Defending1. Stand the player up and don't dive in.

2. See the player and the ball at all times. Focus on the ball when defending one versus one.

3. Keep the player in front of you.

4. Bend your knees and be on your toes.

5. Be prepared to move backwards and or to the side quickly.

6. Listen to your teammates behind you. They can give you directions, such as steering the player to thetouchline, inside or to make a tackle when there's an opportunity.7. Work to make attackers make mistake - have patience and don't fall for feints.

8. Force the attacker into pressure - where there are other defenders.

9. Work to keep the ball in front of you - it's fine to let an attacker have the ball with his back turned to you away from goal. No need to foul.10. If support is behind, increase pressure and look to win the ball.

Shooting•Get a good first touch that's out of your feet so you can take a shot right away. •Keep your knee and head over the ball.•Land on your shooting foot when shooting with power (follow through).•Strike the centre of the ball and strike through the ball.•Keep your toes pointed down and your ankle locked.•Decide whether you want to strike with power or place the ball into the corner.•Keep your hips square to your target or where you want to shoot the ball.•Take a look before you get the ball, know where the goal and the keeper are.•Keep your head down and over the ball when you take a shot. •Think about forcing the keeper to make a save - don't blast the ball as hard as you can.•Bend your knees and have a strong centre of gravity - good balance. •Adjust to the ball by moving your feet so they are underneath you.

PassingTo make a good pass in football, strike the ball with pace so that your teammate doesn't have to wait on the ball. A firm pass is more likely to arrive at its destination. If you play a soft pass this means you want your teammate to come back to the ball or you might be setting them up for a cross or shot. But if the pass is too soft you could be setting them up for a hospital ball - meaning they're bound to get injured trying to win the ball from the defender who's closing down the space. Inside of the Foot: This is the most useful part of the foot to use when passing the ball. Inside Edge of the Foot: This is the same as the above but with the upper portion of your foot to bend the ball, as in when you wrap your foot around the ball so it curves into your teammate’s feet or into an area, as with a cross. Outside of the Foot: This kind of pass is used when you want to bend the ball into a teammate or into an area.

Physical strengthThe shoulder charge is one of the most useful skills which a defender can have in his arsenal - and all young players should be able to learn this without difficulty. All that there is to a shoulder charge is to place your shoulder squarely against the shoulder of the opponent, and push against him. To start off, make sure that everyone's elbows are tucked in and pair kids by size/aggressiveness when to avoid injury. Simply allow the players to walk around without a ball, while pushing into one another with their shoulders. Show them that they can push very hard, even against the Coach, if they get their weight down and use their far leg to give additional power.

ControlCan you trap a ball? Probably. Can you trap a ball while under pressure? Not sure. When controlling the ball you should always have a goal in mind. Knowing whether you will pass to a team member, or dribble at a defender will affect what kind of kind is best. Practice this regularly to develop these skills. First, all rolling balls should be controlled with the instep of inside of your foot. Be precise with this movement. Don't be lazy with it. If the ball is a little higher, between the foot and the knee use the instep of the foot again, although this time lift the leg up.You might also trap the ball on your chest or thigh. The chest is a great example of knowing whether you will pass to a teammate, keep it yourself or do some other move. As you know ball control is not only about controlling the pass at your feet or immediately in front of your. Ball control can be counted as control the ball to accomplish the desired task. This task might be a pass to a teammate.

SkillsThe Cruyff Turn:•Facing your opponent with the ball, position your body to feign a cross or shot.•Then drag the ball with your foot behind your standing leg.•Turn and be on your way while the opponent is left flat-footed.The Zidane Roulette/Mara Dona's 360º Spin Move•While dribbling with the ball close to your body, turn to shield the ball as you reach an opponent face-to-face.•With your back to the player, in the same movement, put your foot on the ball and delicately bring it around with you.•Leave the opponent trailing as you turn around his body. The Shoulder Feint•Feign to go one way by dropping one shoulder as if moving in that direction.•Then quickly go the other way and wrong-foot your marker. This is best achieved with your back to the opponent.

GoalkeepingA goalkeeper must be quick. You need quick feet, quick hands, and a quick mind. You must be able to get from a standing position to a laying position in less than a second. While an ideal goalkeeper is agile, flexible, and manoeuvrable, with long arms, large hands, a slender torso, and powerful legs, every goalkeeper must be determined. A goalkeeper must be tough. Falling to the ground, diving from side to side, sliding, colliding, and slamming into aggressive opponents are all a normal part of a game. A goalkeeper must have good hands. His goal is to catch every shot, stopping the offensive motion against him. Good hands means getting both hands onto the ball whenever possible. A goalkeeper must have a strong foot. Taking goal kicks, free kicks, and punting the ball are all part of a goalkeeper’s responsibilities. When your team is on your offensive end of the field, pull forward away from your goal and out past your goal box. 1-on-1 is the hardest positioning to master. Don’t leave your line until you know you have become the last line of defence and your teammates will not be able to reach your opponent in time.

DribblingUsing your arms is a very important part of dribbling. You can use them to help beat other players, shield, and to keep your balance (a huge part of dribbling). An athletic position will allow for maximum speed while dribbling and allows you to cut better. Your dribbling position should be relaxed and comfortable. Do not lean back or forward. While dribbling it is VERY IMPORTANT to remain on the balls of your feet. This allows you to easily shift positions and dribble at maximum speed. Your place foot and your dribbling foot should both land on the balls of your feet. This allows you to jog or sprint naturally with the ball. You should raise the knee of the dribbling foot with every type of dribbling touch. When you first started dribbling, your probably dribbled slowly. When you sped up, you probably lost control. However, you should now be able to jog with the ball. Practice jogging and soon you will be able to sprint with the ball. Don’t rush things though, it important that the ball always stays close to you.

Free Kicks Positioning: Put a ball on the edge of the area, as in the diagram below. Approach the ball at an angle running across the direction of the goal, in a relaxed movement, not too fast.

Contact: If you hit the ball straight it would head for the corner flag. Instead, hit the ball with the inside of your big toe, just where your toe ends and your foot begins. The impact will roll the ball along the inside of your foot. Your foot meets the ball in the bottom corner. Always use bottom left or right depending on which foot you use.

Movement: Your standing leg should not move and should still be pointing at an angle away from the target. Swing your kicking leg in towards the goal, without bending it. Now you’re doing exactly what David Beckham, Ronaldinho and Frank Lampard do day-in and day-out on the soccer training pitch.

Ball flight: Because you are hitting the ball from underneath, there will be sufficient lift to take the ball up and over the wall. As your foot comes across and around, you create ball spin which makes the ball bend and dip. You can get extra height by leaning your shoulders back.

Number 5• Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich)• Ask anyone at the Allianz Arena, and they will tell

you that the world’s best player this year has been Bayern’s impish midfield creator, with the France international having been especially outstanding in the Bavarian giants’ remarkable record-breaking season last time out, when they claimed both the Urfa Champions League and the Bundesliga and Cup double back at home.

Number 4• Luis Suarez (Liverpool)Maybe on current form, the world’s best footballer and if not, then certainly the Uruguay attacker is right up there with the likes of Messi and Ronaldo judging by the forward’s eye-catching displays for Premier League outfit Liverpool so far in this calendar year, a 12 months in which the 26-year-old has at times been simply unplayable.

Number 3• Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)The flying Welsh wide man moved to los Blanco's last summer from Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur in a world-record transfer worth a staggering 100 million euros, however, the 24-year-old has not disappointed so far in his short time in La Lia, with Bale more than living up to his hefty price tag.

Number 2• Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)The powerful Portuguese appears to have now reached the top of his game at the Santiago Bernie, perhaps even finally being on a par with his great rival from Camp Noun, after four campaigns in the Spanish capital of the very highest quality, with the 28-year-old surely in with a great chance of adding to his one and only Ballon d’Or win back in 2008 at next month’s awards.

Number 1• Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona)The winner of four straight Fifer Ballon d’Or awards between 2009 and 2012 and the undisputed best player on the planet, the little Argentinian genius has been tearing up defences in La Lia for almost 10 years now, and he looks hungry to carry on destroying teams for another decade and more being just 26 years of age.
