Matt. 23:37-39 37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets,

and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth

her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. 39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye

shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Luke 19:41-44

And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,

42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

43 For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,

44 And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because

thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

The New Testament records three instances when He wept:

1. At the tomb of Lazarus (John 11:35); 2. When He prayed (Hebrews 5:7);

Heb. 5:6-10 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever

after the order of Melchisedec. 7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up

prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

10 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

I. He Wept over their False Belief They had Moses and the prophets. (Luke

Page 9: Jesus weeps over Jerusalem Matt. 23:37-39 Luke 19:41-44

John 5:45-47 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the

Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.

46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.

47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

Page 10: Jesus weeps over Jerusalem Matt. 23:37-39 Luke 19:41-44

Does Jesus see any false beliefs in our city and community?

1. Different plans of salvation (Acts 2:38) You could know the true way of salvation, BUT BUT

YE WOULD NOT”YE WOULD NOT” 2. Different ways to worship (John 4:23) You could know the true worship of God, BUT YE WOULD NOT 3. Spiritual blindness (Matthew 13:14-15) You could have seen the truth, BUT YE WOULD NOTBUT YE WOULD NOT

Matt. 13:14-15 14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias,

which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:

15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

Luke 9:23-25 23 And he said to them all, If any man will

come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

Page 14: Jesus weeps over Jerusalem Matt. 23:37-39 Luke 19:41-44

Luke 9:57-62 57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man

said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air

have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. 59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer

me first to go and bury my father. 60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou

and preach the kingdom of God. 61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go

bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. 62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the

plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Crying ,shedding tearsfor the lost… We need to shed more tears for the lost. (Psalm

126:5-6) 5 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. 6 He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing

precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

It is only now that we can show concern. One

day we won’t be able. (John 9:4) BUT YOU WOULD NOT!BUT YOU WOULD NOT!

IV. Jesus Wept Because of Impending Judgment

Jesus knew what was going to happen in about thirty-five years.

The Roman army would turn Jerusalem into a blood bath and kill vast multitudes of Jews.

Page 20: Jesus weeps over Jerusalem Matt. 23:37-39 Luke 19:41-44

2 Pet. 3:10-12 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in

the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

Page 22: Jesus weeps over Jerusalem Matt. 23:37-39 Luke 19:41-44
