink, and as others such as Perú increase their production. With an economy so heavily dependent on copper mining, this is placing a great deal of strain on the Government’s ability to finance all the many social and other programs it needs. Same issues of course in Brazil – facing very tough times – and indeed in our own country. The aptly named “Resource Curse” can become just that if it’s cyclical nature isn’t recognized and planned for.

And so to change of a positive nature, may this set the tone for a better year for us all. From Mining to Wining Read that carefully. It’s not winning, nor is it whining…but it is to do with that most important of liquids, wine – and good wine at that. Life is definitely too short to drink bad wine, and so with a bit of time on my hands and the need to get out of Perth over the Australia Day weekend, I made it down to Denmark (WA, not Scandinavia) and dropped in en route to a couple of wineries, as one surely must. First stop was Poacher’s Ridge near Mt. Barker, run by Alex Taylor – a former oil exploration executive - who has taken to exploring a different kind of ground. Terroir in this case. His winery has made quite a name for itself in particular producing a Marsanne which has gained plaudits from James Halliday over several years. Alex is a great “mine host”, not averse to sampling his own produce, and matching it to good food cooked by wife Janet in their restaurant.

In my days at Signet Engineering, we did a lot of work with Snowden, perhaps because of the strong southern African connection, and it was always a pleasure to deal with founders Phil and Viv Snowden. I previously knew of Viv as the exceptionally bright head of Anglo’s Operational Research Department in the 80’s, which was at the heart of mine modelling and planning, a massive task in those days before we had access to such powerful computers and software.

Setting up the Singlefile Winery near Denmark soon after they sold Snowden Consulting, they applied research in choosing the location and matching it to a style of wine, and have developed the estate into a top class producer of

Chardonnay and other styles including a delicious pinot noir. James Halliday has been effusive in his praise and the award of his prized points! Well worth visiting when you’re down there.

MAP – Member’s Assistance Program

Are you currently unemployed or just not getting as much work as you would prefer right now?

If so, then apply for MAP and let the AusIMM help you maintain your network and continuing professional development by making it affordable to remain involved….. Just as you’ve supported us through the good and bad times, we see it as our turn to help you through the tough times. MAP is not charity, it is the pay-back for all those years of membership subscriptions you’ve been paying, or if you are new the years in the future you remain a member.

MAP has been developed to provide support to AusIMM members who are experiencing disruption in their professional circumstances due to the downturn in industry activity. The AusIMM understands that we operate in a cyclical market, and as such can experience changing employment dynamics outside of our control. When such disruptions happen mid-career, there can be major financial pressures, so we have offered a range of assistance and benefits including:

one complimentary AusIMM conference registration in 2016 (valued at over $1000)

one complimentary AusIMM publication in electronic format in 2016 (valued at up to $165)

50% off the member price for attendance at additional AusIMM conferences in 2016,

50% off the member price of additional AusIMM publications in 2016, and

Free access to the AusIMM Webinar “MAP series” and the MAP online toolkit aimed at increasing your employability.

If you have already paid a full year's subscription, a successful enrolment onto MAP will roll the remaining portion of your subscription onto a credit towards next year's subscription.

These benefits are in addition to existing PD opportunities that are free to all members, including access to OneMine, The AusIMM Bulletin, Transactions journals, Branch technical meetings and other free events.

Let us help you during periods of unemployment or underemployment……

Remember, the AusIMM can provide some of the support and structure usually provided by a work environment. Engaging with us can potentially increase connections to find further work and provide you with timely peer support. We encourage you to make full use of the networks and the very real financial support that the AusIMM is willing to provide.

Many of us can find it difficult to discuss with friends and colleagues whether we are struggling. Should you know someone “doing it tough”; encourage them to avail themselves of our assistance as we believe we have a role extending support to all industry professionals.

Don’t be shy – my complimentary MAP conference in late September 2013 (GeoMet 2013) provided a connection that ultimately led to a lengthy contract in 2014.
