With more than 45 years of experience in the local market, FEMOGLAS is a consolidated leader in the manufacturing and commercialization of Grating in Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester (FRP) FEMOGLAS which features products with excellent corrosion-resistance characteristics combined with superb mechanical resistance, as well as an extensive service life and safety, FEMOGLAS has established a standard in t h e manufacturing of gratings in f i b e r g l a s s r e i n f o r c e d p o l y e s t e r . This product has proved to be a more durable and r e l i a b l e a l t e r na t i ve , even under conditions of severe corrosion. FEMOGLAS offers more than 16 different models of gratings and two manufacturing systems: pultruded andinjection-molded gratings. Both types of gratings are lightweight and easyto install. The pultruded gratings tolerate heavy loads and are corrosionresistant. There is no product comparable to molded grating in terms of resisting the effects of corrosion, high impact and vehicle traffic.
Corrosion resistant - Unidirectionaland b id i rect ional mechanical res is tance - Fire retardant - Non conductive - Long service life - Maintenance free - Impact resistant - Low installation costs - Skid-proof - Lightweight , the best alternative, economical. Fiberglass reinforced polyester FEMOGLAS gratings is superior to conventional metal gratings, since it is based on a special design concept that results in a highly corrosion-resistant product that is maintenance free with a long service life. Thanks to its ligth weight (less than half that of steel gratings) and its easy-to-manufacture feature, the installation costs are less expensive. Steel gratings, on the other hand, requires special and expensive lifting equipment time-consuming cutting and welding processes . The fabrication of FEMOGLAS gratings, however, demands less time and labor and only requieres the use of simple manual tools for its installation. The time and money saved in labor and
equipment often results in an installation price equal to that of steel grating. However, if considering the maintainance-free and long service life features offered by FEMOGLAS Gratings, it is a considerable less expensive option.
Grat ings, i t is aconsiderable lessexpensive opt ion.

In the beginning of the Industrial age, corrosion was one of the main concerns of engineers and plant designers, at the time of material selection resulting in extremely high maintenance costs and low productivity due to operation shutdowns due to replacements. FEMOGLAS Gratings, manufactured with reinforced plastic, represents a landmark contribution to safety and an effective solution to the corrosion problem. Our technology enables us to offer more than 16 different types of floor grating models, which are either standard modules or made-to-order upon request; and are manufactured according to the operating conditions of Polyester, Vinylester or other resin
systems. A fire-retardant feature may also be added into the FEMOGLAS floor Grating in compliance to the ASTM E-84 Class 1

Evolutionary Process of Fiberglass-Reinforced Plastic Floor Gratings
Second Generation
First Generation
The second generation of grating was manufactured using the open-mold method. The advantages of this method were resin-rich surfaces, improved presentation and lower labor costs. The disadvantages, however, were low fiberglass content and high air-bubble content. Deterioration due to ultraviolet rays was improved by introducing a UV inhibitor.
The third generation of grating was manufactured using the compression-molded method, a more-improved version of the open-molded method. The advantages of this type of grating were higher fiberglass content, resin-rich surfaces and fewer, smaller air bubbles. However, it did not feature grid versatility, the fiberglass content was still too low and the ultraviolet-ray deterioration problem could only be solved by introducing a UV ray inhibitor.
Third Generation
9
The first generation of gratings were manufactured manually. It was a Roving compound, interlocked and saturated with a resin to create a grating without using a mold. The advantages of this type of gratings were non-metallic products resistant to corrosion due to a resin-rich surface. The disadvantages were: high labor costs, low fiberglass content resulting in mechanical defects, poor quality, many air bubbles and a rough, wrinkled appearance. Ultraviolet-ray deterioration was also a problem.

Evolutionary Process of Fiberglass-Reinforced Plastic Floor Gratings
11
The sixth generation of grating is injection-molded. The location of the pre-stressed reinforced parts and the resin result in a top-quality, highly corrosion-resistant product that cannot be
duplicated by other manufacturing methods at the same cost. This type of grating is highly
resistant to corrosion as well as ultraviolet-ray deterioration. Its monolythic structure using
different-design grids makes it such a versatile product that it cannot be reproduced by other
manufacturing systems.
Sixth generation
Fifth Generation
The fourth generation of grating was manufactured using pultruded components. For the first
time, an engineer design mold was employed. This generation of grating offered a higher
fiberglass content (up to 70%) with greater resistance and less mechanical defects. The air bubbles were eliminated, improving the products quality. Versatility in terms of size was
limitless. The increased resistance of the pultruded grating allowed the use of the same
thickeners used in metal gratings and often without the need of additional supports. One of the
disadvantages of the first pultruded grating was a less resin-rich surface, resulting in poor
corrosion resistance and possible lengthwise cracks in the metal load bars, since they were
only made from unidirectional resistant fiberglass. The assembly method of the metal load bars
was not very structurally effective. Likewise, the high fiberglass content of the load bars
surface resulted in poor resistance to ultraviolet rays. At this stage, some believed that the
molded grating was the best option in terms of corrosion-resistant, easy-to-manufacture
grating. However, if a very strong, low corrosion-resistant grating was needed, pultruded
Fourth Generation
The fifth generation of grating is a pultruded-bar design assembled with pultruded cotters, thus
mechanically obtaining the best of both manufacturing processes (Molded and Pultruded Grating). Each bar in this generation of grating is reinforced with a compact center of continuous fiber
rovings covered by a continuous mat and protective veil. The continuous fiber rovering center
gives the grating its strength and lengthwise rigidity. The continuous mat provides the structure
with transversal resistance, protecting it from surface scrapes, indentations and linear cracks.
The protective veil covers 100% of the structures surface with resin, making it highly resistant to
corrosion and ultraviolet rays.
The assemly system does not call for thermoplastic separators, thus the bars are assembled in
a continuous pultruded bar that mechanically closes and chemically joins the supporting bars.

Pultruded Grating ProcessIn the matrix, the resin is cured so as to be molded into a permanently reinforced piece that can be cut into specified lengths. This process results in lightweight products with a high fiberglass content, an optimal level of resistance, dimensional stability
and thermal/electrical non conductivity. The structures durable shape results in a
maintainance free and long service life where normaly steel, aluminium, wood or non-industr ia l manual ly manufactured structures are traditionally specified. Today, pultruded grating is very successful for use in highly
corrosive applications, whereas stainless steel or other costly
components were usually used.
This is a c o n t i n u o u s m a n u f a c t u r i n g process of structural plastic fiberglass-reinforced grating. In this process, the fiberglass rovings are strategically placed and pulled through a liquid resin that covers and saturates them. The resin-fiberglass combination is continually drawn and pulled (pultruded) through a hot mold that
