THE VERY BEST OF NEIGHBOURS …..”that’s when good neighbours become good friends”. I think this is a line of a song which is a theme for a popular TV soap. But I am not writing about a ‘soap’ but real life and, like many others, was just getting on with everyday life with all its challenges and ups and downs – that was until tragedy struck. I lost my beloved husband. We just ‘got on’ with life and our very happy marriage of 21 years. Then, as with so many, cancer invaded his body and I watched while he suffered so much for a year, until his death. It was not until my life took this devastating direction that I actually found out what truly wonderful, caring neighbours we had, all living very close to me. Although we knew them all and ‘passed the time of day’ over many years, it was not until found myself alone and heartbroken that I found the care and love they wanted to give to me. Gradually I found I had someone to lean on, seek help or just have a good cry. So, thank you to the best neighbours anyone could wish for – the wonderful, kind, folk of Bishopstone. Their care, concern and love is helping me to go forward and carry on. Look around, I’ve found the best and maybe, just maybe, they live next door to you too. Janet Cope NB As if to illustrate the above, these same lovely people have come to the ‘aid’ of several others very close by who have also suffered traumatic adversities in recent months.

May Gardening
Writing these words of wisdom during Easter weekend with not a single green shoot of Spring to be seen and the weather forecasters promising more cold unseasonable weather to come during April let us hope, that not for the first time they are wrong. As my Dad used to say we always have a Spring time and Harvest, but it may be a little late this year. As the month progresses either sow runner bean seeds directly in the soil, or towards the month end plant out pot grown beans. Harden off any tender plants which have been grown inside prior to planting in the garden. Sow squash, pumpkins, courgettes and sweetcorn outdoors and a second sowing of carrots, although the first sowing may not yet have come up, and peas and broad beans. Plant out Brussels sprouts, summer cabbage and cauliflower seedlings; make sure to water them in and leave them to get established. Sow seeds of maincrop beetroot which is a very hardy vegetable which can be left in the soil right into the New Year and is still usable. Do still be prepared for a late frost as they sometimes occur right at the end of May. Thin out shoots of raspberries, leaving six or seven canes to each plant and do keep a watch for “American mildew” on gooseberry bushes, I find it can be treated and eradicated by treating with fungal sprays. I know not everyone likes to use sprays, but it does seem to be either-or situation, gooseberries or no gooseberries. PS
Can you spare some time to keep Dinton Churchyard Tidy? The next working party will be on May 11, then June 8, July 13, August 10, September 14 October 12. The work involved consists of light gardening tasks, mowing, weeding, strimming and general tidying up; you do as much as you want to. As an added incentive, refreshments are provided. If you would like to help, but Saturday morning is inconvenient, please contact Andrew or Helen and we can let you know what areas need to be worked on. Certain parts of the Churchyard are left as wildlife habitats and need a different work regime. Please could we ask that those tending graves only put compostable plant material in the compost bins and take plastic, cellophane, wire, plant pots etc. home with you. The churchyard is maintained by volunteers and we have no way of getting rid of plastic etc. Please contact Andrew or Helen Wild on 01296 748679

JEAN MARGARET MERRY 22
nd March 1933 – 31
st March 2013
Jean and Ron came to live in Stone in 1995 but shortly after their move Ron sadly died and Jean was left alone in a neighbourhood where she knew no-one. However, before long she found her way to the Fourth Tuesday Fellowship and here and in the Chapel she found her spiritual home. Soon the members discovered what a treasure had arrived! She became highly valued for her practical skills of tea brewing, cake making and organising, but perhaps most for her eager participation in worship. Nor were the Chapel and Fellowship the only beneficiaries: whatever activity in the village needed volunteers, there was Jean first in with offers. Church cake sales, stalls at Dinton Fete, coffee mornings or lunches for good causes, Jean’s helping hand would be there and her merry laugh would be heard. At the Knit and Natter group she would be working on blankets for children in need. But Jean will be remembered most especially for her gifts of loving kindness, understanding and friendship: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ was the faith she lived by. For all her friends, the wind will now always be a little sharper and the sunshine a little less bright without ‘our Jean’.

The following was written for the birthday tea party planned
to celebrate Jean’s 80th birthday.
You say you’re eighty?? We don’t believe it! Full four score years? We can’t conceive it!
Merry by nature as well as by name You’re always on top of the game.
Someone wants help? You’ll surely be there.
Need volunteers? Your hand’s in the air. Gallon of soup? “No problem”, you say.
Choc cake to die for? No-one makes them your way.
What you don’t know of showbiz ain’t worth a dime; “Ask Jean”, we say, time after time.
You reminisce about War-time and after Hard work, but always plenty of laughter.
You always make light of illness and pain –
“Old age creeping on” you laugh and explain. Of hospital stories you have quite a hoard -
We chuckle remembering the tale of ‘The Eye Ward!’
Your memories of dear Ron and a wonderful marriage - A pair like the proverbial ‘horse and carriage’.
Your girls and their families mean so much to you: And your faith underpins all the good that you do.
Of heartache and sorrow you’ve had your share,
So you understand others, and show that you care. A shoulder to cry on? A listening ear?
Thank you for being a friend without peer.

Methodist Church in Stone to Close?
The number of committed members at the Methodist Chapel in Stone is very low (around 6 regular worshippers on a Sunday morning).
There is no one to look after the maintenance of the building.
Financial resources are running down.
Extremely reluctantly the Church Council is facing the prospect of closing the building if circumstances do not radically alter by the end of the Church year, 31 August.
But if the Church does close, look at how much would be adversely affected in our community’s life in addition to losing the opportunity for worship. These groups currently use the chapel-

Family Support Liaison for meetings WEA Courses The people of the church have always been very outward looking in their support of other causes: Christian Aid, WaterAid, Whitechapel Mission, Bible Society, Mission Aviation Fellowship, Leprosy Mission, in addition to helping where possible with village events.
Now they feel in need of the village’s help.
Without the response of the village the chapel will close.
So where might you be able to help?
Making the chapel your spiritual home and regular place of worship

Dear Friends, The sea port town of Joppa, in Israel along the Mediterranean coast, had a very close knit community; so much so that when Tabitha (who was well-known for always doing good and helping the poor) suddenly died, everyone in the town was upset. News reached them that in the nearby town of Lydda, the Apostle Peter had carried out a dramatic healing, so he was sent for. On arriving at Tabitha’s house, he found many widows in tears as they showed him all the robes and clothing that Tabitha had made for them all. Peter went upstairs to Tabitha’s room, knelt down and prayed, and she was instantly brought back to life again. News spread rapidly, and many people came to faith in God in Joppa and the surrounding district. (See Acts chapter 9) During the last month, the Annual Parish Meetings have taken place for Dinton – with Ford and Upton, and for Stone – with Bishopstone and Hartwell. Once again we’ve been reminded of the tremendous amount of voluntary work that goes on throughout the year in our local communities. As I said last month, we are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful and vibrant area. However, we cannot take what we have for granted. Every year Avril Clark and I take a number of funerals for people who have lived and worked here for most of their lives. In their own way they have been ‘Tabitha’s’! They are all greatly missed. This sequence of events is to be expected, and is okay if other ‘Tabitha’s’ come along and fill up some of the gaps that are left. It seems to me, however, that there is a growing reluctance for people to take on voluntary responsibilities in our communities. It’s easy to say “leave it to the actively retired”, but many of our actively retired are becoming less active! Age does that to you! We urgently need some of our younger residents to get more involved, and if you want to know how, I’ve listed below just a few of the current needs:-
1) Help to ‘run’ the magnificent new facility at Stone – the Stone Pavilion – caretaker, cleaner, bookings secretary etc., and maybe help start a weekly ‘After School Club’ in that building.
2) Join the maintenance teams for Dinton & Stone churchyards. 3) Support the Methodist Chapel in Eythrope Road, where there is a
possibility of closure after 100 years. Help save this from happening as it would be a great loss to the community in so many ways.
(See article in this magazine). 4) Become a Foundation Governor for Stone School.
Parish News 17 May 2013
5) Help at our Community Fêtes, Bank Holiday Monday 27th May, at Stone
Recreation Ground, as our new Pavilion is opened, and on August Bank Holiday Monday (26
th) at Dinton
And so I could go on …… Don’t leave it to someone else. See what YOU can do, and in giving you will receive so much more back in blessing.
Yours in His Service,
PETER RICH (Rev) Priest in Charge

Farewell to Dennis (Sam) Olliffe.
Dennis Olliffe was born in Bishopstone on the 28th November 1923, the
eldest son of Sidney and Dorothy Olliffe (nee Wixon). Dennis was their second child but their family would eventually expand to 9 children, 6 girls and 3 boys. Dennis was known throughout his life as ‘Sam’, a name given to him at an early age by his grandmother. Sam attended Stone village school which was a very long walk from Bishopstone for the young children. This was the only school he attended. In November 1937 the family moved to Stone (Bittenham Close).
On reaching the age of 18 he joined the army in the Cheshire regiment and served in Palestine and Egypt in World War II.
Dennis married in 1945 and had 3 sons and 2 daughters. On leaving the army he had several jobs during his working life, at International Alloys, Friths the builders and his last job before retirement was as an assistant school caretaker at Sir Henry Floyd Grammar school but throughout his working life he was never unemployed.
His main hobby was gardening and he gained most of his knowledge from his father and he passed on this knowledge and his allotment to his grandson
Matthew. After his retirement and now living at Hartwell End in Aylesbury he would walk with his dog to tend his allotment in Bishopstone on most days of the week. This daily walk kept him very fit and healthy. As well growing vegetables for the family household he also reared a few chickens, ducks and pigs.
Sam was a very placid, polite, hard working and contented man who enjoyed the outdoor country life but as old age approached, sadly he had to go into the Chestnuts Care Home in Southcourt where he was very well looked after for over 2 years. After a short illness at the age of 89 he died in Stoke Mandeville hospital on the 24
th March 2013. Dennis
returned to Stone where he was buried in the cemetery after his funeral service which was conducted by the Rev. Peter Rich, vicar of Stone and Dinton, on 2
nd April 2013.
Sam was known to many and loved by everyone, a gentleman who will be sadly missed by us all.
Gordon Weedon.

WILLIAM MORRIS With Andy Gunn
This illustrated talk on the nineteenth century artist, craftsman, designer and poet William Morris, founder of the Arts and Crafts Movement, will cover his early life as a painter, the interior design firm which revolutionised the art of house decoration in England (we still have Morris designs on our walls and furniture) and the houses he furnished for himself and his family. One of the finest of his homes was at Kelmscott in Oxfordshire, and the History Group has arranged a visit to this Tudor manor house, full of Morris furniture, textiles and art works, together with the gardens, church and village. This will take place on August 21st, with Andy as our guide.

Local News Columns Every week I write two village news columns for the Bucks Herald: Dinton and Stone & Bishopstone. The columns include news about things that have happened in both Parishes, including charity and fund-raising events, school news, church services, and other items which I hope are of interest to my readers. I like to include more personal items such as milestone Birthdays or Wedding Anniversaries as well as celebrations of people's achievements etc. but I cannot do this if I do not know about them!
I am very grateful to those people who regularly contribute items for my columns but would appreciate receiving information from those I have not written about before. I can also accept photographs if they are sent to me electronically which the Bucks Herald will use is they are of good quality and there is enough space.
My deadline has recently changed and most weeks it is now noon on Thursday for the following week's paper, it is best to send me copy as soon as you can. Sometimes I need to ask contributors for more details so please give me plenty of notice! If there are Bank Holidays then deadlines will vary. The best way of passing news on to me is by email at [email protected] or by telephoning 01296 748221. My address is Starveall Farm House, Oxford Road, Stone, Aylesbury, Bucks. HP17 8PZ.

Aeneas and Dorcas ‘Please come at once!’
In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor. About that time she became ill and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room.
Lydda was near
Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, ‘Please come at once!’
Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood round him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.
Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning towards the dead woman, he said, ‘Tabitha, get up.’ She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called for the believers, especially the widows, and presented her to them alive.
This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the
Lord. Peter stayed in Joppa for some time with a tanner named Simon.
