“Eternal life”
• “Deep in the soul of every human being is a longing for transcendence created within us by God Himself.” (James MacDonald)
• “God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart” (Ecc. 3:11 NLT).
Three common responses
1. I know what is right.
2. I am good enough.
3. I will try harder.
1. “I know what is right.”
"What is written in the Law? How do you read it?" (v. 26 ESV).
1. “I know what is right.”
And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and [you shall love] your neighbor as yourself" (v. 27 ESV).
1. “I know what is right.”
"Right!" Jesus told him. "Do this and you will live!" (v. 28 NLT)
1. “I know what is right.”
"Right!" Jesus told him. "Do this and you will live!" (v. 28 NLT)
Knowing what is
right is not enough.
You have to do it.
2. “I am good enough.”
But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” (v. 29 ESV)
2. “I am good enough.”

2. “I am good enough.”
"Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" (v. 36 ESV)
Being good enough
is not enough. Only
Jesus is really good
enough.
3. “I will try harder.”
He said, "The one who showed him mercy." And Jesus said to him, "You go, and do likewise." (v. 37 ESV)
3. “I will try harder.”
He said, "The one who showed him mercy." And Jesus said to him, "You go, and do likewise." (v. 37 ESV)
Only Jesus and what
he has done and is
doing for us is
enough for us.
