From the Pastor’s Desk… Dear People of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, On February 10th, we began the solemn season of Lent with Ash Wednesday. It is a time of preparation for the joyous celebration of Easter and the Easter season. During Lent, we embrace the practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It is a time of doing less (acts of self-denial) and doing more (prayer and acts of charity). The forty days of Lent are followed by fifty days of celebrating the Easter season. Please remember that during Lent we are praying the Stations of the Cross in church every Friday night at 7:30pm. Immediately following, I will hear confessions. Receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation is a wonderful way to prepare oneself for the glory of Easter. We will have a joint penance service with St. Andrew on Wednesday, March 16th, at 7:30pm at Seton. During Lent, we remember in a special way all RCIA candidates. They have made important life decisions, and are making a great act of faith as they journey to full membership in the Catholic Church. We pray for them in a special way as they get closer to the Easter Vigil, when they will be able to join us at the altar of God. I invite you to attend our St. Andrew/St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Lenten Parish Mission, given by Fr. Tony Stephens, beginning with the weekend Masses on March 12th and 13th, followed by mission talks Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday beginning at 7:00pm. Please check the bulletin and website for more information. If you have never been to an Easter Vigil Mass, consider coming this year. It is the most beautiful and meaningful Catholic liturgy there is. This year, the Easter Vigil begins at 8:45pm, on Saturday, March 26th. It will last about two hours. We look forward to springtime and Easter time. We look forward to celebrating our Lord’s Resurrection, so beautifully symbolized by the new birth of spring. Enjoy the fifty days of Easter. Please remember that our SASEAS School is holding a fundraiser on Saturday, March 12th. Please watch for details in the bulletin and support our wonderful and important school if you can. And finally, I have a note to remind me that the month of March is dedicated to St. Joseph – whose feast day is March 19th. He is the patron of the Universal Church, and patron of fathers, workers and carpenters. St. Joseph – pray for us.

God bless you, Fr. Michael L. Cordier

The Name of God is Mercy Pope Francis was interviewed by writer Andrea Torniella and the conversation was made into a book called “The Name of God is Mercy.” It draws on the memories of Pope Francis from his youth and priesthood. This is a book in which the Pope opens his heart, taking us by the arm to enter into the great mercy of God. It is meant to help people understand the message of mercy and forgiveness that is at the heart of the Christian message. It is a book to help people understand that it is possible to restart one’s life only if we are able to humble ourselves and recognize the need to be forgiven. Pope Francis describes humanity at one point as wounded, deeply wounded, and in need of a Church that does not wait for the wounded to knock on her doors, but looks for them on the streets to make them feel loved. The Church, he says, is like a field hospital, where treatment is given for those who are sick, those who are sinners. He refers to Pope Pius XII who in 1955 said that the tragedy of our age was that it had lost a sense of sin. Many people don’t know where to turn when they are wounded, many are lost. Many turn to psychics and fortune-tellers. Many indulge in drugs, alcohol, food or sex to relieve the pain. They don’t know that the love of God exists even for those who are not disposed to receiving it. As a priest, as one who hears confessions, he tries to find a crack, just a tiny opening, so that he can pry open that door and grant forgiveness and mercy. Just going to confession shows an initiation of repentance, even if it is not conscious. Anyone who confesses does well to feel shame for his sins: shame is a grace we ask for; it is good and positive, because it makes us humble. He stresses that the confessional should not be analogous to a ‘dry cleaner.’ To view sin as just a stain that needs cleaning away is hypocrisy. Sin is more than a stain. Sin is a wound; it needs to be treated, healed. He said that priests should not treat the confessional like a torture chamber. When asked, “Who is Pope Francis? He replied that, ‘I am a sinner.’” He says that the Church condemns sin because it has to relay the truth, but at the same time embraces the sinner, who recognizes himself as such. No human sin, however serious, can prevail over or limit mercy. The Church does not exist to condemn people, but to bring about an encounter with the visceral love of God’s mercy, and help people perceive that there are no situations that they cannot get out of. The book closes with a chapter on the need for mercy and compassion, to conquer global indifference, for every believer to open his heart to the mercy of God, to be merciful to others and to act on the seven corporal works of mercy. As St. John of the Cross said, “In the evening of life, we will be judged on love alone.” Love God first and love our neighbor – please go to Confession and Sunday Mass.

All the PRP Sunday students and Home School families are participating in the CRS Rice Bowl project during the season of Lent. The kick-off this year was Sunday, February 7th, at the Family Lenten Day. This Catholic Relief Services (CRS)

program helps the children learn about Catholic Social Teaching and have the opportunity to reach out and help the communities served by CRS. Through prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we engage in the work of Lent. CRS Rice Bowl asks us to:

Pray to deepen our relationship with God and reflect on what type of person He calls us to be. Fast to remove the things that get between God and us and to live in solidarity with those in need. Give alms to our brothers and sisters in need, honoring Jesus’ call to serve our neighbors.

Any parish family or individual wishing to join our effort through participation in CRS RICE BOWL is encouraged to pick up a packet in the narthex and return their donations through the Sunday collection basket. Please consider engaging in this USCCB sponsored Lenten practice. When you give to CRS Rice Bowl, 75% of your donations support CRS humanitarian relief programs in nearly 100 countries worldwide, and 25% go to hunger and poverty alleviation efforts in the Cincinnati area. More information can be found at http://www.crsricebowl.org/about/ Margaret Bergh

St. Andrew-St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School Academically Excellent – Passionately Catholic

As students continue to learn about the Year of Mercy, along with our Corporal and Spiritual works of Mercy, students collected and packaged enough food to make over 200 power packs and filled 20 boxes of food to help the children at Oyler School in Lower Price Hill.

Students thanked parishioners for their support, generosity and prayers during the Sunday Masses of Catholic Schools Week. Each parishioner left with a special bookmark dedicated to the Year of Mercy, all designed by each one of our students.

Students from both campuses, joined with parents, faculty and staff, celebrated the end of Catholic Schools Week with Mass. The Mass was a beautiful culmination of the week for our entire school community.

To prepare for our Open House, the St. Andrew Campus decorated the classrooms and hallways centered on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, while the Seton Campus focused on One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

Now that our celebration of National Catholic Schools Week is over, the principal, staff and students wish to thank the families, parishioners and friends who helped make our week special. We appreciate the time you spent learning about the community of faith, knowledge and service that SASEAS School provides for our students and parish.

Throughout the week students had fun with special events including, pajama day, students vs. teachers volleyball games, bible bee, Spirit Day, a no homework day and our first ever, all school lunch and Bingo!

Seton Bingo Update Seton Bingo is looking for a couple of new volunteers to help with staffing the Bingo once every four weeks on a Wednesday for about 3 ½ hours. The job is very easy, you call back Bingo winner cards to the caller, help in the kitchen during the two 15 minute intermissions. Volunteers are normally on their way home before 10:00pm. A question asked many times is, “Why should I help with Bingo, it doesn’t help me?” Answer: Bingo is a very important income activity for the parish. Each month the proceeds from Bingo are turned over to the parish general fund to help with meeting the budget. To volunteer or want additional information, please contact Bob Brookens (Bingo Chairman) at 513-575-9136 or email [email protected], or the parish office at 513-575-0119.

Winter and Security We begin the New Year and the third quarter for the church fiscal year. Looking at the church financials for the first six months, we are in line with our budget and having a very good year. Thank you for your generosity! The winter is half over and to date, it has been only moderately cold with only a couple snowy days. That is great news for the snow removal and salt budget, as well as the heating bills. Hope the mild winter continues! New this spring will be security cameras for the parking lot areas of the church and school. Seton has been very fortunate not to have any break-ins to the buildings and very few other issues on the grounds. The cameras will allow Seton to assist the police in any investigation and see any strange activity on the grounds. We also hope that you will feel safer with the added security.

First Reconciliation Celebrated

First Reconciliation was celebrated on Tuesday, January 26th, with forty-two Seton second graders. We thank the parents and teachers for their support. The First Reconciliation Retreat was held on Saturday, January 23rd. That morning our second graders experienced many great activities and learning opportunities. By visiting stations that reinforced learning that took place in the classroom, all were ready, EXCITED and prepared to celebrate the sacrament well. The children are now engaged in learning more about the Eucharist. A Parent Meeting for

First Eucharist is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13th, at 7:00pm in the church. They will experience their morning retreat on First Communion on Saturday, April 23rd, and receive their First Holy Communion at Mass on April 30th, May 1st and 7th. This is an exciting time for our second grade children and their families! Please keep them in your prayers. First Reconciliation†First Communion Committee (FR†FCC) plans for these events. If you would like to help, contact: Margaret Bergh, Jill Reineck, Joy Zielinski or Jen Walker for more information. Margaret Bergh

SETON PRESCHOOL GETS READY TO “MARCH INTO SPRING” Start looking for early signs of spring in the preschool classrooms as the children get ready for warmer and sunnier days by making art projects such as kites, windsocks, caterpillars, butterflies and, of course, green shamrocks to hang up in the classroom. However, past experience warns us not to be too hasty in putting away our hats and mittens…snow may still be in the forecast. It was great to see so many preschool parents at our Catholic Schools Open House held in January. A special thanks goes to all of you who shared your good thoughts about our school to your friends and neighbors. Your support means a great deal to the teachers and me as we strive to make this the very best preschool possible. We have a few openings for preschool that are available, if you know anyone interested, please have them give me a call at 575-9900. The preschoolers had a chance to exchange valentines with their classmates at our Valentine’s Day parties in February. Thank you to all the parents who helped with the party games, food, and supervision. We had many happy faces covered in pink and red icing!!! The children will be spending the next few months learning about the changes that the spring weather brings to God’s creations. We will study flowers and butterflies and what is needed for them to continue to grow strong and healthy. Easter break and Easter are just around the corner, and the children are anxious to be outside more often and to observe the welcoming signs of spring. God’s earth seems to reawaken during the months of March and April with blossoming tulips and warm gentle breezes (we hope!). We wish all of you a sunny, warm spring; a relaxing spring break; and a blessed, happy Easter and, of course, a Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!

PRP Families Enter into the Season of Lent Sunday, February 7th, the PRP community gathered in the cafeteria to reflect on the season of Lent. A blend of prayer, sharing, fellowship, and learning helped us engage, focus on the beauty of the season and fostered ideas of how to proceed. The morning began with praying the Stations of the Cross led by Deacon Steve Brown. The students had created images of the fourteen Stations and they were used to focus our prayer. It was a very solemn and prayerful experience. The group then reflected on the disciplines of Lent and Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl Program was presented. This annual Lenten activity helps us through its focus on prayer, fasting and almsgiving to deepen our commitment to growing our faith and serving others as Jesus asks. The PRP families will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Wednesday, March 16th, at the Parish Reconciliation Service, which will be offered at 7:30pm within the context of the closing night of the parish mission being held at Seton this year. This opportunity in Lent adds to our meaningful celebration of the season. The parish is fortunate to have a dedicated group of catechists who share their faith and the teachings of the Church with our young people. Do you have a child to enroll or want to volunteer? Please contact Margaret Bergh (646-2348). New participants are always welcome! Margaret Bergh PRP Lenten Family Day
