TRANSCRIPT
Luke 17: 11-19 Thanksgiving
Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along
the border between Samaria and Galilee. As He was
going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met
Him. They stood at a distance and called out in a
loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”
When He saw them, He said, “Go, show yourselves
to the priests.” And as they went, they were
cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was
healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He
threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked Him—and
he was a Samaritan.
Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are
the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise
to God except this foreigner?” Then He said to him,
“Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”
The men cried out, “Have mercy.” Jesus told the
men to go and show themselves to the priest. You
see, the priest was the one person who could make
the declaration they had been healed. These ten
sick men started walking immediately. If you wait
until your problems are over, you will miss the
power of God in your circumstances. You cannot
put conditions on God. You cannot say, “Lord as
soon as there is enough money, I will follow you. I
will begin to tithe when I have saved enough for
the down payment on that new truck”. You should
not pray, “Lord, when you solve these problems in
my family, I will start going to church again.” God
calls us to trust Him before there is any change.
God asks, “Will you love me now, before there is
change. Will you follow me now, before there is an
abundance of whatever it is you think you need?
Will you trust me now, to do what I say, in spite of
the circumstances?”
Jesus is not looking for you to fake it until you
make it. Sometimes we talk about our faith, but
our actions and words don’t support the testimony.
How about Noah or Abraham? These were men
who took action based on their belief that God was
who He said He was and would do what He said He
would do. I love the idea that Noah built a boat
before the rain, so large that Lish and Luke could
not have moved it. It had to be floated away. That
was faith. The ten lepers went, to the priest before
they were healed.
You, or some of your family, or folks you know may
be in some bad circumstances. Will you trust Him
beyond what you see?
In the Scripture today, one man turns and heads
back to thank the One who healed him, and the
Bible says he shouted. Are we excited enough
about what God has done in our lives to shout,
“Thank you, Jesus.”

On Sunday, November 10, we will
have Sunday School at 9:45 am
and then one worship service at
11:00 am. The 11:00 am worship
will be a “Veterans Day Service.”
We will have special music,
including a bagpiper. We would like to encourage all
veterans and their families from our community to join
us. After the 11:00 service, we will have a covered dish
luncheon in the fellowship hall. Meat will be provided
by our United Methodist Women’s Circles. Bring your
favorite side dish or dessert,
wear your brightest smile, and
join our church family for a
special meal. There are many
new faces at Bethany! This is a great opportunity to get
to know each other better in a casual setting.

A small shoebox can have a big
impact. What goes into the box
is fun, but what comes out of it
is eternal. Be a part of changing children’s lives all
over the world in Jesus’ name through the power
of a simple gift with Operation Christmas Child.
On Sunday, November 10, please bring your
shoe box back to the church, and place on the floor
in front of the altar. On Sunday, November 17, we
will have prayer over the shoeboxes and deliver
them that week.

Our missions group has returned to Haiti
(October 29) to work on the church some more
using donations and money raised from our recent
pancake breakfast. The pancake breakfast was a
big success, so we'll plan on doing it every year
along with the Break The Chains 5k. Along with working on the church, we are building 20 more pews for another church up in the mountains. On this trip there will only be three people going. Haiti is a place of a lot of unrest, so we ask for your prayers for God's protection. Thank you for your support.

I was unable to hit the newsletter deadline last
month because we were headed to Charlottesville
to see kids and grandkids. We left the day of
September’s Bethany’s Table, and so many kind
souls covered my responsibilities. What a great
church we have! The crew served and delivered
chicken salad and saltine crackers, baked beans,
and yellow cake with chocolate icing. When I got
back, I heard from more than one source that it
was the smoothest packaging day we had ever had.
Now, what am I supposed to think of that?! What
element was missing from the equation?
We have been gathering and freezing fish this
late summer and fall from various sources. The
Marine Fisheries put us over the top when they
called with 50
pounds of flounder.
Like riding a bicycle,
my dear husband
had not forgotten
how to clean
flounder, as well as
cook them. Luke
Meekins brought
around the state-of-
the-art kitchen
trailer that his dad,
Lish, started
building and that he finished. Carl Beacham and
Mitchell Bateman
came to help, and
the men had the
fish and some
popcorn shrimp
that we bought
fried up in no time.
Of course, with seafood we had to have cole
slaw. We also prepared a cold Mexican rice and
bean salad as we continue to use the dry goods
that have been given to us. The fun element of
the meal was an apple dumpling that was made by
wrapping crescent roll dough around a Granny
Smith wedge. It is topped with sugar, cinnamon,
and butter, and then baked after pouring Mt. Dew
over it. It sounds crazy, but it is the most delicious
treat I’ve eaten in a long time.
Marla Beasley has done an outstanding job of
rounding up drivers the last two months. It has been an
exercise in faith for her, getting anxious before realizing
that God has got it all worked out.
Wayne’s sisters, Orphia “Sis” Hoppes and Carol Gray
of Oak Island, NC,
were visiting and came
to help us in the
kitchen. They receive
The Lighthouse, and
feel like they’re part
of our church. Other
honored guests
were Becky
Beacham’s
granddaughter,
Julia, and sweet little
great gran, Becca.
In September, we
served 180 meals at
$.42 per person with
27 volunteers. In
October, we served
179 meals at $1.63
per person with 23
adult and 6 child
volunteers.
When Wayne was researching and gathering material
for A History of Bethany United Methodist Church that
was published in 2009, there was one thing that eluded
him. He could not find a photograph of our early church
that was located about a hundred yards up the present
Old Church Road, approximately where Chuck and Stella
Hollingsworth’s home is today. As it turned out, our
own Aunt Jane Gray found a picture of the church in the
house of her late mother-in-law, Daisy Pugh Gray.
The structure was built for a meeting house or
church between 1837 and 1852, but the congregation
officially became known as Bethany in 1848. The
church building had two entrance doors, one for men
and one for women.
Inez Lynn Daniels, daughter of George Charles
Daniels, wrote about attending services at the old
church. She recorded, “The men of mature years
occupied the upper left hand corner of the Old Church
in Wanchese. They did say ‘Amen’ occasionally if the
discourse was pleasing to their understanding. I can
look over the years and I seem to hear a lot of those old
‘Ameners’ giving ‘Amazing Grace, how sweet the
sound’…all the power of their lungs. They did put in a
lot of grace notes where they were not written in the
music, but they really had rhythm and gusto, if they
lacked time and strict adherence to the tempo. I often
wondered why the ladies sat in the middle or on the
right hand side away from their men folks. It was a rare
thing to see men and women go in church and sit
together.”
The old church was the hub of the community.
Certainly, they had their regular Sunday meetings.
Special functions such as weddings had to take place as
well as commemorations for holidays such as Easter and
Christmas. Perhaps gatherings were held on the
grounds with much celebrating, socializing, and food. In
the case of a death, funerals were not usually held at
the church as they are now. The deceased was kept at
home until a graveside service could be held.
The old church served the members well until our
present sanctuary was built in 1905.

THE GENEROSITY CYCLE God makes us rich in every way so we can be generous on every occasion, which will result in thanksgiving to God. ... God doesn't bless us to provide for our own needs; he blesses us so we can be generous.
