WINSTEAD CHURCH HIS'rORY

At the Annual Conference of the Method-ist Church held in Greenville, NorthCarolina in November 1948, Rev. NormanVaughan was assigned to the EvansdaleChurch with an added appropr iation forthe purpose of organizing another Meth-odist Church in Wilson, North Carolina.This was a special project of the Ad-vance for Christ Movement of the NorthCarolina Conference and had been underconsideration for some time.

Early in July 1949, while visitingpersons interested in a new MethodistChurch in Wilson, Miss Clee Winstead wascon tacted. She seemed del ighted withthe idea and expressed the desire todonate the land. The par ticular sitewas a lot 150 feet by 373 feet in a pinethicket located on South Tarboro StreetExtension just outside the city limitson Highway #42.

On July 21, 1949 a group of ten inter-ested persons met in the home of Mr. andMrs. D. A. Baker for a prayer service.It was this meeting that Miss ZellWinstead gave fifty dollars which wasused to purchase twenty-five CokesburyWorship Hymnals and other incidentals.

These cottage prayer services continuedand as the weeks passed more personsbecame interested in the project. Itwas at the seventh meeting, at the homeof Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Rosser, that planswere made to clear the lot for a build-ing.

On S ep ternbe r 1 0, 194 9 twen ty - th reepersons gathered on the lot and began toclear the underbrush. About one fourthof the work was completed on that date.

At the Four th Quar te r ly Confe r enc eatEvansdale, on September 27, 1949, thetrustees of the Evansdale Charge wereauthorized to accept the land for achurch which was called South TarboroStreet Church until it could be organ-ized and named. The Conference alsoauthorized them to proceed with theerection of a church building. A build-ing committee consisting of J. H. Ross-er, chairman, T. A. Gray and ClintFarris was elected.

The Distr ict Committee on Church Loca-tion and Buildings met on October 1,1949 and approved the location.

On October 2, 1949 Matthew I. Boykin wasgiven the contract for the first unitwhich consisted of a building 16 feet by48 feet which was to be used for bothChurch School and worship services untila sanctuary could be built. Thebuilding was equipped with folding doorswhich divided it into three rooms ofequal size for use by the Church School.

It was through the generosi ty of pro-spective members and many friends thatit was possible to complete and furnishthis building which was free of debtwhen the first service was held onNovember 20, 1949 with Reverend NormanVaughan, pastor and organizer, presid-ing. The piano was donated by MissZell Winstead. The venetian blinds werea gift of the Annie Bishop Class of theFirst Methodist Church.

The women of the church met with thepastor at the horne of Misses Clee andZell Winstead on Tuesday, January 10,1950 for the purpose of organizing theWoman's Society of Christian Service.The following officers were elected:

Onder this competent leadership theSociety was very active in the work ofthe church. It has continued to grow.The following persons have served aspresident: Mrs. Clifton Cale, Mrs. CarlFinch, Mrs. Fred Hight, Mrs. Thomas H.Sanford, Sr., Mrs. Murphy Norris, andMrs. Hubert Amerson.

Miss Clee Winstead was the director ofthe fir st Vaca t ion Bible School whichwas held the last week of June 1950 withan enrollment of twenty-seven childrenand eight adult workers. The offeringstaken during the week were used topurchase a Bible for the pulpit.

During the fall of 1950 the first reviv-al was held wi th Reverend Daniel Boonedoing the preaching. Some of the otherministers who have conducted revival

services are: Reverend John Maides,Reverend Bent Musser, Reverend BillMeacham, Reverend Malloy Owen, andReverend Tom Collins.

At the Annual Conference in November1950 Winstead Methodist Church was takeninto the North Carolina Conference aspart of the Evansdale-Winstead Chargeand Reverend Lawrence A. Greene becamepastor. Under his leadership the ChurchSchool attendance and church membershipmade satisfactory progress. It wasevident that more room would soon beneeded, therefore a Building Fund wasstar ted in the hope that it would growsufficiently for the sanctuary to becomea reality.

On June 20, 1951 Mrs. Lawrence A. Greeneand Mrs. John H. Rosser organized aMethodist Youth Fellowship. Miss Doro-thy Barnes became its first president.The young people, though few in number,were very active. During the firstyear, through various projects, theycontributed $191.50 to the Building Fundand bought Sunday School and Hymn Boardsfor the church. The following personshave served as president of the YouthFellowship: Miss Edna Stancil,Miss Billie Ann Whitley, Miss JeanStith, Glenn Best, and Miss Brenda Cale.

At the Annual Conference in November,1952 Reverend Lawrence Greene, thepastor, left the ministry due to hishealth and the Reverend Charles W.Wooten came to the Evansdale-WinsteadCharge. Dur ing his two year s of serv-ice, both the membership and ChurchSchool made steady progress.

On June 27, 1954, winstead Method istChurch was dedicated. Bishop Paul N.Gar ber of Richmond, Vi r gin ia was guestspeaker and presided over the Act ofDedication. The pastor, ReverendCharles Wooten, presided over the serv-ice with Reverend J.F. Herbert, districtsuperintendent, and Reverend RobertBradshaw, pastor of First MethodistChurch of Wilson, N. C. participating.The dedication was preceded by a fel-lowship supper in the educational build-ing of the church.

At the Annual Conference in October 1954Winstead Church became a station andReverend Wallace M. Ellis became itsfirst full-time pastor. At this timethe trustees purchased a house at 1215Thurston Drive, Wilson, North Carolinaat a cost of twelve thousand, fivehundred dollars to be used as a parson-age.

Miss Zell Winstead, oldest member of thechurch, passed away May 12, 1953. Fol-lowing Miss Clee Winstead's death onJanuary 11, 1956, Mr. Bodie Ward andMrs. Elizabeth G. Swindell started amemorial fund in their honor. Thisfund was used to erect a steeple whichwas dedicated June 17, 1956. It isconstructed of stainless steel.

The trustees have recently purchased twoadditional acres of land adjoining thechurch property. Plans are now beingmade to construct an addition to theeducational b u i Ld Loq , consisting ofseven classrooms and church offices withappr ox ima tely 2800 square feet of floorspace.

At the Annual Conference in June, 1956,Reverend Ernest E. Edmond was appointedto the Winstead Methodist Church byBishop Paul Garber. He was transferredfrom the New York Conference where hehad served for thirty-two years.

At Conference in 1957 Rev. Amos Stonewas assigned to Winstead. Also in 1957,the new parsonage had been furnished andpaid for in full. A new EducationBuilding was the next project. Withabout half the funds needed on hand, ourgoal was to have this paid for in five

years. With the help of John Rosser andhis building committee, the building wascompleted in the fall of 1959. Withseven new classrooms added, Rev. Stoneand the Committee on Education enlistedmore teachers to attend training ses-sions in Sub-District Christian workersSchool.

In the spring of 1962, with some remod-eling, a pastor's study was finished forRev. Stone's personal use.

June 1962 Rev. Arnold Pope became ourpa s tor . D u r in g his f0 u rye a r s, webought our first organ and we werefortunate 'that one of our members, Mrs.Jack (Dorothy) Boykin could play it forus.

We felt at this time with Wilson Memori-al Hospital and Parkwood mall coming tothis area that our church should grow inall departments. 1964 reports show anincrease of 58 new members to add to aroll of 291. In August our first newsletter, The Winstead Wellspring, wasstarted.

Rev. Grady Kinley became our pastor in1966. All departments were progressingsatisfactorily. We now have four groupsin our Scout program - Boy Scouts, CubScouts, Brownies and Girl Scouts.

In 1968 the Methodist Churches andseveral other denominations joinedtogether and formed the United MethodistChurch and therefore caused WinsteadMethodist Church to change their name tothe Winstead United Methodist Church.

In 1968, Rev. John D. Aycock became ourpastor. The women were busy earningand collecting pledges from our churchmembers to get our sanctuary newlypainted and the men were working on thepar king lot. Homecoming was held thelast Sunday in October wi th Rev. W. L.Winstead as speaker.

In March 1970 we had a very inspir ingLay Witness Mission. In December 1970we had our first Chrismon Tree under theleadership of Millard and Catherine Lammand Fred and Sonda Hight, directors ofthe M.Y.F. Mr. and. Mrs. K.W. O'Geary,Jr., of First United Methodist Churchhelped this project to get started, alsothe Women's Soc iety and Method ist Menprovided financial aid and the tree.

In September 1971 steps were taken toget approval to buy a larger parsonage.April 30, 1972 open house was held atour new par sonage, 1005 Enswor th Road,Wilson.

Westview Chr istian Church and WinsteadUni ted Methodist Churches combined someof their activities to try to strengthentheir programs; such as, vacation BibleSchool at Winstead and Maundy ThursdayServices at Westview.

June 1972, Rev. R.W. (Bob) Morgan becameour pastor. One of the first things hedid was to make plans for our firstPictorial Church Directory.

This year 1975 proved to be a busy one;March 23-27 Holy Week Service, October19-22 Preaching Mission with Rev.Charles Sparks, Methodist Men's "PigPickin", November 4 Workshop on Alco-holism, December 24, Candlelight Serv-ice, December 31 at 11:30 WatchnightService.

Another busy year was 1976; FebruaryUMYFhad a starve-in, during the monthof February, Winstead Church was incharge of Hospital Devot ionals at 9: 30A.M., Summer of '76 watermelon cuttingand wiener roast for all the churchfamilies, September 5 Winstead UnitedMethodist Church services were broadcaston Radio WVOTat 11:00 A.M., ChristmasEve Candlelight Service and December 31Watchnight Service.

Plans are underway for a Lay WitnessMission in February 1977. April 7,Maundy Thursday Communion Service withci ty wide services for Good Fr iday andSunrise Service to follow. The summerwas filled wi th Vacation Bible School,family picnics, etc., to be enjoyed byall. October 2 we observed World Com-munion Service. December is busy withChr ismon Tree, making wreaths for thechurch, i terns for the shut-ins, churchwide Christmas party, Candlelight Serv-ice and Watchnight Service.

January 26, 1978 there was a covereddish supper for all church school people- teachers, workers and super intendentsin the Fellowship Hall.

October 13-15 special services was heldwith the Rev. Bobby Tyson, ConferenceEvangelist, as our preacher.

June 1979 br ings our new pastor, Rev.Jesse V. Bone. A church wide picnic isplanned to help our members and the newpastor and his family become betteracquainted. Mr. Bone spends a lot oftime visiting our shut-ins at home, inthe hospital, rest homes and nursinghomes. Mr. Bone initiated an earlychurch service for the deaf. The eventsof our church are being taken care ofand all departments seem to be progress-ing. In 1979 our second PictorialChurch Directory was printed.

Rev. Jean L. Hood was assigned to ourchurch in 1983. The United MethodistWomen with lots of help from the UnitedMethodist Men and other church membershave made many improvements at theparsonage, the church has bought a newcopier and the men have made an officefor the church secretary. In 1984 plansare underway for a much needed largersanct uary. Rev. Hood was on the Boardof the Children's Home in Raleigh whichwas to be dismantled. He helped us tobe able to acquire the inside structureof the sanctuary for us to use in ournew sanctuary. It was moved and storedin Wilson until our building was ready.A Building Fund had been started and onDecember 31, 1985 total available fundswas $143,472.24

The business and membership of thechurch grew, a total of 29 new memberswere received in 1985.

with the end of 1985, all bills havebeen paid in full with a balance on handof $2,049.32. In January 1986 withfifty-seven (57) members present theAdministrative Board met and startedtalking of plans to finance our buildingprogram, bond issue versus bank loan.It was voted to pursue the Bond Issueand Rev. Hood scheduled a Charge Confer-ence to approve the Bond issue and toelect a Bond Committee. The Trusteesrecommended to sell the furniture in theold sanct uary at a 40 % to 60% replace-ment cost which has been set at $13,400.The Org an Commi t tee recommended theAllen Computer Organ No. 3100 at a priceof $19,465 plus tax. It was voted toinclude the organ payment in the bondissue. Jean Griffin, Choir Director,asked permission at this time to pur-chase new choir robes at no cost to thechurch. This was approved. The totalchurch budget for 1986 was $66,000.41.

March 1986-, Rev. Hood announced theorgan had been paid for as a "Memorial".

The interest in the church in all de-partments was high and everyone wasbusy. A revival was held September 28-October 1 wi th Rev. Harold Lea thermanfrom Rockingham preaching. Rev. Ar thurWinstead was to be invited as speaker atHomecoming in October.

Rev. Hood presented the following sched-ule for activities. When moving intoour new sanctuary; First Sunday, Conse-cration Sunday, Second Sunday, Member-ship and Confirmation, Third Sunday,Dedication of Memorials. Dedication ofthe organ will be held with David Curtof Allen Organs presenting an organconcert.

At the Administrative Board meeting inMay 1986, Rev. Hood announced 'May: 25,1986 will be Celebration Sunday, thefir st Sunday in our new sanct uary. Newmembers will be coming into our church.Letters were sent to friends and formermembers inviting them to ConsecrationSunday on June 1. District Superintend-ent, Dr. Robert McKenzie, delivered thesermon and lunch followed the service.On June 8 High School graduates werehonored and on June 15 dedication ofmemorials was held during morning serv-ice and on Sunday night the dedicationof the organ.

In July 1986, $800.00 was donated towardpew cushions and the congregation wasasked to meet on Saturdays to beginlandscaping.

In September, a new Sunday School Classfor young adults was started, a newJunior High for U.M.Y.F. was planned,also a Senior Citizen Fellowship and aChildren' Choir.

At this time several money makingprojects were held by all members.

Rev. Hood praised our building program.We have a 50 net gain in our member-ship. Only 16 of 834 churches in Nor thCar 01ina Confer ence had more net ga in.Our Sunday School attendance in 1986 hada 24 1/2% increase and a 33% in ourchurch attendance over 1985. At presentwe have 508 church members.

Plans are being made now for our 1987programs. Our operating budget for 1987is $74,871.00 with mortgage payments of$45,356.00. At the January meeting in1987 the final treasurer's report of thebuilding fund from January 1, 1985through December 31, 1986 reported totalavailable funds $478,770.01; totaldisbursements $478,770.01.

During 1987, the various departmentsstayed busy doing such things as sellingthe old pews and using the money to putvinyl siding on the parsonage also a newhot water heater and ice maker for therefrigerator; the Methodist men bought anew lawn mower and voted to keep theyard; the Methodist Womeh continue tohave bazaars and have purchased a 100place setting of new china, chairs andtwo chair dollies. The Methodist Youthare having bake sales, a dance in theFellowship Hall to make money to sendtwo youths on a Mission Work Team toMexico.

Mr. Hood stated that he will be with usanother year. The Tr ustees voted toname our new Fellowship Hall, which hadbeen our old sanctuary, the Hood Fellow-ship Hall, in honor of Rev. and Mrs.Hood.

Plans are being made to have a newChurch Pictorial Directory made inJanuary 1988.

Since it is the end of 1987, we have tomake a new budget for 1988 and get our"Saddle Bag" run for pledges.

At the January 1988 meeting it wasreported that we met all commitmentsfor 1987 and our budget total for 1988is $124,696.00.

The Trustees thanked the Methodist ~?me~Jfor buying the concrete for the walkways and the Methodist Men for doing thework on them.

Since Rev. Hood will be retir ing thisyear, we will be expecting a new minis-ter by the end of June, 1988.

The Methodist men, women and youth areall busy with project s , The women askedpermission to carpet and refinish HoodFellowship Hall and it was granted.

At the May meeting, 1988, the Pastor-Pa rrish Commi ttee annou nc ed our newminister will be Rev. William Rickman"Rick" Pinner. He will be deliveringhis first sermon, on July 3.

Rev. Hood's retirment gift of cash fromthe congregation will be presented atthe 11:00 A.M. Worship Service and thereception will be Sunday afternoon onJune 5. Invitations to family, friends,former church members, ministers andassociates in the Sub-District have beenissued. His last Sunday in the pulpitwill be June 26.

Rev. Rickman Pinner met with the Admin-istrative Board for the first time onJuly 3, 1988. All departments had goodreports to present especially the UnitedWomen. The Uni ted Women had purchasednew furniture for the parsonage at acost of $2,085.86. Rev. Pinner commend-ed the Par sonage Commi ttee for a goodjob.

Rev. P inne r adv ised tha t the Capi ta 1Funds Campaign was passed at AnnualConference. Joyce Wells said it wasvOluntary so everyone would be given theopportunity to give. At the SeptemberBoard Meeting, Rev. Pinner gave thesuggested goal of $18,631.00 for ourchurch to be used for Capital Funds.This amount to be given over a threeyear period with the pledge paymentperiod beginning January 1, 1989. Thisplan was adopted.

A rental plan was made with BranchBanking and Trust Co. through RandyMa rshbur n for a new cop ie r for thechurch office. It was also noted that anew heating and air conditioning unitwas needed at the parsonage. The bid of$2,438.00 was accepted from Jones Heat-ing and Cooling.

The October 1988 board meeting openedwith a discussion of the 1989 budget inthe amount of $132,152.00. After somediscussion the budget was approved. Amotion was made and discussed concerninggiving our organist and choir directoreach two week ends_per 3ear off with pay.This motion carriea. Rev. Pinner de-scribed and talked about the cost of thenew hymnals we will be using in 1989.Each hymnal will be $10.50 if orderedpr ior to Febr uary 1, 1989. It wasdec ided our chur ch needed 225 hymnal sand a motion passed to order thembefore February 1, 1989. Members of thechurch can donate money for hymnals inmemory or in honor of someone as hasbeen done in the past. It will beannounced L in the newsletter to remindeveryone.

The UMW president, Frances Tanner, gaveher report of things the women have donewhich included making about 160 Chr is-mons for the church Chr istmas tree andmade and sold chicken salad for $415.33.

It appears we will have a busy Novemberand December. November 6 will begin our"Saddle Bag" campa ign for our pl edgesfor the 1989 budget; November 6, lunch-eon by Youth Fellowship for Golden AgeGroup, following church service; Novem-ber 23, Thanksgiving Eve Service; Decem-ber 3, Hang ing of the Greens; December11, C hr is tmas Can ta ta; Dec ember 18Chr istmas Family Night; December 24,Candlelight Service; Sunday, December25, Church Service.

At the January 1989 Board Meeting, JohnJohnson, Finance Commi ttee Chairman,gave a report that some pledge commit-ments for 1988 were not met by numerouspeople, therefore, we are behind $4,000in our 1988 obligations. He also saidif finances do not improve by March weshould have a meet ing to cons ider re-doing our budget. The Methodist Menvoted to give $.l,OOOto the 1988 budgetalso $25 per mo·nth to the Hope Station.At the May Board Meeting the treasurer,Margaret Brinkley, informed us that the1988 benevolences have been paid in fullbut we need to catch up on our 1989commitments. Rev. Pinner will speak tous about becoming organized with a soundprogram on stewardship, evangelism andmissions which have been approved byconsensus. Jim Keefer reported the M.Y.F.is strug-gling. There are now only three or fourmembers but they are not giving up.There will be a Children's Festival forthem during the summer with games andstories and refreshments.

Don Lamm, Chairman of the Trustees, saidthey had met and discussed the $285,000mortgage with Southern National Bank.Mr. Lamm and Rev. Pinner had checkedwith other banks and had decided Herit-age Bank offered the best proposal, a$250,000 loan with a side note of$35,000. This proposal was accepted andall checking accounts were transferredfrom Southern National Bank to theHeritage Bank. The fixed rate of 11.50%

and the payments of $2920.48 will beguaranteed for the first five years. Atthe June Board Meeting, it was announcedthat when the transfer was made theinterest rate had dropped to 11%. Rev.Pinner will explain this in a newslet-ter, also our present financial condi-tions and what needs to be done to getour finances in order. The UnitedMethodist Women contributed $5,000toward the $35,000 side note and Don andJane Lamm have given the church a lot tobe sold to go toward the note also. Thefinance Committee discussed fund raisingprojects to help our finances and it wasdecided to have a take-out barbecuechicken lunch and supper in August.Jane Lamm will be chairman.

Par kwoodwill continue to take care of the upkeepand the church will pay to Parkwood onan annual basis the net income receivedby the trust. This motion was approved.Other business as follows: 90 azaleaswere given to church by WRAL, refrigera-tor given to church by sons of Mrs.Edna Earl Underwood, permission wasgiven for old one to be sold at churchbazaar and approval to dispose of theold altar. On November 19 a calledmeeting of the Administrative Board washeld to approve the acceptance of thetrusteeship of the Winstead FamilyCemetery.

The Administrative board met January 7,1990 and the treasurer, Margaret Br ink-ley, gave her report which said allobligations have been met. Jim Keefer,Chairman of Finance Committee, distrib-uted the budget for 1990 and thankedeveryone for helping the church meet itsobligations and we all need to worktogether to payoff the side note byJune 1990.

There is a question of a bingo parloropening in the old Cook's building nearour church. The city planner sent aletter saying that persons andorganizations wishing to express anopinion on this should appear at ameeting January 16, 1990. The boardvoted to submit a letter to the Board ofAdjustments objecting to this and theyalso voted that the Lay Leader, FredHight, should attend this meeting.

The announcement was made that thechurch's attorney has died and that weshould secure a new attorney. TheBoard of Trustees will work on this.There was a discussion concerning main-tenance and access ib ility to the bui Id-ing such as turning on heat ahead oftime and opening the building. Sugges-tions were made for the ushers to assumethis responsibility on their designatedSunday. Thi s was finally made into amotion, voted on and it was passed.

The following items have been donated tothe church: a video player donated bythe United Methodist Men, a T.V. donatedby John Johnson and a cabinet for theT.V. and the video player donated byFred Hight.

The Finance Chairman, Jim Keefer, urgedeveryone to conserve church resources,have a fund raising project, that weinstitute a Winstead Church CapitalFunds Campaign and send a letter toevery family asking for a one-timedonation for the purpose of paying the

side note, repairing buildings andpaving the parking lot. A drainageproblem must be considered before theparking lot is paved. Don Lamm, Chair-man of Trustees, reported that a lot inthe country has been donated to be soldand the money will go to the church.During the spring the Capital FundCampaign was wor ked on and $4,750 wasgiven by members, $200 was contributedby United Methodist men $2,500 wascontributed by United Methodist Women.The United Methodist Men also volun-teered to buy squares of shingles tocover Hood Fellowship Hall.

In August it was announced that the sidenote had been pa id off because a donorgave $4,500. The estimated cost of theparking lot is $8,000 to $10,000. Thereis approximately $5,000 in the parkinglot fund but Jim Keefer said we areseveral thousand dollars behind where wewere last year with the budget anden cour a q edz all areas to conserve the-chUTCflresources. At the December meeting Jim Keeferdistributed the proposed budget for 1991in the amount of $140,200.88. A motionwas made and approved to accept thisbudget. It was reported by Rev. If thiswere done we would need more to coverchurch expenses for the beginning of1991. It was asked if there was anyundesignated money left. The treasurer,Margaret Brinkley, responded that allava ilable funds had been spen t towa rdthe outreach commitment except thefollowing: Catherine Smith Estate, LelaDurham Memorial Fund, Wednesday nightBible Study and the Parking Lot Fundwhich totaled $1900. Don Lamm asked allin attendance to contr ibute by January11 to help meet the goal of the outreachcontribution.

Don Lamm stated the cost of pav ing theparking lot is $14,167. He will con-tribute two lots valued at $5,000-$6,000each toward payment on the parking lot.He suggested that an unsecured note betaken out at Heritage Bank for $10,000to pay S.T. Wooten Company for thepav ing; he would sign the note and paythe interest. There is already $800 inthe Parking Lot Fund. This was madeinto a motion with a further statementthat the note be paid off with contribu-tions and money from lot sales. Themotion was seconded and carr ied by theboard.

'I'he February 24, 1991 minutes showedthat the only report was from the UnitedMethodist Women. The treasurer, Marga-ret Brinkley asked Annette Boyette,Cha i rman of the Finance Commit tee, toaddress the board. She stated thatpledges were not what they should be andthere was not enough money to pay thebills. She asked for suggestions andhelp in this problem of church finances.It was reported that there was a deficitof $4,253.53, which means all billscannot be paid. There was a lot ofdiscussion concerning this situation but:no positive solution since attendance isdownn and pledges are not coming in.Kathey Fairchild, President of UnitedMethodist Women, stated that the womenwould donate $1,000 to assist with thebudget.

Three vacancies need to be filled,Committee on Evangelism, Pastor/Parishand Council on Ministries. Al Monshowerwas nominated for the Pastor/Parishvacancy; others will be presented later.It was also recommended that a letter ofappreciation be written to MargaretBr inkley for all her work as treasurerwith no pay and be presented to her inch urch.

In February Rev. Pinner wished the boardfarewell and stated he hoped the churchwould grow. He later made this an-nouncement from the pulpit. Late inJune, the United Methodist Women pre-pared a going away party for Rev. Pinnerand family.

The Har ry C. Tee Family star ted a TeeScholarship Fund in 1991 and two schol-arships were awarded at the closing ofschool to Ray Brinkley and Brad Keefer.

Dur ing the conference meeting in June1991, Rev. James L. Summery was appoint-ed to fill the pastorate of Winstead.On the last Sunday in June a receptionwas planned to wel come Mr. Summey andhis family to our church. There wasgood attendance at the reception tomeet Mr. Summey, his wife, Doris andtheir three daughters. Also the circlespr epar ed even ing meal s and del i ver ed totheir home to help them while they weremoving and getting settled in.

By the end of 1991 things were beginningto look better but we di~ not meet ourbudget for 1991, due to loss of member-ship and pledges not being met.

Everyone felt that 1992 had to bebe t t e r . Du r in g Fe b r ua r y 1992, theUnited Methodist Men started a projectof cooking and sell ing peanuts to helpmake money for things they wanted to do.Their first project from this money wasto install a new cook stove, exhausthood and fan in the kitchen.

Homecoming was held in October w.ith Hev.Amos Stone deliver ing the morning ser-mon. Attendance was good, a table ofmemorabilia was displayed and a bi qtable of food s_et. up_o.rLJ:~b~ lawn wasenjoyed by all following the services.

In November, Mr. Summey had a Thanksgiv-ing Eve Service. In a few days follow-ing Thanksgiving, the members had toprepare all the decorations for theHanging of the Greens and the lightingof the Christmon Tree service in prepa-rat ion fo r the Adven t Season. Also onthat Sunday night we had the firstlighting of our love tree on the lawn.

Each Sunday sermon and music along withthe lighting of an Advent Candle wasleading up to the birth of Jesus.During this season we also had theChristmas Cantata by the choir under thedirection of Chet Hunt, organist anddirector, churchwide Christmas party,the Un ited Me thod ist Women Chr istmasdinner and candlelight service onChristmas Eve.

1992 proved to be a much better year.Lots of warmth, love and fellowship werebeing shown, pledges had been paid andall out debts had been paid wi th somemoney left over to begin 1993.

The year 1993 started out on a good notesince Mr. Summey had received a letterfrom Bishop C.P. Minnick thanking Win-stead Church for meeting our financ ialObligations for 1992.

Treasurer, Margaret Brinkley, gave atreasurer's report and Sanda Hight gavea Council on Ministries report whichappears we are to have a busy year.

The United Methodist Men had a Sweet-heart Banquet for their wives on Febru-ary 14.

Joyce Wolfe, Chairperson of WorshipCommittee, started a new program for layreaders to help with church services.

A Charge Conference on Febr uary 24 washeld to get permission to sell threelots given to the church by Joyce andPete Wells. The vote approved the sale.

A Mission Saturation Event was heldMarch 5,6,7 with Dr. Ron Smith and Mr.Ron Gill as guest speakers. Includedduring the week end was the UnitedMethodist Women's Week of Prayer andSelf-Denial brunch and program.

Mr. Summey gave a study on Counc il ofMinistries at our Wednesday night Biblestudies.

The deal to sell the three lots fellthrough because a deed was not attain-able so we will need another chargeconference to settle this matter. Thisconference will be April 21. At thismeeting it was voted to dispose of thelots anyway we could so taxes would nothave to be paid on them.

Two proj ects have been underway: (1) toget the parking lot striped with visi-tors signs and (2) to get a new sign forthe front of the church.

On May 23, the UMYFheld a talent showfor performances by church members tosponsor a passion child. This showproved there was some very talentedpeopl e in our chur ch fo r it turned outto be a two hour production which wasreally enjoyed by all.

As of May 31, 1993, the treasurer'sreport showed we had a usable balance of$10,857.14 on hand.

Annual Conference was held June 16-19and Mr. Summey was assigned to ourchurch again.

At the June board meeting, Mr. Summeyasked that we install a security buzzerfrom the nursery to the Northex wherethe ushers are in case help is needed inthe nursery. Also it was asked that atelephone line be run to the kitchenarea. Both i terns car r ied when a votedwas taken. The projects have since beencompleted.

A Sunday School picnic was held June 6at Wedgewood Golf Club shelter. Thefood and games were enjoyed by all, June12 the UMYFhad a car wash and on June13 the United Methodist Men had a Fa-ther-Son breakfast.

Margaret Brinkley was granted permissionfor her Girl Scout Troop to meet at thechurch on Monday nights.

Vacation Bible School was held August 1-6 and we had very good attendance, butthe cook out on the last night wasrained out.

Teacher recognition and promotion daywas held on August 29.

Some of our church members participatedin the District Habitat for HumanityHouse building with groundbreaking inRocky Mount on September 11.

Our church held a churchwide yard sal ein September and the proceeds amoun tedto more than $900. Two other Council onMinistr ies program for the summer wasan Ice Cream Social and a Great Day ofSinging - Choir Appreciation Sunday. AVCR tape on cho ir mus ic was star ted onthis day and is available for churchuse.

The United Methodist Men, through their"peanut program", have installed a newstove and a hood in the church kitchen.

The back of the church lot has beencleared with the anticipation of in-stalling a new fence.

Joyce Wolfe, Chairperson for WorshipCommittee, reported that money has beendona ted for the pur chase of three oc-taves of handbells and a handbell choirwill be started. Since then the choirhas been started and will play at home-coming for worship service.

Some members are interested in organiz-ing a singles ministry. The Administra-tive Board approved our church be usedby Hospice for their volunteer training.

Our ing the summer our Wednesday nightmeal and Bible Study did not meet butwas started back in September. TheMagic Age club did not cancel during thesummer. They continue to meet thefourth Tuesday of each month for acovered dish dinner.

On October 1, the church had a big. barbecue chicken sale under the supervi-sion of Vernon and Marie Barnes. Allphases of the' sale went well andever yone seemed pl eased. Thi s boos tedour general budget by $7,163.16.

Beginning October, we started our pledgecampaign to cover a budget for 1994 of$142,956.

At the Administrative Board meeting inOctober 1993, a new policy on memorialswas recommended and was approved by theboard. The recommendations were: (1)six months after the death of a memberthe family will be noti f ied as to thememorials and they can designate how touse the money to be approved by thememor ial committee, the trustees andAdministrative Board. If the familydoes not designate, the money will goin to the memor ial fund and the ch urchcan designa te how it can be used. (2) Alist of all contributions will be placedin the Winstead Memorial Fund Book everysix months.

The members have been busy cleaning thechurch for fall clean up prior to Home-coming on October 24. A former minis-ter, Rev. Arnold Pope, was our guestspeaker and the Handbell Choir performedfor the first time.

The UMYF Halloween Carnival was heldOctober 27. Fun, games and goodies wereenjoyed by all.

The Hospice 0 f Wi lson held tr a in ingsessions during October at Winstead andthe seventh annual Hospice VolunteerBanquet was held November 4.

The Scouts had a lock-in at the churchon October 29 and the Duke Youth Day wasOctober 30. Our young people look for-ward to these programs.

November brought forth our ThanksgivingServ ices and the next two days we werebusy prepar ing wreaths and decorationsfor the Hang ing 0 f the Greens se rv iceand the Advent Love Tree on November 28,the beginning of the Advent Season.

December was a busy month wi th so manyChristmas programs being done: TheUnited Methodist Women's ChristmasDinner and par ty on December 7, theChristmas party on December 12, theChristmas Cantata on December 19, theChr istmas Eve service and communion onDecember 24.

To close out the year on Sunday afterChristmas December 26, we observedCollege Day or Student Sunday to honorthese people in our church.

We have had a very good year and are nowlooking forward to a Happy New Year1994.

**********************************In 1993, after a Hand Bell Choir per-formed at our church, several peopleexpressed the desire that we could havea Hand Bell Choir. Mrs. Neva Tee made acontribution to start this beautifulmusical choir to our church. Mrs. AliceAdams and Mrs. Mildred Murphy learned ofthis and joined Mrs. Tee in honoringtheir loved ones.

The handbells were purchased and Mrs.Joyce Wolfe offered to direct the volun-teers in this choir. The hand bellswill be dedicated to the glory of Godduring a church service in 1994 inmemory of Mr. Harry Tee, Mr. William"Bill" Adams and Mr. Douglas E. Murphy,Jr .

There have been many gifts and memorialsgiven to Winstead Church by friends andmembers in memory or in honor of theirloved ones for beautification of thegrounds as well as in the church. Thesecan be found Li, sted in the "Gi fts andMemorial Registry" in the Narthex of thechurch.

UNITED METHODISTWOMEN

On January 10, 1950, the women of thechurch met wi th the pastor to organizethe Women's Society of Christian Serv-ice. The officers were elected asfollows:

The membership grew to fifteen by .June1951. At this time, all the women metat the church as one circle.

The women chose a patient at WilsonCounty Sanitarium for their project.

The week of prayer and self-denial wasobserved The women saved coupons forthe Method ist Orphanage. These womenkept the church clean. Each woman tookthis responsibility for one month at atime.

The bread for the communion was baked bythese women. The recipe was as follows:1 cup plain flourpinch of saltvegetable shortening the size of an eggWork this into dough, divide into fourpar ts, roll very thin, place on bakingpan, cut with a thimble, bake at 250un t i 1 v e r y c r i s p ( not n e c e s s a r i 1 ybrown), remove the round pieces to theCommu n ion Se r v ice. This will s e r v eabout 300 people.

The Winstead lad ies wer e the ones whogave the land for the or iginal uni t ofthe church.

For a few years in the fifties, therewere six circles. It was decided tohave one c ircle meet on Monday nigh t,two meet on Tuesday morning and two meeton Tuesday night. The Monday nightcircle was named in honor of Ruby Wil-liams' mother, Mrs. Gulia Aycock. Thenew Tuesday morning circle was named inhonor of Mrs. Elizabeth Morgan.

These women of the church kept very busywith such activities as follows:ma king sunshine ca rds to be used ontrays for patients in the hospitals andrest homes, keeping the nursery dur ingchurch service, furnishing flowers whenneeded for the sanctuary, selling chick-en salad, making chicken stew, furnish-ing refreshments for the church-wideChristmas party and having bazaars.

In 1970, the women had a big arts andcrafts auction sale. The highlight forthe auction was two of Mrs. Morgan'squilts. This event lasted ten hours andwas featured on "The Peggy Mann Show."

The women made Christmas wreaths for thefront of the church.

The shut-ins were remembered wi th gum-drop trees, a box of Chr istmas cookiesor an arrangement of greenery.

Dolls were dressed for the SalvationArmy for a number of years.Flowers were furnished for the Chapel atthe Sanitarium for one month each year.

The first Yule Party, the women invitedtheir husbands and served them dinner atthe church.

With proceeds from all the money makingproj ects, the women were able to buychina, crystal, flatware, silver trays,etc. A cabinet for storage was needed,so one was built and placed in thekitchen. Proceeds from a concessionstand at the antique show were used toimprove conditions in the kitchen, suchas a new sink and counter top.

In 1968, the Methodist Conference decid-ed Methodist needed to be United Method-ist. This changed the Women's Soc ietyof Christian Service to United MethodistWomen.By 1978 enough funds had accumulated toredecorate the fellowship hall.

In 1979 the dining room furniture forthe parsonage was re finished wi th helpfrom Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Proctor, Mrs.Louise Hight, Mr. Ray Etheridge,FredHight III, and Mrs. Garnett Mills.

Other responsibilities the women hadwere furnishing flowers and cards forthe sick and fixing food for the be-reaved families in the church.

Through 1984, twenty-four special mem-bership pins and one tie pin have beenpresented to persons who have shownoutstanding services in the church andcommunity.

Memorials which were given were asfollows: green and gold altar hangings -for Mr. Z.M. Morgan, Henry Taylor, andBetsy Aycock, azalea bed wi th concretemonument for Jimmy Joyner, HubertAmerson, and W. G. Causey, white altarhang ing s - fo r Mr. John H. Rosser andMrs. Hubert Amerson.

In the hall of the ed uca t ion bui ld ingare the photographs and a plaque aboutMiss Clee Winstead, Miss Zell Winstead,Miss Fannie Perry, Mrs. Gulia Aycock,and Mrs. Elizabeth Morgan.

During the years the circles changed andin late 1980 there were four circles;Monday night - Gu1ia Aycock Circle,Tuesday morning - Elizabeth MorganCircle, Tuesday night - C1ee-Ze11 Win-stead Circle, Thursday night - Catherine8m ith C irc1e, a new c ir c1e formed in1988 for women 39 and under and namedfor one of our educators who was veryinterested in young people. As ofJanuary 1992, there were 65 members ofWinstead United Methodist Women.

The Fannie Perry Circle changed to theFannie Perry Helpers. This group ofwomen are not regular members of theWUMW, but they stand ready to help inchurch projects when called upon. As ofJanuary 1992 there were 24 members inthis group.

METHODIST YOUTH FELLOWSHIP

On J une 2 0, 195 1, M rs. Law re nee A .Greene and Mrs. John H. Rosser organizeda Met hod isty 0 uth Fellow ship. Mis sDorothy Barnes became its first presi-dent.

The young people, though few in number,were very active. During the firstyear, through various projects, contrib-uted $191.50 to the Building Fund andbought Sunday School and hymn boards forthe church.

The following persons have served aspresident of the Youth Fellowship: MissDorothy Barnes, Miss Edna Stancil, MissBillie Anne Whitley, Miss Jean Stith,Glenn Best, Miss Brenda Cale.

The M.Y.F. worked at projects for thechurch and for the things they wanted todo for their organization.

In December 1970, the M.Y.F. and their1ead ers, Kat her ine and Mill ard Lamm ,Fred and Sanda Hight with the help ofMr. and Mrs. K.W. OIGeary, Jr., decorat-ed our Christmas tree with our firstChrismons.

In 1986 plans were made for a Jr. HighM.Y.F. Program. They had a bake saleand a dance in the fellowship hall tofinance a trip for two youth on a mis-sion work team to Mexico.

December 6, 1988 the Youth Fellowshiphad a luncheon for the Golden Age Groupfollowing morning church service.

In 1989, Jim Keefer reported that theM.Y.F. attendance has deteriorated andthere are now only three or four membersbut they are not giving up. A Chil-dren's Festival is planned for thesmaller children during the summer.

In the 1990's Kathey and Mel Fairchildassumed the leadership of the U.M.Y.F.They have regular Wednesday Night meet-ings which have proved successful.Trips and parties and other projectshave been enjoyed by all.

The M.Y.F. sponsored a churchwide talentshow which turned out to be a very goodproduct ion and was enj oyed by all thepeople which crowded the Hood FellowshipHall.

UNITED METHODIST MEN

By 1957, the men of the church became avital part of the church with theirvisitations and evangelism. They met ona regular basis and called themselvesThe Fisherman's Club.

As they continued to witness for Christand the Church, they became organized asMethodist Men in 1959 with 32 chartermembers.

The men sponsored the Boy Scouts as wellas worked with them as their leaders andteache rs . The Scouts wer e star ted in1959.

They were busy with painting, working onthe parking lot, and replacing shingleson the church as well as financingprojects of all kinds.

They met on the second Sunday of eachmonth at the church for breakfast,fellowship and devotions.

In 1983, the men worked hard at makingmany improvements at the parsonage.They al so have made an of fice a t thechurch for the secretary.

In 1987 the Methodist men bought a newlawn mower and voted to keep the yard.

For sever al year s they have had Sweet-heart Banquets at Valentine and enter-tained their wives.

and served brunches for the UnitedMethodist Women1s meetings and servedthe evening meal for the Mother-DaughterBanquet in May.They are now having a Father-Son break-fast in June.There are 25 members in the UnitedMethodist Men as of January 1992; MelFairchild is their president.

THE PEANUT GANGAs of early 1992, the United MethodistMen, under the capable leadership ofAubrey Ander son, star ted a new proj ectto help them finance some of the thingsthey plan to do. This project is roast-ing and packag ing peanuts in jars forsale, wholesale or retail. They havejestingly acquired the name of I1ThePeanut Gangl1.

THE BOY SCOUT TROOP #89

Boy Scout Troop #89 was moved from thesponsorship of the American Legion to besponsored by Winstead United MethodistChurch in 1959. Wayne Sidelinger wasthe scoutmaster with help from other menof the church and also some fathers ofsome of the Scouts who were not membersof our church. This Scout Troop grewand enjoyed many things of scout li fesuch as week-end camping trips andcamporees where many many troops wereinvolved. The competition was tough buta lot of times our troop came in as win-ners.

Fred Hight, Assistant Scout Master sinceAugust 1967, assumed the position ofScout Master in 1968 following theretirement of Wayne Sidelinger with PaulBrinkley becoming Assistant Scout Masterin 1971. Fred worked long and hardhelping these young men achieve theirgoals in scouting. In 1990 he becameTroop Committee Chairman in the Scoutorganization of Winstead Church. Thereis a Boy Scout, Cub Scout, Brownie andGirl Scout Troop meeting at Winstead.

On March 1, 1990, Paul Brinkley assumedthe position of Scoutmaster of Boy ScoutTroop 89.

Three scouts of 89 and members of WinsteadChurch have received the God and CountryAward. They are Richard H. "Rick" Tee,Rog e r C. Tee, and Al be r t Ray "A I"Phelps, Jr.

MAGIC AGE CLUB

During the years that Rev. Jean Hood wasminister of Winstead United MethodistChurch, he organized, with the help ofMrs. Joyce Wol fe, the Chur ch organ ist,the Magic Age Club. This Club was forthe sen io r member s of the chur ch. Theymeet the fourth Tuesday of each monthfor a covered dish lunch meal, fun andfellowship. Joyce Wolfe was the fir s tleader but her work hours changed andJoyce Wells and Jean Proctor were elect-ed as co-leaders. There have been guestspeakers and entertainers, trips andv isi ts to our far thest member s' horne,Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sanford in Creed-moor, for lunch. We can say that every-one seems to enjoy these meetings sincethere is good attendance and plenty offood.
