MARCH / 2014/165th Year / Permeable Virology / Ed Holloway + Peter Ayres

During my masters I have been engaged with two projects that deal with visibility and

security, addressing permeability and complex levels of access. For my second year

thesis project I worked with a site in Liverpool, developing a long-term proposal for a site

that had been carelessly and unsuccessfully altered over time. The project dealt with

the theme of contamination, and proposed fl exible disease research laboratories that

responded to issues relating to longevity. The scheme centred around a permanent vault,

that could remain on site after the laboratories, to preserve samples and specimens.

MARCH / 2014/164th Year / Alchemist’s Society / Mike Richards + Michael Holmes-Coates

My 4th year project looked at alchemy and I designed a headquarters for a secret

society. A series of interventions were hidden within historic buildings in Kent, to provide

the physical space for the practices of the alchemists. A second function for the buildings

presented an outward appearance, which ensured the maintenance of the secret and

a supply of potential new members for the society. The proposal used the forms and

materials of public areas as distractions, to avert the attention of the public, and allow

concealed circulation to provide access to hidden rooms.

CALLISON RTKL / 2015Stadio della Roma, Leisure Convivium

The stadium development for football club A.S Roma includes leisure facilities, retail and

catering streets, a business park as well as a new rail station and sporting village. I worked

in a team of 5 to develop the initial masterplan to planning stage for the 22,000sqm leisure

convivium, with units including a cinema and food market. My role in the project was

split between developing the 3D model whilst conducting various studies and iterations

of key features, and progressing 2D drawings that were precisely coordinated with other

consultants to ensure consistency, whilst maintaining the fast pace of the project.

INGLETON WOOD / 2013/2014Various projects at a multi-disciplinary company

My work covered all stages and was primarily for public sector projects, including

educational and healthcare buildings. I particularly enjoyed designing schemes in NHS

hospitals, were I worked on projects including a dementia-specialist ward and was able

to lead the design scheme for a foetal scanning unit. I have since continued to develop

my interest by researching Design for Wellbeing for my dissertation. Over the course of

my Part I experience I worked on refurbishment and interior design schemes as well as

new-build developments, at a range of sizes and budgets up to £2m.

A selection of work from my undergraduate studies, which included individual and

group work, for urban, landscape and masterplan modules. I experimented with a

range of software and modelling programmes, as well as sketching and hand drawing.

I particularly enjoyed using physical model making as a development tool and fi nal

presentation medium.
