If you have an iPhone or Android, consider using two step authentication (Google Authenticator app), which can be used to better secure access to your bank, and other sensitive sites. – This does NOT require a google account and does not share info with google.

Keep your email address password different from all other passwords.

WHY?

Because if you use the same email address (username) and password on different sites and one of those sites get compromised (hacked) then the hackers have your email address and email password… Hackers then use your email password to access your email account, steal your list of contacts, and send out spam to your friends. Do NOT share your Apple ID's with other family memembers or your children.

Each spouse and child should have their own Apple ID account.

It is my recommendation to NOT create an @icloud.com email address. Use your outlook.com or gmail.com address instead.

Apple Devices - Common Mistakes:

Make sure you are the only one using your Apple ID, and that your spouse and children have their own

Apple ID / iCloud Accounts. Sharing Apple ID accounts will create many unforeseen problems as an Apple ID is

designed for ONE PERSON.

What is an Apple ID Account? It is your login information for all things Apple. It is used to log into iCloud,

iTunes, FaceTime, and iMessage.

Always use a pass code lock. Apple has a feature called "Find my iPhone". This feature works great if your

device is lost or stolen, but it is almost useless if you don't have a passcode lock on the main screen of your device.

I highly recommend enabling the feature "Erase Data" that will wipe your iPhone / iPad after 10 failed unlock

attempts. If this feature is not enabled, anyone can guess your password within an hour or so). Remember, you

need to make sure that you are using iCloud for backup. (Settings, iCloud, Storage and Backup, enable iCloud

Backup). Make sure the “Control Center” (Settings, Control Center) is accessible from the lock screen so that if any

one that finds your device, they can attempt to connect it to Wi-Fi (a good thing). I also recommend using

Dropbox to upload your pictures to your pc. Make sure you enable Dropbox background uploading. Write / tape

your phone number on the outside of your iPad (Home/Cell or Spouse) / iPhone (Home or Spouse). Not everyone is

bad, having your phone number will allow people to try contact you and give you your device back.

DON’T MAKE THESE MISTAKES:

Find my iPhone works by sending a ping to devices connected to your iCloud / Apple Account. If you are not

signed in on your device, your device cannot be found. If your device becomes disconnected from your Apple

account, disconnected from your service provider (ATT, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint) or physically powered off,

you will not be able to find your device. Do not disconnect / stop service on your device if it becomes lost or

stolen. (Do not call your carrier such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, or Sprint).

Often people lose their iPhone then attempt to use "find my phone" from a pc or a friends phone. Many

do not remember their apple ID password, and reset it so they can gain access to the site to find their phone.

Unfortunately, once that password is reset, it will disconnect all devices from your apple ID, and therefore (the lost

device) cannot be found using "find my iPhone".

Things to remember:

Use iCloud backup

Use Dropbox (camera upload)

Use a passcode lock

Enable "Erase Data"

Enable "Find my iPhone"

Know your apple ID and password

Remember to check your backup setting occasionally. (Settings, iCloud, Storage and Backup, press "Backup Now").

The last backup date will appear. Make sure it is within the last 24 hours.

On your device, open Dropbox occasionally, this will ensure that your pictures & videos are being synced to

Dropbox (and to your computer).

Backup TO your computer occasionally. This will transfer your purchased apps to your computer. After using your

computer to make a backup, check your iPhone again to make sure “iCloud Backup" is still enabled.

When restoring your new iPhone (recovering from a lost / stolen / broken iPhone), restore from iCloud. Then to

retrieve your apps from your computer, use iTunes to "transfer purchases".

What to do when you lose your device:

If you have followed all of the above steps and lose your device, follow the steps below.

Use iCloud.com to access the “find my phone” and attempt to locate your device.

Do not wipe your device – unless you know it was stolen and it has been at least a few weeks and you KNOW you

will never get it back.

Use “Lost Mode” to try to find it IF it is not showing up on the map.

Note: if you have a Wi-Fi only device (iPod touch, iPad), your device will probably not connect back to Wi-Fi

(besides at your house and any other access point you connected to) and will eventually turn off. Make sure the

“Control Center” (Settings, Control Center) is accessible from the lock screen so that if any one that finds your

device, they can attempt to connect it to Wi-Fi (a good thing).

Pictures to PC (Using Dropbox)

After you take pictures with your mobile device ( Android, iPhone or iPad )… Open Dropbox on your mobile device. – Keep the app open if you have a lot of pictures. Let Dropbox upload the photos and videos from your camera roll. This happens automatically and takes longer for videos. Once the uploading has completed, you can then go to your computer and open the Dropbox folder. Open “Camera Uploads”. Treat this folder like your camera’s memory card and CUT the pictures from the event you want to organize. Follow the “Organizing Pictures” tutorial. Eventually, you should have an empty “Camera Uploads” folder on your computer. Once this folder is empty, and you are sure you have run Dropbox again to upload any remaining photos or videos, you can DELETE the pictures out of your CAMERA ROLL (on your iPhone) and also from PHOTO STREAM. Be sure to pay attention the first time you do this that the pictures in CAMERA ROLL are actually saved and organized on your computer. Your Phone / Camera will eventually run out of space if you don’t remove pictures from it (Camera Roll). PhotoStream only keeps the last 1000 items from your camera roll (pictures or videos). So eventually it will be cleared out, additionally, iCloud has a size limit and videos will easily put you over your limit, which will most likely stop your backup. Take the time to organize your photos now, while you can easily label them, because trying to sort them later is always much more difficult and extremely time consuming. Remember, if you want to keep photos ON your camera, then SYNC them back to your iPhone via iTunes or copy them to your personal Dropbox Pictures folder (not the “camera uploads” folder). Why is using Dropbox so great (instead of copying and pasting from the phone itself)? Using Dropbox is great because it gets your pictures (and videos) to your PC or MAC wirelessly from anywhere. Dropbox renames your Pictures with the date and time taken, so when multiple people take pictures at an event with iPhones, or Androids, they can all be placed in the same shared folder and they are automatically organized by when they were taken, and not by some random number.
