ASEAN’S VERY FIRST MAKER HACKATHON. The rise of Maker culture has led to the increase of maker hackathons throughout the world, including the Southeast Asian region. The first ASEAN Makerthon will be a 3-day event during which, participants will be required to build physical prototypes in line with the theme, within a specific amount of time. The program will take place at the myMaker IoT Lab in the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (MCMC) headquarters in Cyberjaya, Selangor. Phase one will be the selection of finalist teams by each participating country. Phase two will be the Makerthon to be held in Malaysia. An outline of the selection process is summarised as follows: Phase 1 Interested teams are required to submit their applications to their respective country focal points not the organiser for the first screening process. The screening process and selection of finalist teams will be conducted by the respective countries, not the organiser. At the end of Phase 1, a maximum of two teams per participating country will be selected for the makerthon, which will be held in Malaysia. The finalist teams will be announced through the respective country focal points Phase 2 • The finalist teams will be required to physically attend and participate in the Makerthon in September 2017 Fellowships for ASEAN Teams In order to encourage participation and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ASEAN, the selected ASEAN teams will be provided with air ticket subsidies, return airport transfers, daily meals and accommodation. All submissions must adhere to the compulsory requirements All participants must be citizens of invited participating countries only. Participants must fully participate in all three (3) days of the event. Failure to do so may result in disqualification. Participants are required to bring their own Laptops and prototyping kits. (Both will not be provided at the event venue) Teams are given two (2) days to build their prototypes in line with the theme and scope Teams are required to bring their own laptops and prototyping kits (Embedded boards, sensors). Some parts will be available for sale during the event. The participants will be granted full access to MCMC’s myMaker IoT Lab throughout the event. The lab is equipped with: Master classes on maker- related skills will be conducted during the Makerthon. While it is not compulsory, it is highly recommended for participants to take part in these classes. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into regarding their decision. Compulsory Requirements: • All participants must be citizens of an invited participating country; • Each team shall consist of a minimum of two (2) participants and maximum of three (3) participants; • All participants must be a minimum of 18 years old; • All participants must be able to communicate in English (All submissions, documents and announcements in relation to the event will be in English only); • Must be currently enrolled in a University/College/ Vocational institutions within their respective countries (Participant’s level of study should be limited up to Graduate studies (Masters); • Knowledge of Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Basic Electrical and electronics. (Participants are required to bring their own Prototyping kits and Laptops). Preferred Requirements: • Has experience in being a “maker” by building projects; • Has experience in hackathons, mobile/app programming; • Experience in using Maker’s tools (Soldering Iron, 3D Printers, Laser Cutters, etc.); • Knowledge in IoT is an advantage.
