Dear Friends of St. John the Baptist,
I would like to take the opportunity to ask you to think about Holy
Week, and to take some time to mark your calendars in order to
participate more fully in the Holy Week services and liturgies of the
sacred Triduum. I do this because I believe the more we are able to
fully connect to these ancient liturgies in remembrance of the death
and resurrection of our Lord, the more we will be able to come to
Easter with hearts, minds, and bodies renewed. Please take some
time in the coming days to consider how you and your family might
make the time and sacrifice to join us at St. John the Baptist, and to
make this, our first Holy Week as a parish community, one that will
be both meaningful and memorable.
Palm Sunday of the Passion of Our Lord
Saturday, March 19th at 5pm
Sunday, March 20th at 10am
Celebrates the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem and includes the
distribution of Palm Branches and the reading of the Passion from
the Gospel according to Luke.
Holy Thursday of the Lord’s Supper
Thursday, March 24th at 7pm
Celebrates the Mass of the Lord’s Supper when Jesus gathered his
disciples around a table and gave them his body and blood, and said,
“Do this in memory of me.” It also recalls the washing of the disciples
feet by Jesus and the adoration of the blessed sacrament following
the Mass until midnight.
Good Friday of the Passion of Our Lord
Friday, March 25th at 7pm
This service includes the reading of the Lord’s Passion from the
Gospel according to John, prayers for the needs of the Church and
the world, the veneration of the cross (when people approach the
cross by touching or placing a kiss on it), and the reception
of Holy Communion.
The Easter Vigil of the Resurrection of the Lord
Saturday, March 26th at 8pm (THERE WILL BE NO 5PM MASS)
This Mass includes the celebration of baptism, confirmation, reception
of first Eucharist, and the blessing of marriages for parish family
members who have been preparing to receive the sacraments. The
liturgy includes the blessing of the Easter fire, the blessing of holy
water, the lighting of the paschal candle, and the proclamation of
some of the great scripture readings that recall the history
of salvation.
Easter Sunday of Our Lord’s Resurrection
Sunday, March 27th at 10am (ONLY ONE EASTER MASS)
Concludes the Easter Triduum with the blessing of the faithful with
holy water, and the singing of the Gloria and Alleluia once more.
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. David
