RECTOR WRITES
Dear Parishioners,
Rev. Eugene Griffin
The new curate, after his ordination to the Priesthood in
Christ Church Cathedral on Sunday 28th September, will
begin work in the Parish. Rev. Eugene will celebrate his
first Communion in the Parish on Sunday 5th October, in
St. Mary’s at 10.00 a.m. and in St. Brigid’s at 11.30 a.m.
He will also preach his first sermon at these services.
We look forward to the ministry of Rev. Eugene in our
Parish.
Harvest Sunday
This will be on Sunday 12th October, the preacher this
year is Canon Charles Mullan. Charles may be known
by some in the Parish, as he trained as a lay-reader in
Castleknock and Clonsilla. Since 2000 he has been
Dean’s Vicar in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Charles will
preach at 10.00 a.m. in St. Mary’s, Clonsilla and at 11.30
a.m. in St. Brigid’s, Castleknock.

We had our first in a series of Youth Services on Sunday 7th September. The speakers at the
service were Bernard and Maria Neary. They gave a talk on Madagascar from which they
have recently returned. The Parish have supported the work of an Anglican Orphanage on
the island. The music group lead the singing; we were pleased to see 40 young people
coming to the service. The next service will be on Sunday 7th November at 7.00 p.m. in

Sunday School Teacher Training
We were pleased that 10 of our Sunday Club teachers attended this training evening. The
training was ably lead by Lydia Monds from the Sunday School Society.
Lydia took up the theme of Thankfulness. Creative ideas were given in how to
communicate with children and the resources that are available. A number of other teachers
from the diocese also attended. We are pleased to say that Jenny O’Connor is to succeed
Beryl Stone as Sunday
school co-ordinator at the
end of November. We
thank Beryl for all her work
with the children over many
years. Beryl not only
taught but also wrote the
Sunday School lessons for
the teachers.
Yours sincerely,
Rev. Paul

PARISH ORGANISATIONS
Mothers’ Union:
Castleknock and Clonsilla Mothers’ Union Branch returned after the summer break with a
‘Great M.U. Bake Off’!!
An array of baked delights were spread in front of us – savoury and sweet, light and rich
and we sampled with immense relish! Lots of chat and a cuppa too!
Also at this meeting we were able to present 3 certificates of 45 years membership to
Marie Bannister, Chatty Eager and Pat Gray. Well done Ladies!
The Diocesan Festival Service was held in Christchurch Cathedral on Tuesday 9th
September; Archbishop Michael Jackson officiated and the Reverend David Mungavin,
Diocesan Chaplain, gave the sermon and his words were most prescient to the times we
live in and the challenges that face 21st century family life. Rachel Devlin proudly
carried our branch banner.
We will have our cards on sale after 11.30 a.m. service in St.Brigids, Castleknock on
Sunday 28th September. These cards are most attractive and offer exceptional value and
when you buy them you are supporting the amazing work that Mothers’ Union is involved
in worldwide.
Our next meeting is on Monday 6th October at 8.00 p.m. in the Parish Centre. It is to be a
‘PINK’ meeting as October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Please wear something
PINK!! The speaker is Margaret Mulcahy, founding member of the Plurabelle Paddlers
who are a group of ladies who do Dragon Boat racing as exercise in part recovery from
surgery. I’m sure this will be a most interesting and lively meeting and we invite anyone
from the Parish to come along and join us. Also at this meeting we will be collecting
clothes for the Women’s Refuge in Blanchardstown and for the Trust Shelter for men.

CYCLE FOR MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE
As reported in an earlier edition of the Parish News, a group of cyclists from Castleknock in
Dublin completed a gruelling 660km cycle from Mizen to Malin Head in aid of the Irish
Motor Neurone Disease Association back in May 2014.
The event has now raised in excess of €23,000 for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease
Association. The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association is dedicated to working on behalf
of people living with MND and their families and carers. Key services include home visiting
by a MND nurse, financial assistance towards home care help and the supply of specialised
equipment on loan.
The group would like
to extend their thanks
to all those who helped
them along the way
and the wider public
for their support
throughout their
journey.
If you’d like to support
the group’s efforts and
donate to the Irish
Motor Neurone
Disease Association,
please contact any
member of the group.

FAMILY LIFE ON THE DUMPS OF MADAGASCAR
Although in many regards a tropical paradise, Madagascar, with its unique flora and fauna,
is also home to 22 million people, 92% of them living on $2 a day or less according to the
World Bank. In a country of hard working people deprived of job opportunities, many
families, including children, turn to the city dumps in search of anything sellable that will
allow them make a meagre living thus warding off poverty and hunger and in the process
cleaning up their environment.
Madame Josephine and her quiet clutch of six children wait patiently for the trucks to deliver
the leftover cardboard that will guarantee her and her family an income for the next day or
two. She is a widow and a grandmother of one. Josephine told us her girls were with her
today because of school holidays (they are scared to stay at home without her); however, we
met the four youngest regularly on the dump, even during school term time. They were well
wrapped up, their layers of clothes keeping them warm and protected from the chill of an
apparent cold morning air that we were unaware of. As this widow watches intensely for the
eagerly awaited refuse trucks, she throws a sharp eye on her surroundings, always on the
lookout for any means of an income. Meanwhile the older girls took turns acting as
surrogate mums for their younger siblings.
Her day begins before sunrise; Josephine lives nearby and walks the short distance to her
place of work, across the busy bridge over the Ikopa River which offers both shade and
employment to the many women who spend their days washing clothes on its rich brown
muddy banks. Josephine, however, is a recycler; the cardboard she collects is sold in the
village next to her own; earning her Ariary 5,000 to 6,000 (€1.66 to €2) for her day’s work.
This income is usually spread over two or sometimes three days, the time it takes her to sell
her product. There will always be lean days, days when the trucks don’t come or their load
just doesn’t offer up anything of value. To compensate for this, Josephine moves to the
other side of the Ikopa, a mecca for mud-brick makers, which offers her an alternative
(though seasonal) means of income, carrying freshly baked mud bricks to a nearby collection
point for as little as AR 3 to AR 5 per brick - thirty bricks will cover the cost of a school
meal for one of her children. She also works at rice harvesting, again a seasonal occupation,
at which she earns AR 2,000 to AR 3,000 per day.
Our blue Toyota drew the attention of the older girls, bringing them out of their shell as they
asked to have their photograph taken beside its shiny metal and we duly obliged. Lalona
strutted and posed for the camera, her clear smile and carefree confident pose lit up and
radiated the dusty surroundings. Acting out her role as substitute mum she organised the
younger ones to pose for the camera, which brought about both bewilderment and
amusement. Although more reserved, Voahirana wanted her photograph taken too, and her
yellow hair slide, like a twinkling star in a dark Malagasy sky, shimmered from the front of
her black tightly curled hair. Meanwhile her baby sister sat snugly around her waist, the thin
shawl holding her in place offered warmth and comfort while her knitted balaclava kept her
tiny head warm. She peeped out at us from her secure nest, curious yet unaware of what all
the fuss was about.
Parish News Page 13 October 2014
We met this little family again later on in the day armed with a bag full of chewing gum and
sweets both congealed tightly in a pink peppermint sticky lump, the rejects from a local
factory offering sweet satisfaction to the sisters in the hungry world of Le Digue. This
delivery truck had arrived earlier, the crimson red wrapping paper easily identified by the
recyclers on board the truck was tossed down to the waiting children, like soft rain
welcomed on new mown grass the contents were greeted with delight. If their bread winner
was as successful that day, we just don’t know.
