Do you like what you s ee, the feedback that you give etc?  Notes I'd suggest that you come into this session with some plan for noting you assessment of your players. So lets give them 5 minutes. During this time - it's always interesting to see which players emerge as team leaders - which players are listened to etc. You might consider telling the players that the have 5 minutes to warm up as a group, tell them where they should do it, and let them get on with it (jogging up and down the pitch, stretching, dynamic stretches etc). There should be no contact in this session - so you have the freedom to give your players some space to shape at least this part of training. 1/6 Designed using Sportplan Online Planner, www.sportplan.net/planner

Making notes and assessing your players

Notes

Suggest ion:

Players name are noted and you l is t the sk i l ls that you are look ing to assess .You then have the numbers 1 to 5 or 1 to 10 l is ted bes ide the sk i l l .

As th e s es s io n pr og es s es awa rd ea ch pl aye r a nu m be r e. g. 1 be in g a po or pa s soff the left hand, 5 being being a good pass off the left hand but poor whenpressure i s app l ied, and 10 be ing an exce l lent pass o f f the le f t hand even whenpressure is app l ied.

IDEA : Why not v ideo a number o f your ses s ion and then have a l ook a t yourse l f  coaching. Do you like what you s ee, the feedback that you give etc?

Notes

I 'd suggest that you come in to th is sess ion wi th someplan for not ing you assessment o f your p layers .Remember to keep your p layers under eva luat ion and tobuild a profile of each player. This will give you as acoach a clear view of what you need to help players toimprove and wi l l a ls o a l low your p layers to honest ly th inkabout what they need to improve.

Als o - i f y ou ar e se le cti ng pl aye rs fo r a te am - th ey wi lloften ask when they were not picked. By assessing and

providing feedback, you can say why!

Warm Up

Let's get moving

Coaching Tips

Remind you p layers that they ' re here to t ra in , to lead and be ing pass ive is not anopt ion.

Encourage players to work as a team. Explain clearly what you expect of them -and le t them do i t . Keep an eye out fo r leaders , who is be ing l i s tened to e tc .

Discussion

At t he en d of th is se cti on of th e wa rm -up - b ri ng th e pl aye rs ba ck i n fo r a ver ybrief chat, what went well, who was a good leader - what could we change for nexttime etc?

Keep the chat brief, very brief - then let you players know that they will have fiveminutes a t the s tart o f the nex t sess ion to run the ir own warm up.

5 minutes

I 'm a lways keen to a l low p layers s ometime to takerespons ib i l i ty fo r the ir own warm-up. So le ts g ive them 5minutes . During th is t ime - i t 's a lways in teres t ing to seewhich p layers emerge as team leaders - wh ich p layersare l is tened to e tc .

You might cons ider te l l ing the p layers that the have 5minutes to warm up as a group, te l l them where theyshould do i t , and le t them get on wi th i t ( jogg ing up anddown the pitch, stretching, dynamic stretches etc). Thereshould be no contact in th is sess ion - so you have the

freedom to g ive your p layers some space to shape a tleas t th is part o f t ra in ing.

Passing Grid

Coaching Tips

1. Remind p layers to get the ir  hands out to catch the ball.

2. Think about the weighting of the pass - is the reciever c lose or fa r away?

3. Do p layers need to use a sp inpass a l l the t ime.

4. Encourage players to providea pass that the reciever canrun onto.

5 . Is the form of the pass good -remind p layers about the keyfac tors regard ing the pas swithout stopping them e.g. askp layers that are wai t ing to go.

6 . Speed ontp the ba l l .7. Goo d comm unication e.g. the

use o f names , locat ion,distance etc.

Remember - th is is the warm-up. Itmight be wise to pick maybe one or two coaching points rather than trying to doeverything at once. Your objective here is to get the players warm - bit I 'm never keen to scarfice good form at any time - getting the players to do it right over andover wi l l fo rm good hab i ts - accept ing poor pass ing e tc . a t any time r is ks p layersforming or re-enforc ing bad habbi ts .

5 minutes

Let's s pend f ive minutes runn ing and mov ing the ba l lth rough the hands. We wi l l do that us ing the L gr id .

Remember - you can start working within the first twocones of the L - therefore keeping the passing short -before expanding out wider to two cones, then three etc.Increas ing the pass as you go.

In th is case I wouldn ' t add defenders as the p layers aregett ing gett ing warmed up.

Progression

1. You might wish to get p layers coming o f f the ground and runn ing onto the ba l l e .g . get the f i rs t ,second, third etc. reciever to lay flat on the group - telling them that they can only get up and runonto the ba l l when the ba l l carr ie r nex t to them has the ba l l and is mov ing.

2. Why not have the playing run the L with a tennis ball, doing their best to keep the flight of the ballflat - they will need to follow through the pass with both hands in order to do this. If you do use atenn is ba l l - don ' t fo rget to get a rugby ba l l back in there a f ter a coup le o f goes with the tenn is ba l l .

Passing Box

Passing, communicat ion, fit ness, pressure and awareness all rolled into o ne!

Coaching Tips

Players are be ing as ked to th ink and scan for the ba l l dur ing th is excercise . Youmight f ind that some p layers are fee l ing rea l ly pushed as they tr ip and th inkabout almost everything at once - and this is without defenders!

Hands shou ld be up.

Communicat ion is so important here , and the p layers on the cone shou ld o f fer he lp fu l communicat ion and encouragement.

Are pl ay er s wor kin g ha nd to ta ke s te ps ba ck i f n ee ds , a nd to com e on to th e ba llat pace. Depth = time to think and time to gather pace onto the ball.

Notes

Players are pass ing the ba l l over short d is tances - is the pass weightedcorrec tly, a re p layers sp inn ing the ba l l when there is no need?

Work l ike th is fo r about one minute before changing the runners . I 'd suggest thatyou have 10 players at each box. This allows for six to be involved at any onetime, and two to be recovering if needed.

10 Mins

In th is part o f the sess ion you shou ld s et up a 10x10 gr id ,wi th two pass ing p layers work ing ins ide and a p layer oneach corner cone on the grid.

There will be two balls - one at the first set of cones - andone a t the second set.

The ba l l carr ie rs run forward and take the f i rs t ba l l ,pass ing i t to the second runner who then passes i t to theperson on the oppos i te cone. Then the pass ing p layerstake the second ba l l and do the sam e th ing - th is t imepass ing i t in the oppos i t ie d irec t ion.

When the p layers have comple ted the ir run through thegrid comple t ing two sets o f la tera l pas s ing o f f oppos i tehands - they will turn - and run back through the griddo ing the same th ing.

Progression

Get some compet i t ion go ing. Each group o f runners have one mi nute to comple te as many ups anddown runs as they can without dropp ing the ba l l o r mak ing a bad pass .

Ever Increasing Distance - Test ing to t he limit

Coaching Tips

You will find that many of the coaching points that are noted above can beappl ied to th is part o f the sess ion.

For me th is is about tes t ing p layers , and push ing them a l i t t le fu rther each t ime.Looking at the noted progressions will allow you to have a look at your playersab i l i ty to execute a task whi le under press ure, e .g . does the ir f i tness a l low themto perform the same task aga in and aga in - wi l l s i lm i la r outcomes.

Discussion

If you decide to stop the exercise to chat to players - do your best to make itquick and to get the players back into action as soon as you can. Ask, don't tell -and get the players thinking about one or two targets that you're keen to develop.

If you decide to stop the exercise to chat to players - do your best to make itquick and to get the players back into action as soon as you can. Ask, don't tell -and get the players thinking about one or two targets that you're keen to develop.

Progression:

You might dec ide to tes t f in tess even more by hav ing the non ba l l carry ing p layer at each end go down flat onto his front before getting to his feet again and

runn ing onto the ba l l . Th is wi l l inc rease depth , shou ld encourage speed onto theba l l , and wi l l push p layers workra te to a new leve l .

You may a lso dec ide that you would l ike the p layers on the cones to do m ore. There they could complete one press-up after each pass out - increasing this asthe sess ion bu i lds .

10 Mins

In th is dr i l l we bu i ld on what we have a lready done, butadd a l i t t le more press ure in the form of an ever increas ing pass .

We wi l l be do ing the same as above, but th is t ime I wantyou to ask the guys on the cones to take an extra step outafter they make each pass. In doing so I want you to getthe guys to take the cones with them. If you feel that as tep out is too much you might as them to take a ha l f  s tep.

The d is tance between the runners can a lso increase asthe ac t iv i ty progresses .

Keep go ing unt i l the p layers reach the po in t o f fa i lu re interms o f the ir ab i l i ty to pass the ba l l aga in and aga in over

d is tance. Th is is a pos i t ive and invo lved tes t fo r a l lp layers invo lved.

Progression

You might dec ide to tes t f in tess even more by hav ing the non ba l l carry ing p layer a t each end godown f la t onto h is f ront before gett ing to h is feet aga in and runn ing onto the ba l l . Th is wi l l inc reasedepth , shou ld encourage speed onto the ba l l , and wi l l push p layers workra te to a new leve l .

You may also decide that you would like the players on the cones to do more. There they couldcomple te one press-up a f ter each pass out - inc reas ing th is as the sess ion bu i lds .

Passing f rom the deck! (Scrum half t esting)

Adding another layer to t he passing te st

Notes

Your players on the cones will have tocatch the ba l l f rom the runners , p lacei t on the ground and then pass i t f romthe ground.

10 Mins

This is very s imi la r to what is noted above, but th is t ime Iwant you to get the players on the cones to pass the ballo f f the ground to the ir mov ing targets . Aga in you shou ldget the p layers to expand the d is tance o f the ir pass asthe sess ion progresses.

Coaching Tips

Aga in m an y i f n ot al l of th e coa chi ng po in ts no te d ab ov e ha ve th ei r pl ace , b ut youmight think about the following.

The foot pos i t ion o f the p layer pass ing the ba l l o f f the ground. Is the p layer pass ing d irec t ly from the deck , or is he/she l i f t ing the ba l l andthen pass ing - what are the pros and cons o f both?Communication, the type of communication and the quality. What is beingsa id , why - has i t purpose? The direction and speed of the pass - is it in front of the player catching sothey can run onto it.

How can my t eam have so many scrum halfs?:

OK, your team is not made up o f s c rum ha l fs , and you might argue that have four a t each gr id is notposs ib le . But that is not rea l ly what th is is about. I fee l that in the m odern game you need p layers thatcan excute a great many o f what would have trad i t iona l ly been descr ibed as the ir team-mates sk i l ls .Therefore why not get as many p layers work ing on the ir ab i l i ty to pass from the ground as you can,and take this opportunity to evaluate their ability to excute the task.

Here are the reasons why:

1 . I th ink your p layers wi l l th ink a l i t t le more about what the 9 has to do t ime and t ime aga in andposs ib ly l is ten a l i t t le more.

2 . How many t imes has your 9 got h imsel f invo lved in a ruck and another p layer has had to s tepin , don ' t you want that a l l import feed to be s o l id?

3. You might find that you have players that operate very well in different positi ons.

Progression

You might th ink o f putting the p layers pass ing o f f the ground under more pressure a t the exerc iseprogresses. The fo l lowing are som e suggest ions :

1 . A press-up or two, or th ree, or four between passes.2. Having to sprint to a definded area an d back before getting back to recieve and make the

p a s s .3. A player in front of them on the ground, but with the ability to get up and press ure the

passer as s oon as he puts h is hands onto the ba l l .

Adding More Pressure

A skill is only a skill when it can be completed under pressure!

Coaching Tips

Encourage p layers to move defenders .

Are th ey ru nn in g li ne s th at su pp or t t he ba ll ca rr ie r, can th ey m ove de fe nd er saway from the space that they are looking to attack and can they attack the spacebefore i t is gone?

Notes

I t 's not jus t about drawing the ba l l carr ie r. You shou ld th ink about mov ing the ba l lcarr ie r to c reate space, and the support ing p layer shou ld a lso th ink aboutmov ing h is defender to c reate space. Therefore , when the pass is made, i t ismade in to s pace for a support ing p layer to come onto . In the exerc ise we hope toattack space, and to create space where it is not yet there.

10 Mins

This t ime I want you to has a gr id that is a l i t t le b igger than what you started with, but the players are not going

to keep expanding the s ize o f the g ird as the sess ionp ro g re s s e s .

The difference here is that we are going to place adefender with a ruck/tackle shield into the grid - it will betheir job to place the attackers under a new type of pressure. The defender s hou ld t rack a t tackers , m ak ingl i fe hard for them.

Remember: the runner are the target - the defender shou ld not in terfer wi th the pass from the cones. I t w i l l beup to you to dec ide i f the pass from the cones shou ld beoff the ground or out of the hand.

Progression

You might cons ider the fo l lowing, but there won' t be t ime for a l l o f them:

1. Increase the number o f defenders , the ir ro le is not to tackle but to put pressure on theattackers. I would stay that you should go to no more than three defenders - and only if youwish to see l ines o f runners , leg dr ives through contac t, examples o f support andcommunication etc. But don't be afriad to take a risk if you have the time - and to see whathappens!

2 . Have on ly one p layer fo r every two cones, th is wi l l mean that the passer wi l l have to be i np lace to rec ieve the ba l l o f f the s econd rece iver. I t a lso means that the p layers carry ing theba l l fo rward wi l l have to th ink about ho ld ing the ba l l up a l i t t le longer to g ive the las trece iver t ime to get to pos i t ion .

Cool Down

Near ly t ime fo r home

Notes

Make i t fun ! You 've been push ing your p layers to the l imi t o f the ir ab i l i t iesthroughout the sess ion and i t is v i ta l tha t they go home fee l ing good and notthinking too much about what went wrong!

5 Mins

I 'm go ing to leave th is b i t o f the sess i on to you.

The only thing I would note is that you think hard aboutmaking the cool down fun and that you send the playersaway on a high.
