I frequently tramped eight or ten miles throughthe deepest snow to keep an appointment witha beech tree, or a yellow birch, or an old ac-quaintance among the pines.

God, I wish I’d written that. More to the point,I wish I’d done that. And if I had done that, Iwish I would have had the courage to writethat.

I can conceive of no one in Goshen who has ac-tually done that, let alone written that. I canthink of no one in the entire world who has everdone that, except Henry David Thoreau, whonot only did that, but wrote that. Such . . .courage. Such strength . . . Such wisdom . . .

What a man . . . What a human being . . . Whata model for mankind . . .

I captured a bit of his experience this summer.Olga and I stayed at John and Linda’s B&B inLanark County, on the Clyde River near Perth,Ontario. In the morning, I announced my in-tention to take a walk in their woods, and Lindasaid, “We have a maple, which someone weknow, an arborist, has estimated as 425 yearsold.” Four hundred. Twenty-five. Years. Old.

Following a path, I found the tree. Or it may bethat the tree found me. For the first time in mylife, I appreciated the full meaning of that phrase“the fear of God”. I entered an alien presencethat transcended time, and space, and experi-ence. I heard nothing, saw nothing, but the sa-cred being. I was not afraid, I was alienated, Iwas suspended from sense of self, I was disen-franchised from hereditary membership in thehuman race. I felt the immense strength andwisdom enfold me.

I enfolded the tree. I put my arms around thetrunk as far as I could reach, which wasn’t thatfar.

I say that I was not afraid. I was not afraid of thetree. But I was afraid, of my utter, utter unwor-thiness. That was the fear of God.

Thoreau took a walk in the woods, once, andstayed two years, and wrote the memoirWalden, which became a bible of environmen-talism and alternative spirituality. Thoreau wentto jail once, and stayed overnight, and wrote itup as Civil Disobedience, which launched thenon-violent resistance movements of our time. And Thoreau visited trees.

Don't trust anything related to money or contracts today, Aquarius. This isn't a good day toenter into any kind of contract, whether it's starting an investment program, negotiating asalary, or changing banks. There's a lot of miscommunication and misunderstanding in theair. You may think you understand what you're signing, but you may not. Save legal and fi-nancial matters for another day.

This isn't the day for contracts or legal work of any kind, Pisces. You may think you un-derstand everything about a document, but it's likely you don't. The atmosphere is ripefor misinformation and misunderstanding. You will be well served today if you keep toyourself and do your work carefully and systematically. The legal documents can waitfor another day.

Trust your instincts regarding anyone you meet today, Aries. There are unethical peoplearound, and one of them may enter your circle. Entering into legal contracts or businessor personal partnerships of any kind is absolutely out of the question. Don't even go torenew your driver's license, as you're likely to fail the eye exam! Stay home and savecontracts and bureaucracy for another day.

If you wake up this morning and feel glued to the bed, perhaps that's where you shouldspend the day, Taurus. You've been working hard and long these past few weeks. It onlymakes sense that your body would rebel eventually. This is a day for rest and relaxation. The office will survive without you. Call in sick and then turn off the phone. You're likely tosleep better than you have in a long time.

Pay attention today, Gemini. There may be some unethical behavior occurring at work, andit could trigger some long-buried anger. You may have difficulty keeping your emotions incheck, but you need to. Honest communication is the only way you can get through thisday. Once you've calmed down, you might want to approach the person who's behaving ir-responsibly.

Check and double-check any information that comes your way today, Cancer. There'sdeception and discontent in the air, which is an unfortunate combination under any cir-cumstances. Research before you judge. Gossip is likely to fly around the office. Runfor cover when necessary. You don't want to get involved in this particular round of officepolitics.

Don't take your bank or portfolio statement at face value today, Leo. Financial errors arelikely. Someone may want you to see things from his or her viewpoint, which may not bebased on fact. Check and double-check important figures that cross your desk. You're theonly one you can trust to truly work in your best interests. It's time to put your mind to useand work on your own behalf.

You won't feel particularly social today, Virgo. You'd be happiest at home with a good book,a good meal, and no contact with the outside world. Alas, such solitude isn't always possible. You may have to balance your need for isolation with obligations to colleagues. Part of yourgrumpiness might be due to a physical imbalance. Make it an early night and you will waketomorrow with a new attitude.

All isn't quiet at home today, Libra. There's tension in the air. You can't shake the feelingthat someone is lying. You're a peacemaker by nature, so your inclination is to suppressyour suspicions. In this instance, your instincts are right. The person withholding informationis doing it for your own good and will come to you once the situation has been resolved. You can all laugh about it then.

It's strange how past incidents can still cause such pain in the present. Today you may feeloverwhelmed by memories of a particularly traumatic incident. No one is more surprisedthan you by your reaction. You felt sure you'd addressed this issue and put it behind you.Apparently there's still work to be done, Scorpio.

It's apparent that something underhanded and unethical is occurring at your job today, Sagit-tarius. Co-workers could try to manipulate situations and take advantage of proprietary in-formation to use to their own benefit. Steer clear of office politics and refrain fromparticipating in any gossip. Trust your instincts. You know who can and who can't be trusted.

Don't trust anyone today, not even people you consider friends, Capricorn. There are indi-cations of deception all around, especially at work. Someone may be keeping somethingfrom you or even manipulating information to his or her own advantage. Be sure to checkthe facts of any situation. Don't take anyone's word for anything. This is a good day to takeyour own advice rather than someone else's.

Previously on Stolen Town: After arresting Regan Bay, an international thief, SergeantFord discovers that a stranger’s body has been found on a trail in the woods. He calls alocal doctor to examine him.

The cot wasn’t the worse she’d laid on, Regan thought, but it could stillstand an improvement. It was the silence that was more boring than any-thing. Fortunately, that was about to be remedied. Regan had just finishedcounting the tiles on the ceiling of her cell when the door opened and apink frosted cupcake walked in. Or at least, the human version of one.

She was an older lady, curled greying hair arranged nicely on the top ofher head, wearing a white shirt with pale pink sleeves and a long skirt tomatch. She walked to her desk and deposited the envelopes and box shewas carrying before straightening and turning towards the jail cell. Thatwas when the lady noticed Regan.

“Oh! Hello there. You must be the thief the Sargent was talking about!”she came over to Regan’s cell and stuck her hand through the bars. “Hi.I’m Phyllis.”“Regan,” she said, taking the woman’s hand.Phyllis smiled. “I hope you don’t take this the wrong way but I’ve never

met a real thief before. You’re not what I pictured at all,” she said, thenadded. “Although that might be the point. Anyway, can I get you anything?Cup of coffee maybe?”Regan smiled. “Actually I wouldn’t say no to some water.”

Phyllis beamed. “Coming right up,” she said, returning with water, “So tellme about yourself ! Where are you from? What kinds of things have youstolen? And for goodness’s sake, what on earth brings you to Goldpine?”Regan took the water. “Unfortunately, the wrong bus brought me. I washoping to make a bit of a cleaner getaway than getting stopped here.”Phyllis tisked. “You’ll have to thank the sergeant for that. He doesn’t missmuch. He was a big city cop until his wife got killed.”

Regan’s ears perked up. She was about to ask Phyllis more when the chimeon the door rang. Giving her apologies, Phyllis turned and scooted to thefront desk just as someone came in. Not wanting an audience or any gawk-ers, Regan laid down on the cot again, face to the wall.

“Hi there! How can I help you?” Phyllis asked.“I was wondering if the sergeant was around. I’d like to talk to him.”Regan stilled. She knew that voice. It was a man’s voice, deep with a

subtle accent. Turning very slowly, she snuck a look.

Well, well, well, thought Regan, it’s a small world after all.

RYAN & THE MOVIESWonder Park

Wonder Park certainly has a conceptthat lends itself to an imaginative an-imated movie, but the final result iscloser to a fast-moving roller coasteryou just want to get off of before get-ting too dizzy. Every single scene isdirected, by an uncredited DylanBrown and later David Feiss, at topspeed and the movie rarely slows

down for a breather. Outside of a few musical montages, the characters are frequently yammering away and whatthey’re saying isn’t particularly insightful or funny. Themovie is so concerned with losing the audience’s atten-tion span that it keeps whizzing by at a disorienting pace.Even the attempts at emotion don’t register in a satisfyingway and seems almost misguided at times. An animatedseries will reportedly follow on Nickelodeon later this yearand a television show might be better suited to the fast-paced antics of this amusement park than a feature-length motion picture.
