* Traditional greeting by a Bishop

1. Lord, as the day begins 3. Grant us the Spirit’s strength, lift up our hearts in praise; teach us to walk his way; take from us all our sins, so bring us all at length guard us in all our ways: safe to the close of day: our every step direct and guide from hour to hour sustain and bless, that Christ in all be glorified! and let our song be thankfulness. 2. Christ be in our work and skill, 4. Now as the day begins serving each other’s need; make it the best of days; Christ be in thought and will, take from us all our sins, Christ be in word and deed: guard us in all our ways: our minds be set on things above our every step direct and guide in joy and peace, in faith and love. that Christ in all be glorified!

3

Prayers of Penitence President God so loved the world that he gave his only Son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins, to be our advocate in heaven, and to bring us to eternal life. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, firmly resolved to keep God’s commandments and to live in love and peace with all. All Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. President Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon us, pardon and deliver us from all our sins, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and keep us in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

All Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word

Readings

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews (4.12-16) The Writer speaks of Jesus the Great High Priest, and the Word of God.

Indeed, the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

For the word of the Lord All thanks be to God. Please stand.

Gospel Reading

All Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. A cantor sings. All Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. The Lord be with you All and also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. All Glory to you, O Lord.

(Mark 10.17-31) Jesus tells his followers how they can enter the Kingdom of heaven.

As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: “You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honour your father and mother.” ’

6

He said to him, ‘Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.’ Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, ‘You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’ When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, ‘How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!’ And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, ‘Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.’ They were greatly astounded and said to one another, ‘Then who can be saved?’ Jesus looked at them and said, ‘For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.’ Peter began to say to him, ‘Look, we have left everything and followed you. ’Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ. All Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Please sit.

Sermon Canon Tim Schofield

Anthem

Words: Timothy Dudley Smith. Music: T. Brian Coleman, arr. John Barnard

As water to the thirsty, as beauty to the eyes, as strength that follows weakness, as truth instead of lies, as song-time and spring-time and summer-time to be, (refrain) so is my Lord, my living Lord, so is my Lord to me. Like calm in place of clamour, like peace that follows pain,

like meeting after parting, like sunshine after rain, like moonlight, and starlight and sunlight on the sea, so is my Lord... As sleep that follows fever, as gold instead of grey, freedom after bondage, as sunrise to the day, as home to the traveller and all we long to see so is my Lord….

Please stand.

The Nicene Creed The president introduces the Creed. All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

8

Please sit or kneel.

Prayers of Intercession One of these response may be used: Lord, in your mercy or Lord, hear us. All hear our prayer. Lord, graciously hear us. And at the end: Merciful Father, All accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Peace President Christ is our peace. He has reconciled us to God in one body by the cross. We meet in his name and share his peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you All and also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. All may exchange a wave of peace with their neighbours, and those worshipping online.

Preparation of the Table

President Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour, and the majesty; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours. All All things come from you, and of your own do we give you.

1. O worship the King all glorious above; O gratefully sing his pow’r and his love: our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendour, and girded with praise. 2. O tell of his might, O sing of his grace, whose robe is the light, whose canopy space; his chariots of wrath the deep thunder-clouds form, and dark in his path on the wings of the storm. 3. This earth, with its store of wonders untold, almighty, thy pow’r hath founded of old: hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree, and round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea.

4. Thy bountiful care what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air, it shines in the light; it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, and sweetly distils in the dew and the rain. 5. Frail children of dust, and feeble and frail, in thee do we trust, nor find thee to fail; thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end! Our maker, defender, redeemer, and friend. 6. O measureless might, ineffable love, while angels delight to hymn thee above, thy humbler creation, though feeble their lays, with true adoration shall sing to thy praise.

10

The Eucharistic Prayer President The Lord be with you All and also with you. Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise. President Father, we give you thanks and praise through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word, through whom you have created all things; who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour. By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh; as your Son, born of the blessed Virgin, he lived on earth and went about among us; he opened wide his arms for us on the cross; he put an end to death by dying for us; and revealed the resurrection by rising to new life; so he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: All

11

President Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Great is the mystery of faith: All

President And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.

12

Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Faith, Saint Nicholas, and all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. All Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Please stand, sit, or kneel as your personal tradition suggests.

President Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us. All Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

Breaking of the Bread

President We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

13

For the benefit of those joining us online. All are invited to pray, in unity with

those at home, excluding (if in church) only the words in italics All In union, O dear Lord, with the faithful at every altar of your

Church, where your blessed body and blood are being offered to the Father, I desire to offer you praise and thanksgiving. I present to you my soul and body, with the earnest wish that I may ever be united to you.

(online) And since I cannot now receive you sacramentally...

All ...I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself to you, and embrace you with all the affections of my soul. O let nothing ever separate me from you. Let me live and die in your love. Amen

The Distribution President Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. All Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

preferred. Gluten free bread is available to any who request it. Simply ask for ‘gluten-free’ when offered ‘the Body of Christ’.

Hymn (625) Words: Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-1879)

Tune: Nottingham, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) adapt.

Hymn (538) Words: Samuel Trevor Francis (1834-1925)

Tune: Ebenezer (Ton-Y-Botel), From an anthem by Thomas Williams (1869-1944)

1. Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee; take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise. 2. Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love; take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for thee. 3. Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King; take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from thee.

4. Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold; take my intellect, and use ev’ry pow’r as thou shalt choose. 5. Take my will, and make it thine: it shall be no longer mine; take my heart: it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne. 6. Take my love; my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure-store; take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for thee.

1. O the deep, deep love of Jesus! Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free; rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me. Underneath me, all around me, is the current of thy love; leading onward, leading homeward, to my glorious rest above. 2. O the deep, deep love of Jesus! Spread his praise from shore to shore, how he loveth, ever loveth, changeth never, nevermore; how he watches o’er his loved ones, died to call them all his own; how for them he intercedeth, watcheth o’er them from the throne.

3. O the deep, deep love of Jesus! Love of ev’ry love the best; ‘tis an ocean vast of blessing, ‘tis a haven sweet of rest. O the deep, deep love of Jesus! ‘Tis a heav’n of heav’ns to me; and it lifts me up to glory, for its lifts me up to thee.
