Dear Parishioners of St. anthony of Padua church & annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary church,

Men’s ACTS RETREATWe are happy today to welcome the Men’s ACTS Retreat [April 4 – 7, 2019] at the 11:00 a.m. return mass. I appreciate all parishioners’ concerns and prayers for the retreat. I also appreciate those who made

the retreat. Let us be one in thanking and praising God for His good work in our lives.

Confessions before the Easter TriduumWe have a Tri-Parish Lenten Penance Service in Eunice on Monday, April 14, 2019 at St. Anthony Church at 6:00 p.m. We ordinarily have confessions on Saturday at St. Anthony beginning at 3:00 p.m. ending 15 minutes before the 4:00 p.m. mass. Confessions are heard before other masses at both Annunciation and St. Anthony 30 minutes before masses and ending 15 minutes before mass. e last day for confessions before the Easter Triduum is Wednesday, April , 2 . Confessions resume on Easter Monday, April 22, 2019. Parishioners are encouraged to prepare for the Easter Triduum and Easter by striving to meet Jesus in the Sacrament of Reconciliation that is Confession before the Easter Triduum.

CRS Rice BowlsContinuing our Lenten Journey, please keep the CRS Rice Bowls in mind. Visit crsricebowl.org to view videos of people whose lives are touched by your support of CRS Rice Bowl. You can also find fun activities for your family. As Lent comes to a close, please place your Rice Bowl sacrificial contribution in an envelope. A second collection will be taken up next Sunday, April / , 2 . We ask you to place your sacrificial contribution in this second collection at both Annunciation and St. Anthony. May God bless you for your loving sacrifice!

WHY DO WE DO THAT? –CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

Question: Lent always seems to help me renew my relationship with God and strengthen my religious practice. Do you have any suggestions as to what I could do to achieve that the rest of the year?

Answer: The obvious answer may seem to be to do whatever you do during Lent all year-round. But part of the power of Lent is that we focus as a community on renewing our faith and preparing for Easter. Our Lenten practices have a purpose and a goal. Therein lies the secret. When we focus our efforts on one virtue, try to change one bad habit, or seek to deepen our understanding of one aspect of faith, we focus our efforts and give our full attention to what we are trying to accomplish. We tend to

be more successful achieving our goals. More importantly, it has a ripple effect in our lives: one thing changes or is added to the spiritual mix of our lives and many aspects are changed.

All too often, we leave our spiritual growth to chance and the practice of faith to habit, and then wonder why we have no sense of growth or progress. Think of it in terms of exercise. We walk, lift weights, and bend and stretch to attain the maximum benefit from what we do. In addition, to keep those benefits, we eat healthful food and get enough vitamins and rest. Spirituality requires the same kind of attention: we pray, fast, read the Bible, receive sacraments, and do charitable work to maximize the benefits of practicing faith. Keeping Lent year-round keeps us in spiritual shape!

Gospel for the Fifty Sunday of Lent, Year C – John : -

“The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle.” The episode of the woman caught in adultery is a powerful story. We have perhaps all felt as the woman has at some point in our lives, surrounded by those who would condemn us. The beauty of Christ’s mercy at the end is clear ... and a welcome relief as we all struggle to be good and holy people. But have we ever imagined ourselves on the edge of the circle? Have we pictured ourselves in the sea of dusty robes? Perhaps, we hope, we’re hovering at the edge of the circle of judgment. But we’ve all been there. How easy it is to be righteous when someone else’s reputation is at stake. When the small child is acting up in the grocery store or on the plane. When another company has a scandal break or a major error sets back their profits. Could it be easy to pick up the stone and feel its weight and mass in our hands? Because if we’ve got a stone in our hands, our own righteous category is clear. Our judgment is our insurance that we won’t be on the receiving end of the criticism. If we can point out a wrong, surely we are firmly in the right.

“’Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her’ ... they went away one by one.” This Lent, not only are we invited to receive God’s mercy, but to show God’s mercy. As the season begins to wind to a close, consider those in your life you tend to judge the most harshly. What is one concrete way you can drop your stone?

Masses for the Week

The Stations of the Cross are celebrated at St. Anthony Church on Fridays during Lent at 12:00 p.m. At Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church the Stations are celebrated on Fridays of Lent at 5:30 p.m.

Stations of the cross

the future restoration of Israel: “Remember not the things of the past ... see, I am doing something new!” When have you experienced a new beginning in your own spiritual journey?

Second Reading – Philippians 3:8-14 - In speaking of his past experiences as a person who has come to faith in Jesus, St. Paul tells the Philippians that he has “been taken possession of by Christ Jesus.” Who are some people in our faith community that exhibit a similar depth of faith?

Gospel Reading – John 8:1-11 - The religious leaders of Jerusalem tried to trap Jesus with a specific teaching on condemning adultery under the Mosaic Law. But Jesus countered with a stunning example of God’s mercy. When have you shown mercy toward another over judgment?

caTHOlIc QuOTES - “The end for which we are created invites us to walk a road that is surely sown with a lot of thorns, but it is not sad; through even the sorrow, it is illuminated by joy.” - Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati
