Dear Brothers and Sisters,
This coming Saturday, August 15th is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Mother
of God. It is a beautiful Feast recalling the fact that the Lord took the body of the most holy
virgin to Heaven so as to preserve it from any corruption. All her life our Blessed Mother lived
a completely pure and holy life, free from any sin. Even the original sin never stained her soul.
It was only right and fitting, therefore that this most pure woman, the New Eve should be tak-
en up to Heaven body and soul. Her assumption reminds us all of the dignity of our bodily
existence and that someday we too will participate in the Resurrection even in our mortal bod-
ies if we are found worthy. Our Lord will judge whether we are worthy to enter into eternal
life or not. Let’s pray and do all that we can to co-operate with God’s saving graces so as to die
in the state of grace. It is Our Lady, Queen and Mother who dispenses those graces as Medi-
atrix. Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary pray for us.
Mass on the 15th will be at 8:30 a.m. and it will be celebrated as a sung Latin Mass.
Ignatius Greene, will receive his First Holy Communion and Johnny and Isabel Thomas, will
be confirmed. The confirmations will occur before the Mass begins. Bishop Monforton has
given us Pastors permission this year to officiate at the Confirmations. Because the Assump-
tion falls this year on a Saturday the obligation to attend Mass for the Holy Day has been lift-
ed. Of course, with the pandemic that obligation was lifted anyway. However, I would en-
courage you to assist at Holy Mass that day at 8:30 a.m. to honor the most pure Mother of God
on her great Feast day. It is traditional to prepare for that Feast by praying a nine-day novena
and perhaps even fasting the day before the Feast.
We have about twenty candidates for Confirmation on September 19th at the 5:00 p.m.
Sunday Vigil Mass. We were not able to prepare these candidates completely like we would
have liked to do. I would ask that the candidates and their sponsors and parents spend the
next month really trying to spiritually open their hearts to the coming of the Holy Spirit on the
day of the Confirmation. How can this be done? I suggest spending time every day in prayer,
especially the holy rosary. Daily Mass if possible is also suggested as well as reading of Holy
Scripture and meditating on the inspired message contained in the Bible. Also, reading the life of a saint, either a biography or an autobiography. Some of the candidates have been away
from the Sacraments now for more than four months and I am concerned about their spiritual
lives. Receiving the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation is so important. I
always recommend receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation once a month and Holy Com-
munion as often as possible but receiving Our Eucharistic Lord without a grave sin on the
soul. A grave sin is any mortal sin committed with full knowledge and consent. If you have a
doubt about whether a particular sin is mortal you can ask me in the confessional and I will
give you the straight answer. You can also consult the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Re-
ception of Holy Communion in a state of mortal sin is a sacrilege which greatly offends Al-
mighty God. When I give the Sacrament of Confirmation on September 19th I would like to do
so to candidates who have truly prepared themselves for this great Sacrament. The grace of
Confirmation if received worthily can fill the soul with strength in fighting the Christian battle
of life. It can endow the soul with the gifts of the Holy Spirit and make those who receive the
Sacrament truly ready to give witness to Jesus Christ, even at the cost of their lives. Confirma-
tion helps the Christian believer to fully participate in the mission of the Church. Having re-
ceived Baptism and the Holy Eucharist the Christian who is confirmed has been fully initiated
into the Christian way of life. If anyone would like to wait until next year to receive Confirma-
tion instead of this year please let me know.
May God bless each and every one of you this week.
Sincerely yours,
Father Timothy Davison

The Assumption (August 15) refers to the Blessed Virgin Mary being assumed — body and soul — into heaven at the end of her earthly life. “Assumption” is different than “ascension” be-cause one is passive (i.e. one is assumed) and the other is active (i.e. one ascends). It is by the power of God Mary was assumed.
As evidenced by the writings of many early Church fathers, Christians have believed for more than a millennium that the Blessed Vir-gin was assumed into heaven. In 1950, Pope Pius XII issued Munificentissimus Deus, which officially defined the Dogma of the Assumption. This means that the Church officially recognizes this belief as a true and necessary part of our Catho-lic beliefs about Mary. Like all beliefs about Mary, they illuminate our most treasured beliefs about her Son. The Assumption illustrates to us the truth about Christ’s promise of eternal life and the resurrection of the faithful.
