LENTEN REFLECTION

To understand what occurred on Palm Sunday and to know what it meant not only for that time but for all times, one particular detail is important, which became for Jesus’ disciples the key to understand that event when, after Easter, they recalled those tumultuous days with a new look. Jesus entered the Holy City riding on a donkey, that is, the animal of simple country people and, moreover, a donkey that did not belong to him, that he had been loaned for his occa-sion. He did not arrive in a luxurious royal carriage, or on horseback as the world’s great, but on a borrowed donkey. John tells us initially that the disciples did not understand this. Only after Passover did they realize that in this way Jesus was fulfilling the prophets’ proc-lamations; he showed that his action derived from the Word of God and led to its fulfillment. They remembered, says John, that one reads in the prophet Zechariah: “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold your king is coming, sitting on an ass’s colt.” (John 12;15; cf Zechariah 9:9)

Pro-Life Activities

Let us pray in thanksgiving

that we have been given the

secret to eternal life, which

is to die to ourselves in love

for others, as Christ did for us.

Observing Good Friday vs. Opening

Day

So, why can't you go to the base-

ball opener on Friday? This year, several major league baseball teams will hold "opening day" celebrations on Good Friday with games starting at

3:05 p.m. While everyone else is heading to the stands, eager for hot dogs and home runs, all those Catho-lics are walking quietly towards

churches. Why?? Because at three o'clock on a Friday, on a hillside called Calvary, the Savior of the world took his last breath. All for the love of us.

"It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon because of an eclipse of the sun. Then the veil of the tem-

ple was torn down the middle. Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit"; and when he had said this he breathed his

last." (Luke 23:44-46) At 3p.m. on Good Friday, we take the time to re-flect on what Christ has done for us, not only by fasting, but also by the

various devotions that our churches offer: veneration of the cross, the reading of the Passion and the Sta-

tions of the Cross. On Good Friday, we spend our afternoon walking with Christ to Calvary, immersed in his love and mercy… and that beats any base-

ball game, any time. {Taken from usccb.org / Six Ways to Evangelize

During Lent}

Please join us on Good Friday, April 6, for the annual Diocesan Pro-Life Prayer Vigil at the abortion clinic at 8401 North Interstate Highway 35 ( just north of Hwy 183 at Fenelon Street) to pray for an end to abortion. Come for any length of time from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. We will be praying the Stations of the Cross, the Rosary, The Divine Mercy Chaplet, and other prayers throughout the day. What better way to be at the foot of the cross with Our Lord?

Tickets are available for the 2012 Pro-Life Benefit Gala of the Diocese of Austin. The Benefit Gala will take place on April 14 at the Renaissance Austin Hotel and will feature the Most Rev. Bishop Joe Vásquez, Bishop of Austin, and George Weigel, renowned theologian and author of the best-selling book, “Witness to Hope, the Biography of Pope John Paul II”. Dinner and a beautiful silent auction are included. Your purchase or sponsorship will help to build a culture of life and a civilization of love in central Texas. For more information and to purchase your tickets, visit www.centraltexasprolife.org or call (512) 949-2486.

If you or someone you know has experienced an abortion, we can help. Please contact Project Rachel at (877) W E C A R E 2 o r [email protected]. Our

next retreat is scheduled for July 27-29.
