STANLY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

PHI BETA LAMBDA / Chapter #6620

ALBEMARLE, NORTH CAROLINA

2018-2019 LOCAL CHAPTER ANNUAL BUSINESS REPORT

Editors: Britney Pouch, Monica Chang, Giselle Chavez

February 27, 2019

Chapter Members:

As Stanly Community College Phi Beta Lambda Chapter President, I am pleased to present our

Local Chapter Annual Business Report. We have worked hard to “Create, Lead and Inspire” during

this forty-fifth year of our chapter. We have been involved in local, state, and national PBL

activities in addition to being visible on our campus and in the community as we have met the goals

at our organization.

Two of the highlights of the year are the election of Giselle Chavez as a state officer and Amy Ray

as a national officer. Giselle Chavez graduated last year with a Business Administration degree and

is now in the Graphics Arts and Design curriculum. She serves as Central Region Vice President

and has attended all of the required state meetings. Amy Ray was president of our chapter in 2016-

17 and then transferred to UNC-Charlotte. As a Virtual Chapter member, she has continued to be

active in our chapter activities, and we were excited to work on her successful campaign for

national treasurer in Baltimore last summer.

Our chapter has participated in a myriad of activities including attending the 2018 State Leadership

Conference and National Conference in Baltimore in June. We were excited to be on the awards

stage for both the Parliamentary Procedure team and our annual report. For me personally,

presenting our Business Person of the Year award to Nancee Bowers was a highlight of the year.

Her remarks to us about working and dreaming were very inspirational. This report will detail

those and the other campus, community, and PBL activities of the year.

Thanks to our adviser, Mr. H, for always being there to guide us, push us, drive us, and feed us!

We also thank the Stanly Community College Student Government Association and the college

administration for their encouragement and support.

My best wishes to our members attending the upcoming State Leadership Conference and then the

2019 National Leadership Conference in San Antonio in June. With one another and through the

year’s program and projects, we hope to continue “creating, leading, and inspiring” throughout

successful futures.

Monica Chang, SCC PBL President

Established in July 1971, Stanly Community College was established in July 1971. Seated and

online enrollment is approximately 3,245, and business-related curriculums include Business

Administration, Accounting, and Information Systems Networking. The SCC PBL chapter was

chartered in 1974 and has attended every State Leadership Conference, 41 of 43 National

Leadership Conferences, and the chapter has received state and national “Gold Seal Chapter”

designations 38 years! Albemarle, North Carolina, is the county seat of Stanly County, located

approximately 45 miles east of Charlotte, and the city population is approximately 15,000. The

economy has transitioned from a traditionally textile and agriculture community to mobile home,

as well as cotton and poultry industries. An increasing number of residents travel to Charlotte to

work, especially business graduates, who find employment in the many banks in Charlotte.

Seven county commissioners comprise the decision-making group for Stanly County. Stanly

Community College PBL was pleased to have Martha Sue Harris Hall, the 1981chapter

president, elected as the first woman elected as a commissioner (1994).

“Create, Lead, Inspire” Brochures: “Create, Lead, Inspire” has been the membership recruitment

theme for the year. Membership brochures and membership forms were distributed to business-

related classes. The cover used the official theme logo and included pictures from the 2017-18

year. Additional text issued an “invitation” to join PBL and basics about the organization. This

theme was repeated throughout recruitment materials and displays including a bulletin board in the

Snyder and Patterson Buildings, where business classes are held.

Chapter Social Media: A chapter Instagram account continued to facilitate communication of

chapter news and events in a social media format to reach online students. Business cards with

social media links have been distributed at recruitment events and networking opportunities have

been made available. A marquee at the campus entrance displays up-to-date information on PBL

activities, and a brochure with a list of PBL competitive events was distributed in all business-

related classes during February. The brochure was sent electronically to all enrolled students. Display Cases and Bulletin Board: Located on the second floor of the Snyder Building at SCC

are trophies, plaques, and awards received by the chapter over its history. Included are the 1974

chartering certificate and the newest item, the 2018 state and national Gold Seal Chapter plaques.

The large display is one of the best recruitment tools for the chapter. A nearby large bulletin board

is used to display chapter photos, recruitment brochures, and news articles.

College Cable TV Station, Website, and Facebook, E-blast, Calendar and Newsflush:

Announcements regarding Phi Beta Lambda activities and membership were carried throughout the

year on the campus closed circuit television monitors located in the entries to each building and the

campus cafeteria. These are carried on the local cable station, SCC TV – Channel 21. The

homepage of the Stanly Community College website carries all the news articles that have been

released about the college. Throughout the year, numerous articles and pictures about PBL were

listed and archived, again providing valuable recruitment materials for potential members as they

checked the website. A banner on the homepage promoted National PBL Week and had a “for

more information about PBL” link including a photo gallery of 150 PBL pictures. The SCC

“Newsflush,” posted in campus bathrooms, carried PBL announcements, and PBL items were

placed on the monthly college activities calendar received by all students.

State Recruitment Award: At the 2018 Fall Leadership Conference, Stanly Community College

entered the “Presidents’ Award” competition for the best display of recruitment materials. The

display won Second Place. After the conference, it was displayed outside the college library.

2018 State Leadership Development Conference The 64th

Annual State Leadership Conference

was held in Charlotte, North Carolina, April 4-6, 2018, at the Hilton Charlotte University Place.

The theme for the conference was “Elevate Your Future.” Several former SCC PBL officers and

Professional Division-Foundation members attended the event and helped judge the competitive

events. In addition to the business and competitive events activities, the conference included an

SLC Leadership Development series featuring eight workshops. Delegates attending at least four

of the sessions received certificates recognizing their participation in this program. Four delegates

from the chapter participated in the series and received certificates. Chapter members also

designed and worked at the campaign booths for our candidate for state office.

2018 Stanly Community College Leadership and Honors Ceremony: The Annual SCC Student

Leadership Convocation and Luncheon for 2018 was held in May. PBL President Britney Pouch

was one of seven students selected to be recognized for their leadership roles in campus activities

and organizations during the year. Each recipient was presented with a college medallion. Four

PBL members were selected to serve as the Honors Ceremony marshals.

2108 Fall Leadership Development Conference: Stanly Community College had ten members

and two advisers at the State Phi Beta Lambda Fall Leadership Conference at the Clarion Hotel in

Greensboro on November 9-10. “Create, Lead, Inspire” was the theme. SCC members

participated in networking, idea exchange sessions, and workshops. The workshop sessions

included topics related to Leadership Development, Business/Entrepreneurship, Career Preparation,

Community Service, and PBL Development, and delegates could attend a cross section of topics or

put together a complete track on those areas. SCC was presented with the “Gold Star Chapter”

award for accomplishing a list of state goals by the October 20 initial membership reporting date.

Chapter President Britney Pouch accepted the “Gold Star” award from Ms. Bobbie Brown, North

Carolina PBL’s first state president, when she was a student in 1954 at East Carolina University.

The chapter’s team in the “PBL NON-Trivia Contest” on organization information was one of the

three finalists, and the chapter’s display won Second Place. The planning and execution of all

these activities were definite leadership building ones.

Election, Officer Planning Meetings, Installation: Returning members met in August at

RiverWild Restaurant for a social and to plan for the year. Officers were nominated and elected in

September. Professional Division member and former chapter and state president Katrina Sams

spoke at the installation service and conducted the ceremony, which was held at the Stanly County

Small Business Center Board Room.

College Spring Fling and Fall Fest: Chapter representatives were leaders with the planning and

activities of the year’s two major all-campus activities, Spring Fling and Fall Fest. Spring Fling

had a Disney movie theme, and PBL member Shiny Vang prepared a large painting of a cottage in

an enchanted forest. Seven members dressed as the seven dwarfs, Ms. Chaney dressed perfectly as

Snow White, and Mr. Hazlett wore a “Prince Charming –Really?!” sign. Apples were hidden and

prizes given when they were found and brought to the PBL booth. For Fall Fest, each organization

was in charge of a game to go along with the “Halloween Carnival” theme. PBL members assisted

with setting up the activities and the clean-up afterward.

Rick Gardner “Meet and Greet”: To inspire students, a new project of the college’s Student

Government Association is for each student organization to bring a successful alumnus on campus

for a meeting that the entire campus is invited to. In February, PBL had a “Meet and Greet” in the

Student Life Center with Rick Gardner, now an executive with Ahold/Delhaize, the parent

company of Food Lion grocery stores. Mr. Gardner served as chapter president in 1983 and state

president in 1984. He was the college’s Outstanding Alumnus Award recipient in 2009.

Free Enterprise Day Display: On November 15, American Free Enterprise Day, the chapter did a

large display outside the college library with pictures of jobs that no longer exist, a list of new job

titles (Mood Manager, Disaster Manager, etc.), and a quiz matching job titles with job descriptions.

The quiz was distributed during the November Student Government Association lunch meeting.

Career Exploration and Preparation

Page 9: Parliamentary Procedure team convincing Mr. H …...College Cable TV Station, Website, and Facebook, E-blast, Calendar and Newsflush: Announcements regarding Phi Beta Lambda activities

8

Academy of Career Exploration: PBL members did registration and had a booth at the Academy

of Career Exploration done for the community at the local civic center. The evening was co-

sponsored by Stanly Community College and the County School System. Local businesses and

industries had displays and provided door prizes. The PBL booth was at the entrance and featured

the pictures of jobs that no longer exist that were used for Free Enterprise Day on campus.

March of Dimes: Little Tokyo Restaurant and Eastgate Cinema provided gift cards to be used for

March of Dimes promotions.

Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Development Association, Small Business Center Tour: On

November 15 , in recognition of American Enterprise Day, SCC PBL toured the Stanly County

Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Development and Small Business Center, and the

Albemarle Downtown Development Corporation, all located in the center of Albemarle. At each

location, the president or director spoke to the group about the work of the organization and its

influence on job growth. Ms. Kathy Almond, 1982 SCC PBL president, is the recently-selected

president of the Albemarle/Stanly County Chamber of Commerce, and former PBL member Alicia

Herrin is director of the Small Business Center.

Voter Registration: In cooperation with the Student Government Association and county Board

of Elections, PBL members manned a voter registration booth outside the college library.

NCEd: During 2018-2019, NCEd, a state organization, set a goal of having directors spend a day

at each of North Carolina’s community colleges. For the Stanly Community College visit, the

college president started the day with Mr. Hazlett talking about how PBL student prepared students

for careers by providing experiences beyond the classroom. A packet of news articles on the

chapter, a list of the state officers from SCC, and a list of national awards received by the chapter

since it was chartered in 1974 was distributed. During the afternoon, Monica Chang, Giselle

Chavez, and Britney Pouch from PBL shared their experiences as students and campus leaders.

Charlotte Maness Scholarship: Ms. Charlotte Maness is a local business leader who opened her

own HR consulting business after retiring from a banking career. In 2014, she was the chapter’s

Business Person of the Year and was selected for the state honor. This year, the chapter nominated

Ms. Maness, long-time judge and workshop leader for state conferences, for the state Professional

Division Distinguished Service Award, and she was selected. On her 80th

birthday, her family did

an SCC scholarship in her honor, and she asked that it be presented to the school in appreciation of

PBL and the how the chapter had developed so many local business leaders.

NCPBL Event Sponsors: The chapter obtained $300 state competitive event sponsorships from

ScanOnline (Locust, North Carolina) and Premiere Fibers, Inc. (Wadesboro, North Carolina).

Since campus guidelines limit organization fund-raising projects, the college has been extremely

generous to PBL in providing funds for state and national conferences. Registration, hotel, and

travel expenses of nearly $8,000 were covered for the 2018 State Leadership Conference, the 2018

National Leadership Conference in Baltimore, the 2018 State Fall Leadership Development

Conference, and the up-coming 2019 State Leadership Conference. The college allows PBL the

exception of collecting at Fall Fest and Spring Fling for March of Dimes. The treasury of the

chapter is handled through the SCC Fiscal Affairs Office. Chapter dues are $25 ($5 local, $10

state, $10 national). From chapter dues, $35 contributions are made to the NCPBL Professional

Division-Foundation, Inc., scholarship and general funds. The chapter received a $1000 donation

toward national conference attendance from Food Lion for winning the state food drive contest.

Local Newspapers, Radio: Throughout the year PBL submitted information on the chapter to the

SCC public information officer, who prepared releases for approximately 20 area newspapers and

radio stations. The local newspaper also carried photographs with the releases on a number of

articles, including the chapter’s participation in conferences, the Business Person of the Year

selection, and awards won by the chapter. The local cable station carried live coverage of the

County Commissioners’ meeting at which PBL members spoke.

National Publicity: The national FBLA-PBL “Faces of FBLA-PBL” poster featured a picture of

the chapter’s adviser and president holding national awards following the national conference

awards program.

Campus Publicity and SCC Website/Instagram: PBL announcements are carried often on the

SCC electronic marquee at the campus entrance, as well as SCC’s “Newsflush” flyers that are

posted monthly in campus bathrooms. The “Newsflush” for September included the PBL “Create,

Lead, Inspire” logo, and the February one had a “PBL Week” headline. Once each semester, the

chapter is allowed to send an email “blast” to all registered students; these included membership

brochures. Articles about PBL are carried on the college’s website under the “news release”

listing on the front page. These are also archived. In February, a website banner related to “PBL

Month” linked to a membership brochure and additional information on PBL. The college’s

Instagram page carries pictures of PBL activities often.

New “SOAR” Student Organization & Activities Recognition TV Show: The college’s Student

Government Association, in conjunction with the Marketing Director, created a new show entitled

“SOAR” (Student Organization & Activities Recognition) this year. The first show featured PBL.

President Monica Chang, State Vice President Giselle Chavez, and our adviser talked about chapter

activities, and the leadership opportunities available to students.

Phi Beta Lambda State Newsletter: SCC submitted articles for the state “Chapter News”

website sections for both fall and spring. The fall edition featured pictures of the SCC delegation

at the national conference. The Spring 2018 newsletter featured pictures of chapter delegates at the

County Commissioners’ meeting to have an FBLA-PBL Week Proclamation signed and the

presentation of the Business Person of the Year award. The Fall 2018 edition featured pictures

from the national conference and information on fall activities.

Campus On-going PBL Promotions: In addition to recruitment, the chapter used a large bulletin

board in the main hallway of the Snyder Building (where seated and hybrid classes are held) for

PBL promotions. An additional display with the chapter’s state and national awards are housed in

the Snyder Building lobby. Copies of news articles, pictures from PBL activities, and

announcements are posted. PBL had representatives gave reports at every monthly Student

Government Association meeting during the year.

honor of Business Person of the Year Nancee Bowers and the Foundation Scholarship Fund in

honor of Ms. Jean Buckley, President and CEO of the national FBLA-PBL organization to honor

her up-coming retirement. PBL recognized Mr. Oelfke during a monthly SGA meeting. The

SCC chapter made contacts to obtain sponsorships for two of the state competitive events. The

sponsorships from ScanOnline and Premiere Fibers comes from making $300 donations each to

the Foundation.

March of Dimes: SCC PBL raised funds for March of Dimes and will received recognition at

the 2018 national conference.

Community Service Day Project at Community Homeless Shelter: The chapter is doing its national Community Service Day project by serving a spaghetti dinner at the local homeless shelter on March 23. Members have details planned.

Day with a framed picture of him surrounded by the chapter’s Parliamentary Procedure team

following their performance that won Sixth Place at the national conference and an engraved

trophy for his office.

TLLA – NCPBL’s “The Legacy Leadership Award”: The Legacy Leadership Award is

presented to chapters that have met a list of local, state, and national goals and is presented at the

opening session of the State Leadership Conference and all members of TLLA chapters receive

special ribbons for their nametags. SCC is one of two chapters who have received the award

each year since it began in 1989. Requirements have been met for 2019 recognition.

Conference.

National FBLA-PBL Month and Connecting Chapters: The SCC PBL chapter drafted a

Proclamation for the Stanly County Board of Commissioners to sign recognizing National

FBLA-PBL Week. The chapter invited officers of the Pfeiffer University PBL chapter and the

West Stanly High School FBLA chapter to join them at the Commissioners meeting for the

presentation. The commissioners meeting is televised. A banner on SCC’s website recognized

12

Business Person of the Year Program The chapter nominated Ms. Hanh Tran for the 2018

State Business Person of the Year award. Ms. Tran is the owner of two Little Tokyo restaurants

in Albemarle and is involved in many community activities. Although the chapter’s nominee did

not win the state award, the chapter was excited that the winner was Ahold/Delhaize/Food Lion

Executive Rick Gardner, a former Stanly chapter president. Ms. Nancee Bowers, owner of

Albemarle Nutrition, was selected as the chapter’s Business Person of the Year for 2019 and was

nominated for the state honor.

Partnered Projects with SGA: The chapter has been an active partner with the college’s

Student Government Association in doing community service projects involved in community

service projects during the year. These included a blood drives, donating food pantry items,

collections money for the county Pregnancy Resource Center, and a coat drive preceding

Christmas. PBL’ers Britney Pouch, Monica Chang, and Giselle Chavez represented PBL on the

SGA Board of Senators and coordinated the chapter’s participation.

SCC “Halloween on the Hill” and “Holiday on the Hill”: Two major community activities

that PBL assisted with were the “Halloween on the Hill” and “Holiday on the Hill” evenings. On

Halloween, members helped decorate the campus and provide activities for a safe Halloween for

local children. Candy was distributed at various places. PBL members also assisted with the

clean-up afterward. In December, a similar “Holiday on the Hill” activity was held. In addition

to campus decorations, Santa was present for pictures with the children. Both activities attracted

large crowds.

NC FBLA: To assist NC Future Business Leaders of America, chapter members judged Gold

Seal Chapter applicants. Giselle Chavez assisted with competitive events at the state FBLA

conference, and Mr. Hazlett led a workshop on business etiquette entitled “Watch Your P’s &

Q’s!” Giselle and Mr. Hazlett also led a workshop for the high school seniors in attendance at

the conference on what to expect at college and how PBL can help the transition from high

school to college.

Food Lion’s “Put Hunger Out of Business” and West Stanly Christian Ministries: A major

project of the chapter was the “Put Hunger Out of Business” campaign sponsored by Food Lion

Grocery Store’s “Food Lion Feeds” program and the NC PBL Professional Division-Foundation

Board of Directors. Over a two-week period, the SCC chapter collected over a thousand pounds

of canned food to contribute to West Stanly Christian Ministries. Members did promotional

brochures and campus announcements and then placed blue buckets at the doors of the primary

buildings. Based on the amount collected and the score on a ten-slide PowerPoint presentation

showing the marketing strategies used in the collection, Stanly Community College and Catawba

College tied for First Place in the competition, with each chapter receiving $1000 to use toward

attending the PBL national conference. A picture of Britney Pouch with the ceremonial check

given at the State Leadership Conference was used in various college publications

2018 State Leadership Conference Stanly Community College has attended the NCPBL State

Leadership Conference every year since being chartered in 1974. SCC had 14 delegates

registered for the 64th

Annual SLC, held April 5-7 in Charlotte. Special guest at the conference

was national officer Nick Western, as well as Ms. Janice Simmons, widow of former State

Adviser Bob Simmons, who presented the 2018 “The Legacy Leadership Awards.”

2018 National Leadership Conference Baltimore, Maryland, was the site of the 2018

National Leadership Conference, and SCC had eight delegates registered. During the conference,

Mr. Hazlett administered the Business Decision Making and Future Business Executive events.

Britney Pouch and Monica Chang were voting delegates, and Giselle Chavez, as a state officer,

presided at the state meetings held during NLC. While in Baltimore, chapter members also

toured historic sites at Baltimore Harbour. Chapter members worked diligently at the campaign

booth for North Carolina’s candidate for national office, Amy Ray. Amy graduated from Stanly

Community College and was chapter president. At the time of the election, she had transferred

to University of North Carolina Charlotte. SCC assisted her with printing for the campaign. At

the close of the conference, Amy was announced as the winning candidate for national treasurer.

She is the second Stanly student to serve as a national officer. Chris McDaniel served as

Southern Region Vice President for the 1992-93 PBL year.

2018 Fall Leadership Development Conference: SCC has been represented at every state fall

conference since the conferences began in 1975, and the campus hosted the 1981 and 1986

conferences. The 2018 North Carolina Fall Leadership Development Conference was held

November 9-10 at the Greensboro Wyndham Hotel. Monica Chang, Giselle Chavez, Austin

Miller, Lydia Miller, Robin Shepherd, Saraida Henriquiz, Erin Tillman, and Mr. Hazlett were the

SCC delegates. All members participated in the leadership workshops.

NCPBL “Summits”: The NCPBL “Chapter Officer Preparation Summit” was canceled

because of a hurricane that moved across the state that day. The “State Conference Preparation

Summit” was held February 7 at Catawba College, and the chapter had three delegates in

attendance. Giselle Chavez, state officer, presided and presented one of the sections of the

program.

2018 and 2019 FBLA State Leadership Conference Katrina Sams and Mr. Hazlett attended

the 2018 FBLA State Leadership Conferences. Katrina, as state PBL president, brought

greetings. Mr. Hazlett led a workshop on Parliamentary Procedures and along with state officer

Angela Lore a workshop on what PBL is and the value of joining. Both worked with
