PARAGON SECURITY
New Zealand’s Leading Security Company
The eyes and ears of Auckland’s Security Scene
Our research with Bars indicates that Managers just put up with door problems because:
∗ One of their doormen has been there for ages.
∗ It’s easier to stand still than test the market. You might get others who are just as bad.
∗ Uncertainty over delivery, timeliness or fees.
∗ The administration involved in changing providers.
Listening to our research we have decided to make this special offer to new clients:
∗ We will give you one weekend free service (No strings)
∗ We will retain, as our agent, any staff you do want to keep (so long as they are willing to meet our standards. Note: Two bars have already done this and we can give you details on request.)
∗ We will guarantee and sign a contract detailing set rates.
∗ You are dealing with an award winning boutique security company, part of NZ’s largest Private Investigation firm, licensed, insured and properly governed (total cover).
∗ We will deliver exceptional service at all times, licensed, insured and contracted.
∗ We have a roving supervisor “Vince Schuster” visiting every Bar and Club every shift, which is included in our fee, ensuring standards are met and total client satisfaction.
∗ We will liaise with Police and Local Authority on your behalf if you wish. Note: We have an excellent rapport with the authorities.
Plan Ahead for 2012
Our research
The theme of this edition is to
kick off 2012 in a way that helps
Bars and Clubs get the most
revenue from repeat business by
ensuring the door staff greet and
treat patrons well.
In preparing for this edition, we
canvassed over 30 bars, clubs
and patrons seeking their view
on how welcoming and safe the
establishments were in the minds
of the operator and the paying
customer. The results did not
really astound us but do serve as
a reminder of just how things
have changed, especially around
licensing:
The operators typically love their
Head Doorman and because of
that they will put up with sloppy
turnout and poor practices by the
other guards despite feeling the
door should be run better.
The customers said they all felt
safe but spent more time and
money and returned more often
to establishments where the
Crowd Controllers made them
feel welcome and did not try to
intimidate them with their size or
actions.
The new licensing requirements
where Crowd Controllers now need
to display on their person their
Crowd Controller badge was not at
all well understood. Even Crowd
Controllers we approach who were
not displaying their badge claimed
not to know they were breaking the
law. Hopefully, a crack down will
come soon, as to allow unlicensed
Crowd Controllers only serves to
defeat the good work of others.

On 27 December we provided 26 guards to look after the entire security for “Selective Sounds” event at Mangawhai.
Prior to the event we met with Police and we prepared the Event Security Plan.
Having trained professional licensed guards increased revenue by stopping “fence jumpers”.
The quality of service was such that other promoters who were present all sought our details, arguably the greatest reference a company can get. We look forward to next year. For references on our work call the organiser, Ben Sheppard 021 554 665.
A LOOK AT THE NEW LICENCE
As mentioned on the first page, from 1 November 2011 every Crowd Controller on duty, must at all times prominently display their badge. This is what the badge should look like, although a Crowd Controller only requires the “CC” category. The badge shown is Ron McQuilter who has every category. Note: The guards name, date of birth or company they work for is not given and badges are now issued for a term of 5 years.
TIE OR OPEN COLLAR
This subject of how a Crowd Controller should dress is well debated and often the subject of much hostility when a group of Crowd Controllers get together. Likewise, Bars and Clubs have varying views and of course the client always gets the last word and the look they particularly want.
However, it’s always easier to dress down than dress up and our experience is that a Crowd Controller in a smart shirt and tie gives off a better first impression than someone with an open neck, often un-pressed shirt, leading to hands in their pockets and texting their mates.
The answer is simple actually. Just think what first impression you would want to see when you arrive at a new Bar

VINNIE’S VINE The real juice
Hi again, It was a very busy Festive Season and the bars and clubs were jam packed with extra staff being brought in to support the existing teams. The Rugby World Cup was a great training run and every bar and club in the City had the opportunity to discover and sort out any flaws in their systems. My teams have also been able to learn from the massive crowds and find all the good and bad points in the way we run each of our doors. It’s fair to say that the stress levels were running high, but interestingly the amount of trouble was way down on what we would normally see in a weekend throughout the year. I suppose that’s down to the great atmosphere in which it was a privilege to be a part of. It’s a real buzz driving around the bars and clubs checking on the crowds and the Security teams. It a real spectator sport and I would be happy to take any client around for a night, just give me a call 021 0801355 or email me at [email protected] As I was writing my Vine column I got a call from David to give me his weekend guard roster for Cranks Bar in Albany over the Shore and, compliments of David, he said I should mention the good work we do at Cranks Thanks' David, it’s the great rapport with my clients that really keeps me going throughout the wee small hours when everyone around is partying up. The new car also helps Boss !!!
