Version”

NARRATOR

Based on the characters and universe created by

Sony Entertainment and Naughty Dog, we bring you

Uncharted: The Hidden Kingdom – Part One.

NARRATOR

“On a lonely sword leaned he, like Arthur on

Excalibur in the battle by the sea…” G. K.

Chesterton

MUSIC: “Hidden Kingdom Main Theme Short Version” ends as boat

draws closer.

SFX: A boat’s motor approaching NATE

There’s nothing here, Sully.

CHLOE

So we crossed the Celtic Sea on a wild goose

chase? Nice one, Nate.

SULLY

Ah this one’s on me, Chloe.

NATE

Hey, I like not having to take any blame for

once.

ELENA

5

Yeah, well, we haven’t tried crossing any bridges

yet.

NATE What’s that supposed to mean?

SULLY

I don’t get it… we’re practically on top of the

coordinates.

NATE

The sun’s coming up and all I see is ocean. What

do you think, Elena?

ELENA

I don’t see anything either but…

NATE

But what?

ELENA

I don’t know. I feel — wait, do you hear that?

NATE

Kill the motor, Sully.

SFX: Boat motor rumbles to a stop. We hear waves crashing.

MUSIC: “Capsized Prologue Version” begins.

CHLOE

Sounds like… waves.

NATE

But there’s nothing here.

SFX: Waves crash closer, spray patters the deck.

ELENA Ok, I felt that!

NATE Me too! Where’s that spray coming from?

CHLOE

Can someone please explain how the boat’s

bouncing around when there’s not a single wave in

sight?!

SFX: Wave hits. Boat crashes against something. Voices react.

6

NATE

What the heck was that?

SULLY

Feels like we’ve run aground!

NATE

On what? There’s nothing here!

SULLY

He’s right! The oceans’ as flat as my wallet

after a long night in Havana!

NATE No! No! No! No! No!

SFX: Wave hits. Boat crashes. Shouts. Splintering. People

falling in the water. Flailing. Sputtering.

NATE (coughing to surface)

Elena! Elenaaaa!

MUSIC: “Capsized Prologue Version” ends and then transitions

into a string quartet at a garden party.

7

Scene 1: Garden Party

SFX: Voices mingling, glasses clinking.

MUSIC: Quartet continues.

NATE (a little loud)

Hey you reading me?

SULLY (“ear piece” voice)

I read you. Maybe keep your voice down so no one

thinks you got a bug in your ear.

NATE (under breath)

You know what I hate about fancy dinner parties?

SULLY

That you never get invited to any?

NATE (beat)

Yeah. (beat) I can’t believe your fake invite got

me through the gate.

SULLY

It wasn’t a fake.

NATE

You said you knew Faybridge. You didn’t say you

were friends.

SULLY

(grunts) A guy like Faybridge doesn’t have

friends. Stay focused.

SFX: A door opens. Busy kitchen sounds.

MUSIC: String quartet is cut off by door.

NATHAN

Relax. I’m through the servant’s entrance.

SULLY

Just nod and act like you belong there.

8

NATE (louder, talking to staff) Hello! Hey! Hi! How you doing? Yeah nice hair

net! Yeah it really ties the whole look together!

Oh hey smells good. Barley almond soup? Yeah,

keeps the body healthy!

SULLY Stop fooling around.

SFX: Slurping sound.

NATE (to staff)

Mmmm… Delicious.

SFX: Nate pats someone on the shoulder.

NATE (to staff)

Keep up the good work!

SULLY

Get serious, kid. Faybridge is dangerous.

NATE (under breath again)

So you keep telling me. (beat) How dangerous?

SULLY

Let’s just say he has a medieval way of lookin’

at things.

SFX: Door opens, shuts. Kitchen sounds muted and fade.

MUSIC: “Mansion Heist” begins.

NATE

(under breath) Was that supposed to be an answer?

(beat) I’m in the east hallway.

SFX: Nate’s footsteps clack softly on the tile.

SULLY

Remember, the guards --

NATE

-- are on a rotation, I know. So far, so good…

I’m at the door to the office. Electronic lock,

just like you said. Let’s hope your gizmo works.

9

SULLY Considerin’ what it cost me, it better.

SFX: Electronic gadget hums/beeps. Lock clicks.

NATE

Haha! I’m in.

SFX: Door opens.

NATE And you’re sure you disabled the alarm system?

SULLY

You hear any alarms going off?

NATE

Well, if you’re going to get rhetorical.

SULLY

Remember, we need the map --

NATE

-- Yeah and the scans. I know. Going downstairs.

SFX: Shuffling downstairs.

NATE

I’m at the second door.

SFX: Knuckle taps on wood. Solid sound.

NATE

Sounds thick.

SULLY

Six inches. Steel core.

SFX: Electronic gadget hums/beeps. Lock clicks.

NATE

(Chuckles) I gotta get me one of these.

SULLY

Well after this job, you can afford two!

SFX: Door opens. Low machine hum from air filtration system.

10

NATE

Brrr. It’s cold.

SULLY

The room’s temperature controlled.

NATE

Whoa… I feel like I was just tranported to the

Smithsonian. Armor, shields, broadswords. (Beat)

Here’s an illuminated manuscript that’s a dead

ringer for the Book of Kells. Elena would love

this --

SULLY

It is the Book of Kells. The one in Irelands’ a

copy.

NATE

How do you know?

SULLY

I helped Faybridge steal it. Still feel kinda bad

about that one. So when he asked me to help with

another little history project --

NATE

You decided to double-cross him.

SULLY

Eh, what can I say? I never liked the guy.

NATE

Man, these paintings and tapestries…

SULLY

Besides, the idea of a guy like Faybridge holdin’

Excalibur really chaps my --

NATE

Whoa, whoa, whoa… Holding what now? You said that

the map and the scans would lead us to priceless

“Arthurian artifacts.”

SULLY

A sword’s an artifact.

11

NATE The sword-in-the-stone Excalibur? The Lady-in-

the-Lake Excalibur? The Once-and-Future-King-

Excalibur? That Excalibur?

SULLY

No, the Excalibur that Melvin the Manager bought

at the Renaissance Faire for the dinner show at

Medieval Times.

NATE

That’s not funny. I(beat) Alright, it’s a little

funny, but I can’t believe you didn’t tell me we

were going after Exclaibur!

SULLY

I was worried you might overreact. Guess I was

wrong, huh?

NATE

OK, OK. Fair. (beat) I found the altar. There’s a

painting of two knights in a sword fight --

SULLY

That’s Arthur and Mordred.

NATE

-- bunch of rusted coins, gem-studded dagger,

parchments, and... ah bingo! An old wooden box.

SULLY

That's what we're after, kid! Inside should be a

steel cylinder and an envelope of x-rays.

NATE

X-rays? You said “scans.”

SULLY

Eh, tomato tomato. Technically, x-ray

fluorescence scans.

SFX: Creak of wood as the box lid is lifted.

NATE

Scans of what?

12

SULLY My colonoscopies. Tell you later. We’re on the

clock. Let’s go.

NATE

Got the cylinder. Hmm. It’s heavier than it

looks.

SULLY

It’s vacuum sealed. The map’s inside.

SFX: Steel lid twisted, air released.

SULLY

Now careful, Nate that map is about 1500 years

old.

NATE

Looks like it. (sniffs) Whoa. Smells like it too!

SFX: Steel lid twisting again.

SULLY

Ah, does the miraculously preserved document from

the early middle ages offend your delicate

sensibilities? Just grab the scans. Should be in

an envelope --

NATE

There’s no envelope.

SULLY

What?! It was there yesterday.

NATE

We have the map. We don’t need the scans.

SULLY

The map only tells you where the sword is. The

scans tell you how to survive once you get there.

NATE

We need the scans.

SFX: Footsteps approaching.

13

NATE (under breath) Hold on. I got company.

SFX: Steps closer.

GUARD #1

Mr. Faybridge…? Hey, who are -- ?

SFX: Punches, grunts, and a metallic thud.

SULLY

What was that?

NATE (out of breath)

A guard. Knocked him out with the cylinder.

SULLY

Get outta there, kid.

NATE

Way ahead of you.

SFX: Nate running up the stairs.

NATE

I’m in the east hall.

SFX: Nate walking fast across the tile.

SULLY

On my way. Pick you up at the south gate, end of

the gravel drive.

SFX: Door opens. Loud kitchen sounds.

NATE

Through the kitchen and...

SFX: Door opens. Garden party sounds.

MUSIC: Action theme ends as string quartet is heard again as

Nathan exits the house.

NATE Ta da! Alright I’m outside. Heading to the south

gate and-- Uh oh.

14

SULLY Don’t say uh oh. I hate when you say uh oh.

NATE

It’s Faybridge.

SULLY

Don’t let him see you, just get out of there!

NATE

I can’t. He’s talking to Elena.

SULLY (beat)

Wait… our Elena? What’s she doin’ here?

NATE

I don’t know, but --

SULLY

Don’t do anything stupid, kid.

NATE

He’ll think she was in on it.

SULLY

No, he won’t. You and Elena have been on and off

for a while. Mostly off.

NATE

I’m getting her out of here...

SULLY

Nate!(beat) Nate!

ELENA

Nate?

NATE (normal voice)

Hey, Elena. Uh, Mr. Faybridge, I presume?

FAYBRIDGE

The notorious Nathan Drake. I don’t remember

inviting you to my – What?! where did you get

that?

15

NATE Oh, this? Uh,funny story. I was hanging out in

your office when -- SFX: House alarm goes off. Metallic thud as Nate clocks

Faybridge with the cylinder. Guests react.

MUSIC: String quartet cuts out as the crowd gasps.

ELENA

Nate! Are you crazy? You know who that is?

MUSIC: “A Quick Exit” begins.

GUARDS

Hey! You! Don’t move!

NATE

That’s our cue.

ELENA

Let go of my hand!

SFX: Sounds of feet running on gravel.

NATE Go, go, go!

ELENA

Why are we running? What’s going on?

NATE

Almost to the street, Sully. You better --

SFX: Van screeches to a stop. Door slides open.

SULLY

Hey, Elena. Need a lift?

ELENA

I should have known. Where there’s one --

SFX: Gunshot punches into van. Elena reacts.

SULLY Get in! Both of ya!

16

NATE Get in!

SFX: Scrambling in. Door slides shut. Van peels out. Gunshots

shatter the van’s windows. Elena yelps.

MUSIC: “A Quick Exit” ends.

NATE

So, Elena, how’ve you been?

SFX: Van roars away.

17

Scene 2: Faybride’s Wrath

SFX: Several feet tromping downstairs. Guard’s radio crackles.

FAYBRIDGE

What else did he take?

GUARD #1

Are you all right, Mr. Faybridge? Your lip is

bleeding.

FAYBRIDGE

What else did he take?!

GUARD #1

Actually, we were going to ask you, sir. None of

us have been in this room before.

FAYBRIDGE

The altar appears undisturbed… except for the

missing cylinder. So they have the map. (beat)

Are you the one who found him?

GUARD #1

Yes, sir. I was making my rounds when I noticed

the office door slightly ajar and --

FAYBRIDGE

Let me rephrase. Are you the one who let him

escape?

GUARD #1 (beat)

Yes, sir.

FAYBRIDGE

Hmmm...

SFX: Metal blade drawn from its sheath.

FAYBRIDGE Don’t you think it’s strange that a thief would

leave a jeweled dagger like this behind?

GUARD #1

Yes, sir. I must have surprised him and --

SFX: Blade plunged into body. Guard gasps.

18

MUSIC: “Faybridge’s Wrath” begins at moment of stab.

FAYBRIDGE

This time it’s your shoulder. Fail me again and

I’ll cut out your heart. Understood?

GUARD #1 (wincing)

Yes, sir.

SFX: Dagger pulled from body. Guard reacts in pain.

FAYBRIDGE

Judgment administered. (Sighs) I feel better.

Don’t you?

GUARD #1 (struggling)

Yes, sir.

FAYBRIDGE

Finalize our preparations. I want to be in the

air by midnight.

GUARD #1

Sir.

SFX: Footsteps trailing away.

FAYBRIDGE

I hadn't planned on leaving until next week, Mr.

Drake. But you, that traitor Sully, and the

unfortunate Ms. Elena, have forced my hand. Now

judgment is coming. Judgment. Is. Coming.

MUSIC: “Faybridge’s Wrath” ends.

19

Scene 3: Meeting at the Airfield

SFX: Van driving.

ELENA

Wait. The Excalibur?

NATE

That’s what I said!

ELENA

Come on, Nate. Faybridge is a collector and a

philanthropist. He wanted to hire me to develop a

six-part series retelling the King Arthur legend

from Modred’s point of view. I turned him down. I

mean, most historians now agree that Arthur never

existed.

NATE

Wait. You don’t believe in King Arthur?

ELENA

Hey, I go with the evidence. And that’s what I

told Faybridge. But he was insistent. He wouldn’t

take no for an -- hold on, where are we? This is

an airfield.

SFX: Van braking. Van door opens. People climb out.

ELENA

I’m not getting on a plane. Especially that one.

Sully, why do all your planes look like props

from a World War II movie?

SULLY (chuckles)

Eh they’re always out of World War I biplanes. I

gotta take what I can get.

ELENA

Well, have a great flight. Give me the van keys.

SFX: Keys jangle as Sully holds them out.

NATE

I’ll take those.

SFX: Keys jangle again as Nate takes them.

20

ELENA Hey!

NATE

Listen, Elena --

ELENA

Keys, Nate.

SFX: Footsteps approaching.

CHLOE

Leaving so soon, sweetheart? I was hoping us

girls would have a chance to catch up.

ELENA

Chloe. Of course.

NATE

What’re you doing here?

CHLOE

Sully said you needed backup on this one.

SULLY

I keep telling you, Faybridge is dangerous.

ELENA

He’s a collector, Sully.

SULLY

How many collectors you know go around with their

own band of mercenaries? Trust me, Elena. I’ve

done a couple of jobs for Faybridge. He’s Belloq,

not Indiana. Now let’s see the map, kid.

SFX: Metal lid twisting. Sliding sound (map sliding out of metal

tube). Map crinkles, slowly unrolled.

MUSIC: “The Adventure Begins” begins.

SULLY

Be careful will ya, that map –

NATE

-- is 1500 years old. I know, dad.

21

SULLY

Hmpf...

ELENA

(gasp) Where did you get this? This looks… and

feels… authentic.

SULLY

Faybridge has been lookin’ for this map his whole

life. Here’s Ireland, Wales, France, and England.

Over here’s the Celtic Sea.

NATE

What’s this tiny island?

SULLY

Chloe, did you bring those charts?

SFX: Cell phone searching Google Earth.

CHLOE

Yeah, right here on my mobile. It’s called Google

Earth, old timer. The Isles of Scilly are here,

about 25 miles out. After that, there’s nothing

but open sea. I’m sorry, but if Google can’t find

your island, it doesn’t exist.

ELENA

There’s some writing here, but it’s too small.

NATE

See? You’re interested. You can’t resist

adventure any more than I can.

ELENA

I’m not getting on that plane, Nate.

SULLY

Hold on. I got an idea.

NATE

Now you’re using a cell phone?

SFX: More cell phone noises.

22

SULLY First we take a picture of the island. (beat)

It’s not taking a picture… Hang on, hang on…

Uhhh… got it! Apply a little digital zoom… Well,

what do you know! Looks like coordinates and a

name… Oh boy.

NATE

What’s it say?

SULLY (beat)

Avalon.

ELENA

That island is Avalon?

NATE

My King Arthur knowledge is a little rusty --

ELENA

Here’s the condensed version. King Arthur had an

affair with the sorceress, Morgan. Later, their

son Mordred tried to usurp Arthur. In the final

battle, Arthur killed Mordred, but not before

Mordred mortally wounded the King. In some of the

legends, Morgan took Arthur to the island of

Avalon where his wounds could be healed. In

others, the king died and was buried on Avalon

with his sword, Excalibur.

SULLY

Let’s see Google Earth again, Chloe. OK. Looks

like we fly to Plymouth… here. Take a boat to the

Isles of Scilly… here. Refuel, and head across

the Celtic Sea to these coordinates. I figure we

have an hour on Faybridge, maybe two.

ELENA

You don’t really expect to find Avalon?

CHLOE

Let’s go.

SULLY

I’ll go start the plane.

23

ELENA Nate. Come on. Avalon?

SFX: Keys jangle.

NATE

Here you go. See ya later!

SFX: Nate walks away. Plane props start in distance.

ELENA (calling)

Avalon? Really, Nate? King Arthur? Excalibur? The

Excalibur?

NATE (calling back)

Drive safe!

ELENA (beat) (Under breath)

Oh, I’m gonna regret this… Wait up! I’m coming with you!

SFX: Elena running.

NATE (laughing)

That’s my girl.

ELENA (defeatedly annoyed)

Shut up.

SFX: Plane louder. Engine revs.

MUSIC: “The Adventure Begins” ends.

24

Scene 4: Elena and Chloe

SFX: Inside the cabin of a plane. Engine muted.

ELENA

Look at them, Chloe. Sitting up there, pilot and

co-pilot, like a couple of boys pretending to be

treasure hunters.

CHLOE

Except these boys really are treasure hunters.

And so are you, Elena.

ELENA

I’m a journalist --

CHLOE

Yeah! A journalist who will go anywhere and will

risk anything for a good story.

ELENA

It’s not the same.

SFX: Distant burst of laughter from Nate and Sully.

ELENA

I swear, Nate wants to be doing this when he’s

Sully’s age.

CHLOE

And you don’t?

MUSIC: “Wanting More” begins.

ELENA

I love my job. I’m good at what I do. I just

think there are stages, you know? I want a family

someday. I want a quieter life someday. Don’t you

think about that?

CHLOE

Sure. But the way I see it, you can’t have

everything. Besides, in my line of work, planning

for the future doesn’t make a lot of sense.

ELENA

Nate should be with you, not me.

25

CHLOE (Laughing) Oh darling, we were a fling, that’s all. I mean

don’t get me wrong, it was a nice fling --

ELENA

Spare me the details.

CHLOE

You sure? There was this time in Mozambique

where...

(both laugh)

CHLOE

I’m just saying, give Nate a chance. He might

surprise you.

NATE (shouting across the plane)

Hey, girls! Sully brought pork rinds!

CHLOE

Then again…

(both laugh)

MUSIC: “Wanting More” ends.

26

Scene 5: Isles of Scilly

SFX: Water lapping, sea birds, mingled voices of a small port.

Fueling boat.

NATE

Ah, nothing like a relaxing boat ride. You see?

This is how I like adventures to go. Nice and

easy.

CHLOE

Hmmm… Too easy.

SULLY

What’s wrong, Chloe?

CHLOE

All the way from Plymouth to the Isles of Scilly

with no sign of Faybridge. It’s too easy.

NATE

Well, that’s the problem with being a double-

crossing, two-faced mercenary. It makes you

cynical.

CHLOE

Love you too. (beat) While you’re fueling up the

boat, I’m going to take a look around.

SFX: Footsteps on wood deck walking away.

NATE (calling after her)

You’re wasting your time! (beat) Was that a wave

or did she just give me the finger?

SULLY

Eh let her look around, kid. It’d be stupid to

underestimate Faybridge. He had a lotta people

and equipment to pull together, so yeah, maybe we

got lucky and picked up a day or two. But

still...

ELENA

I feel like you’re hiding something, Sully.

SULLY (chuckles)

Elena, honey, I’m an open book.

27

ELENA

No, there’s something you’re not telling us about

Faybridge.

NATE

Yeah, turn some pages, Mr. Open Book. We faced

dangerous people before. What’s so special about

Faybridge?

MUSIC: “A Little Backstory” begins.

SULLY

(Sighs)Over the years, I helped him build up his

collection. For a price, of course.

NATE

Of course.

SULLY

Well, about a week ago, I helped him… what’s the

word I’m looking for?

NATE

Acquire? (beat) Attain? (beat) Borrow?

ELENA

Steal?

SULLY

Steal! I helped him steal a rare painting by the

medieval artist Giotto di Bondone.

ELENA

Which painting?

SULLY

“Arthur Receives the Holy Spirit.” Arthur kneels

by a lake, a white dove descends from heaven, and

a hand rises out of the lake holdin’ Excalibur.

ELENA

I saw that painting at the Louvre last year.

NATE

Don’t tell me. The one in the Louvre is a fake

too!

28

ELENA Oh, Sully. I love that painting! (beat) What do

you mean “too”?

NATE This might not be the best time… and I know how

much you love the Book of Kells --

ELENA

The Book of Kells is a fake?

SULLY

Aw, the copy is just as good, Elena. Most

scholars can’t even tell the difference.

ELENA

Sully! I made a pilgrimage to the Book of Kells

when I was in college! Don’t you guys have any

respect for the sacred?

NATE

Hey, don’t paint me with the same brush. Unlike

some people, I don’t steal sacred stuff.

ELENA

Yeah? Then what are you doing here now?

NATE (beat)

OK, so paint me with the same brush, just not so

wide a brush.

ELENA

What are you talking about?

NATE

I don’t know, I just --

SULLY

Can we get back to Faybridge?

NATE

Please.

29

SULLY Ok. Three days ago, Faybridge invites me to his

mansion. Takes me downstairs to his uh… “sanctum

sanctorum.” Shows me the painting all framed and

lit-up. Turns out, the painting is a kind of

uh(sighs), pali um… palum, pallid --

NATE

Pamphlet?

SULLY

Yeah, cause they had pamphlets in the middle

ages.

ELENA

Palimpsest?

SULLY

That’s the one!

NATE

Now you’re just making words up.

ELENA

In the old days, parchment and canvas were made

out of animal skins. But it was expensive. So

sometimes they’d reuse the parchment by scraping

the words off. It’s called a palimsest. With

paintings, they’d just do a new painting over the

old one. It was also a great way to hide

information you didn’t want just anyone to see.

SULLY

Bingo!

NATE

So Faybridge learns about the painting, has it

scanned --

SULLY

-- and discovers a secret document that reveals

the location of the map.

ELENA

Which was where exactly?

30

SULLY Ah, there’s a little church in Cornwall, Wales.

The church was built on the ruins of an old

castle. The castle was built on a graveyard and -

-

NATE

And the dish ran away with the spoon. We get it.

SULLY (chuckles)

So Faybridge gets the map which, we now know,

tells him how to find Avalon. But that secret

document revealed a lot more than the map’s

location. According to Faybridge, it was written

by Morgan le Fay herself. He starts telling me

about how Morgan was this uh, powerful witch --

ELENA

Morgan was a sorceress and a scientist. She was

ahead of her time.

SULLY

Well, she must have been a looker too, because

Arthur betrays Guinevere to shack up with her.

ELENA

Nice.

SULLY

Well one thing leads to another and they have an

illegitimate son, Mordred. Years later, Mordred

tries to take over and Arthur kills him in

battle, but not before being mortally wounded

himself. Mordred had three sons. Sir Bors kills

one, Sir Lancelot kills another. But the middle

son escapes. According to Faybridge, that

bloodline continues to this day.

MUSIC: “A Little Backstory” ends.

NATE

Whoa! Hold on. Faybridge thinks he the direct

descendent of Mordred?

ELENA

You’ve got to be kidding me.

31

SULLY He thinks it’s all real. Arthur, Morgan, Mordred,

Avalon, the Sword, all of it… Oh crap. I thought

we were gonna take turns keepin’ watch?

NATE

Actually, that was Chloe’s idea.

SFX: Many footsteps approach.

MUSIC: “Island Meet & Greet” begins.

FAYBRIDGE

Well, well, well, if it isn’t our little band of

party crashers. Hands up, please.

SFX: Guns cocking.

NATE

Come on, Faybridge. You’re not going to shoot us

in broad daylight.

FAYBRIDGE

We’re on an island on the edge of nowhere. I’ve

already bribed the local authorities and you’re

thieves. So yes, I’m going to shoot you in broad

daylight.

ELENA

You know Faybridge, you left out a few things

about your documentary.

FAYBRIDGE

Did I now?

ELENA

I couldn’t figure out why you were so passionate

about it, but now I understand... Mordred’s side of

the story is your side of the story.

FAYBRIDGE

(Chuckles) Dear Elena, it pains me to see the

company you’ve chosen.

NATE

She wasn’t part of this. I swear.

32

FAYBRIDGE (Chuckles) Well, if you swear...

ELENA

You really believe you’re the direct descendant

of Modred?

FAYBRIDGE

It’s not belief, Elena. It’s a fact. Mordred’s

blood runs in my veins. I have documents passed

down generation to generation. I have artifacts

collected across centuries. For over a thousand

years, my ancestors have searched for the map.

But only I was deemed worthy to find it.

NATE

I’d say that had more to do with modern

technology than your worthiness.

FAYBRIDGE

What would a thief-for-hire know about destiny? I

was finally ready to fulfill my family’s quest.

Unfortunately, in my zeal I made one mistake: I

trusted Victor here. I assumed the man who helped

me steal the painting could help me steal the

rest.

SULLY

An’ you were right. Technically.

FAYBRIDGE

Except you stole from me instead of for me.

NATE

Well, you can’t have everything.

33

FAYBRIDGE But I do have everything, Mr. Drake. I know how

to get safely to Avalon. You don’t. I know how to

find Excalibur without getting wounded. You

don’t. And I know where Arthur lies entombed,

waiting for the prophecy of his return to be

fulfilled. Oh, a king will return from Avalon.

But it won’t be Arthur. I will claim my destiny

and change the course of the world. In fact,

let’s start with you three. Give me the map. I

don’t need it, of course. These past few days,

I’ve stared so long at it’s cracked surface, I’ve

memorized every detail. But the map belongs to my

family -- what?

SFX: Gun clicking.

CHLOE

You guys really should watch your back.

NATE

Chloe, I will never say another word about you

being a double-crossing, two-faced mercenary.

CHLOE

Oh you’re too kind… Guns down, boys.

SFX: Faybridge grunts as Chloe thrusts the gun into his back.

FAYBRIDGE

You shoot me and you’re all dead.

CHLOE

Ooh. I love an ultimatum. On three, shall we?

FAYBRIDGE

You’re bluffing.

CHLOE

All we have to lose is our lives. You’ll lose

1500 years of “destiny.” One…

FAYBRIDGE Maybe we can negotiate --

CHLOE

Two…

34

NATE All in favor of negotiating raise your hand!

CHLOE

Thr --

FAYBRIDGE

All right!

CHLOE

Guns in the water!

MUSIC: “Island Meet & Greet” ends.

FAYBRIDGE Do it.

SFX: Several guns splash in the water.

CHLOE

Your men look hot and sweaty, Faybridge.

FAYBRIDGE (growls)

Into the water. Now!

SFX: Bigger splashes as men jump in.

CHLOE

Start swimming, boys!

SFX: Men splashing away.

SULLY

Nice work, Chloe. Now, where are the scans,

Faybridge?

NATE

And by “scans,” he means the scans of the pali,

palum, pallid --

ELENA

Palimpsest?

NATE

Yeah that’s the one!

SFX: Hands slapping pockets.

35

FAYBRIDGE

You think I’d carry something so valuable around

in my pocket?

SULLY

Ah crap. Let’s go.

CHLOE

Your turn, Faybridge. Into the water.

MUSIC: “Loyalty” begins.

FAYBRIDGE

May I look into your eyes first? (beat) Well, you

really weren’t bluffing, were you? I could use a

woman like you.

CHLOE

“Use” being the operative word.

FAYBRIDGE

I’ll make you head of security. 7-figure salary.

And a place in the new order when I come into my

power.

CHLOE

Normally I’d take that offer knowing I was just

going to double-cross you. So I’m going to save

us all a lot of trouble and count to three again.

One… Two...

FAYBRIDGE (chuckles)

Until next time...

SFX: Faybridge jumps into the water and swims.

MUSIC: “Loyalty” ends.

SULLY

We better get going.

CHLOE

If we were really smart, we’d shoot him now.

ELENA

Yeah we’re not that smart! Thanks, Chloe.

36

NATE Hey! Don’t I get a hug?

CHLOE

For what?

NATE

For... letting them sneak up on us and giving you

the opportunity to be a hero.

SFX: Boat motor starts.

MUSIC: “In Pursuit” begins.

SULLY: Stop wasting time kid -- let’s go!

SFX: Sounds of feet running on dock. Boat pulls away.

SFX: After a moment, splashing as men swim back. Climbing on

dock. Out of breath. Water dripping.

SULLY:

Alright! Shake yourselves off, get to the truck,

get your gear together, and let’s get after them!

Double-time come-on!

SFX: Goons preparing for pursuit.

FAYBRIDGE

Let them go. They may have the map, but without

the information in the scans, they’ll die

following it...

MUSIC: “In Pursuit” ends.

37

Scene 6: Avalon

(Note: This repeats from the Teaser.)

NATE

There’s nothing here, Sully.

CHLOE

So we crossed the Celtic Sea on a wild goose

chase? Nice one, Nate.

SULLY

Ah this one’s on me, Chloe.

NATE Hey, I like not having to take any blame for

once.

ELENA

Yeah, well, we haven’t tried crossing any bridges

yet.

NATE

What’s that supposed to mean?

SULLY

I don’t get it… we’re practically on top of the

coordinates.

NATE

The sun’s coming up and all I see is ocean. What

do you think, Elena?

ELENA

I don’t see anything either but…

NATE

But what?

ELENA

I don’t know. I feel — wait, do you hear that?

NATE

Kill the motor, Sully.

SFX: Boat motor rumbles to a stop. We hear waves crashing.

38

MUSIC: “Capsized” begins.

CHLOE

Sounds like… waves.

NATE

But there’s nothing here.

SFX: Waves crash closer, spray patters the deck.

ELENA

Ok, I felt that! NATE

Me too! Where’s that spray coming from?

CHLOE

Can someone please explain how the boat’s

bouncing around when there’s not a single wave in

sight?!

SFX: Wave hits. Boat crashes against something. Voices react.

NATE

What the heck was that?

SULLY

Feels like we’ve run aground!

NATE

On what? There’s nothing here!

SULLY

He’s right! The oceans’ as flat as my wallet

after a long night in Havana!

NATE No! No! No! No! No!

SFX: Wave hits. Boat crashes. Shouts. Splintering. People

falling in the water. Flailing. Sputtering.

NATE (coughing to surface)

Elena! Elenaaaa!

SFX: We hear him shouting while someone is underwater.

39

ELENA Nate! Over here! I have Chloe.

SFX: Waves and splashing throughout.

NATE What happened?

ELENA

Hit her head on the rail. Went under like a

stone. I barely got her.

NATE

I’ll take her.

ELENA

Here comes Sully.

NATE

Oh thank God!

SULLY

You guys OK?

ELENA

Now what?

NATE

Look at the boat!

SFX: Boat crashing, breaking apart.

SULLY

It’s breaking up! I swear it’s like she’s run

aground!

NATE

Swim for it!

SFX: Swimming, waves crashing on shore.

ELENA

I feel sand!

NATE

Me too. Keep going!

40

ELENA What the –

NATE

What?

ELENA

Look!

NATE

An island!

ELENA

I could see it as soon as my feet touched the

ground!

SULLY

Stop gawkin’! Let’s get out of these waves!

SFX: Feet in sand. Sound of waves diminishing. Bodies plop in

sand. Cloth tearing. Heavy breathing. Coughing.

MUSIC: “Capsized” morphs into “The Forgotten Island.”

NATE I just swallowed a starfish…

ELENA

Here, use this to bandage Chloe’s head.

SULLY

That’s a nasty cut.

NATE I swallowed a gallon or two…

SFX: Chloe coughing, waking.

ELENA

Chloe. You OK?

CHLOE

What happened?

SULLY

We crashed, that’s what happened. You went under

and Elena fished you out.

41

CHLOE Thanks. I guess we’re even.

NATE We didn’t just crash. We crashed on Avalon.

ELENA

In some of the legends, Morgan used a spell to

make the island invisible.

NATE

An invisible island. I wouldn’t have believed it

if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes.

SULLY (chuckles)

Or uh, not seen it, as the case may be.

ELENA

Look at the trees. The cliffs. It’s beautiful.

This island is impossible. Historically, it could

be one of the most significant --

CHLOE

I’m glad you’re feeling like you’re back at

school, Elena. But we need to get practical. What

do we do now?

SULLY

Well, without a boat we either grow old and die

on Avalon, or wait for Faybridge to get here and

kill us.

ELENA

Some treasure hunters you are.

NATE

You have a better idea?

ELENA

We’re on Avalon, people. Let’s go find Excalibur!

NATE

(beat) OK, yeah, that’s a better idea.

SULLY, CHLOE

Yeah. Not bad. Good one, Elena. (Grunts as she

stands up) Let’s go.

42

SFX: People walking on sand, waves.

(Nate chuckles)

ELENA

What’s so funny?

NATE

I thought you didn’t believe in King Arthur.

ELENA (More insistent/annoyed than the last time)

Shut up!

(Nate laughs)

NARRATOR

“… but these doubt if the King be King at all,

and whether this be built by magic…” Tennyson, Idylls of the King

MUSIC: “Hidden Kingdom Main Theme Short Version” ends.

SFX: Waves in the background. Sounds of trudging in sand.

ELENA (deep breath)

Is it just me, or does everything feel, I don’t

know... pure?

NATE

No, it’s just you, Elena. (beat, grunt) I hate

walking in sand.

ELENA

Come on, Nate. The sand is as white as paper. The

cliffs? Solid black. Those trees on the ridge...

have you ever seen such deep green? I mean this

place, its… its almost too perfect.

CHLOE

Ah, Elena, darling, sometimes your optimism is

endearing.

5

SULLY Yeah, but this ain’t one of those times. We’re in

a bit of a pickle here.

ELENA (chuckle)

Sorry, Sully.

MUSIC: “The Wreckage” begins.

NATE

Hey, check that out, down by the rocks.

CHLOE

Looks like the remains of a ship.

SULLY

Judging by the looks of it I’d say that’s an old

British frigate.

NATE

Watch your language, young man.

CHLOE

There’s more wreckage.

SULLY

Call me crazy, but that looks like a 16th-century

galleon. I mean it’s rotted down to the ribs, but

you can still tell. My moneys on pirates.

ELENA

So we’re not the first ones stranded on Avalon?

SULLY

Well, nowadays we’re too far off any shippin’

lanes. No one comes out here anymore. But back in

the old days --

CHLOE

I wonder if we could find any guns or weapons

down there.

NATE (chuckles)

What do you want to shoot some ghosts, or do you

think the great-great-great-grandkids of Jack

Sparrow are running around somewhere on Avalon?

6

MUSIC: “The Wreckage” ends.

CHLOE

Actually, I was thinking of a certain psychopath

who is hot on our trail and intent on killing us,

but at this point, I’d say anything is possible.

NATE

See? That’s the problem with being a double-

crossing --

CHLOE

Ah-ah-ah. You promised.

(Nate grumbles)

SULLY

Well, ghosts, castaways or enemies, we need a

vantage point. Don't want to be caught with our

trousers down like we were in the village.

CHLOE

Speak for yourself.

SULLY

I’m never gonna hear the end of that, am I?

CHLOE

Not if I have anything to say about it.

ELENA

Hey, guys… I think there’s a way up the cliff

over there. See those stones jutting out at weird

angles? Depending on how you look at it, it’s

almost like a set of stairs.

NATE

Nice one, Elena! We just may have to keep you

around.

ELENA

Ha, ha, ha...

SFX: Sounds of feet in sand gives way to feet scuffing on

rocks.

7

NATE (singing under breath)

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,

a tale of a fateful trip…

SULLY

Stow that, little buddy.

NATE

Aye-aye, Skipper.

CHLOE

Unbelievable.

SFX: Footsteps fade out.

8

Scene 2: The Cliffs

SFX: Wind buffeting, footsteps on dirt, heavy breathing.

NATE

Well, that’s my cardio for the week.

SULLY

Mine for the month.

ELENA

You can see the whole island from up here.

SULLY

Yeah, it’s a nice view and all, but we can’t just

sit here lookin’ at it. We need to find that

sword before Faybridge shows up. Let’s keep

movin’.

SFX: Footsteps pick up the pace.

CHLOE

This island can’t be more than a quarter-mile

across.

ELENA

It’s so beautiful.

SULLY

Eh, not the word I’d use.

NATE

What do you mean, Sully?

SULLY

Whadda ya mean what do I mean? Look at it! Looks

like a freakin’ English garden. It’s… what’s the

word I’m looking for?

ELENA

Unnatural?

SULLY

No, no…

ELENA

Abnormal?

9

SULLY

No, not that either…

NATE

Weird?

SULLY

That’s it!

(Nate and Sully chuckle)

ELENA (Sighs)

NATE

Got’cha, smarty pants.

ELENA

Chloe, shoot them for me. Please.

CHLOE

Sorry, sweetheart, I don’t have a gun. Besides,

you walked right into that one.

SULLY

No sign of Chloe’s pirate family.

NATE

Maybe we should split up. Search twice as fast.

SULLY (beat)

Don’t think that’ll be necessary, kid.

NATE

Why not?

SULLY

Look.

NATE

I am looking.

SULLY

Look where I’m pointin’.

10

MUSIC: “Statues” begins.

NATE Oh. (beat) Oh!

ELENA

How is that even possible? Those statues have to

be a hundred feet tall.

CHLOE

Carved right out of the cliff. Handsome devils.

NATE

There’s a cave. Looks like they’re guarding --

ELENA (overlapping on “guarding”)

-- welcoming --

NATE

(beat) Did you say welcoming?

ELENA

They look welcoming to me.

NATE

You see a pair of giant statues holding swords

and you think they’re the welcome party?

SULLY (chuckles)

TomAto, tomato. Let’s get down there and scope it

out while we have the chance.

SFX: Feet moving down a rocky slope.

ELENA

I’m just saying, they don’t look dangerous.

NATE

Did I mention they’re holding swords?

ELENA

The swords are pointed down, Nate.

CHLOE (Calling back)

Come on, lovebirds.

11

NATE The point isn’t that they’re pointed down. The

point is that they’re… pointed.

MUSIC: “Statues” ends.

SFX: Footsteps trailing away.

12

Scene 3: The Cave

SFX: Footsteps on dirt, occasional sound of wind moaning through

the cave.

NATE (out of breath)

The cave didn’t look this big from up on the

hill. You could drive a tank through here.

SFX: Low howl of wind rises, falls.

SULLY

Ooh, I don’t like the sound of that wind.

CHLOE

I do. Wind means there’s another way out.

SULLY

And another way in.

CHLOE

Touche.

ELENA

What’re we waiting for? Let’s go —

NATE, SULLY, CHLOE

Whoa, hold on, wait a second!

ELENA

What?

NATE

What? What do you mean What? Booby traps, Elena!

There are always booby traps.

SULLY

Yeah, remember that falling statue in Prague?

NATE

Alright, technically that wasn’t a booby —

CHLOE

Or the spikes in the Valley of Temples?

NATE

OK, that was a booby —

13

SULLY (chuckling)

Or how ‘bout that hive of bullet ants in

Nicaragua?

NATE

Come on! That was not a booby —

ELENA

Would you just stop saying “booby”? (beat) So

what do we do, just sit here?

SULLY

She’s right. Don’t have a lot of options --

CHLOE

And Faybridge is on his way —

SULLY

So let’s just take this real slow...

SFX: Feet walking. Ambient sound changes, chamber/cave-like.

Dripping water. Low moan of wind comes and goes.

MUSIC: “False Floors” begins.

ELENA

(gasp) What happened here?

NATE

I hate when I’m right.

CHLOE

That’s a lot of skeletons.

SULLY

Looks like this entrance is paved with false

floors. They stepped on the wrong spot, their

feet fell through, and uh, goodnight Irene.

ELENA

Are those… spikes?

SFX: Creaking sound as Chloe moves the bones.

CHLOE

I think I can get this guy loose...

14

ELENA (chuckles)

That’s disgusting, Chloe!

CHLOE

The spikes are metal, and they go right through

the fibula...

SFX: Bones breaking.

CHLOE

There!

NATE, ELENA

Oh! Ack! Gross!

CHLOE

Here, Nate. Be a sweetheart and toss him out of

the way, will you?

SFX: Bones crash in a pile as Chloe throws them.

NATE

Aw, man… Why do I get all the dirty jobs?

SFX: Bones rattling.

MUSIC: “False Floors” ends.

SFX: Trap sounds throughout this dialog.

CHLOE

Sully, look at this. It’s just a hinged door. You

step through, your foot hits this lever, and, if

I had to guess, your own weight causes the spikes

to thrust out on each side. Then they (grunt)

lock in place somehow. Nasty…

SULLY (chuckles)

Clever. (beat) You want to reset it, don’t you?

CHLOE (chuckles)

Make a nice welcome mat for Faybridge.

(straining) But I can’t figure out how to reset

these (grunts) frigging spikes...

15

SULLY Hmm. Maybe they have to click forward all the

way, you know, like vise-grip pliers.

CHLOE

That would be pretty diabolical. Then your own

leg would stand between you and freedom.

SULLY

Eh, sounds medieval to me. You already cleared

the bones out of there. Give it a try.

CHLOE

If this works… (beat) OK. The spikes extend

forward easy enough…

SFX: Low “click.”

SULLY (chuckles)

Now we just push them back the other way, lock

‘em in place…

SFX: Creaking, then a dull “thunk.”

SULLY (straining)

There!

CHLOE

You were right. (beat) Hey, Nate. Sully was right

about something!

NATE

You’re kidding? Our Sully?

SULLY

I get no respect.

CHLOE

Now we lift the little trapdoor back up, sprinkle

some dirt over the area...

SFX: Click as door snaps in place. Dirt smoothed over.

ELENA

That’s amazing, Chloe. I can’t see it at all.

16

SULLY From my count, looks like eight more traps were

sprung —

NATE

That we can see.

SULLY Good point. For all we know, this whole entrance

is covered with these things.

CHLOE

I say we reset them all.

ELENA

Then how do we get across?

NATE

You guys get started on the traps. Elena and I

will hike back to that pirate ship, see if we can

get some planks. Maybe we can lay them down --

SULLY

And walk right across. Not bad, kid.

NATE

Shall we, Elena?

ELENA

Anything is better than watching Chloe break —

SFX: Breaking bones.

NATE, ELENA

Aw! Oh!

SULLY, CHLOE

(laughing)

SFX: The laughter fades.

17

Scene 4: Nate and Elena

SFX: Waves fade back, feet trudging on dirt. Wind rises. Nate

and Elena sound winded from carrying the planks.

ELENA

These things are heavy. Can we rest a minute?

NATE

Let’s just get to the top of the cliff…

SFX: More steps. Heavy wood boards dropped.

ELENA

You think two planks are enough?

NATE

I think two is all we can carry. (beat) Look at

you.

ELENA

What?

NATE

Nothing. You just look… you know, happy.

ELENA

I don’t -- I wouldn’t say “happy.”

NATE

Come on, why won’t you admit it?

ELENA

Admit what?

NATE

That you love this. The danger, the adventure.

How many times have we been in bad situations

like this? We always come through and --

ELENA

OK, yes. I do. I love it. I just… (beat) There

are stages, Nate.

NATE

Stages?

18

ELENA Stages in life.

NATE

Sure. Of course. Uh,stages.

ELENA

You know what I’m talking about, right?

NATE

You’re talking about stages. And how… life has

stages. And we have stages and… I don’t know what

you’re --

ELENA

The adventures we’ve had, I wouldn’t trade them

for anything. But life has stages. I want more

than -- agghh why is this so hard? This isn’t the

only thing I care about.

NATE (beat)

Ow.

MUSIC: “Life Has Stages” begins.

ELENA

Sorry, I didn’t mean —

NATE

No, I get it. A treasure hunter isn’t exactly

long-term relationship material.

ELENA

I just love other things, you know?

NATE

You mean you want other things.

ELENA

Yeah.

NATE

I want those things too, Elena.

ELENA

Nate –

19

NATE After all the time we’ve spent together, you

gotta know me better than --

ELENA

Come on, Nate —

NATE

I’m serious —

ELENA

You don’t have to say —

NATE

You think I want to be messing with booby traps

when I’m Sully’s age?

ELENA

Really, you have to stop saying “booby.”

NATE

Look, I love Sully. But he’s 50 years old and

he’s got no one.

ELENA

He’s got you.

NATE

You know what I mean.

ELENA

Can we talk about this later?

NATE

Yeah. Yeah, sure. But I want it noted that I, the

guy, wanted to have the “relationship talk,” and

you, the gal, didn’t want to talk about it.

ELENA

The “gal?”

NATE

Hey, I’m spitballing here.

SFX: Elena picks up end of planks.

20

ELENA (grunting) Let’s get back to the cave. (beat) Are you going

to help?

SFX: Nate picks up other end of planks.

NATE (grunting)

Fine, but remember — ow!

ELENA

What happened?

NATE (beat)

I got a splinter.

ELENA

Oh Nate! We’re in big trouble now!

NATE

I mean it’s not that bad.

ELENA

No. Look! A boat.

NATE (beat)

Faybridge! Looks like he’s got a small army on

deck.

ELENA

If we can see them, they can see us. Why aren’t

they shooting?

NATE

Because he can’t see us. We’re invisible,

remember? Come on. We don’t have a lot of time.

SFX: Footsteps moving fast, wind rising.

MUSIC: “Life Has Stages” morphs into “Faybridge’s Theme” as the

next scene begins.

21

Scene 5: Faybridge

SFX: Boat motor, waves crashing.

HEAD MERCENARY

We’re almost to the coordinates, sir. The men

are… concerned.

FAYBRIDGE

(chuckles) They should be more than concerned.

We’re approaching Avalon, hidden by magic for 15

centuries. They should be scared. This is where

the known and unknown overlap.

HEAD MERCENARY

Yes, sir.

FAYBRIDGE

Make sure we approach from the northwest.

According to my scans, there’s a small bay where

we can avoid the rocks. We’ll anchor there and

row across. (chuckles) Like the pirates of old.

HEAD MERCENARY

And what about Drake and Sullivan?

FAYBRIDGE

They’re probably dead already.

HEAD MERCENARY

And if they’re not?

FAYBRIDGE

You know I hate rhetorical questions.

HEAD MERCENARY

Yes, sir —

FAYBRIDGE

See to the landing.

HEAD MERCENARY

Yes, sir.

SFX: Footsteps walking away.

22

FAYBRIDGE After all these years, I will finally fulfill my

family’s destiny. Mr. Drake and that traitorous

Sully will be the first to face judgment.

(laughter)

SFX: Waves rise, crashing with his laughter.

MUSIC: “Faybrodge’s Theme” ends.

23

Scene 6: The Lady of the Lake

SFX: Footsteps, huffing and puffing.

SULLY

Took you long enough. Been gone two hours.

NATE (out of breath)

You try carrying… planks from a pirate ship… over

a cliff wall… on an invisible island…

SFX: Planks dropped.

ELENA (less out of breath)

Faybridge is here… We saw his ship…

SULLY

Then we better move our butts. He could show up

at any time.

NATE (less out of breath)

Wow, you guys did a great job. I can’t even tell

there are any boo — er traps here.

SULLY

Won’t be good enough to fool Faybridge. He’s got

the scans. Those documents are like a cheat sheet

to this place.

CHLOE

(sighs) Then why, may I ask, did we do all this

work?

SULLY

Well maybe some of the men will get careless.

It’s worth a shot.

ELENA

What’d you do with all the skeletons?

CHLOE

Laid them to rest in the bushes outside.

SULLY (grunt)

Come on, kid. Help me slide this plank across the

ground.

24

SFX: Grunts, heavy wood plank sliding on dirt.

SULLY

I’ll go first. Just hang back…

SFX: Careful steps on wood.

SULLY

Feels like I’m crossin’ a minefield…

SFX: Steps stop.

SULLY (big breath)

Looks like this is gonna work. Hey, slide the

other plank over and I’ll push it ahead. I think

we can make it to that ledge of rocks.

SFX: Low grunts, wood plank sliding.

SULLY

OK, folks, let’s go.

SFX: Footsteps as others cross the planks.

CHLOE

This ledge continues deeper into the cave.

NATE

You and Elena keep going. Sully and I will pull

the planks across, then scatter some dirt to

disguise our little trap.

CHLOE

Look at you, a man with a plan. Come on, Elena.

SFX: Sound of shoes scuffing, movement.

ELENA

Um, Chloe? You have more experience with this

kind of thing, but shouldn’t a cave get darker

the deeper we go?

CHLOE

Yeah I was thinking the same thing.

SFX: Sound of water splashing softly.

25

ELENA You hear that…?

MUSIC: “Lady of the Lake” begins.

CHLOE

I don’t just hear it. I see it.

ELENA

What do you… (gasp). Is this a (beat) freshwater

lake? Look at that hole in the roof of the cave.

It’s a perfect circle. That can’t be natural.

CHLOE

Nothing here is natural sweetheart. Case in

point: those little streams pouring out of the

cave wall. Where’s all that water coming from?

ELENA

Well, as I said, Morgan was a very intelligent

woman. Maybe she built a pump system that cycles

the water from the lake to the streams. (laughs)

Or maybe it’s just magic!

CHLOE

You’re loving this, aren’t you?

ELENA

What? No, I mean — Why does everyone keep —

CHLOE (whispered)

Hold on! Someone’s here.

ELENA (whispered)

What? Where?

CHLOE (whispered)

In the shadows, in front of the lake.

SFX: Shoes scuffing.

NATE (loud)

Hey, there’s a pond in here!

ELENA

Shhhh!

26

CHLOE (whispered) Someone’s here.

SULLY (low)

Looks like a woman.

NATE (low)

Why is she just standing there?

(beat)

SULLY (chuckles)

‘Cause that’s what statues do.

CHLOE (laughs)

Well, don’t I feel stupid? Oh wait, that’s your

line, isn’t it, Nate?

NATE

Haaa… Funny.

SFX: Boot tapping the ground.

SULLY

The ground seems solid enough. Come on.

MUSIC: “Lady of the Lake” ends.

NATE

And let’s keep an eye out for Faybridge this

time.

SULLY

Good point.

SFX: Footsteps.

NATE

She looks almost alive. (beat) Hey! Is anyone

else getting this? She’s a lady…? There’s a

lake…? I mean, come on! It’s gotta be… Right?

SULLY

Can’t tell if she’s made of marble or metal. Look

at the detail!

27

NATE What’s up with her hands? I mean, it’s like she’s

saying come closer and stop at the same time?

SULLY (chuckles)

Women.

ELENA

Nice.

CHLOE

I like her sense of fashion. Looks like medieval

body armor.

ELENA

Are her eyes glass? It’s like looking into a deep

well. And I swear there’s a light down there.

CHLOE

I’d say that’s impossible, but why bother?

NATE

Let me see. (beat) OK, that’s creepy.

SULLY

Ok everyone back up, back up.

SFX: Feet shuffling back.

SULLY

Look on the ground in front of her. There’s words

carved in the stone.

NATE

What language is that?

ELENA

I think it’s Old English.

NATE

That’s English? Looks like gibberish.

CHLOE

Anyone got a PhD in linguistics?

28

NATE I don’t think getting closer to it is going to

help, Elena.

ELENA (chuckles in wonder)

This is amazing! When I touch the words, I can

understand them.

NATE What?

SFX: Scuffing as Nate kneels.

NATE

She’s right. Wow.

SULLY

Well, that’s convenient. What’s it say?

ELENA

“If you are certain of your soul, step up.

Eye to eye, hand to hand, declare your worth.”

NATE

What does it mean? Worthy how? Worthy of what?

CHLOE

Is it talking about chivalry? Honor? Knightly

virtues?

SULLY

Maybe it’s a riddle.

CHLOE

Maybe it’s a trap.

ELENA

I think it’s instructions. You stand in front of

her, look into her eyes, place your hand against

her hand, and say, “I am worthy.”

CHLOE

You’re kidding?

SULLY

Huh… I’m game. All right, back up. Let’s try

this.

29

NATE Whoa! Whoa, whoa, whoa…! What if Chloe’s right

and it’s a trap?

SULLY

You have a better idea? Faybridge has probably

landed by now. (beat) OK… look into her eyes...

Crap, there is a light down there.

CHLOE

I don’t like this.

SULLY

Her hand feels almost… warm. OK, here goes

nothing. (beat) I am worthy.

SFX: Sound of metal like Wolverine’s claws.

MUSIC: “Faybridge’s Wrath” variation begins.

SULLY

Argh!

SFX: Everyone gasps

CHLOE

Sully!

ELENA

He’s hurt!

SFX: Sully thuds to his knees.

NATE

Sully! What is it?

SULLY

What do you think it is, it’s my hand...

ELENA

That’s a lot of blood!

CHLOE

Here. Take my bandage.

SULLY

Something shot out of her hand —

30

NATE

Hold still. Looks like a railroad spike punched

through your palm.

SULLY (through gritted teeth)

Eh, not the first time I didn’t measure up to a

woman’s expectations.

CHLOE

So, what now?

SULLY

We’re gonna have to try something before

Faybridge gets here. That, or hide.

CHLOE

I’m not a big fan of hiding, but in this case –

SULLY

Maybe we can tell him to stick his head on her

hand and say it.

NATE

Maybe we can take the statue apart.

CHLOE (beat)

Elena, what are you doing?

MUSIC: “Faybridge’s Wrath” variation morphs into “I Am

Worthy”.

ELENA

You heard Sully. We have to do something.

NATE

Elena! Get away from there!

ELENA

Her hand does feels warm. How is that possible?

NATE

Elena, hold on now, let’s --

ELENA

Here goes.

31

NATE Elena!

ELENA

I am worthy.

SFX: A beat of silence, then a series of gears turn and an odd

bell sounds.

CHLOE (under breath)

Of course she did. St. Elena.

ELENA (releases big breath)

I feel faint all of the sudden.

NATE

Come here. I can’t believe you did that.

SFX: Metallic gears, clicking, folding.

CHLOE

Look at the other hand! The fingers are twisting

and retracting--

SULLY

What is that? A handle of some kind?

CHLOE

That’s not a handle. It’s the hilt of a sword.

(beat)

NATE

You don’t think it’s…?

CHLOE

What else? Elena, would you do the honors?

NATE

Be careful.

SFX: Sword sliding out of metallic sheath.

SULLY

We’ll, I’ll be...

32

CHLOE Blimey! The arm’s like a sheath of some sort!

NATE

So… just to make sure we’re all on the same page,

Elena is holding Excalibur right now. Right?

SFX: Loud rumble as wall slides open.

CHLOE

What’s going on?

ELENA That wall! It’s opening!

SFX: The rumble grinds to a stop.

NATE

Looks like removing the sword triggers a secret

chamber.

SULLY (grunts as he rises)

Alright kids, let’s go.

SFX: Footsteps.

FAYBRIDGE (calling from a distance, voice echoes)

Well done! You live up to your reputations!

NATE

Faybridge!

SULLY

Run for the chamber!

SFX:(Point of focus switches to Faybridge’s position)

ADDITIONAL MERCENARY

Get them!

FAYBRIDGE

Stop, you fool!

SFX: Trap doors thunk, spikes hiss, Guard #1 screams.

ADDITIONAL MERCENARY(in pain)

Mr. Faybridge… my leg…

33

FAYBRIDGE Yes. Looks like you’ve found your destiny as

well.

ADDITIONAL MERCENARY

Wait. You can’t just leave me --

FAYBRIDGE

You’re useless to me now. But if you prefer--

ADDITIONAL MERCENARY

No. Wait. Mr. Faybridge, please --

SFX: Gunshot. Then another.

FAYBRIDGE

I trust the rest of you will now follow my steps

exactly. Nice and slow.

SFX: Steps moving slowly.

MUSIC: “I Am Worthy” ends.

34

Scene 7: The King Wakes

SFX: Footsteps rushing. Hissing steam in the background.

SULLY

It’s a dead end!

CHLOE

Lots of weapons. Swords, shields --

NATE

Not much good against guns.

ELENA

Here, here! Another door!

CHLOE

Looks like solid gold.

NATE (grunting)

It’s moving. Sully!

SFX: Nate and Sully grunting, sound of metal door scraping.

NATE

Everyone inside!

SFX: Shuffling feet, metal door scraping shut.

NATE (out of breath)

And… it’s pitch black.

SULLY (out of breath)

Find something to wedge the door shut.

NATE

I can’t even see the door.

SULLY

Anyone get a look before we --

ELENA

Yeah. But I don’t think you want to know.

NATE

Of course we want to know.

35

CHLOE OK then. First let me feel around... and wedge

the door shut... with this diamond-encrusted

sword.

NATE

Oh no… Don’t tell me.

ELENA (beat)

It’s a room filled with treasure.

NATE

I told you not to tell me!

SFX: Loud thumping on the door. Faybridge’s voice will sound a

bit muted coming through the door.

FAYBRIDGE

I see you found the treasure room.

NATE

Yeah sure, rub it in.

FAYBRIDGE

I’ll give you ten seconds to come out.

NATE

Yeah, forget it, Faybridge! This door’s a foot

thick. You’ll never shoot your way through.

FAYBRIDGE

That’s why my men are holding grenades.

CHLOE

(sighs) This just keeps getting better and

better.

ELENA

What’ll we do?

SULLY

Don’t have much of a choice, do we? (calling)

Faybridge! We’re comin’ out!

NATE

Man, I hate losing! Especially to this guy.

36

SFX: Grunting, door scraps open.

FAYBRIDGE

You four are like the Marx Brothers, except

you’re not funny.

SFX: Guns cocking, hammers clicking.

NATE

Before you kill us, can I just take one look at

the room full of treasure?

MUSIC: “The Treasure” begins.

FAYBRIDGE (chuckles)

The real treasure, Mr. Drake, is on this side of

the door. Please. Look around.

ELENA

Guys. Over here. On this ledge.

SFX: Feet moving.

NATE

Now there’s something you don’t see everyday. I

mean, something else you don’t see everyday.

SULLY

A dead knight. Right outta of the middle ages.

CHLOE

He looks pretty good for a dead guy. A little

gray maybe but —

NATE

His armor’s in good condition too. Who do you

think he is?

ELENA

Who do you--? I’m holding Excalibur, who do you

think he --

37

FAYBRIDGE The one and only King Arthur! Or should I say my

great-great etc… grandfather. (beat) Now, about

Elena holding Excalibur... After turning down my

offer to make a documentary on the subject --

after doubting the very existence of Arthur --

you, you were found worthy? How is that just?

(chuckles) I should kill you for that alone.

SULLY Yeah, and how were you gonna to get the sword?

You’re not exactly the worthy type.

FAYBRIDGE

True. The information I have is very specific on

the point. Excalibur would only be given to

someone judged worthy. An enchantment of

Morgan’s, no doubt. (chuckle) I see you tried and

failed, Sully. That’s some compensation, anyway.

(beat) Like you, I don’t know many truly good

people. So I brought the next best thing: power

tools. If the Lady of the Lake wouldn’t give me

the sword, I’d cut her open and take it. And if

that didn’t work, I brought explosives as well.

I’d blast the island apart until I found this

cave. But thanks to you, I just walked right in.

MUSIC: “The Treasure” ends.

NATE

You know you can’t wield the sword, right? I mean

whatever power it has, you’re unworthy, so --

FAYBRIDGE

Nice try, but Excalibur has no magic power. It is

and always was symbolic. The man who pulled the

sword from the stone was worthy to be king.

People would rally around such a man. It’s the

kind of thing kingdoms are built upon.

ELENA

You mean, you don’t want Excalibur?

38

FAYBRIDGE Most worthy Elena, of course I want it. It

belongs to me. But for my collection. It serves

no other purpose now. (beat) No, this, this is

the true treasure.

SFX: Footsteps. Hiss of steam as they approach the pit.

NATE

Steam coming out of a big hole in the ground?

What, you never heard of a sauna?

FAYBRIDGE

Sully, hold your hand over the steam.

SULLY

I’ll pass, thanks.

FAYBRIDGE

If you prefer, I can have you shot first.

SFX: Gun cocking.

SULLY

You know what? On second thought, I’d be glad to

do it.

FAYBRIDGE

The other hand, you idiot.

NATE (under breath)

Nice one, Sully.

FAYBRIDGE

And remove the bandage first.

SFX: Sound of steam gets louder as Sully moves even closer.

MUSIC: “The Philosopher’s Stone” begins.

SULLY

I...

ELENA

The hole in your hand, it’s… it’s healing!

39

SULLY

I don’t believe it...

FAYBRIDGE (laughs)

But even that is not the true treasure! No. I’m

interested in what’s creating the steam. At the

bottom of this pit, incorporated into the very

foundations of this island, is a large crystal.

It’s value is greater than all the wealth in all

the world.

CHLOE

OK, I’ll bite. What does the crystal do?

FAYBRIDGE

Ah, Ms. Frazer. Right about now, I imagine you

regret turning down my job offer.

CHLOE

Little bit, yeah. Is the job still open?

FAYBRIDGE (chuckles)

Sadly, no. (beat) But in regards to your

question, perhaps “crystal” is misleading.

ELENA

It’s the Philosopher’s Stone.

FAYBRIDGE

Bravo, Elena! You know your history.

SULLY

Well, 30 seconds ago I would have said that was

an alchemist’s pipe dream. The stone that turns

lead into gold.

FAYBRIDGE

Yes. I could turn lead to gold. I could turn the

very stone under our feet to gold. But I have

gold. The Philosopher’s Stone’s effects on flesh

are much more valuable. For one, it generates a

healing mist. Otherwise dear old Arthur would

have turned to dust centuries ago.

NATE

Wait. Arthur is still alive?

40

FAYBRIDGE The king merely sleeps. But that’s just the

beginning of the Philosopher’s Stone’s power.

When the healing mist is distilled into a liquid

using the proper technique, the Stone creates a

tonic for... eternal life.

NATE

You don’t really believe that, do you?

FAYBRIDGE

After all you’ve seen, I’m surprised you don’t.

ELENA

He has a point.

NATE

Hey who’s side are you --?

ELENA

I’m just saying.

NATE

Actually, you know what? Yeah you’re right I--

FAYBRIDGE

Think of the wealth and power that comes with

such a treasure. I’ll build a processing plant on

this very spot. Use cutting-edge technology. I’ll

utilize the Stone in ways Morgan and even Merlin

himself never imagined. I will change the world!

The things I will do with eternal life! The elite

society I will rule! The legacy I will create!

Because in the end, the only true treasure is

life itself. Everything else fades. Not unlike a

mist... (beat) Speaking of which, it’s time to

go.

NATE

I don’t suppose we can catch a ride?

41

FAYBRIDGE (chuckles) I’m afraid not. No, you’ll die here with Arthur

who, without the Philosopher’s Stone, will molder

in his sleep and turn into dust. But first, I

have a personal score to settle. How thoughtful

of Arthur to stock his chamber with swords. We

can do this old school (beat) Victor! Judgment by

combat. Defeat me and I’ll let you all live.

Choose your weapon.

SFX: Sword drawn from a sheath.

SULLY

Good by me. I’m all about old school.

SFX: Another sword drawn from a sheath.

NATE

Hey, hey, slow down. I think you need to choose a

champion?

SULLY

Forget it, kid. Now stand back.

ELENA

Nate –

NATE

No! I’m not being chivalrous. He’s got 20 years

on you, Sully. So do I.

CHLOE

He’s got a point.

SFX: Perspective shifts to Faybridge and backs up time slightly

so we can hear him give a secret command to his head mercenary.

FAYBRIDGE (under breath) Keep an eye on the others. And if by chance Mr.

Drake starts to win, shoot him.

HEAD MERCENARY (under breath)

With pleasure, sir.

42

FAYBRIDGE Not what I envisioned, but the end results will

be the same. Very well, I accept your champion.

NATE

Give me the sword, Sully.

SULLY

Elena?

ELENA (beat)

He’s right.

MUSIC: “Don’t Die” begins.

SULLY

(sighs) Here you go, kid. Just do me a favor and

don’t die.

NATE

Whoa, these broadswords are heavy --

ELENA

Nate, watch out!

SFX: Sword clash. Throughout the next conversation, swords clang

as they fight.

NATE

For an art collector (Clang!) you’re pretty good

(Clang!) with a broadsword (Clang!)

FAYBRIDGE

My whole life, I’ve trained as if I was living in

the Middle Ages.

NATE

Well (Clang!) that would explain the body odor.

(Clang!)

FAYBRIDGE

Growls (Extra Heavy Clang!)

SFX: Perspective shifts to Elena, Chloe, and Sully who are

watching the fight from the secret chamber.

43

ELENA Faybridge is gonna kill him!

SULLY

Not much we can do at the moment.

SFX: Perspective shifts back to Faybridge and Drake.

FAYBRIDGE

You look tired, Mr. Drake (Clang! Clang!) Is that

broadsword getting heavy?

NATE

No no. Though it does feel (Clang!) like I’m

using muscles (Clang!) I didn’t know I had —

SFX: Sword parries and Nate’s sword is torn from his hands. Feet

stumbling, body falls, grunts. Sword clatters across floor.

FAYBRIDGE (chuckles)

Go ahead. Pick it up. Chivalry is not dead.

SFX: Sword dragged as he picks it up. Nate grunts.

FAYBRIDGE

I almost want to wake Arthur. Just to see the

look on his face.

NATE (out of breath)

Oh yeah? Go ahead. I’ll wait.

FAYBRIDGE

Legend says the king will return when he’s

needed. With Excalibur in hand, he’ll rally the

good people of the earth. But that prophecy ends

here. After I dispense justice on you, Mr. Drake,

I will slice Arthur’s throat with his own sword!

SFX: The sword strike sounds move away as Faybridge drives Nate

back. Perspective shifts back to the secret chamber.

ELENA

Nate!

SULLY

Come on, kid…

44

CHLOE (under breath) Watch your space, Nate. He’s gonna knock you into

the lake.

SFX: A final “Clang!” and a big splash.

ELENA (under breath)

Sully, I have an idea.

HEAD MERCENARY

Hey! What’re you doing?

ELENA

Just putting this heavy sword down!

HEAD MERCENARY

Step away from there!

ELENA

OK! Relax.

CHLOE (under breath)

What good is that gonna to do?

ELENA (under breath)

Something Faybridge said made me think, if we

give Arthur his sword…

HEAD MERCENARY

Looks like your boyfriend is about to be your ex.

SFX: Water splashing, dripping, as Nate gets out of the lake.

Their dialog sounds farther away. Perspective shifts back to

fight.

NATE (out of breath)

Now you’re in trouble, Faybridge. A refreshing

dip is just what I needed.

FAYBRIDGE

I admire your spirit. Let’s finish this.

SFX: Swords clanging. Perspective shifts back to secret chamber.

CHLOE (under breath)

He can’t last much longer.

45

SULLY(under breath) I can’t watch this anymore. I’m gonna charge

these guys —

ELENA (under breath)

Wait! Look!

SULLY

Holy –

HEAD MERCENARY

What the ---? Uh Boss! He’s getting up! Boss!

SFX: Sound of armor stirring, deep gasp of breath.

CHLOE

Now I know what Lazarus looked like --

SULLY

Or a zombie.

SFX: In the background, we hear Faybridge bearing down on Nate.

Clang! Clang! Clang! In the foreground, we hear armored feet

thud on the ground.

ELENA

The King has awakened.

SULLY

And he doesn’t look happy.

HEAD MERCENARY

Stay where you are! Your… majesty? Boss! I said,

stay where you —

SFX: Sword swish, cuts through flesh, thumping sound.

ELENA

(Slight gag) Oh! Ugh! O--k…!

CHLOE

Hm. Cut his head off. Did not see that coming --

SULLY

Get down!

46

SFX: Gunfire, shouts, bullets ricocheting off metal.

SULLY

Look how fast he moves!

ELENA

Watch out!

SFX: Even more gunfire, ricochets, followed by sword slicing,

men crying out, bodies falling, silence.

CHLOE

The guy’s like a medieval cuisinart!

FAYBRIDGE (calling)

What’s going on in there?!

SFX: Armored steps walking away.

SULLY

Hey, he’s leaving.

ELENA

Come on.

CHLOE

He just disemboweled and dismembered seven men

and you want to follow him?

ELENA

Nate’s out there.

SFX: Their steps follow Arthur’s heavy armored steps.

MUSIC: “Don’t Die” ends.

47

Scene 8: Death of Faybridge

SFX: Nate breathing hard.

NATE (between breaths)

What’s the matter, Faybridge...? You need a

rest…? OK… I’ll grant you your boon this one

time...

FAYBRIDGE

Shut up! I need to see what’s going on in --

MUSIC: “Faybridge’s Destiny” begins.

SFX: Armored feet approach.

FAYBRIDGE

I don’t believe it.

NATE (awe)

Neither do I. (beat) But I’ll take it… I think.

ARTHUR (Old English, with authority)

Tôhwon rôðor êow? (Who are you?)

NATE

Uh… what now?

FAYBRIDGE

It’s Old English, you fool! He’s asking who we

are!

ARTHUR (SWITCHING TO MODERN ENGLISH)

Declare your purpose!

NATE

Alright, this sounds like a family thing. So I’m

just gonna drop my sword, raise my hands, bow my

head, and back away…

ARTHUR

Wise man. But you. You have the look of a thief.

Who are you? Answer your king!

48

FAYBRIDGE You are not my king! I am Dorian Faybridge,

descendent of Mordred and your own heir. I claim

Avalon as my right.

ARTHUR

Mordred? Mordred was a traitor.

FAYBRIDGE

He was no traitor. You are a despot! And you will

receive a depot’s fate!

SFX: Swords clash.

ARTHUR

You dare attack your king?!

FAYBRIDGE

You are not my king!

SFX: Swords clashing, feet moving. Perspective shifts away from

fight for conversation.

ELENA

Nate! Nate, are you all right?

NATE

I thought I was in trouble for a second there.

ELENA

You’re crazy, you know that.

NATE

I love you too.

SFX: Swords clang. A loud yell and a body thumping. Grunts of

pain.

NATE

What happened?

CHLOE

Arthur just hurled Faybridge into the chamber!

SULLY

Come on. This I gotta see.

49

NATE I mean, Faybridge is good but --

CHLOE

Yeah. There’s good. Then there’s the real thing.

SFX: Swords clash rapidly as perspective shifts back to the

fight.

ARTHUR

Mordred had no honor. (Clang!) He lusted to rule

for his own benefit. (Clang!) To him, the world

was something to consume. (Clang! Clang!) I see

the same greed in your eyes. (Clang! Clang!) And

the same fear!

SFX: Sword thrusts into flesh. Faybridge screams. Thuds to

knees.

NATE

That’s got to hurt.

FAYBRIDGE (weakening)

No… No… to come so close… to my destiny… to

eternal life…

NATE

Ah that’s really got to hurt.

ARTHUR

Save your soul. Beg forgiveness of your king.

FAYBRIDGE (dying, teeth gritted)

You… are not… my king! (shuffling) I can… still

get to… the Stone!

ARTHUR

You want the Stone. It’s yours!

MUSIC: “Faybridge’s Destiny” ends.

SFX: Sound of Faybridge screaming as Arthur kicks him into the

pit. Body thuds. Burst of hissing. More screaming.

ELENA

It’s like the Stone is dissolving him.

50

CHLOE It’s eating him alive.

SFX: More screams. Hissing builds. Muffled explosion. Shouts.

Louder hissing. Coughing. Death rattle.

CHLOE (coughing)

Can’t see -- mist stings!

ARTHUR

Go. You have my thanks.

SULLY (coughing)

Come on Chloe! We gotta get the planks down.

SFX: Feet shuffling away.

ELENA (coughing)

Arthur -- your majesty. Come with us!

NATE (coughing)

Elena! We gotta go!

ARTHUR

Return this to the Lady.

ELENA

This is your sword.

ARTHUR

Yes. But this is not my time. Hurry, girl. That

fool’s body has corrupted the stone. If I cannot

stop the alchemical reaction, it could destroy

this island and everything on it. I cannot

guarantee your safety. Now go!

NATE (coughing)

Elena, listen to the nice King and let’s go!

SFX: Hissing louder. Footsteps. Rumble like an earthquake.

ELENA (coughing)

The chamber’s closing!

NATE

Run for it!

SFX: Running and Chamber door thunders shut. Rumbling continues.

51

NATE That crazy mist is everywhere!

ELENA

This must be what tear gas feels like.

SULLY

Ah, trust me, its similar! Come on! We gotta get

these planks down!

SFX: Rumbling gets louder. Rocks falling. Feet on planks.

NATE

The place is falling apart!

ELENA

What about Arthur?

CHLOE

It’s every king and queen for themselves,

sweetheart!

SULLY

Let’s go --

SFX: Footsteps run away. Perspective follows Elena.

NATE

Elena!

SULLY

What’s she doing?!

CHLOE

Ugh! What do you think? She’s being Elena!

ELENA (under breath)

This belongs to you, Lady.

SFX: Sound of sword slid into sheath. Gears turn once again.

Perspective shifts back to group.

SULLY (close)

You realize that’s priceless.

NATE (close)

Yeah. And the sword’s worth a lot too.

52

SULLY (sighs)

Why do I gotta surround myself with decent folk?

Come on, Elena!

ELENA (getting louder as she approaches)

OK, I’m done.

MUSIC: “Main Theme Variation” begins.

CHLOE You sure? You don’t want to tuck Arthur in or

anything?

SULLY (chuckles)

Let’s get to the boat before this whole place

dissolves or worse.

NATE

Last one there has to sit by Sully!

CHLOE

Out of the way!

SULLY

(sighs) No respect.

SFX: Feet on planks, rumbling falls behind.

MUSIC: “Main Theme Variation” ends.

53

Scene 9: Epilogue

SFX: Boat on the water. You hear the engine and the water

against the sides.

NATE

The island was still shaking when we left. You

think Faybridge was, you know, conscious the

whole time the Stone was --

CHLOE

Dissolving him? Ugh! That’s almost too awful to

think about.

SULLY

Eh, what’s awful is leavin’ all that treasure

behind.

NATE (chuckles)

Hey, if you want to go back --

SULLY (chuckles)

I might, kid. I might. But back where, hm? From

out here, the island’s invisible and I didn’t

stop to pick up the map or the scans.

MUSIC: “Chloe’s Secret” begins.

CHLOE As treasure hunters, you’re a pathetic crew. Even

though, not all of the treasure was left behind.

SULLY

You’re not gonna get all Hallmark on me, are ya?

“It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”

CHLOE

Right. That’s me. All hearts and flowers. No.

When you boys were pleading with Faybridge, while

we were standing on heaps of treasure, I may have

taken a moment to pick up these.

SFX: Bag unzips and diamonds roll around.

SULLY

Holy mother!

54

NATE Wait, did you say pleading?

SULLY

Whaddya figure? Four to six carats each and

you’ve got three of ‘em?

CHLOE

One for you. Two for me. Flowers, no. Diamonds,

yes.

NATE Ha-ha! Chloe, I take back every mean thing I ever

said about you!

SULLY Ha-ha! I could kiss ya!

CHLOE

Try it and I’ll take the diamond back!

SULLY

Ah come on. It wouldn’t be that bad. (beat) Would

it?

CHLOE

I will throw you off this boat, Casanova.

NATE

I’m… just gonna let you two have a moment.

MUSIC: “Chloe’s Secret” ends.

SFX: Nate’s steps walking away. Perspective follows him.

SULLY

So, got any special plans for those diamonds?

CHLOE

As a matter of fact, I do.

SULLY

Hmm! Care to share any of them?

SFX: Sully’s voice fades out as Nate’s steps continue.

MUSIC: “Pathetic and Perfect” begins.

55

NATE Hey. You OK?

ELENA

What? Oh, yeah. I was just -- NATE

I know --

ELENA

Thinking --

NATE

I figured. (beat) Me too.

ELENA

Yeah? What about?

NATE

About being worthy.

ELENA

Come on. I got lucky --

NATE

That was the Lady of the Lake, Elena.

ELENA

She was just an automaton with --

NATE

With magical properties?

ELENA

Something like -- I don’t know -- I mean, did

Morgan figure out a way to push science so far

ahead of us that it looks like magic? Or -- I

can’t believe I’m saying this but -- is magic

real?

NATE

Yeah. It changes things, you know. Knowing Arthur

is real, I mean.

ELENA

And waiting to return.

56

NATE Yeah. Hey, did that freak you out too? I mean,

what’s he going to do, a guy with a sword? I

mean, how’s he going to change the world?

ELENA

I don’t know. Maybe one life at a time. I mean, I

feel changed.

NATE

Yeah. Yeah, me too. (beat) And I learned

something about myself.

ELENA

This sounds serious.

NATE

It is. I learned -- I mean, I know. Now. (beat)

I’m not worthy.

ELENA

Nate, the Lady of the Lake was a machine its --

NATE Of you, I mean. I’m not worthy of --

(Elena bursts out laughing)

NATE

--you. Um, I was kinda bearing my soul here --

(Elena laughs harder)

NATE

I’m serious, Elena. I --

(Elena laughs harder, can’t stop. Nate chuckles. Then laughs.)

NATE

OK. OK. It was pretty corny, wasn’t it.

ELENA (laughing)

Corny? I… I’d say more like pathetic!

NATE (laughing)

Yeah I guess it was a little – uh, wait,

pathetic? Really?

57

ELENA (sobering up) Pathetic. And perfect. Come here.

SFX: Kissing.

NATE

Note to self: be pathetic more often.

ELENA

(laughs)You know something interesting? Morgan,

in her studies, would have undoubtably studied

the Bible which, incidentally, talks about life

being a vapor.

MUSIC: “Pathetic and Perfect” ends.

NATE

No kidding. You think it was referring to the

mist?

ELENA

Maybe... It makes you think. The mist… The

Philosopher’s Stone… The dream of immortality…

(beat) I mean, life is so short. No one knows how

long they have.

NATE

We have right now.

ELENA

Mmmmmm… we do, don’t we? You know what I think?

NATE

That you wish we were alone on this boat?

ELENA

I think we make quite a pair.

MUSIC: “Finale” begins.

NATE

Who sounds pathetic now?

ELENA (chuckles)

We both do.

58

NATE (chuckles) Come here…

SFX: Waves and boat fade as music rises.

MUSIC: “Finale” rises in volume and carries us out.

“Uncharted: The Hidden Kingdom Main Theme” begins as
